Chargers WR Mike Williams on track to play in season opener

The Chargers are expected to have one of the key pieces of the offense in Week 1.

Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams is on schedule to return to the football field for the team’s season opener on Sept. 12 against the Washington Football Team, according to head coach Brandon Staley.

Williams spent the majority of Los Angeles’ training camp and preseason sidelined with a hip flexor injury.

Entering the final year of his contract, Williams is looking to have a big season in hopes of finally getting his production to match up with his talent.

In order for him to do so, he must stay on the field, as injuries the last two seasons have slowed him and prevented him from living up to his first-round billing.

This season, Williams is set to man the “X receiver” role in the new offense, which was formerly held by Saints’ Michael Thomas. That means plenty of targets could be coming his way, but he must remain healthy.

Chargers injury updates: Justin Jackson, Mike Williams, Rashawn Slater

Checking in on the health of the Chargers following the preseason opener.

Following the preseason opener against the Rams, the Chargers returned to the practice field on Monday to prepare for their joint practices and preseason matchup with the 49ers this week.

Los Angeles remained relatively healthy coming off this past weekend, but players were still banged up.

Running back Justin Jackson, who sustained a groin injury, did not participate and he is not expected to be available this week, either.

Wide receiver Mike Williams has been dealing with a hip flexor injury and is expected to miss the two joint practices.

Offensive tackle Rashawn Slater did not practice today due to some tightness in his lower back, but the plan is for him to be ready for later this week.

Long snapper Cole Mazza suffered a shoulder injury and was wearing a sling at practice Monday. As insurance, the Chargers signed veteran Matt Overton.

Cornerback Ryan Smith, who has missed nearly the entire summer with a core injury, might not be ready for the start of the regular season.

Chargers make roster moves ahead of Week 17 vs. Chiefs

The Los Angeles Chargers made roster moves prior to the season finale.

The Chargers made a few roster moves ahead of their Week 17 bout with the Chiefs.

Los Angeles placed cornerback Casey Hayward and linebacker Malik Jefferson on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

In correspondence, L.A. activated linebacker Cole Christiansen, defensive end Joe Gaziano, tight end Matt Sokol and safety Jaylen Watkins to the 53-man roster.

The Bolts will be without a handful of their starters this Sunday.

Chargers final injury report vs. Chiefs: Handful of starters out

The Chargers will be playing a lot of backups in the season finale.

The Los Angeles Chargers released their final injury report ahead of the Week 17 battle with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Here is a look at the report:

OUT

Joey Bosa

Rayshawn Jenkins

Bryan Bulaga

Casey Hayward

Malik Jefferson

QUESTIONABLE

Jahleel Addae

Sam Tevi

With Jenkins out and Addae questionable, rookie Alohi Gilman and Jaylen Watkins could get extended playing time.

With Bulaga out, Storm Norton will start at right tackle. If Tevi can’t play, Trey Pipkins will likely start.

With Hayward out, Tevaughn Campbell will start on the opposite of Michael Davis.

Chargers place WR Keenan Allen on COVID-19 list

The Chargers will be without their star receiver in the season finale.

Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen’s 2020 season has come to an end.

Allen was already dealing with a hamstring injury heading into the season finale against the Chiefs. But he was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, solidifying his unavailability.

It remains to be seen if Allen tested positive or if he came in close contact with someone who has it.

Allen, who was named to his fourth Pro Bowl, finishes the season with 92 receptions, 992 yards and eight touchdowns.

Chargers’ Keenan Allen, Joey Bosa among players likely to be out vs. Chiefs

The Chargers don’t have anything to play for.

The Chargers have nothing to play for in the season finale this weekend against the Chiefs, which means that it’s not worth letting key players go out and worsen an injury that they’re dealing with.

Therefore, Los Angeles is likely to be without wide receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring) and edge defender Joey Bosa (concussion) and safety Rayshawn Jenkins (ankle), according to coach Anthony Lynn.

If Allen doesn’t play, he will be eight receiving yards shy from the 1,000-yard mark. The 28-year old has surpassed that the past three seasons, all of which he was named to the Pro Bowl.

Meanwhile, Bosa, another Pro Bowler, will finish with 39 total tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 15 tackles for loss.

Other notable players that likely will be unavailable this weekend are tight end Hunter Henry (COVID-19 list) and offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga (foot).

Chargers place EDGE Uchenna Nwosu on injured reserve

Another defensive end was placed on the injured reserve.

The Chargers made a few roster moves ahead of their Week 16 matchup against the Broncos.

Los Angeles placed edge defender Uchenna Nwosu on the injured reserve list. In correspondence, the team signed EDGE Jesse Lemonier to the active roster.

Lemonier has appeared in four games for the Bolts this year after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Liberty.

Nwosu and Joey Bosa were both ruled out for Sunday. Nwosu is dealing with a knee injury while Bosa was diagnosed with a concussion.

L.A. also activated EDGE Joe Gaziano and tight end Matt Sokol from the practice squad.

This will mark the first time that Gaziano and Sokol have appeared in a regular season game.

The activation of Sokol means that the chances of TE Hunter Henry playing are slim. Henry was placed on the COVID-19 list a couple of days ago.

Chargers final injury report vs. Broncos: Joey Bosa, Uchenna Nwosu OUT

The Chargers are thin at the defensive end position.

The Los Angeles Chargers released their final injury report ahead of the Week 16 battle with the Denver Broncos.

Here is a look at the report:

L.A. will be without edge defenders Joey Bosa (concussion) and Uchenna Nwosu (knee), which means that Jerry Tillery and Isaac Rochell will start and Emeke Egbule should get extended snaps.

Linebacker Denzel Perryman (back) and wide receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring) are questionable. Tight end Hunter Henry remains on the COVID-19 list.

For the Broncos, running back Phillip Lindsay (hip/knee) has been ruled out and Royce Freeman (hip) is questionable, which means that Melvin Gordon will be plenty busy on Sunday.

Chargers’ Joey Bosa not expected to be shut down for remainder of season

Despite being concussed twice this season, Joey Bosa is still expected to play.

The Chargers have nothing to play for this season, as they have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. But that doesn’t mean that they’re going to keep one of their star players, who has been injured, off of the field for the remaining two games.

Edge defender Joey Bosa left last Thursday’s game with a concussion, which marked the second in an eight-week span. And while Bosa has been beat up with other various injuries, coach Anthony Lynn said that the team does not intend to shut him down for the rest of the season if he clears concussion protocol.

I said earlier that it would be wise to sit Bosa, especially when Los Angeles does not have anything on the line. If the team cares about his longevity, then they wouldn’t risk putting his body at risk in games that have zero significance.
