With a healthy roster, Chargers leave training camp as winners

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley made the health of the team a top priority.

After being decimated with injuries in prior years, the Chargers made it throughout the course of the summer with a relatively healthy roster ahead of the 2021 season.

The five starters along the offensive line, safety Derwin James, linebacker Drue Tranquill, among other players at key positions will be ready for the season opener against The Washington Football Team next weekend.

Knowing it was a serious problem in the past, head coach Brandon Staley made the health of the team a priority and it paid off.

“I think our camp is a validation,” Staley said. “I know that I’m very pleased. But I’m very happy because I know that (the players are) in a good place. And I know that they’re fully invested in what we’re doing and how we’re doing it.

In practices, Los Angeles had an activation time, which included stretching, and a lot of recovery time after. The volume of practice would fluctuate to ensure players were getting the right amount of work, yet tapering down to allow for proper restoration.

Staley also sidelined and minimized playing time of a handful of the key starters during the preseason.

Another big component of their durability was the hiring of Anthony Lomando as the director of sports performance.

Lomando spent the past nine years with the Broncos as their assistant strength and conditioning coach. Prior to that, he spent three seasons working on the strength and conditioning staff for the Jaguars.

Lomando also worked with the Qatar National and Olympic Soccer teams in 2007 and was responsible for preparing them for the World Cup and Olympic qualifying matches.

With Lomando’s expertise, he oversees a staff that provides elite strength and conditioning practices, while better protecting the players from injuries and helping them develop and perform at a higher level.

The Chargers have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, but player availability is going to play a big role in determining their success.

If and when the Bolts can stay healthy, they can make some serious noise this season.

Chargers injury updates: Justin Jackson, Mike Williams, Rashawn Slater

Checking in on the health of the Chargers following the preseason opener.

Following the preseason opener against the Rams, the Chargers returned to the practice field on Monday to prepare for their joint practices and preseason matchup with the 49ers this week.

Los Angeles remained relatively healthy coming off this past weekend, but players were still banged up.

Running back Justin Jackson, who sustained a groin injury, did not participate and he is not expected to be available this week, either.

Wide receiver Mike Williams has been dealing with a hip flexor injury and is expected to miss the two joint practices.

Offensive tackle Rashawn Slater did not practice today due to some tightness in his lower back, but the plan is for him to be ready for later this week.

Long snapper Cole Mazza suffered a shoulder injury and was wearing a sling at practice Monday. As insurance, the Chargers signed veteran Matt Overton.

Cornerback Ryan Smith, who has missed nearly the entire summer with a core injury, might not be ready for the start of the regular season.

Chargers’ Keenan Allen, Joey Bosa among players likely to be out vs. Chiefs

The Chargers don’t have anything to play for.

The Chargers have nothing to play for in the season finale this weekend against the Chiefs, which means that it’s not worth letting key players go out and worsen an injury that they’re dealing with.

Therefore, Los Angeles is likely to be without wide receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring) and edge defender Joey Bosa (concussion) and safety Rayshawn Jenkins (ankle), according to coach Anthony Lynn.

If Allen doesn’t play, he will be eight receiving yards shy from the 1,000-yard mark. The 28-year old has surpassed that the past three seasons, all of which he was named to the Pro Bowl.

Meanwhile, Bosa, another Pro Bowler, will finish with 39 total tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 15 tackles for loss.

Other notable players that likely will be unavailable this weekend are tight end Hunter Henry (COVID-19 list) and offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga (foot).

Injury updates on Chargers’ Austin Ekeler, Chris Harris, Jr.

One member of the Los Angeles Chargers could return this upcoming weekend.

The Chargers were hit with injuries to key players near the beginning of the season. In recent weeks, they got back some of them like tackle Bryan Bulaga and guard Trai Turner. But they’ve still been without a few other notables like running back Austin Ekeler and cornerback Chris Harris, Jr.

Ekeler, who’s been running now, used social media to hint when he would be returning, pegging a Week 12 as his ideal return date. But despite his optimism, coach Anthony Lynn said that “it would be nice” but didn’t offer much more than that.

Meanwhile, Harris returning this upcoming weekend against the Bills is more realistic. Lynn said that the team would like to see him on the field on Sunday after suffering a foot injury in Week 3. Last week, Harris was designated to return from the injured reserve.

We will update the status on both players as this week goes on.

Report: Chargers’ Uchenna Nwosu (shoulder) expected to miss a few weeks

Chargers linebacker Uchenna Nwosu sprained the AC joint in his shoulder.

Chargers linebacker Uchenna Nwosu went down with a shoulder injury in Sunday’s victory over the Jets and did not return to the game. Now, the team is preparing to be without him for a few games.

According to Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, Nwosu sprained the AC joint in his shoulder and is expected to miss roughly three weeks. Wilson added that there was concern, it was much more serious.

The injury occurred on a sack by linebacker Denzel Perryman. Nwosu was spotted laying on the ground along with a Jets offensive lineman. When he got up, he was pointing to the chest/shoulder area.

Nwosu has served as edge defender Melvin Ingram’s backup. This season, he’s started four games, all while Ingram missed time with his perspective injury, where he amassed 23 tackles, eight quarterback hits, 3.5 sacks and three tackles for loss.

Chargers’ Joey Bosa, Chris Harris, Jr. return to practice

Two key defenders returned to practice.

It might be a little too late since the Chargers’ playoff chances are slim to none now, but they could be getting some reinforcements back on the defensive side of the ball to help show some life in their final stretch of the season.

Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. returned to practiced on Wednesday after missing the past six games with a foot injury. Los Angeles designated Harris to return from injured reserve and have 21 days to decide whether to place him on the active 53-man roster.

Coach Anthony Lynn said that Harris will unlikely play this Sunday against the Jets.

Defensive end Joey Bosa, who’s missed the last two games with a concussion, was cleared from the concussion protocol and was a full participant during practice.

Bosa will likely revert back to the starting lineup this weekend.

Chargers’ Bryan Bulaga, Trai Turner viewed as game-time decisions vs. Broncos

There’s a chance the Chargers could have the original starting offensive line this weekend against the Broncos.

Chargers tackle Bryan Bulaga and guard Trai Turner have only played one drive together this season, as the two have been held out by their perspective injuries which are a groin and back, respectively.

The offensive line has produced a mixed bag of results, but the right side has arguably been the weakest out of the crop, which is the side that Bulaga and Turner man.

At the moment, there’s a 50-50 chance that we will see the two out on the field this weekend against the Broncos.

At Wednesday’s media availability, coach Anthony Lynn said Bulaga will “work his way in this week.” He alao said both Bulaga and Turner will “probably be game time decisions.”

Last week, Bulaga was a limited participant at each practice while Turner did not participate at all.

Lynn also updated the status on cornerback Chris Harris Jr.

Harris is on the injured reserve, and while he is now eligible to return after missing three games, Lynn said Harris is still expected to miss a few more weeks.

Week 7 injury updates from Chargers HC Anthony Lynn

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn provided updates on Austin Ekeler, Bryan Bulaga, Trai Turner and more.

To say the Chargers are injured would be an understatement.

The bye week in Week 6, however, came at the perfect time to allow players to rest and those who have missed some time to get healthier before taking the field for Los Angeles’ stretch of 11 straight games.

At Wednesday’s media availability, coach Anthony Lynn addressed the status of some key members of the team, starting with defensive tackle Justin Jones and defensive end Melvin Ingram.

Lynn said that Jones and Ingram will get some individual work this week. He added if they play then it would be on a snap count. Both guys were designated to return off the injured reserve Monday.

On the other side of the ball, guard Trai Turner and tackle Bryan Bulaga have missed a few weeks and have yet to play more than one drive together. The chances of them returning this weekend appear to be slim, as Lynn said the two “aren’t there yet.”

Without them on the field, the offensive line has struggled. Another position that has failed to put together solid production is the running back group ever since Austin Ekeler went down with a hamstring injury in the fourth week of the season.

Ekeler was placed on the IR and while reports said that it could be a six-week recovery process, he might be out longer than suggested.

Lynn said Ekeler’s return will be “later rather than sooner,” calling the hamstring injury “very serious.”

A player who appeared to be a long shot to return, but actually could is linebacker Drue Tranquill. Lynn said that Tranquill has a chance to return late this season.

Tranquill sustained a broken ankle in the season opener against the Bengals.

Chargers ‘open’ to looking into signing guard Quinton Spain

The Los Angeles Chargers would be wise to sign the 29-year old guard.

The Buffalo Bills released guard Quinton Spain on Wednesday.

The release of Spain drew the attention Chargers fans, knowing that Los Angeles’ offensive line struggled in the first few weeks without guard Trai Turner and tackle Bryan Bulaga.

The curiosity of L.A. having any interest in bringing in Spain was brought up at today’s media availability, as coach Anthony Lynn was asked if the team would consider signing him.

Lynn said the Chargers are “open” to looking into Spain. But he also added he’s comfortable with the offensive line depth until Turner and Bulaga return.

Turner and Bulaga’s return to the field remains to be seen. Lynn said the two “aren’t there yet.”

Signing Spain would be a smart move because he could fill in at the right guard spot, where there has been lackluster production from both backups Ryan Groy and Tyree St. Louis.

Groy has a Pro Football Focus grade of 54.1. He’s allowed 10 quarterback pressures and three hits. Meanwhile, St. Louis hasn’t done any better. He has a PFF grade of 37.7.

Spain, 29, has exemplified dominance as a pass protector. In 2019, Spain allowed zero sacks while with Buffalo.
