Recently cut Kai Forbath another kicking option for Giants

The Dallas Cowboys cut kicker Kai Forbath on Saturday, giving the New York Giants another option as they seek to replace Aldrick Rosas.

The New York Giants officially signed kicker Chandler Catanzaro on Friday, but don’t expect that to be the only move made by the team in an attempt to find a replacement for Aldrick Rosas.

The addition of Catanzaro was one of necessity and convenience, but it’s just step one in the Giants’ search for their starting kicker.

The Carolina Panthers released kicker Graham Gano earlier this week and given the familiarity between he and general manager Dave Gettleman, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if he were summoned to East Rutherford.

However, another potential option became available on Saturday with word that the Dallas Cowboys had cut kicker Kai Forbath.

The 32-year-old Forbath was originally signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of UCLA following the 2011 NFL Draft.

After spending his rookie season in Dallas, Forbath made a brief stop in Tampa Bay before joining the Washington Redskins, where he’s remain into the 2015 season. Then it was off to the New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots before again landing with Dallas late last season.

In 81 career games, Forbath has connected on 86.8% of his field goal attempts and 93.8% of his field goal attempts. His best season came in 2014 as a member of the Redskins when he made 88.9% of his field goals and 96.9% of his point after attempts.

Last season, Forbath split time between the Patriots and Cowboys, connecting on all 11 of his field goal attempts and 11 of his 12 point after attempts.

Giants claim WR Tony Brown off waivers, sign Chandler Catanzaro

The New York Giants have been awarded rookie wide receiver Tony Brown off of waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

The New York Giants continued to make adjustments to their roster depth on Saturday, claiming rookie wide receiver Tony Brown off of waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

Brown signed with Cleveland as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Colorado following the 2020 NFL Draft. Prior to transferring to Colorado in 2017, Brown spent two seasons playing at Texas Tech.

In 26 college games, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Brown hauled in 115 receptions for 1,418 yards and seven touchdowns. He also rushed the ball six times for 33 yards and one touchdown, and returned one kickoff for 15 yards.

Brown posted his best numbers as a senior in 2019, catching 56 balls for 707 yards and five touchdowns, earning an honorable All-Pac 10 mention.

Brown joins Derrick Dillon, Binjimen Victor and Austin Mack as undrafted free agent wide receivers on the Giants’ early 90-man roster.

Additionally, the Giants also officially announced the signing of kicker Chandler Catanzaro.

Giants will keep 90 players, opt for split-squad in camp

The New York Giants have become the first NFL team to opt for a split-squad roster of 90 players in training camp.

As part of their negotiations for the upcoming season, the NFL and NFLPA came to a recent agreement on an 80-man roster size and provided teams with two options on how to get there: cut 10 players by July 28 or go with a split-squad of 90 players until August 16 and then release 10 players.

Most NFL teams have immediately begun to cut players in an effort to trim their roster to 80, but the New York Giants decided to go in a different direction.

On Monday, the Giants became the first known NFL team to opt for a split-squad roster of 90 players, reports Jordan Raanan of ESPN.

The Giants’ roster currently sits at 87 following the signing of their entire 2020 draft class on Monday, the official release of kicker Aldrick Rosas, the release of rookie cornerback Malcolm Elmore with a non-football injury and the placement of cornerback DeAndre Baker on the commissioner’s exempt list.

It is widely expected that when veterans report to camp on Tuesday, that number will increase to 89 with the signing of linebacker Markus Golden and kicker Chandler Catanzaro.

How the Giants opt to fill that final roster spot remains to be seen, but at least for now, they will keep the maximum number of allowed players on their roster in an effort to evaluate as much talent as possible before the August 16 mandatory cut-down day.

What the release of Aldrick Rosas means for Giants’ cap

What does the release of former Pro Bowl kicker Aldrick Rosas mean for the New York Giants’ salary cap situation?

On Sunday, it was reported that the New York Giants will release former Pro Bowl kicker Aldrick Rosas due to his June arrest for a hit-and-run that resulted in three misdemeanor charges, including reckless driving on a highway, hit-and-run property damage and driving while suspended/revoked for DUI of alcohol/drugs.

Following word of his impending release, Rosas posted a “thank you” and “goodbye” on Instagram.

“I want to thank the Mara and Tisch family for the past three years with the New York Giants. It’s been an incredible ride and I’ve met so many amazing coaches and teammates!” Rosas wrote. “I wish I could’ve performed at the level I know I can play at, I have nothing but love toward the New York Giants. The values of character, love, and family are seen in every day life at the facility within the staff and management. Thank you to all my fans who showed love and support through the years! Go Giants.”

With Rosas now heading out the door in East Rutherford, what does that mean for the Giants’ salary cap situation?

The Giants placed a second-round restricted free agent tender on Rosas in March, which he signed in April, giving him a non-guaranteed $3.26 million salary for 2020.

Rosas’ release means that entire amount comes off the books for New York, and carries no dead cap with it. That boosts their total available cap to roughly $19.9 million, but a substantial portion of that will be eliminated in the coming days as their draft picks finally begin to sign their rookie deals.

That number also does not factor in the one-year deal being given to Chandler Catanzaro, who will reportedly be signed to replace Rosas. The exact financial details of that contract have yet to be released.

New York Giants cut Aldrick Rosas, signing Chandler Cantanzaro

The New York Giants are cutting kicker Aldrick Rosas, and signing former Jet Chandler Cantanzaro.

Aldrick Rosas has gone from kicking off for the New York Giants to being kicked off Big Blue following his arrest for an alleged hit-and-run in June.

Rosas had received a second-round tender from the team but that was before his arrest in California.

Rosas was driving a black Chevrolet SUV when a T-bone collision occurred. Witnesses saw Rosas driving erratically over the double yellow lines and at a speed estimated to be 100 mph when he ran a red light and hit a Ford pickup truck.

Rosas, 25, attempted to drive away from the scene of the crash before his vehicle became disabled. He exited and fled the scene on foot without shoes, according to the police report.

To replace the former Pro Bowler, New York is signing former Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro, according to ESPN, after cutting Rosas following his arrest for an alleged hit-and-run in June.

Catanzaro retired after missing two extra points in the preseason opener against the Giants in 2019. In 2017, Catanzaro made 25-of-30 field-goal attempts. He spent 2018 with the Panthers and Buccaneers before being brought back to the Jets to replace departed Pro Bowler Jason Myers. Catanzaro spent his first three NFL seasons with the Cardinals.

Report: Giants to sign kicker Chandler Catanzaro

The New York Giants will sign kicker Chandler Catanzaro to replace the recently departed Aldrick Rosas.

The New York Giants were in the market for a kicker and then, in an instant, they weren’t.

Following a June 15 arrest for a hit-and-run followed by three subsequent chargers, word leaked on Sunday that the Giants would release veteran kicker Aldrick Rosas.

Although the team did not necessarily need to rush to replace Rosas given that the preseason has been canceled and practices are not expected to take place for several weeks, the Giants forged full-speed ahead anyway.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Giants will sign former New York Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro.

Catanzaro originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson following the 2014 NFL Draft, and remained with the team through the 2016 season.

In 2017, Catanzaro spent a year with the Jets before playing with both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers in 2018.

Catanzaro returned to the Jets briefly in 2019, but announced his retirement five months after signing. He remained on the team’s reserve/left squad until being released earlier this week.

In 77 career games, Catanzaro has connected on 83.8% of his field goal attempts and 92.9% of his point after attempts.

Jets officially cut Chandler Catanzaro after 2019 retirement

The Jets have cut Chandler Catanzaro from reserve/left squad list.

Roughly a year after Chandler Catanzaro moved on from the Jets, the Jets are finally moving on from Chandler Catanzaro.

The Jets cut the kicker from the reserve/left squad list this week, thus making him a free agent, according to Dov Kleiman. Catanzaro announced his retirement last August after a tough summer with New York. The Jets originally placed him on the exempt/left squad list before moving him to reserve/left squad list.

Catanzaro, also known as Catman during his time in New York, kicked well for the Jets in 2017. He went 25-30 on his field goal attempts and was a perfect 29-29 on extra points. Catanzaro also owns the longest field goal made in Jets history at 57 yards.

Catanzaro went on to sign a three-year contract with the Buccaneers prior to the 2018 season, but he didn’t perform well there. He missed four field goals and four extra points in just nine games in Tampa Bay. The Panthers took a chance on Catanzaro for four games and he made all of his field goals attempts and made all but one extra point. Catanzaro then returned to the Jets last offseason before retiring.

The 29-year-old went undrafted out of Clemson in 2014 before being signed by the Arizona Cardinals. He spent three seasons in Arizona and was 78-92 on field goals and 123-132 on extra points.

4 free agent kickers the Jets should target

Here are four free agent kickers the Jets should target in free agency.

After a revolving door of kickers came through One Jets Drive in 2019, New York is in the market for a legman once again.

The Jets planned on Chandler Catanzaro being their starting place kicker last season, but he decided to retire during training camp. Then came Kaare Vedvik, who lasted all of one game for the Jets. They finished the season with Sam Ficken, who had his ups and downs and is now an impending free agent.

Kicking was a huge problem for the Jets in 2019 and they need to find stability at the position. They can’t lose games because of their kicker missing an extra point or field goal.

So, let’s take a look at what kickers New York can target in free agency.

Ka’imi Fairbairn

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Ka’imi Fairbain is one of the youngest available kickers and he has been pretty consistent over his three-year career.

Fairbain has made at least 80 percent of his field goals in three seasons with the Texans. His best season came in 2018 when he went 37-42 on field goal attempts. Last season, Fairbain didn’t get as many opportunities, but was 20-25.

The only concern with Fairbain is kicking from 50+ yards out. In 2019, Fairbain made 50 percent of his field goals from 50 or more yards. He was better from that distance the two previous years at 66.7 and 75 percent.

At 26 years old, Fairbain would be a solid get for the Jets. He won’t come cheap, but if the Jets want to have a consistent kicker, then they should pay Fairbain what he’s worth.
