The New York Giants officially signed kicker Chandler Catanzaro on Friday, but don’t expect that to be the only move made by the team in an attempt to find a replacement for Aldrick Rosas.
The addition of Catanzaro was one of necessity and convenience, but it’s just step one in the Giants’ search for their starting kicker.
The Carolina Panthers released kicker Graham Gano earlier this week and given the familiarity between he and general manager Dave Gettleman, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if he were summoned to East Rutherford.
However, another potential option became available on Saturday with word that the Dallas Cowboys had cut kicker Kai Forbath.
The 32-year-old Forbath was originally signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of UCLA following the 2011 NFL Draft.
After spending his rookie season in Dallas, Forbath made a brief stop in Tampa Bay before joining the Washington Redskins, where he’s remain into the 2015 season. Then it was off to the New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots before again landing with Dallas late last season.
In 81 career games, Forbath has connected on 86.8% of his field goal attempts and 93.8% of his field goal attempts. His best season came in 2014 as a member of the Redskins when he made 88.9% of his field goals and 96.9% of his point after attempts.
Last season, Forbath split time between the Patriots and Cowboys, connecting on all 11 of his field goal attempts and 11 of his 12 point after attempts.
