Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt once again unhappy with LSU’s placement in College Football Playoff Rankings

Klatt is again complaining about LSU’s placement in the rankings.

When the initial College Football Playoff Rankings debuted a few weeks ago ahead of LSU’s contest against Alabama, the biggest surprise was the Tigers’ placement at No. 10 — significantly higher than either the AP Top 25 or USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

At that time, one of the biggest critics of that decision was Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt, who bemoaned the committee’s decision to put LSU ahead of several teams he deemed more deserving.

The Tigers proved they belonged in the top 10 with an upset win over Alabama, which led to an SEC West title and a shot at the College Football Playoff if they win out.

Those odds look pretty high after LSU stayed at No. 5, one spot ahead of USC despite the Trojans’ road win against UCLA. Once again, Klatt wasn’t pleased with the committee’s decision.

“This committee is clearly not looking at what happened in the last couple of weeks and evaluating as such,” Klatt said. “Remember, LSU did beat Alabama — and, great, good for them. That was a great game. They beat them on that two-point conversion. Then, they followed that up with a three-point win against Arkansas, the week after Arkansas lost to Liberty. Then, LSU plays UAB.

“So, I’m sorry, what? Why are we honoring them? Why are they staying there? It’s clearly because the committee wants to honor their previous rankings or their previous notions about who these teams are rather than what we see actually on the field.”

“In those same two weeks, by the way, USC pounded Colorado — and, I get it. Colorado’s not a great team right now. But then they follow that up with a win against UCLA on the road,” Klatt said. “That UCLA team, by the way, beat two teams in the committee’s own top 25, Washington and Utah. USC’s also got the best player right now that I’ve seen in college football in Caleb Williams, who in his last five games has taken college football by storm.

“So when things like this happen, it’s pretty clear that college football fans are going to distrust the system. That’s not good for anybody, and when we’re rewarding teams and letting teams slide on things like three-point wins against Arkansas and playing UAB in November, I think it’s a bad message to send. In some respects, the committee is not even doing their job. Please evaluate these teams on a weekly basis and give us some adjustment based on what’s happening on the field.”

While there may be legitimate debate about the No. 5 spot, the situation will likely sort itself out considering LSU must take down Georgia to remain in the mix, while USC closes the year against Notre Dame and likely Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship.

CFP committee chair explains why Clemson is ranked behind Alabama

When the latest College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night, one-loss Clemson came in ranked behind two-loss Alabama for the third consecutive week.

The Crimson Tide (9-2, 5-2 SEC) moved up from No. 8 to No. 7 in the latest rankings, while the Tigers (10-1, 8-0 ACC) slid up a spot from No. 9 to No. 8.

On ESPN’s College Football Playoff: Top 25 show, host Rece Davis interviewed Boo Corrigan, NC State’s athletic director who also serves as the CFP selection committee chair.

Davis asked Corrigan what Clemson does at an elite level that looks like a playoff team, and how Corrigan would describe the discussion about the Tigers and the evaluation of them within the committee meeting room.

Corrigan went on to explain why the CFP committee has Clemson ranked behind Alabama.

“You’re looking at the football judgement, right, as we’re going through this,” Corrigan said. “Clemson’s 6-1 against teams over .500, Alabama’s 6-2 with teams over .500. They’ve got the two close losses, obviously Alabama does. And then that game against Notre Dame, that 35-14 game, continues to be part of the discussion.

“You look at Clemson — defensively, they’ve got some dudes up front that are making plays and doing things, too. But overall, we saw Alabama as being 7 and Clemson 8.”

Clemson’s lone loss, of course, came by a score of 35-14 at Notre Dame (now ranked No. 15 in the latest CFP rankings) on Nov. 5 in South Bend.

Alabama suffered a pair of losses at Tennessee and at LSU on a last-second field goal and two-point conversion in overtime, respectively.

The Tigers will wrap up the regular season against rival South Carolina at Death Valley on Saturday (12 p.m., ABC), while the Tide will play host to Auburn for the annual Iron Bowl (3:30 p.m., CBS).

ESPN analyst: Clemson ‘the team that should be most frustrated right now’

Clemson moved up one spot in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night but is still currently on the outside looking in at the playoff, coming in at No. 8 in the rankings with one week left in the regular season before conference championship weekend.

The team that Clemson (10-1, 8-0 ACC) will play in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 3, North Carolina (9-2, 6-1), fell four spots to No. 17 in the latest CFP rankings after losing to an unranked team in Georgia Tech last Saturday.

While the Tigers have taken care of business in the ACC throughout a perfect regular season of conference play, they haven’t gotten a whole lot of help from the rest of the league as far as the playoff is concerned.

And ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy thinks Dabo Swinney’s team should be disgruntled by that.

“The team that should be most frustrated right now is Clemson, because ultimately it’s not their fault that North Carolina lost,” McElroy said Tuesday night on ESPN’s College Football Playoff: Top 25 show.

Clemson owns wins over the other two ACC teams that appeared in the latest CFP rankings — Florida State (No. 16) and Louisville (No. 25) — though since the initial CFP rankings were unveiled on Nov. 1, three other teams in the conference that the Tigers have beaten (Syracuse, Wake Forest and NC State) have all fallen out of the rankings.

Clemson’s lone loss came to a non-ACC foe in Notre Dame, 35-14, on Nov. 5 in South Bend. The Irish now occupy the No. 15 spot in the latest CFP rankings.

“If you look at the rest of the ACC, Clemson has done what they needed to do,” McElroy said. “They sit there with one loss — that one loss is hideous, don’t get me wrong, but (No. 9) Oregon also has a hideous loss as well (49-3 to Georgia on Sept. 3) — and I think Clemson right now, to be in the position that they’re in, they just haven’t been benefitted by the rest of the ACC to help prop them up in an effort to kind of get back within striking distance of those top four.”

Herbstreit on Bama ranking above Clemson, what makes Tigers look like playoff team

While Clemson (10-1, 8-0 ACC) moved up one spot from No. 9 to No. 8 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night, the Tigers still stayed one spot behind Alabama (9-2, 5-2 SEC), which moved up from No. 8 to No. 7. However, …

While Clemson (10-1, 8-0 ACC) moved up one spot from No. 9 to No. 8 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night, the Tigers still stayed one spot behind Alabama (9-2, 5-2 SEC), which moved up from No. 8 to No. 7.

However, ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit doesn’t think the fact Clemson is behind Alabama matters right now, and that the Tigers would ultimately jump ahead of the Crimson Tide if they beat South Carolina this Saturday and then win the ACC Championship Game vs. North Carolina (now No. 17 in the latest CFP rankings) on Dec. 3.

“I don’t think it matters where Alabama and Clemson are because of that opportunity (for Clemson) to get to Charlotte and win a conference championship,” Herbstreit said on ESPN’s College Football Playoff: Top 25 show

“You guys keep alluding to it, all of a sudden they’re playing a hot South Carolina team. You get the ACC Championship, I think no matter what, whether they’re ahead of Alabama or behind, I think they’d go by them.”

Herbstreit was later asked what the Tigers do well, in his eyes, that makes them look like a playoff-caliber team.

“Defense, run the football with (Will) Shipley,” he said. “DJ (Uiagalelei)’s up and down. I don’t know if you can really hang your hat right now on their ability to throw the football if teams are able to match up with their run game. But they do play great defense, which keeps them in almost every game they play. They’ve got a defensive line, when they’re all healthy and able to play, they can take over football games.

“So, I think if you’re going to say what do they do where just a football judgement, for me that’s what it would be — trying to get Shipley going and trying to be able to play great defense and hope that DJ is on that day. Because when he’s on, guys, he can still be very effective with some of the receivers that they have.”

LSU enters the top five of the College Football Playoff Rankings heading into rivalry weekend

The Tigers rank No. 5 after Tennessee’s loss on Saturday.

The Tigers still remain at No. 6 in the Coaches and AP Polls, with USC remaining ahead in both and jumping them after Week 12 in the latter.

But in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings, which were released Tuesday night ahead of the final weekend of the regular season, LSU has moved up one spot into the top five.

The top four of Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU, all of which are 11-0, remain unchanged this week. USC moved up a spot but didn’t jump LSU despite taking down a ranked UCLA squad on the road and only having one loss on the year.

Here’s how things stand in the top 10 entering rivalry week.

Clemson moves up again in the latest College Football Playoff rankings

Swinney and the Tigers move up a spot in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

The third installment of the College Football Playoff rankings was released Tuesday night, with Clemson moving up a spot after their 40-10 home win over Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes.

The Tigers 10-1 (8-0 ACC) moved up to No.8 in the rankings as all but one team ahead of them last week lost. Former No.5 Tennessee lost to Clemson’s upcoming opponent and rival South Carolina in a massive 63-38 upset.

Two loss Alabama ranked No.7, ahead of Swinney and the Tigers though Crimson Tide will not make an SEC Championship appearance which gives Clemson an advantage. The Tigers’ opponent in the ACC Championship game, North Carolina, dropped from No.13 to No.17 after a loss to Georgia Tech.

Clemson’s rivalry weekend matchup against South Carolina is going to be an exciting one.

How does Carter feel about Clemson’s playoff chances if Tigers win out?

Barrett Carter tries not to pay much attention to the College Football Playoff rankings or how the teams ahead of Clemson in the rankings are faring on a weekly basis.

Instead, the sophomore linebacker’s focus lies on the Tigers’ next opponent each week and what he needs to do to help his team win its own game.

“I’m really focused on the game that we’re about to play,” Carter said Monday. “Honestly, I look at the rankings just to see what’s new and everything. But I’m really just focused on us as a team and just leading the guys, focused on what opponent we have next. I try not to really focus on any other team but us, just because I want to help lead our team and just help us gain success. So, I try not to pay attention to it.”

Carter admitted he does, however, take a peek at where the playoff committee puts the Tigers in their weekly rankings released on Tuesdays.

“I do check our rankings, though,” he said. “I do check that, for sure.”

Clemson (10-1, 8-0 ACC) moved up one spot to No. 9 in the latest set of CFP rankings that came out a week ago. The Tigers started out at No. 4 in the initial playoff rankings before tumbling to No. 10 after their upset loss at Notre Dame on Nov. 5.

The CFP committee’s top four has stayed the same over the last two weeks, with Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU comprising the No. 1-4 spots, respectively.

Tennessee, LSU, Southern Cal, Alabama, Clemson and Utah rounded out the top 10 of the latest CFP rankings, in that order. Of the teams ahead of Clemson, only Tennessee lost this past Saturday, falling 63-38 at South Carolina.

The new CFP rankings will be unveiled Tuesday (7 p.m., ESPN). It’s the fourth of six sets of rankings that are released weekly through November and in early December. The final CFP top 25 will be announced on selection day, which is Sunday, Dec. 4.

If Clemson wins out, beating South Carolina on Saturday and then winning the ACC Championship Game vs. North Carolina, does Carter feel pretty good about the Tigers’ chances of making the playoff?

“I do feel really good about it,” he said. “Anything can happen in college football on any given Saturday. So, I feel  good about our chances. But if it’s not meant to be, then shoot, we’ll play in whatever game and we’re gonna get the win. But I’m really confident about it. I think we’ll be in a good spot.”

National analyst says Clemson overrated, only in top 10 because of brand

Following the release of the third set of College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night, a national college football analyst and writer published an article giving who he sees as the overrated and underrated teams in the latest CFP Rankings.

The first team that CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee mentioned as overrated?

Clemson (9-1, 7-0 ACC), which moved up one spot to No. 9 in the newest edition of the CFP rankings.

Sallee explained why he considers the Tigers to be overrated, pointing to the eye test with Clemson as well as its resume.

Here’s what Sallee wrote:

Eye test is part of the criteria for the CFP Selection Committee, and it’s hard to justify Clemson passing it — at least from an offensive perspective. Its quarterback, DJ Uiagalelei, has been benched twice for ineffective play, and the Tigers offense has sputtered more times than run down truck with an engine about to give out.

The Tigers are looking to earn their 10th win of the season on Saturday when they play host to Miami (5-5, 3-3 ACC) at Death Valley. A victory over the Hurricanes would give Clemson a school-record 12th consecutive season with at least 10 wins.

After the Miami game (3:30 p.m., ESPN), Clemson will clash with rival South Carolina at Death Valley to conclude the regular season before heading to Charlotte for the ACC Championship Game against North Carolina on Dec. 3.
