Eastern Michigan vs San Jose State Famous Idaho Potato Bowl 5 Things To Know

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

There was a moment when it seemed like San Jose State would be the star of the Mountain West, and possibly be in the run for a New Year’s Six spot. It started 4-1 with a close loss at Auburn, and was 6-2 with the conference there for the taking. Even with a tough 1-2 finish, this is still a fun team with QB Chevan Cordeiro leading a strong offense to go along with one of the nation’s most aggressive defenses.

Eastern Michigan couldn’t find the slightest bit of consistency over the first two months, but the team found ways to get the job done in a phenomenal finishing kick. Just when it seemed like the wheels might come off, it went 4-1 to close. All of a sudden, the inconsistent team was able to consistently win.

This is just the seventh bowl game in the history of Eastern Michigan football – it hasn’t exactly been a lot of fun. The program is 1-5, losing the last four under head coach Chris Creighton including last year’s LendingTree to Liberty 56-20. However, the lone win came in the 1987 California Bowl against …

San Jose State. It might have lost to the Eagles in 1987, but it’s 7-4 overall in bowls and 4-1 since the loss. Bowl games are hardly a regular thing, though, with a 34-13 loss to Ball State in the 2020 Arizona Bowl – the Spartans were missing a ton of players with COVID – the last appearance since wining the 2015 Cure.

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl has been rolling since 1997 when it was called the Humanitarian Bowl. The game is way overdue for something interesting with the last six decided by nine points or more. To be fair, though, there were some insane shootouts – like the Idaho 61-50 win over Colorado State in 2016. For the most part, though, this has been one of the most lopsided bowls over the last decade.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

The Eagle offense is relatively steady on the ground, has a good passing attack at times, and it’s not turning the ball over enough lately to matter with just two turnovers in the last five games.

Against San Jose State’s defense, just keep things moving. It’ll hold up well and force more field goals than allow touchdowns on long drives, but it’s not great on third downs. Eastern Michigan was the best in the MAC at converting its third down chances hitting 45% of its tries.

On the other side, the Eagle pass defense is in the spotlight. It finished second in the MAC, and the team was 6-1 when allowing fewer than 240 passing yards.

There’s a decent pass rush that shouldn’t have a problem getting into the backfield – San Jose State doesn’t have a ground game and the line allows too many sacks.

However …

Why San Jose State Will Win The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

The San Jose State defensive front lives behind the line.

It’s among the best in the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss, and it should be able to get to the Eastern Michigan backfield enough to be a problem.

On the flip side, the Eagles don’t do much on the offensive front. San Jose State doesn’t do much with the ground game, but it should be able to grind a wee bit – it’s more about yards per carry than bulk yards.

Again, Eastern Michigan has been solid at keeping the turnovers to a minimum lately, but it’s dead even in turnover margin on the season and San Jose State is +12, has yet to turn the ball over more than once, and it doesn’t have the penalty issues the other side has.

Liberty vs Toledo RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl 5 Things To Know

RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Liberty is in a transitional phase. It ended the regular season with a thud after starting 8-1, losing its last three games including an embarrassing 49-14 home whacking from New Mexico State.

Head coach Hugh Freeze bolted for Auburn, and now the program is waiting to get the former Coastal Carolina head man Jamey Chadwell’s era going. Josh Aldridge will be the interim head coach, there are plenty of great parts in place, and there’s still firepower.

Toledo wasn’t perfect, it had a whole lot of turnover problems, and it struggled late in the regular season as it limped into the MAC Championship. One terrific defensive performance against Ohio later in a 17-7 win, and head coach Jason Candle has his second conference title in six season. Now …

He and Toledo need to win a bowl game. Candle stepped in as an interim head man in the 2015 Boca Raton Bowl, and Toledo pulled off the 32-17 win over Temple. That’s been it for the bowl fun going 0-4 since then including a 31-24 Bahamas loss to Middle Tennessee last year. The team was able to keep it close in three of the losses, but that’s not enough – winning this matters.

Liberty has been perfect in the bowls. Hugh Freeze took the Flames to three straight bowls and it won all three, with last year’s LendingTree 56-20 win over Eastern Michigan the most dominant of the group. Again, this season’s bowl version is going through some changes, but the program knows how to get up for these.

If nothing else, the Boca Raton bowls have put on some great offensive shows. They haven’t been all that close – none of the eight were decided by fewer than 15 points – but the winning side hung up 50 points or more four times and 32 or more in the other four.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Liberty Will Win The RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl

The pass rush continues to be devastating.

The offense might have slipped late, and the team completely lost its focus, but it’s still bringing one of the nation’s most dangerous defensive fronts that leads the nation in tackles for loss and is fourth in sacks. That’s a huge problem for Toledo.

The Rocket offensive line isn’t awful in pass protection, but it allows close to seven tackles for loss per game. That’s a concern, and the bigger one is a case of the turnovers that almost crushed the end of the regular season.

Toledo didn’t turn it over in the MAC Championship win over Ohio, but before that it gave it away 16 times in the previous five games.

That’s all fine, but what’s the problem with Liberty? There were a whole lot of injures, but the passing game still managed to finish with 200 yards or more in ever game but a win over Akron, the rushing attack is good enough to get to 200, and …

Why Toledo Will Win The RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl

Liberty has bigger turnover problems than Toledo.

The Rocket miscues came in a late flurry, but Liberty has cranked out a steady stream of screwups with two or more in nine of the 12 games. They haven’t always been lethal – the mistakes are baked into the cake – but the defense doesn’t come up with a ton of takeaways.

At the very least, Toledo probably won’t get hurt if it starts giving the ball away, especially if its secondary can come up with its usual pick or two.

Offensively, the Rockets need to run well. They have a good group to work into the rotation, QB Dequan Finn is dangerous no matter what he does, and the team is 5-0 when running for 225 yards or more.

What was Liberty’s biggest problem over the rough last stretch? The run defense went bye-bye – allowing almost 600 yards and 11 touchdowns in the last three games.

Marshall vs UConn Myrtle Beach Bowl 5 Things To Know

Myrtle Beach Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

How did Jim Mora Jr. not make every Coach of the Year list? Before 2022, UConn won exactly ten games since 2015, hadn’t had a winning season since 2010, didn’t play in 2020, and a 2019 victory over UMass was the lone win against an FBS team since the middle of the 2017 season. Mora’s team shocked Fresno State as it went on a 5-1 run to get bowl eligible before dropping the regular season finale. This has been a wildly successful year no matter what happens here.

It’s been a crazy season for Marshall. It made a massive splash with a shocking win over Notre Dame, and then it promptly followed it up with a loss to Bowling Green as part of a rough 2-4 run with a tough November looming. The switch was flipped, the defense took things up a notch, and the Herd closed out 4-0.

For years Marshall was a bowl season given. It lost its first two, and then from 1998 to 2018 it went 12-1, with the only loss coming to Cincinnati in the 2004 Fort Worth. Along that ride was a 16-10 win over UConn in the 2015 St. Petersburg. Now it’s on a three-bowl losing streak including a 36-21 rocking from Louisiana in last year’s New Orleans Bowl.

It’s just the seventh bowl appearance in the history of UConn football. It’s 3-3 with the last win coming over South Carolina in the 2009 PapaJohn.com Bowl. The only bowl between this and the 2010 Fiesta loss to Oklahoma was that loss to Marshall. Yeah, this game means something.

The Myrtle Beach Bowl is only in its third season, but the first two games at least were interesting. It’s become a landing place for good Group of Five programs, and it’s got the college football day all to itself on a Monday afternoon. Appalachian State ran wild in a 56-28 win over North Texas in the inaugural game, and Tulsa’s 30-17 win over Old Dominion last year was more entertaining than the final score.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Marshall Will Win The Myrtle Beach Bowl

It’s a nice UConn team, but it’s about to run into a brick wall – not literally, but almost.

Marshall might not have a high-powered offense, but the run defense has been tremendous all year long, finishing fifth in the nation allowing just 88 yards per game. No one was able to get to 200 on this bunch – not Notre Dame, not Appalachian State, not Coastal Carolina – and UConn has to run well to win.

The Huskies were able to pull off a few wins when the ground game wasn’t flying, but the O line allows way too many plays behind the line, third downs are almost impossible to convert, and the passing attack does nothing down the field – UConn is dead last in the nation in yards per completion.

On the other side, Marshall is 6-0 when running for 200 yards or more. UConn is 1-6 when allowing more than 155 yards, but ….

Why UConn Will Win The Myrtle Beach Bowl

The running game really could work.

Granted, it cranked up the big yards against some of the worst run defenses in America, but with time to prepare and get everyone healthy again, the offense is about to hit Marshall with a wave of young backs.

Zion Turner is a dangerous young quarterback who can get on the move, the running backs should push for close to five yards per carry, and it should be able to slow the game down a bit.

The UConn defense doesn’t do too much to get behind the line, but it doesn’t take much to disrupt the Marshall attack. The passing game isn’t great, the O is miserable at converting drives into points, and the line is way too leaky.

However …

Why Miami Dolphins Will Win

The Dolphin run defense is good enough to hold up. The O wasn’t anything special in the 21-19 win in Week 3, but the defense did a lot of bending without breaking, keeping the Bills to 115 rushing yards.

And the conditions were great.

The passing in this isn’t going to happen in the snow – Tua Tagovailoa coming off a horrible performance in the 23-17 loss to the Chargers – and it’s going to take a big day from the D.

There aren’t a slew of takeaways coming from this group on a regular basis, and Buffalo has chilled on the giveaways, but the defensive front that allowed fewer than 90 rushing yards in two of the last three games should win its share of battles.

But …

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27
NFL Expert Picks Week 15

Why Buffalo Bills Will Win

Miami lives on the big deep plays, and those might not happen.

It’s possible Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill, and company will be able to take advantage of the conditions and go off – they know where they’re going and might have better footing – but the offense has to run to get this done. That’s a problem with an offense that runs it the second-fewest times in the NFL.

Buffalo doesn’t have to get crazy.

It’s got the rotation of backs to go along with Josh Allen keeping things moving, and slow and steady might be enough to win this race.

All that, and …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Buffalo. It’s Buffalo weather. The Bills were able to get through it all against the Jets last week thanks to the defense, and the same thing should work again.

Don’t expect any consistency whatsoever offensively, but don’t assume Miami will whither up and die in the cold. The Buffalo defense will be good enough, the running attack will work, and three takeaways will help.

Why Indianapolis Colts Will Win

Can Indianapolis throw at all?

The Minnesota secondary has been injured/bad/ineffective, getting hammered for close to 300 or more passing yards in each of the last five games and 297 or more in seven of the last eight.

Overall the Vikings are dead last in the NFL in total defense, last in pass defense, and the Colts have just enough with Matt Ryan – as rocky as he has been – to push for over 200 yards.

The idea is to get Jonathan Taylor and the ground game going to keep the Viking offense off the field, but Ryan, your table is ready.

However …

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27
NFL Expert Picks Week 15

Why Minnesota Vikings Will Win

The Colts don’t have the personnel to keep up in a shootout if Taylor can’t get rolling.

Parris Campbell and Alec Pierce are nice, but it’s going to be more about spreading the offense around instead of bombing away deep. The Colts will get their yards, but they struggle to score – they’re second-worst in the NFL in scoring O, the defense doesn’t take it away enough, and the run defense can be moved on.

Minnesota’s loss to the Lions might have been rough, but the offense worked. The passing game clicked just fine, but now it’s time to get the running game going – the Colts have allowed 140 yards or more in each of the last three games, so …

What’s Going To Happen

The Vikings are 8-0 when running for 77 yards or more, and Indianapolis has allowed 77 or more in every game but two.

Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison will take the heat off the passing game, but the Vikings will be balanced enough to offset another awful day from the secondary.

The Colts are 3-0-1 when scoring 20 points or more, and they’ll get there. It still won’t be enough.

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl What Happened

UTSA got up 12-0 on a Troy snap out of the end zone for a safety, and helped by a two-yard Frank Harris touchdown pass to Zaire Franklin. That was it for the Roadrunner scores as mistake after mistake proved costly.

Troy scored 19 unanswered points, highlighted by a Gunnar Watson 12-yard touchdown pass to RaJae Johnson to capitalize off a Keyshawn Swanson pick near the end zone to stall a UTSA drive.

– UTSA is going to be kicking itself for this one. It had a 12-0, but turned it over five times, got hit with nine penalties – one big one that kept a drive alive – and allowed a fake punt for a first down, and yet it had chance after chance to take over. UTSA’s offense suffered drop after drop – not helped by some questionable play calls – along with all of those mistakes. However …

Give the Trojans credit. The offense didn’t work all that well, the defense bent a bit too much, and they couldn’t put the game away despite all the UTSA errors. The defense came up with stop after stop, overcame its own mistakes, and got the thrilling bowl win.

2022-2023 Bowl Schedule, Predictions

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl Player of the Game

KJ Robertson, LB Troy
Several Troy defensive players could’ve been here – Carlton Martial led the team with 14 tackles and CB Reddy Steward had a huge day. Robertson did a little of everything with 9 tackles with an interception.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 20-27

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl Fun Stats

– Total offense: UTSA 345 – Troy 153

– Penalties: UTSA 9 for 105 yards, Troy 2 for 22 yards

– Turnovers: UTSA 5, Troy 2

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl What It All Means

Troy closed out one of its best – if not the strongest – seasons in the program’s history, and it was the strongest in the 22 years since moving up to the FCS world. Not bad for Jon Sumrall’s first season. Along with a Sun Belt Championship and now a Cure Bowl win, the 12 wins push pass the 11-2 2017 season. This also makes it five straight bowl wins going back to 2010.

UTSA was fantastic all season long, and it had this game in its hands, but couldn’t come through. It was still a fantastic season with a Conference USA title, but the program is still winless in bowl games – 0-4 losing the last three years – and it wasn’t able to match last year’s 12-2 season.

Why San Francisco 49ers Will Win

Can Brock Purdy go? The unsung starting quarterback was terrific in the blowout win over Tampa Bay, but he’s pushing through rib and oblique injury issues. However, even if he’s struggling – he’s expected to start – the defense should be able to pick up most of the slack.

The 49ers are No. 1 in the NFL in both scoring and total defense, doing a particularly amazing job against the pass. It leads the NFL in pass D, is second against the run … it’s doing everything right.

Seattle is having a bit of a turnover problem with two in each of the last three games and at least one in every game. The San Francisco defense has forced 11 takeaways in the last four games.

However …

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27
NFL Expert Picks Week 15

Why Seattle Seahawks Will Win

San Francisco got beaten up against Tampa Bay.

Purdy is questionable at very best. Christian McCaffrey has a knee problem, and Deebo Samuel is out for a few weeks with an ankle injury. Josh Johnson might be a veteran quarterback, but now the team is potentially down to its No. 4 option.

Seattle should be getting its star back with Kenneth Walker expected to give it a go with an ankle injury, and now comes the offensive balance. The team couldn’t get the O going in the first meeting – a 27-7 loss in Week 2 – but this might be about the defense.

It hasn’t been good. The Seahawks are 30th in the NFL in total defense and can’t stop the run, but it’s 6-0 when allowing fewer than 150 rushing yards. With all of the injuries, getting to 150 isn’t a given no matter how the 49ers are able to mix up the carries.

What’s Going To Happen

The San Francisco defense should be able to take over at times to overcome the problems on offense, but the short week is a killer.

Everything works great for the 49ers at home – it’s 6-1 with the only loss coming to Kansas City – and it’s 3-3 on the road.

Seattle has lost three of its last four – and there’s a problem when you lose at home to Carolina – but its defense will crank it up on a home Thursday night to keep it close until the end.

That D on the other side, though, will be too good.

What the experts are predicting: Notre Dame vs. BYU

Looks like not many people have faith in the Irish.

After a week off, Notre Dame is back in action for its annual Shamrock Series game, which is in Las Vegas this year. BYU is the school that gets to face the Irish in an event that typically goes Notre Dame’s way. Will it happen again?

What the experts are predicting: Notre Dame at North Carolina

The experts appear to be split this week.

Notre Dame will attempt to get to .500 for the first time this season Saturday when it visits North Carolina. It’s all part of the quest to still make a respectable bowl game. We’ll see how far they’ve come in a week and whether that particular bowl goal remains a possibility.
