Ball State vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

The passing game is working just fine.

It bombed away Georgia Southern in a loss, it hit Northern Illinois for over 400 yards in a win, and it’s about to crank it up against a mediocre Central Michigan pass defense that’s getting hit for 264 yards per game.

Turnovers are Central Michigan’s biggest problem with nine over the last three games and without the takeaways to make up for it.

Just assume 300 yards from the Ball State passing game and at least two takeaways. But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewa offense is struggling to score, but it’s getting just enough from the passing game to keep moving.

The ground attack has been a major disappoint, but it’s been a rough run on the road and South Alabama is a good team that showed up big in Mount Pleasant in a 38-24 win.

Ball State’s defense isn’t anything special. It’s not going to generate any pass rush and – in a big relief for the Cardinals – it’s not taking the ball away.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan is way overdue for a big performance, but Ball State’s passing game is playing too well. The Chippewas need to get the running game going, and that’s just not happening.

Ball State is better equipped for a passing game fight.

Central Michigan vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

There’s a chance Toledo is just plain tired.

These are college kids and they bounce back in a hurry, but they went from getting hit by Ohio State for 77 points, to traveling out to San Diego where they played on a hot day in a rough late 17-14 loss to SDSU.

Now they’re back home.

Central Michigan wasn’t able to do much in the 33-14 loss to Penn State, but overall the defense has been great on third downs, the passing game continues to be solid, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Toledo Will Win

The Central Michigan offense is struggling.

The passing game that looked so good in blowout mode in the 58-44 loss to Oklahoma State has been painfully inconsistent over the last three weeks, and the O is now having issues with turnovers.

The defense might be doing an okay job at times, but the pass rush isn’t there to match the tackles for loss against the run.

Toledo’s passing game has alway been a bit off, but the pass defense has been wonderful so far – outside of the 482 yards from Ohio State in that debacle – and Central Michigan hasn’t come up with enough of a running game to take advantage of the Rocket’s issues on the defensive front.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both of these teams have the talent to be in the MAC Championship mix, both of them have shown flashes of potential excellent, and both of them have been very, very – sorry to keep using this word, but it fits – inconsistent.

Toledo will get more from its running game to settle in a bit. Neither team will pull away in turnovers, but the home side will get just a bit more out of its defense.

Report Card: Grading Penn State’s Week 4 performance vs. Central Michigan

Penn State football report card: The grades are in for the Nittany Lions after a win over Central Michigan.

Not every game has to be as pretty as the last two weeks had been for Penn State. Sometimes you have to find a way to adjust to a bit of adversity, and the Nittany Lions did that on Saturday in their Week 4 win against Central Michigan.

After jumping out to a 14-0 lead on the visiting Chipewas, Penn State found itself in a tied game in the second quarter and in need of a spark to rejuvenate the momentum. They got it in from one of their freshman running backs and the defense forced four turnovers to help prevent Central Michigan from sniffing any potential for a massive upset in Beaver Stadium.

Here are the grades on this week’s report card from Penn State’s 33-14 victory.

Quarterback

Sep 24, 2022; University Park, Pennsylvania, USA; Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Sean Clifford (14) looks to throw a pass before being tackled by Central Michigan Chippewas defensive linesman Michael Heldman (97) during the second quarter at Beaver Stadium. Penn State defeated Central Michigan 33-14. Mandatory Credit: Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

Grade: B

This was not the finest outing Penn State could have asked for out of [autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag], but it was more than effective enough to solidify a victory. Clifford passed for 217 yards with three touchdowns, and he ran for another, but he did hit a bit of a cold streak in the second quarter after such a solid start to the game. Clifford was lacking some help from his receivers at times, but he could have put a few more passes in better spots as well. He wasn’t sacked though.

Penn State vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

Will Penn State be able to keep its full focus after the blowout win over Auburn?

It’s not like there’s anything big ahead – Northwestern is up next – but it’s been an interesting first three weeks with a gut-check rally to beat Purdue and the high-profile win on the road against the SEC. As we’ve seen with Central Michigan, it can take advantage of any opportunity.

It rallied back to make it interesting late against Oklahoma State, and last week it finally got the ground game working in a blowout over Bucknell.

The Chippewas are fantastic at getting into the backfield, the run defense has been strong, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Penn State Will Win

Central Michigan doesn’t have the passing game bother the Penn State secondary.

The Nittany Lions have allowed yards, but they’ve given up fewer than a 50% completion rate overall so far. Auburn almost hit 300 yards but couldn’t get anything going, and the pass rush is there to bother CMU QB Daniel Richardson enough to keep the attack from going off.

The Chippewas offensive line hasn’t been great so far, the defense isn’t forcing enough mistakes, and the secondary was lit up before the Bucknell game, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Sean Clifford has been better than you think.

Penn State fans might be liking the great young prospects waiting in the wings, but Clifford is playing like a good veteran who’s able to handle the moment and steadily keep everything moving.

The team made a statement against Auburn. Instead of packing it in and getting through this before the Big Ten season kicks in full force, expect a good, balanced performance and a nice day from the defense.

Central Michigan will score points in the second half, but Penn State will have this in hand.

Central Michigan vs Bucknell Game Preview

Why Bucknell Will Win

Central Michigan having problems with Oklahoma State was one thing, but the team couldn’t stop South Alabama in a rough 38-24 home loss.

The Chippewas couldn’t get the O going, the secondary got torched for a second straight game, and now it’s up to the Bison to take advantage of it all.

The Bucknell offensive line has been solid in pass protection, there haven’t been a ton of mistakes, and the defense has been able to keep it close, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Central Michigan Will Win

Bucknell doesn’t score.

It’s not even that the style runs the clock and is deliberate; the offense just doesn’t work.

There’s no push from the O line – even though it’s good in pass protection – and there’s not enough of a passing attack to help the cause.

Central Michigan should be able to put this away with a few good scoring drives early on, but …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This has to be an easy win.

After the problems against South Alabama’s passing game, and after giving up over 1,000 yards of total offense in the first two games, coming up with a good day in all phases is a must with road games at Penn State and Toledo coming up next.

South Alabama vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

Nicholls is pretty good.

The Colonels have a high-powered FCS offense, they’re good at getting into the backfield, and … they got dropkicked by South Alabama in a 48-7 loss.

Everything clicked for the Jaguars with over 500 yards of offense, a dominant performance by the defense, and full control of the game as everything looked great under rising head man Kane Wommack.

Central Michigan couldn’t stop a thing for three quarters when Oklahoma State was trying in the 58-44 Cowboy win. The balance of the USA attack will keep coming, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Central Michigan Will Win

Central Michigan made it fun.

Oklahoma State was up 37-7 late in the third and 51-15 in the fourth, but the Chippewas kept trying.

It was still a 12-point loss, but Daniel Richardson threw for 424 yards and four scores, Lew Nichols ran for two touchdowns, and the offense showed off the firepower to potentially keep up with anyone.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The South Alabama defense should be the real deal.

It was already good, and then the transfer portal took things up a few notches. Can the team continue to get the same offensive production it showed against Nicholls, and can the Central Michigan D hold up when pressed?

It’s a fun matchup between two teams that will battle every week in their respective conferences.

South Alabama will keep up, but Richardson, Nichols, and the Chippewa offense will be a bit more explosive in the second half. It’s not going to be like the fourth quarter in Stillwater, but it’ll be enough.

Oklahoma State vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewas were badly hurt by the vultures in the transfer portal and to the NFL Draft, but they return enough good offensive parts to be dangerous.

Daniel Richardson is a good veteran quarterback who can keep things moving, Lew Nichols led the nation in rushing last season, and the secondary should be one of the best in the MAC as the season goes on.

Central Michigan should once again be strong defensively on third downs, the pass rush will once again be terrific, and the No. 1 team in college football in tackles for loss will generate a push. However …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State’s offense will be balanced and explosive, and the great defense of 2021 isn’t going to skip a beat.

The Cowboys lost their top four tacklers, but new defensive coordinator Dereck Mason should be able to keep it all going thanks to a loaded group of defensive ends that should live in the Central Michigan backfield.

The Chippewa offensive front will be okay – it has the size and options to find the right starting five as the season goes on – but it has to replace NFL blockers Bernhard Raimann and Luke Goedeke on the outside.

Oklahoma State isn’t the team you want to go against if you’re breaking in two new offensive tackles. The defense should be able to control the game with a few key sacks.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan won’t be a pushover, but the balance of the OSU offense – starting with the experience of QB Spencer Sanders and a good running game – should keep pressing through a few big lulls.

Oklahoma State is occasionally slow out of the gate.

It struggled to get by Missouri State in a 23-16 win to kickoff last year, it had to push to beat Tulsa to start 2020, and it famously – and controversially – was shocked by Central Michigan 30-27 in Week 2 of 2016.

It won’t be a perfect performance, but relatively slow and steady will win the race – there will be two explosive plays to pull away. Central Michigan will keep it close for a while, but the Cowboy defense will clamp down in the second half.

MAC Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

MAC preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

One thing is for sure – someone will come out of nowhere and become a player.

Northern Illinois went from worst-to-first last season, and it’ll be another team that screws up all of the predictions and projections this year as it all comes together for …

Akron? That would be the biggest shocker.

Bowling Green? That’s more likely, but still a big stretch.

That’s what makes the MAC so much fun – it’s unpredictable in some ways, but the stars still usually show up.

The problem is the uneven level of the divisions. Unlike other conferences, the MAC won’t go to a no-division format – at least not yet – and in the preseason predictions, the West is far, far stronger than the East.

Those are the breaks in the crazy league, and again, there’s always a team that rises up to make everything more interesting. Here are the 2022 predictions for every MAC game.

Central Michigan Chippewas Preview 2022

This is going well under head coach Jim McElwain.

He might have had a rough landing as he got bounced out from the Florida job, but he got the Gators to two straight SEC Championship games.

In his three years at CMU he and the program won at least a share of two division titles, went to two bowls, and has a solid 20-13 record overall and a 15-7 clip in conference.

No, he and the Chippewas haven’t been able to take that extra step and win the conference title, and that’s going to be a whole lot harder to do this year.

The team is good, the coaching is great, but the success has been a slight problem as teams have poached the program for some of the top talents, especially on defense. Combine that with the NFL losses on the offensive line, and this isn’t going to be easy.

Rebuilding isn’t all that new, though, for Central Michigan and McElwain. The team will still be a player in the MAC race.

Central Michigan Chippewas Preview 2022: Offense

The offense managed to crank up enough to efficiently get the job done. The Chippewas were 24th in the nation in total offense, the running game was good, the passing attack was the second-best in the MAC, and the production was steady over the second half of the season. But …

The offensive line loses some massive parts. The interior is good with decent size and depth, but you don’t get better after losing tackles the caliber of Bernhard Raimann (Indianapolis Colts) and Luke Goedeke (Tampa Bay Buccaneers).

The backfield gets back leading rusher Lew Nichols – he ran for 1,848 yards and 16 touchdowns – and welcomes back Kobe Lewis from a knee injury that cost him last season.

Veteran QB Daniel Richardson isn’t too much of a runner, but he was terrific as he grew into the job as a passer last season, throwing for 2,583 yards and 24 touchdowns with just six picks. Now he needs more options to throw to.

Leading receiver Kalil Pimpleton is off trying to become a Detroit Lion and JaCorey Sullivan is gone, but Dallas Dixon is back after making 45 catches for 701 yards and eight scores. Junior Joel Wilson will once again be one of the MAC’s best pass-catching tight ends.

Central Michigan Chippewas Preview 2022: Defense

The defense got poached, and it’s going to hurt. Star safety Devonni Reed (South Carolina), LB Troy Brown (Ole Miss), and LB George Douglas (SMU) are gone along with leading tackler Greg Kreski and top pass rushers Troy Hairston (Houston Texans) and Amir Saddiq (Charlotte).

The D was the best in the nation at coming up with tackles for loss and was fourth in sacks. It led the MAC against the run, but it was hammered through the air. On the plus side …

The secondary has enough experience to potentially be okay. At the very least, the veteran corners are in place and the safeties have good size – even if they’re a little green. They all need help from the defensive front that has to rotate in new parts. There’s decent size in the interior, and the new ends are hybrids who’ll keep on coming.

The linebacking corps is undergoing the biggest overhaul. Sophomore Kyle Moretti is a 230-pound sophomore who made 48 tackles, sophomore Justin Whiteside got in enough work to be ready, but the developed depth isn’t there.

Notre Dame heading to Bahamas for Thanksgiving weekend tournament

How would you like to spend Thanksgiving with the women’s basketball team?

We don’t know what will happen to Notre Dame this season. What we do know is the team will enjoy Thanksgiving dinner in a tropical paradise. That’s because the Irish are one of six programs to be invited to the 20th edition of the Goombay Splash in Bimini, Bahamas. The tournament begins Nov. 24, this year’s date for Thanksgiving, and ends Nov. 26 with each team getting either two or three games along the way.

The Irish’s first game will be played Thanksgiving against American, a first-time opponent. Arizona State awaits both teams regardless of the result because it plays the loser of the Thanksgiving game the next day and the winner the day after. George Mason and LSU face each other in the Thanksgiving game to determine who will play on which day.

If you have to be away from your family during a major holiday, it’s hard to pick against the Bahamas as a location. Don’t believe me? Let’s go back a few years and watch Central Michigan’s reaction to going to the inaugural Bahamas Bowl, which was held on Christmas Eve:
