247Sports ranks Texas running back room No. 9 in the country

Texas is set to have a strong running game in 2024.

The Texas running back room is set to thrive in 2024. One college football writer has it as one of the 10 best running back rooms in the nation.

247Sports’ Conner Bahns ranks the Texas ball carrying unit No. 9 in the country. He provided the following justification for their high ranking for the upcoming season

“Former No. 1 running back recruit CJ Baxter has superstar potential entering his second year of college football. He took the back seat to Jonathon Brooks last season but still strung together a nice freshman campaign, particularly down the stretch when he contributed touchdowns in some of Texas’ biggest games. His supporting cast at the ballcarrier spot is quite talented, too, with returning depth piece Jaydon Blue set to serve as a second option and incoming four-star prospect Jerrick Gibson offering a potential instant impact.”

Not mentioned were Christian Clark and Tre Wisner who could certainly make an impact for the Texas offense. Albeit, its the trio of Cedric Baxter Jr., Jaydon Blue and Jerrick Gibson that could become the best three-headed monster in college football.

There might not be a Doak Walker Award candidate among them for the 2024 season, although we didn’t view Jonathon Brooks as that before his breakout campaign last year. Even so, the tandem should be one of the more productive groups in the country.

Looking at the running backs Tashard Choice has recruited to Texas

Texas may have one of the best recruiters in the country.

Texas has become the premier destination for the top-ranked running backs in the country. There is one coach in particular that deserves his flowers for playing a large role in the recruiting success.

Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice has been an unsung hero for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail and on Saturday he struck again. When Texas lost Stan Drayton to Temple, it was a huge blow to the program and left some wondering if Steve Sarkisian could find someone that compares.

Well, for the second straight season Choice helped land one of the best running backs and players from the state of Florida, a state that the Longhorns prior to his arrival didn’t have the best luck in.

The Longhorns missed on names like Trey Sanders, Noah Cain, and T.J. Pledger at running back. From the span of 2016-2022 the program had landed just three Floridians. Now, with Choice’s ties to Florida the Longhorns have access to a state that is one of the most talent-rich in the country and have picked up consecutive commitments from top backs in Florida.

Let’s take a look at the major recruits Choice has hauled in for the Longhorns over the last couple years.

Texas a standout for 2024 five-star running back Jerrick Gibson

Jerrick Gibson and Cedric Baxter would be a deadly running back duo.

Texas continues to sit in great position with 2024 five-star running back Jerrick Gibson.

The nation’s top running back prospect recently announced a top five of Florida, Georgia, Miami, Tennessee and Texas. He plans to take summer official visits to each school before committing in July.

It is not often a program can land back-to-back elite running back prospects. Some players do not want to share the backfield with another top talent, but Gibson likes the idea of pairing with former five-star Cedric Baxter at Texas.

“I look at (Texas having Cedric Baxter Jr.) as iron sharpening iron. If I go there, we would be pushing each other to get better. I really don’t look at it as, ‘Oh, he went there, I don’t want to go there anymore because the light’s not going to be on me.’ That’s why I went to IMG. I wanted to get better and compete for a spot instead of having everything given to me.”

The Longhorns are the favorite to land Gibson. On3 Sports’ recruiting prediction machine gives Texas a 92.5% chance to earn his commitment.

Texas teammates discuss RB Bijan Robinson’s NFL draft result

Teammates are fired up for Bijan Robinson.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson is still making an impact on the Forty Acres. That much is evident after watching current Longhorns player discuss his draft designation.

Jordan Whittington seemed the most thrilled for Robinson on the night. He said the following after watching his teammate get picked early in the draft.

“(We were) just super excited. Just seeing your brother who you had blood, sweat and tears with, playing the game with, just seeing his dreams come true. You know, that’s always a good feeling. It just felt like we got drafted.”

The above sentiment speaks to the camaraderie the team shares under head coach Steve Sarkisian after overcoming a rough 2021 campaign. Current Texas running backs were excited to see the big time player hear his name called on the night.

Freshman running back Cedric Baxter voiced excitement for his mentor. Similarly, the likely starting running back for the 2023 squad Jonathon Brooks weighed in on Robinson’s big night.

“Just to know all the work that he’s put in, it’s well deserved,” Brooks shared. “I’ve learned so much from him being behind him for two years … he’s well deserving of what he got.”

Texas players should get to celebrate a handful of more former teammates drafted over the weekend.

Arch Manning, Cedric Baxter and others sign autographs ahead of spring game

The freshman duo of Manning and Baxter are two players Texas fans are eager to see take the field.

Texas quarterback Arch Manning and running back Cedric Baxter were among the Longhorns signing autographs ahead of the Orange-White spring game on Saturday.

The freshman duo of Manning and Baxter are two players Texas fans are eager to see take the field.

Manning is competing well with Quinn Ewers and Maailk Murphy in spring ball. Steve Sarkisian has praised Manning for his work ethic and efforts thus far.

“But what he does have, that I think is somewhere in the Manning DNA, this guy loves football. He works at football. We practice in the morning, that evening he wants to already be up here watching every one of his plays. He works at his craft. He wants to be great. There’s no doubt about it. And I think that’s why he came here.”

Baxter is quickly turning heads in the running back room. The five-star’s talent is catching the eye of his teammates and coaches, so much so he is earning some first-team reps. Baxter is a prime candidate to have an early impact in the Longhorns backfield in 2023.
