UFC 286 results: Jennifer Maia hands Casey O’Neill first career loss in technical showcase

Casey O’Neill entered UFC 286 at 9-0, but was handed her first loss by Jennifer Maia.

[autotag]Jennifer Maia[/autotag] utilized her technical striking Saturday to become the first opponent to defeat previously-surging flyweight contender [autotag]Casey O’Neill[/autotag].

The bout was part of the UFC 286 main card at The O2 in London and saw Maia (21-9-1 MMA, 6-5 UFC) defeat O’Neill (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).

The fight was largely a technical striking match for its duration. While O’Neill found success with her strikes, her combinations were shorter and less in volume than Maia’s. As O’Neill often fired single strikes, Maia would answer with two or three. O’Neill pressed the action, but Maia utilized her footwork to elude the pressuring foe.

Maia’s jab in particular found a home. When O’Neill tried to grapple her in Round 2, Maia reversed position against the fence. In Round 3, O’Neill pursued with an increased level of urgency. She found success with her strikes and range, though Maia bloodied her nose.

In the final minute, the two fighters opened up. Maia shot for a takedown and controlled O’Neill against the fence until the final 10 seconds. O’Neill landed a handful of significant punches in the waning seconds.

With the victory, Maia extends her winning streak to two. In November, Maia defeated Maryna Moroz by unanimous decision. The two-fight streak comes after three losses in the previous four fights, including a UFC 255 title challenge against then-champion Valentina Shevchenko.

O’Neill encounters her first MMA loss at age 25. She spent the months leading up to the fight recovering and readying after an ACL tear in early 2022. Her UFC victories to date include Shana Dobson, Lara Fritzen, Antonina Shevchenko, and Roxanne Modafferi.

The UFC is back in London for the third time in about a year this week with a welterweight trilogy rematch atop the card.

UFC 286 takes place Saturday at The O2 in London. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and early prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, welterweight champion [autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag] (20-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC) takes on former champ [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] (20-2 MMA, 15-1 UFC) in a trilogy title rematch. Usman had little issue with Edwards for nearly 25 minutes when they fought this past August, but Edwards pulled off a stunning late head-kick knockout to take the title.

Usman is a -250 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Edwards is +200. It’s not a shutout, though it is a blowout. Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Usman ahead at 9-2.

[lawrence-related id=2625477,2625475]

In the co-feature, [autotag]Rafael Fiziev[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) takes on former interim lightweight champ [autotag]Justin Gaethje[/autotag] (23-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC). Fiziev is more than a 2-1 favorite, but it’s Gaethje who has the slimmest possible picks lead at 6-5.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Bryan Barberena[/autotag] (18-9 MMA, 9-7 UFC) meets [autotag]Gunnar Nelson[/autotag] (18-5-1 MMA, 9-5 UFC) in a welterweight bout. Nelson is the biggest favorite on the main card at -360, but he has just a 7-4 lead in the picks from our staff members.

[autotag]Jennifer Maia[/autotag] (20-9-1 MMA, 5-5 UFC) takes on the unbeaten [autotag]Casey O’Neill[/autotag] (9-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) in a women’s flyweight bout. O’Neill is a -170 favorite – the smallest favorite on the main card. Yet she is our closest thing to a unanimous pick at 10-1.

And to open the main card, former middleweight title challenger [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] (18-5-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) fights [autotag]Roman Dolidze[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC). Vettori nearly is a 3-1 favorite at the betting window, but he only has a 6-5 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie consensus picks, Usman (59 percent), Fiziev (52 percent), Nelson (62 percent), O’Neill (73 percent) and Vettori (59 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

UFC 286 pre-event facts: Rafael Fiziev’s stats could spell trouble for Justin Gaethje

Check out the numbers behind UFC 286, including Leon Edwards vs. Kamaru Usman 3, Justin Gaethje vs. Rafael Fiziev and more.

The UFC brings a numbered event back to England for the first time since October 2016 on Saturday with UFC 286, which takes place at The 02 in London with a main card that airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and ESPN+.

A highly anticipated trilogy bout for the UFC welterweight title takes center stage in the main event. After avenging a unanimous decision loss to [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] (20-2 MMA, 15-1 UFC) from December 2015 with a shocking head kick knockout at UFC 278 in August, [autotag]Leon Edwards[/autotag] (19-3 MMA, 11-2 UFC) will attempt to make his first title defense in the rubber match on his home soil.

Casey O’Neill: Alexa Grasso’s win over Valentina Shevchenko ‘makes the division more exciting’

Ahead of her return at UFC 286 in London, Casey O’Neill is happy to see movement in the women’s flyweight division.

LONDON – [autotag]Casey O’Neill[/autotag] is happy to see movement in the women’s flyweight division.

Ater [autotag]Alexa Grasso[/autotag] dethroned longtime flyweight champion [autotag]Valentina Shevchenko[/autotag] at UFC 285, the division finally has a new titleholder, which O’Neill (9-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) thinks opens the doors for everyone else.

“I thought it was very exciting,” O’Neill said at Wednesday’s UFC 286 media day. “I’m happy for Alexa. She’s a super nice person and that was a super awesome win, the way that she finished her, and it just makes the division more exciting – more eyes on the division, and the rematch is going to be awesome.

“I think that it’s at that stage now after the growth and development where everyone’s catching up to the champion, and everyone just has to be better, and I think that we all are. I think the best prospects in women’s fighting right now are in 125.”

[lawrence-related id=2624842,2542182,2520736]

O’Neill returns from a layoff of more than a year to face Jennifer Maia (20-9-1 MMA, 5-5 UFC) on Saturday’s UFC 286 main card at The O2 in London. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and early prelims on ESPN+.

O’Neill will be taking on a former title challenger, and sees a win over Maia as a great step toward title contention.

“I asked for this fight. I thought it would be a great fight for me,” O’Neill said. “Before I got injured, I was going to fight Jessica Eye, who was a former title challenger who’d fought for the belt. I thought that was a good next step for me. So Jennifer Maia was a good opponent.”

Undefeated Casey O’Neill vs. former title challenger Jennifer Maia in the works for UFC 286

A key women’s flyweight matchup between Jennifer Maia and Casey O’Neill is in the works for London’s UFC 286.

A ranked women’s flyweight matchup is targeted for UFC 286 in London.

A bout between former title challenger [autotag]Jennifer Maia[/autotag] and undefeated [autotag]Casey O’Neill[/autotag] is being planned for the pay-per-view event on March 18, which takes place at The O2.

MMA Junkie confirmed the fight is in the works with multiple sources following a first report from MMA Island. Details surrounding the matchup are being discussed, but bout agreements have been not signed by both parties at this time.

O’Neill (9-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) who currently holds the No. 9 spot in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie women’s flyweight rankings, will compete for the first time after being forced out of a matchup against Jessica Eye at UFC 276 in July due to a torn ACL. Through four fights in the UFC, the 25-year-old O’Neill has recorded three stoppages over Shana Dobson, Lara Fritzen and Antonina Shevchenko. Her most recent victory was a split decision win over Roxanne Modafferi at UFC 271.

On the other side, Maia (20-9-1 MMA, 5-5 UFC) will look to make it two straight in the win column. In her previous outing, Maia, 34, won a unanimous decision over Maryna Moroz to snap a two-fight skid. The upcoming bout against O’Neill also represents the opportunity to stay above .500 since her title shot against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 255 in 2020.

With the addition, the UFC 286 lineup includes:

  • Roman Dolidze vs. Marvin Vettori
  • Jennifer Maia vs. Casey O’Neill
  • Luana Carolina vs. Joanne Wood
  • Malcolm Gordon vs. Jake Hadley

Casey O’Neill says she tore ACL, out of UFC 276 bout vs. Jessica Eye

One of the brightest rising stars in the UFC will be on the shelf for an extended period of time.

Rising flyweight star [autotag]Casey O’Neill[/autotag] won’t be fighting at UFC 276.

On Thursday, O’Neill (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) announced her withdrawal from her scheduled July 2 bout vs. [autotag]Jessica Eye[/autotag] (15-10 MMA, 5-9 UFC) due to a torn ACL suffered in training.

“Unfortunately I have to announce that I need to withdraw from my upcoming fight on July 2 due to snapping my ACL last week in training,” O’Neill wrote in a post on her social media accounts.

“I’ve spent the past 7 days trying to continue on but it’s just not possible on a fully torn ACL. I will have surgery, recover and be back better than ever before you know it.”

“I’m so sad that I don’t get to perform for you guys, I’m so sad that I don’t get to fight but I am excited to get healthy and rebuild. Thank you to the @ufc @danawhite @mickmaynard2 @heatherlinden @drtera @ufcpi for always taking care of me

“I am 24 years old and young in this game. I promise you I will be back better than before and the King is still coming for her crown. Love you guys, thank you for the support.”

O’Neill’s unblemished professional record includes UFC finishes over Shana Dobson, Lara Procopio, and Antonina Shevchenko. In her most recent bout, O’Neill went to the decision for the first time in her promotional tenure when she defeated Roxanne Modafferi by split decision.

It is unclear if Jessica Eye will receive a replacement, though the bout is still over nine weeks away.

With the change, the UFC 276 lineup includes:

  • Lauren Murphy vs. Miesha Tate
  • Jessica Eye vs. TBA
  • Dricus du Plessis vs. Brad Tavares
  • Jessica-Rose Clark vs. Julija Stoliarenko
  • Uriah Hall vs. Andre Muniz

Jessica Eye vs. Casey O’Neill in the works for UFC 276

Top prospect Casey O’Neill returns at UFC 276 in July against former title challenger Jessica Eye.

One of the best prospects in women’s MMA is taking a step up in competition.

Undefeated [autotag]Casey O’Neill[/autotag] is being targeted to fight former UFC title challenger and long-time contender [autotag]Jessica Eye[/autotag] on July 2 at UFC 276 in Las Vegas.

MMA Junkie verified with multiple people close to the situation that verbal agreements are in place, following an initial report on Friday by ESPN. The people requested anonymity because the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

[lawrence-related id=1212642,549476]

O’Neill (9-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) joined the UFC in February 2021 and since has racked up four consecutive wins, besting notable opposition in Antonina Shevchenko and most recently Roxanne Modafferi. The 24-year-old last fought in mid February when she outpointed Modafferi in a split decision at UFC 271.

Meanwhile, Eye (15-10 MMA, 5-9 UFC) is looking to bounce back from a three-fight losing streak. The former title challenger has suffered unanimous decision losses to Cynthia Calvillo, Joanne Calderwood and Jennifer Maia in her last three bouts. Eye’s most recent win came against Viviane Araujo in December 2019.
