Fab Four: Selecting Tennessee football’s Mount Rushmore of all-time recruits

On the eve of early signing day, Vols Wire recalls the most hyped commits in school history.

As the early signing period quickly approaches, Tennessee football is looking to lock in its 2021 recruiting class. The Tennessee program has been able to sign highly touted prospects over the years.

Along with all of the other College Wire sites, Vols Wire has put together a Mount Rushmore of the greatest recruits in Tennessee football history.

The criteria to make this list fairly simple.

Each player must have signed a national letter of intent out of high school to play for the Vols, and must have taken part in at least one full season at Tennessee.

This is not a list that consists of the greatest players in Tennessee history. It is a list of student-athletes who made the most national headlines when signing to play at the University of Tennessee and who went on to have a productive career for the Vols.

More Mount Rushmores from the College Wire Network:

Bama / Aub / Fla / LSU / Tenn. / UGA // Mich. / Mich St. / Ohio St. / Wisc. // Okla. / Texas // ND // USC

The NCAA has declared that eligibility does not count for the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, allowing for someone like Guarantano to return for an additional redshirt senior season in 2021.

College Football Morning Announcements: June 4, 2020

Johnny Majors gets remembered and we talk Tennessee’s chances in the SEC in 2020 on this College Football Morning Announcement!

Good morning and happy Thursday to each and everyone of you college football fans out there.

I did things a little differently today on the College Football Morning Announcements as Dan Harralson of Vols Wire joined me to remember a college football legend, Johnny Majors, who died Wednesday at the age of 85.

Majors was a two-time SEC player of the year at Tennessee before returning to coach his alma-mater immediately after leading Pitt to a national title in 1976.

Nick and Dan also discuss what keyed Tennessee’s turnaround from 1-4 and SEC laughing stock to 8-5 and winners of six in a row to close 2019.  How close is Tennessee to playing for another SEC Championship?

That gets discussed and some memories from the old Notre Dame/Tennessee series get brought up as the guys hope for that to one day be picked up again.

Tennessee offers 4-star California quarterback Miller Moss

Tennessee offers 4-star California quarterback Miller Moss.

California quarterback Miller Moss is garnering heavy attention as part of the 2021 recruiting class, and he has just received an offer from the alma mater of his head coach at Bishop Alemany High School.

Moss is coached by Casey Clausen, who played quarterback at Tennessee from 2000-03. Clausen is statistically one of the best quarterbacks in Tennessee history, throwing for over 9,700 yards and 75 touchdowns in his four-year career. This puts Clausen No. 2 in Tennessee history in both statistics, behind Peyton Manning.

The Mission Hills native is a 6-foot-2, 197-pound 4-star quarterback on the 247Sports Composite, and rated the No. 5 pro-style quarterback in the country. Moss holds offers from several West Coast schools such as California, UCLA, USC and Oregon. Alabama, Miami, Michigan, Auburn and Georgia are also among the schools with offers on the table.

Moss will play out his senior year at Bishop Alemany as Clausen enters his third season as the head coach in 2020.

While Tennessee’s quarterback room is crowded at the moment, there could be plenty of turnover within the next two seasons with possible transfers and Jarrett Guarantano playing out his final season of eligibility in 2020.
