Carsen Edwards led the Maine Red Claws with 28 points in win on Sunday

The Celtics rookie also added a highlight-reel dunk in the win over the College Park Skyhawks.

Boston Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards scored 28 points on Sunday in a G League assignment to lead the Maine Red Claws to a 108-107 win over the College Park Skyhawks.

The second-round pick finished by shooting 10-of-19 from the field, including 4-of-11 from 3-point range, in 37 minutes of work. Edwards took the place of Tremont Waters, who is with the Celtics, as the lead guard on Sunday and he also added seven rebounds and four assists.

Edwards has played the past four games with the Red Claws on assignment after playing sparingly with the Celtics as of late. Edwards has responded by turning in back-to-back games with at least 28 points after scoring 33 on Friday against the Long Island Nets.

In addition to Edwards, Tacko Fall also suited up for the Red Claws on Sunday. The 7-foot-5 center finished with nine points, seven rebounds and one block after battling through foul trouble for much of the contest.

After his performance on Sunday, Edwards is now averaging 21.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and two steals in 10 games with the Red Claws. He is 10th in the G League in scoring and 14th in steals.

Carsen Edwards goes for 23 on 8-of-16 shooting with Maine Red Claws

Boston Celtics rookie guard Carsen Edwards looks to have found his shot again after scoring 23 on an efficient 8-of-16 from the floor with the Maine Red Claws vs. the College Park Skyhawks.

Boston Celtics rookie point guard Carsen Edwards continued to turn around his early-season funk with the maine Red Claws Sunday.

Playing with Boston’s G League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws, the Purdue product logged 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting, looking more like the sharpshooting energy scorer the Celtics drafted than he has since Boston’s preseason.

Edwards got a little extra run with two way guard Tremont Waters up with the parent club to help cover for starting Celtics floor general Kemba Walker missing time due to a sore knee, and the Houston native got a chance to try out his own chops as a one as a result.

Evidently it suited him.

Two way teammate Tacko Fall only played 15 minutes due to foul trouble,  but managed to record 9 points, 7 rebounds and a block over the stretch.

The Red Claws came away with a 108-107 win over the College Park Skyhawks (the G League affiliate of the Washington Wizards), their eighth victory in nine games.

Carsen Edwards goes for 33, Tacko Fall double-doubles for Red Claws

Rookie guard Carsen Edwards broke out of a slump Friday, leading all scorers with 33 points vs. the Long Island Nets Friday while teammate Tacko Fall had yet another double-double.

The trio of Boston Celtics players driving much of the Maine Red Claws’ success this season may not have come away with the win Friday, but there were still promising signs to be had.

The Claws dropped a game to the Long Island Nets (the G League affiliate of the eponymous Brooklyn club) 111-102 on the road, but Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards seems to have shook the funk following his game since the beginning of a season now half over.

Shooting 11-of-27 and 4-of-9 from deep, the Purdue product put up 33 points, pulled down 7 boards and had 3 steals, a major step forward for a player Boston likely anticipates being able to provide some depth scoring by season’s end.

It wasn’t enough to come away with the win, but his fellow Celtic teammates also put up solid numbers in the loss.

Fan favorite Tacko Fall logged yet another double-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks, while two way floor general Tremont Waters recorded 10 points, 6 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals.

While the comparatively down night for Waters didn’t help Boston’s G League affiliate come away with the win, it’s probably unreasonable to expect him to dominate every night.

Feeding the hot hand of Edwards was the right move, as it was late defensive lapses that ultimately cost Maine the win and getting the former Boilermaker back on track bodes well, assuming it sticks.

Carsen Edwards had his fourth 20-point game in the G League on Friday

The second-round pick tallied 21 points on assignment with the Maine Red Claws on Friday night in a win over the Agua Caliente Clippers.

Boston Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards recorded 21 points on assignment Friday night in the G League with the Maine Red Claws during a 112-109 win over the Agua Caliente Clippers.

Edwards finished by shooting 8-of-23 from the field in 36 minutes of work, including 3-of-10 from 3-point range, for his fourth 20-point game in the G League. The second-round pick also added five rebounds and three assists.

After the Celtics called up two-way rookie Tremont Waters, Edwards earned the start at point guard. Although he wasn’t very efficient in the contest, converting on just 34.7% from the field, the rookie scored from all over the court from finishing at the rim to hitting the mid-range shot.

With playing time at a premium on the Celtics, Edwards has been showing out in the G League. In six games with the Red Claws, Edwards is averaging 21.8 points, five rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 steals. Edwards could re-join the Celtics with the Red Claws off until Thursday.

Celtics two-way rookie Tacko Fall also helped lead the way for the Red Claws. The 7-foot-5 center finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and six blocks for his second game of the season with six blocks.

Celtics G League Watch: How Edwards, Waters and Fall played on Tuesday

With a trio of first-year players leading the way, the Red Claws picked up the win over the Blue Coats in a New Year’s Eve matinee special.

With a trio of first-year players leading the way, the Maine Red Claws picked up a 126-114 win over the Delaware Blue Coats in a New Year’s Eve matinee special on Tuesday.

Boston Celtics second-round pick Carsen Edwards scored 23 points, five rebounds and three assists in his fifth G League assignment after joining the Red Claws on Monday. Edwards shot 10-of-21 from the field, including 2-of-8 from 3-point range.

Edwards previously played four games in the G League earlier this month for the Red Claws before he re-joined the Celtics on Dec. 22. Edwards averaged 21.8 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals during that stint, including a season-high 28 points on Dec. 15.

Tremont Waters recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 18 points, 11 assists and four rebounds for the Red Claws. The two-way rookie knocked down a 3-pointer with just over a minute to go to seal the victory.

Tacko Fall continued his dominant play as of late by tallying 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks off of the bench. The outing was good for his third-straight double-double and his seventh of the season, which is tied for 10th most in the G League.

The three players have each seen limited time this season in the NBA with the Celtics but they have performed well when called upon in the G League.

Next up for the Red Claws: A home game on Friday vs. the Agua Caliente Clippers.

Celtics assign rookie Carsen Edwards back to the G League

Edwards previously played four games in the G League earlier this month, averaging 21.8 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals.

After playing sparingly as of late, the Boston Celtics have assigned rookie guard Carsen Edwards to the Maine Red Claws in the G League, the team announced on Monday morning.

Edwards previously played four games in the G League earlier this month for the Red Claws before he re-joined the Celtics on Dec. 22. Edwards averaged 21.8 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals for the Red Claws, including a season-high 28 points on Dec. 15.

Since re-joining the Celtics, Edwards has logged just 10 minutes over the past three games, playing mostly in mop-up duty. With the Red Claws set to play on Tuesday, the Celtics likely wanted Edwards to continue to get work in to stay sharp.

With the Celtics boasting a crowded backcourt, playing time for Edwards has been sporadic this season and with Marcus Smart back after an eye infection, the Celtics likely won’t need Edwards Tuesday against the Charlotte Hornets.

Edwards is averaging 3.4 points in 24 appearances with the Celtics.

NBA on Christmas: A rookie primer on those set to make holiday debut

Although Zion Williamson will be sidelined due to injury, plenty of other rookie players should see some action on Christmas Day.

The 72nd edition of the NBA on Christmas Day will feature five games throughout the day with the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors getting things started at 12 p.m. ET.

The NBA will have five Christmas Day games for the 12th year in a row as ESPN and ABC will combine to broadcast each game. Four of the five games will be first-time matchups on the holiday.

The full five-game Christmas Day schedule:

  • Boston Celtics at Toronto Raptors: 12 p.m. ET (ESPN)
  • Milwaukee Bucks at Philadelphia 76ers: 2:30 p.m. ET (ABC)
  • Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors: 5 p.m. (ABC)
  • L.A. Clippers at L.A. Lakers: 8 p.m. (ABC & ESPN)
  • New Orleans Pelicans at Denver Nuggets: 10:30 p.m. (ESPN)

While the full slate of games will be headlined by the likes of LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, James Harden, Russell Westbrook and others, several first-year players will also make their holiday debuts.

Of course, the last game of the day will be without Zion Williamson as he recovers from knee surgery on Oct. 21. Although the No. 1 pick will be sidelined, plenty of other rookie players should see some action on Christmas Day.

Note: Injured players were not included

Grant Williams, Celtics

(Photo by Rick Scuteri/USA TODAY Sports)

Williams is coming off of his best two-game swing of the season after totaling 30 points. The first-round pick often contributes his energy and playmaking off the bench and is beginning to see more playing time as a result.

Romeo Langford, Celtics

(Photo by Jerome Miron/USA TODAY Sports)

Langford is finally healthy and contributing for the Celtics. After dealing with a number of injuries, Langford recorded a season-high eight points and four rebounds Sunday night in a 119-93 win over the Charlotte Hornets. He appears to be ready to contribute and could see more action on Wednesday.

Edwards recently re-joined the Celtics after a four-game stint with the Maine Red Claws in the G League. Edwards averaged 21.8 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and three steals for the Red Claws. He appears to be back with the Celtics for now though it is unclear if he will play on Wednesday.

Tremont Waters, Celtics

(Photo by Bob DeChiara/USA TODAY Sports)

Waters has spent the majority of the season in the G League. In 13 games played, he is averaging 20.1 points, 7.5 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals. He is 12th in the G League in assists and 12th in steals. With the Red Claws off until Friday, Waters will likely be with the Celtics.

Tacko Fall, Celtics

(Photo by David Butler II/USA TODAY Sports)

With the Celtics dealing with injuries to centers Robert Williams and Vincent Poirier, Fall has been on the active roster recently. Fall has three appearances with the Celtics this season, totaling 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Terence Davis, Raptors

(Photo by Tim Fuller/USA TODAY Sports)

The undrafted guard has earned significant playing time for head coach Nick Nurse and he has taken advantage of it. Davis is averaging 6.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in 30 games this season, including a career-high 19 points against the Orlando Magic on Nov. 20.

Chris Clemons, Rockets

(Photo by Troy Taormina/USA TODAY Sports)

The two-way rookie has contributed sporadically for the Rockets this season. Clemons has scored at least 15 points four different times and has given the Rockets a boost of offense off of the bench. His play has him on the verge of earning a standard NBA deal.

Eric Paschall, Warriors

(Photo by Jasen Vinlove/USA TODAY Sports)

After a strong start to his rookie campaign, Paschall has dealt with a few injuries recently. He has been dealing with a sore hip and suffered a knee injury, causing him to leave early on Friday against the Pelicans. Paschall played on Monday, a good indication he should be able to go on Wednesday.

Jordan Poole, Warriors

With the Warriors battling through injuries for much of the season, Poole has been used quite frequently. His playing time has dropped recently, though, after struggling with his shot. In 29 games, Poole is averaging 7.1 points and shooting just 25.4% from the field.

Ky Bowman, Warriors

(Photo by Noah Graham/NBAE via Getty Images)

The Warriors have leaned quite a bit on two-way guard Ky Bowman so it is unclear if he will play but he has produced when called upon. Bowman is posting 8.3 points and 2.7 assists in 27 games this season and recently recorded two points in 22 minutes on Monday.

Mfiondu Kabengele, Clippers

(Photo by Adam Pantozzi/NBAE via Getty Images)

The first-round has shuttled between the NBA and G League this season, playing only mostly in mop-up duty with the Varsity squad. In the G League, though, Kabengele has been a monster after dropping 36 points and 12 rebounds on Dec. 12.

Terance Mann, Clippers

Like Kabengele, Mann has been used periodically for the Clippers though has started five games for head coach Doc Rivers. Mann hasn’t played in five games so, like Kabengele, may not see much time on Christmas Day.

Jaxson Hayes, Pelicans

(Photo by Layne Murdoch Jr./NBAE via Getty Images)

Without Zion Williamson, Hayes has been top rookie on the Pelicans. In 28 games, Hayes is averaging 8.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. Hayes recently scored in double figures in five of seven games but has cooled off since then, totaling just 12 points over his last three games.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Pelicans

(Photo by Logan Riely/NBAE via Getty Images)

Alexander-Walker has had a few spurts this season in which he has flashed his potential but has struggled to stay consistent with inconsistent playing time. He recently fell out of the rotation and may not see a ton of time on Wednesday.

Michael Porter Jr., Nuggets

(Photo by Bart Young/NBAE via Getty Images)

The Nuggets have been trying to find more playing time for their redshirt freshman but have been unsuccessful in doing so. The team has been rumored to be shopping Malik Beasley, which would open the door for Porter, but the team has not yet moved him.

Rookie guard Carsen Edwards recalled from Red Claws vs Hornets

Assigned to the Maine Red Claws to work on his shooting, Boston rookie sharpshooter Carsen Edwards has been recalled to play vs the Charlotte Hornets Sunday.

The Boston Celtics have recalled rookie sharpshooter Carsen Edwards from the Maine Red Claws.

Edwards is probable to play in Sunday’s matchup with the Charlotte Hornets despite a right quad contusion, reports NBC Sports’ Chris Forsberg.

The rookie had been assigned to the Maine Red Claws with the hopes that the additional minutes would be able to help the former Boilermaker find his shot.

While Edwards may not have shook off his funk, he still managed to get some reps that should speed the young guard towards finding the bottom of the net soon.

Sent to the Claws to play with the Portland outfit in the Las Vegas G League Winter Showcase, it looked like the Purdue product was beginning to shake off the rust in Sin City.

Edwards and two-way teammate Tremont Waters combined to drop 50 points on the Canton Charge on Thursday in a 118-113 win that saw the Purdue product shoot 10-of-20 from the floor (though just 1-of-8 from deep).

The rookie’s shooting woes came back with gusto, however, in a 128-125 victory over the Delaware Blue Coats on Saturday, Edwards going 8-of-21 overall and 3-of-13 from deep despite scoring 19 points in the win.

Say what you will, Edwards at least trusts his shot — more than can be said about many a rookie in the midst of an unexpected shooting slump.

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens expected Edwards to return in January to play with the parent club, but the change of plans for the first-year guard was announced Sunday afternoon by the team.

With one of the worst defenses in the league, the Hornets should be a solid opportunity for Edwards to try and get his shot wet again against a quality opponent.

The Atascocita native may well stay with the team to play the Toronto Raptors on Christmas Day before returning to the Claws to close out the year, with the G League outfit not playing again until Dec. 27th in Washington, D.C.

Carsen Edwards tallied 19 points for the Red Claws on Saturday

The second-round pick logged his fourth game with the Maine Red Claws in the G League on Saturday.

Boston Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards recorded 19 points for the Maine Red Claws on Saturday during the NBA G League Winter Showcase in Las Vegas.

Edwards hauled in seven rebounds and dished out two assists during the 128-125 win over the Delaware Blue Coats, as he shot 8-of-21 from the field, including 3-of-13 from 3-point range.

The second-round pick scored 23 points for the Red Claws on Thursday as he and rookie teammate Tremont Waters combined for 50 points on the first day of the Winter Showcase.

The Celtics assigned Edwards to the Red Claws on Dec. 12 to get additional playing time as he was used sparingly leading up to that point. On Friday, Celtics head coach Brad Stevens indicated Edwards will re-join the team by January.

Overall, Edwards turned in another solid performance on Saturday though he did struggle with his shot once again from 3-point range. He is shooting just 26.3% (10-of-38) from beyond the arc during his time with the Red Claws.

After playing on Saturday, the Red Claws are off until Friday as the G League Winter Showcase wraps up on Sunday. With the team off for a few days, the Celtics may opt to recall Edwards from the G League.

The Celtics play next on Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets.

Brad Stevens detailed when Carsen Edwards will re-join the Celtics

Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards has spent over a week playing with the Maine Red Claws in the G League but will soon re-join his NBA club.

Boston Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards has spent just over a week playing with the Maine Red Claws in the G League but will soon re-join his NBA club.

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens told reporters on Friday that the second-round pick will play with the Red Claws through the end of the NBA G League Winter Showcase that began on Thursday in Las Vegas.

The G League Winter Showcase includes all 28 G League teams in a four-day tournament in front of NBA executives, scouts and coaches at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

On Thursday, Edwards tallied 23 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field and added eight rebounds, four assists and four steals in a loss to the Canton Charge.

The appearance marked his third of the season with the Red Claws as he is averaging 22.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, four assists and 3.7 steals per game. He scored a G League-high 28 points on Sunday.

As injuries begin to pile up, Stevens stated that he would like all of his healthy players to be with the team starting in January. The Red Claws return to action on Saturday to close out their trip to Las Vegas.
