Waters, Edwards lead Red Claws with 50 in the G League Winter Showcase

Tremont Waters and Carsen Edwards combined to score 50 points on Thursday with the Maine Red Claws in the NBA G League Winter Showcase.

Boston Celtics rookies Tremont Waters and Carsen Edwards combined to score 50 points on Thursday for the Maine Red Claws in the NBA G League Winter Showcase in Las Vegas.

Waters led the Red Claws with 27 points, while he added nine assists, five steals and two rebounds in 36 minutes of work. The second-round pick finished by shooting 11-of-20 from the field in the 118-113 loss to the Canton Charge.

Edwards finished the game with 23 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field and added eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. The sharpshooter struggled to connect from deep, converting on just 1-of-8 from beyond the arc in his third game with the Red Claws.

The G League Winter Showcase includes all 28 G League teams in a four-day tournament in front of NBA executives, scouts and coaches. The top four teams from the regular season — Memphis Hustle, Wisconsin Herd, Salt Lake City Stars and the Grand Rapids Drive — will compete for $100,000 in a championship bracket.

Waters and Edwards have formed a dynamic duo for the Red Claws in the G League in such a short time. The two also combined to score 56 points in a win on Sunday over the Drive. They ultimately didn’t earn the win on Thursday but the two have played very well together in the G League.

Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters combine for 56 points for the Red Claws

Two way guard Tremont Waters and sharpshooting Carsen Edwards torched the Grand Rapid Drive for 56 points combined.

With the highs come the lows, and for the four players playing for the Maine Red Claws on a Boston Celtics contract, there was a little of both on Sunday.

First, the bad news — if you can call the normal off-days of young prospects “bad news”.

In a 108-103 win over the Detroit Pistons’ G League team (the Grand Rapids Drive) fan favorite two way center Tacko Fall had his lowest-scoring game of the season with the Claws, as did Celtics lottery pick Romeo Langford.

Not to worry, though, as most young prospects lay eggs from time to time, and the pair are both recently returned from injuries to their lower extremities, so it could take time for both to get their sea legs back.

Langford logged precisely zero points, his shooting touch evidently back in Boston while he went 0-for-5 from the floor.

But he did help out his teammates with 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks over 19 minutes, a good sign for a young player to be aware of and engaged in the little things that can help a team win even if you’re ice cold on the night.

Fall scored 6 points and 4 rebounds with his own pair of blocks, shooting an inefficient 2-of-5 from the floor.

The Senegalese center still managed to make life difficult in the lane for opponents during his 21 minutes of gametime, per WEEI’s Nick Friar.

Now, the good news.

Boston’s future backcourt lit up the Drive for 56 points combined, with two way floor general Tremont Waters dropping 28 points and five boards on the Drive.

At the same time, rookie sharpshooter Carsen Edwards hit Grand Rapids with 28 points of his own, hitting 50 % from deep and inside the arc, going 9-for-18 on the night.

The Purdue product joins Langford in getting some reps with the Red Claws while the parent club is resting, as the latter has had struggles hitting with the Celtics.

The former is just getting back to healthy after a season mostly spent recovering from a litany of minor injuries.

Claws forward Kaiser Gates also deserves a mention for his 21 points and 10 boards, which helped secure the win for the 9-4 Red Claws, currently in second place in the league’s East standings.

The Red Claws next face the Canton Charge in Las Vegas ahead of the G League showcase, after which Celtic’s favorite 7-foot-5 center will make the trip back to Boston to conduct the Pops.

Langford may rejoin the team ahead of their Dec. 18 meeting with the Dallas Mavericks if needed, but will likely continue training with the Red Claws for some time to get the reps he needs for development.

No word on Edwards’ plans with either team, but he may rejoin the Celtics as well vs. the Mavs.

Waters will almost certainly remain with Portland for the near-term barring injury on the parent club.

Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters combine for 56 points in the G League

Celtics rookies Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters led the Maine Red Claws to victory in the G League on Sunday.

Boston Celtics rookies Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters combined to score 56 points on Sunday for the Maine Red Claws in a 108-103 victory over the Grand Rapids Drive.

Edwards tallied 28 points, six steals, five assists and three rebounds as he finished by shooting 9-of-18 from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

The Celtics assigned Edwards to the Red Claws on Thursday after receiving little playing time. Edwards made his G League debut on Friday, recording 17 points in a win over the Iowa Wolves.

Meanwhile, Waters also scored 28 points in the win while he added five rebounds, four assists, three steals. The second-round pick shot 6-of-11 from the field and went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Of course, the Celtics have quite a few first-year players within their organization that played with Maine on Sunday:

  • Tacko Fall: The 7-foot-5 center with six points, four rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes off of the bench. The game marked his second appearance back after missing five games due to a bone bruise on his right knee.
  • Romeo Langford: Langford went scoreless in 19 minutes of action as he missed all five shot attempts while he added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

With several contributors on the Celtics, the team hasn’t quite had enough minutes for their crop of rookies. The G League has provided the young guys an opportunity to stay sharp and develop on the court and the team certainly has to feel confident with how they’ve played thus far.

Next up for Maine: A road matchup on Thursday vs. the Canton Charge.

Celtics assign Langford, Edwards to Maine Red Claws of the G League

Rookie players Romeo Langford and Carsen Edwards will join the Maine Red Claws on assignment in the G League.

The Boston Celtics have assigned rookies Romeo Langford and Carsen Edwards to the Maine Red Claws of the G League, the team announced Thursday morning.

Langford, the 14th overall pick, has not appeared in a game since Dec. 1 when he re-injured his right ankle on assignment with the Red Claws. He logged 18 minutes in that game before exiting in the fourth quarter after rolling it.

Langford has been with the Celtics rehabbing since suffering the injury and recently began to practice with the team. He was activated on Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers but did not play as he made his return to his home state.

The former Indiana guard has dealt with his fair share of injuries this year. He did not play in Summer League after recovering from offseason thumb surgery and he also suffered a knee sprain and a groin injury to go along with his sprained ankle.

Langford has three appearances in the G League this season but left one of those games after just seven minutes when he initially rolled his right ankle. He recorded 27 points in his G League debut on Nov. 9.

Meanwhile, the stint in the G League for Edwards will be his second of the season after practicing with the Red Claws last month. The second-round pick has not seen much playing time with the Celtics as of late and the team likely wants him to get some work in as the Red Claws play on Friday night.

In 21 games, Edwards is averaging 3.9 points and 1.7 rebounds for the Celtics. His best performance came on Nov. 13 when he recorded a career-high 18 points in 20 minutes of work.

Carsen Edwards took over late to help the Celtics to a win vs. Wizards

The Celtics rookie got hot in the fourth quarter, scoring a career-high, to help the Celtics hold off the Wizards on Wednesday night.

Carson Edwards recorded a career-high 18 points, including 10 points alone in the fourth quarter, to help lead the Boston Celtics to a 140-133 win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Edwards finished the game by shooting an efficient 7-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. His four triples marked a career-high this season, topping the three he hit on Nov. 5 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

With the Celtics up by just six points entering the fourth quarter, Edwards went 4-of-7 from the field in the final period, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, to hold off the Wizards. His 10 fourth-quarter points were a team-high.

Prior to his breakout game on Wednesday, Edwards had logged just eight total minutes in his previous two games and the second-round pick even recently participated in a portion of practice with the Maine Red Claws.

Edwards is a nice option for Celtics head coach Brad Stevens off of the bench and has proven to be able to get hot quickly. Though he may not see consistent playing time this season, Edwards can be used as a nice, change-of-pace guy in certain situations.

The Celtics play next on Friday on the road against the Golden State Warriors.

Balanced attack vs. Wizards leads to Celtics’ ninth straight win

The Boston Celtics are now 9-1 after defeating the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.

The Boston Celtics shared the ball, took advantage of turnovers, were efficient and looked like the team to beat in the East on their way to their 10th consecutive victory, defeating the Washington Wizards 140-133 and overcoming a 44-point effort from star guard Bradley Beal.

Jayson Tatum took over in the first quarter, Carsen Edwards played well in the second quarter, Jaylen Brown dominated in the second half and Kemba Walker made his impact felt offensively throughout the game as the quarter combined to score 88 points, with each of Tatum, Brown and Walker breaking the 20-point  mark.

Staying true to the players they’ve been this season, Tatum focused on scoring outside the lane while Brown attacked the rim and Walker let loose from outside. In fact, Walker knocked down 6-12 threes on Wednesday after entering the game shooting a career-high 43.7% from three, his efficiency from outside only matched by Edwards (4-5 from three) and Marcus Smart (4-8 from three) on the Celtics’ side.

Edwards’ career-high 18 points was nice to see, as he went scoreless last game and entered the contest averaging just 4.0 points per game. For a player who torched opponents to the tune of 24.3 points per game at Purdue in his third and final season before averaging 15.3 points per game in the preseason, his performance through the season has been underwhelming.

However, Edwards played light a bolt of lightning against Washington, racing down the court and making play after play.

The Celtics were unable to bottle up Beal, rookie forward Rui Hachimura (21 points on 9-12 shooting) or even Isaiah Thomas (18 points on 7-14), the latter of which who hit a three before the half to cut Boston’s lead down to two.

A game that plenty of runs, the game wasn’t out of reach for the Wizards until the final seconds, with Walker hitting a clutch three to put the Celtics up 140-133.

Celtics assign rookies to Red Claws for practice

The Boston Celtics assigned the majority of their rookies to the Maine Red Claws on practice on Tuesday.

[jwplayer 3HtLuIdB-z6KDnl0B]

Per the Boston Celtics, the team assigned rookies Grant Williams, Vincent Poirier, Carsen Edwards and Romeo Langford “for various portions of the [Maine] Red Claws practice” on Tuesday at the Auerbach Center, where the Celtics normally hold their team practice.

Though the Red Claws are based in Portland, ME., their next game isn’t until Nov. 16 against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in Indiana, which could provide the reason that Boston’s G League affiliate was able to travel to the Celtics’ practice facility on Tuesday.

However, that Boston felt the need to have their rookies — sans guard Javonte Green — practice on a day that practice wasn’t held for the Celtics shows that Boston believes their neophytes need work.

While Langford has yet to play significant minutes in any game, the teaching is experience for he and Edwards in particular is necessary, as Langford is not only the youngest and most inexperienced player on the team but has been unable to fully perform physically for large portions of the team’s offseason, preseason and now regular season.

Despite delivering a scintillating debut with the Red Claws at the same time that veteran forward Gordon Hayward went out with a fractured hand, Boston opted to play Green in the rotation over a player that was the 14th overall pick in the most recent draft.

That’s likely because Green has not only produced well in the minutes he’s played but because he’s more experienced after having spent four seasons at the college level and four seasons playing internationally.

Edwards is a shoot-first player and Celtics head coach Brad Stevens seems to see the Purdue product as more of an off-ball player because of it, playing Edwards with point guard Brad Wanamaker for 40 minutes — the third-most of any two-man lineup he’s been in, per Basketball Reference — this season. Whether it’s to make Edwards less reliant on playing with another lead guard or to make him more comfortable playing off-ball, additional practice would be beneficial.

Especially as he’s only averaging 4.0 points per game on 31.3% shooting from the field and 25.0% shooting from three after averaging 15.3 points per game on 51.2% percent shooting from the field and 45.2% from three.

Williams, though a high IQ player has also struggled from the field, averaging just 2.8 points per game on 26.7% shooting from the field and going 0-13 from behind the arc to start the season.

Averaging a combined 26.6 minutes per game, their offensive woes are a primary reason the Celtics remain 30th in the league in bench scoring, per NBA Advanced Stats.

Boston recalled each of those players after practice but Langford may be headed back to Maine at the end of the week, when the Red Claws face the Mad Ants and the Raptors 905 in back-to-back days.
