NFL free agency: Jags bring back WR Terry Godwin

The Jags have re-signed a member from their 2019 practice squad in receiver Terry Godwin.

After spending 2019 on their practice squad, receiver Terry Godwin will be returning to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team announced that they re-signed the young receiver who will be entering his second season in 2019.

Godwin, 23, was a seventh-round selection of the Carolina Panthers during the 2019 NFL Draft. He was added to the Jags’ practice squad during Week 2 of the regular season and remained on the unit until Dec. 19 when he was placed on the team’s practice squad reserve/injured list.

Godwin attended the University of Georgia while in college and was one of the team’s top contributors in his last seasons. He ended his career with the Bulldogs with 134 receptions for 1,800 career yards and 11 touchdowns.

Robby Anderson rips Boomer Esaison’s report on Jets’ contract offer

Former Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson took to Twitter on Thursday to refute the report that New York offered him a four-year contract.

Former Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson is not a fan happy with a report that surfaced following his exit to Carolina.

Hours after Anderson signed with the Panthers on a two-year, $20 million deal on Tuesday, WFAN radio host Boomer Esiason reported that the Jets offered Anderson a four-year contract worth $40 million before he came to terms with Carolina.

“Robby wanted to take less years and wanted to bet on himself and obviously wanted to go play for a coach that he knows, cause the coach obviously down in Carolina was his coach at Temple, and he feels comfortable with that offense that they’re building around Joe Brady, their offensive coordinator down there,” Esiason said on Boomer and Gio in the morning on Wednesday. “So Robby decided to leave and essentially bet on himself cause he wants to be back at the free agent table in two years, and I don’t blame him.

“I don’t know if the Jets would’ve offered him the two-year deal. That I don’t know. But I do know that, according to my sources, that there was a four-year, $40 million deal on the table for Robby Anderson.”

Twenty-four hours after Esiason’s report, Anderson took to social media to refute it.

“False news,” Anderson said in a tweet that has since been deleted. “Y’all need to better jobs reporting and putting out fake news too ppl.”

It is unknown if the Jets ever made an offer to Anderson before he signed with the Panthers. However, it looks like the four-year deal that Esiason reported was never actually on the table.

After it seemed like a foregone conclusion Anderson would depart in free agency with his comments following the Jets’ 2019 season finale, the Temple product indicated that he wanted to return to the team a week before free agency kicked off. The two sides failed to come to terms on a deal, leading Anderson to reunite with his former college coach, Matt Rhule, in Carolina.

New York acted swiftly to replace Anderson, inking Breshad Perriman to a one-year deal worth $8 million in total value and $6 million in guaranteed money.

Panthers WR Robby Anderson gains perspective from coronavirus situation

On Twitter, wide receiver Robby Anderson said he prays and hopes this situation is resolved soon.

Life is a lot different right now than it was only a few weeks ago. That’s true for NFL players as well as most of the country, which is now the epicenter of the coronavirus.

We saw a sign of the times yesterday when Panthers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater did a virtual press conference session with the media via Zoom. Bridgewater says he’s passing the time by training on the stairs and getting to know his new teammates by playing with them in Madden.

Another recent free agent pickup is also feeling how much things have changed. On Twitter, wide receiver Robby Anderson said he prays and hopes this situation is resolved soon and it makes us appreciate the things we take for granted, himself included.

Well said.

Another way to pass the time? Social media surveys. A few days ago, Stefon Diggs (now with the Bills) asked people for their top five wide receivers of all time. Anderson replied with Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, Ochocinco, Steve Smith and Antonio Brown.

Good list – but in our opinion Terrell Owens needs to included.

In any case, Anderson joins what now looks like one of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the NFL.

Panthers re-sign former Alabama WR DeAndrew White

DeAndrew White will stick around with the Carolina Panthers after re-signing with the team in free agency.

Former Alabama wide receiver DeAndrew White has re-signed with the Carolina Panthers after spending the 2019 season with the team.

Prior to signing with the Panthers in 2019, White spent time with the Houston Texans in 2017, New England Patriots in 2016 and the San Francisco 49ers, who originally signed the Alabama receiver following his time in Tuscaloosa, in 2015.

The official Twitter account for Carolina announced the news on Wednesday:

During his four-year career at Alabama from 2011-14, White hauled in 94 catches for 1,294 yards and 12 touchdowns as he worked as the Crimson Tide’s No. 2 receiver behind Amari Cooper.

Of those numbers, 72 of the receptions, 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns came during his last two seasons.

White’s NFL career hasn’t yielded the same level of success, as his seven total receptions aren’t anything overly impressive, but he’s still considered a valuable depth player who has seen time on practice squads and active rosters for multiple franchises.

Steelers signing OLB Christian Kuntz

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed their fourth XFL player to add depth to their roster

Mark Kaboly of The Athletic Pittsburgh reported that the Steelers are signing outside linebacker Christian Kuntz. Most recently, he was a long snapper for the XFL Dallas Renegades.

Kuntz was part of the Steelers in the 2019 offseason and provided depth at OLB. He made five tackles and a sack in the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers.

An LB at Duquesne University, Kuntz earned All-America honors three times. He added long snapper to his resume after graduating from Duquesne.

Kuntz entered the NFL in 2017 as a free agent with the New England Patriots. He also spent time with the Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The signing of Kuntz marks the fourth XFL player the Steelers have added. On Wednesday, Pittsburgh signed safety Tyree Kinnel, offensive tackle Jarron Jones, and defensive tackle Cavon Walker.

Teddy Bridgewater: Playing ‘Madden’ helps him get a better feel for Panthers

While the team still has a lot of roster holes to fill, Bridgewater won’t be able to complain about having a lack of weapons.

New Panthers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater just wrapped up a video conference call with several members of the media. Bridgewater shared some interesting things about what he’s been up to since signing with his new team and how he’s been passing the time while practicing social distancing.

Obviously, behaving responsibly during coronavirus has made it difficult for Bridgewater to get more familiar his teammates. So, he’s making do by playing with them in Madden. No, seriously. According to Jourdan Rodrigue at the Athletic, Bridgewater says playing the game has helped him get a better feel for some of the guys on the roster.

Good stuff.

While Carolina still has a lot of roster holes to fill, Bridgewater won’t be able to complain about a lack of weapons.

To recap, he’ll have the best pass-catching running back in the NFL in Christian McCaffrey (assuming he doesn’t get traded). He has a young, promising tight end with Ian Thomas. Bridgewater will also benefit from a loaded wide receiver corps that now includes Robby Anderson, Keith Kirkwood, Seth Roberts and Pharoh Cooper in addition to D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel.

Best of all, Bridgewater gets to play for an innovative offensive coordinator who he has previous experience with. Aside from pass protection, the relationship between him and Joe Brady may be the most important factor in determining how well Carolina’s offense does this year.

Redskins have best odds for Cam Newton to start for Week 1

Who will Newton wind up playing for next season?

Cam Newton was released by the Panthers on Tuesday. He passed a physical the day before, so we now know that his throwing shoulder and foot should be fine for the 2020 season. It’s only a matter of time before a team decides to roll the dice and sign him.

Who will Newton wind up playing for next season? According to Odds Shark, the Redskins have the best odds, followed by the Broncos and the Patriots. Here’s a look at the nine teams they think have the best chance.

Only about half of them make any sense, though. Let’s break down the quarterback situation one by one, starting at the bottom.

Bengals: Cincinnati holds the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft. They are expected to use it on LSU’s Joe Burrow, who just won the Heisman with the help of Carolina’s offensive coordinator Joe Brady. It would be absolute lunacy for them to pick anybody but Burrow or Tua Tagovailoa. You can go ahead and scratch this team off this list.

Steelers: Pittsburgh had a rough time at QB last season, but that was mostly due to an elbow injury for Ben Roethlisberger. While it’s clear he doesn’t have a whole lot of time left, the plan for now seems to be to stick with Big Ben as the starter. It would be extremely surprising if they went with anybody else in 2020.

Raiders: Derek Carr is unlikely to ever become an elite quarterback at this level. However, they just splurged on a backup option by signing Marcus Mariota to a two-year, $17.6 million contract. Signing another veteran this offseason is most likely not in the cards, especially since Newton is probably going to command more.

Jaguars: Jacksonville just traded Nick Foles to the Bears in exchange for a fourth-round pick. The reason? They believe they already have a more capable franchise QB for the future in Gardner Minshew, who showed a ton of promise as a rookie. Signing a player like Newton would only get in his way. The Jags won’t be in the market for Cam.

Chargers: Now we’re talking. With Philip Rivers gone to the Colts, right now LA’s projected starter is Tyrod Taylor. While he is one of the better backups in the league, he’s not cut out to start 16 games. Newton would be a serious upgrade for a team that has the pieces to compete, even in a very tough division.

Dolphins: If they didn’t hold the No. 3. pick in the draft, Newton might be an option. However, if a team is in position to get a new long-term starter on a rookie contract, signing any veteran is unlikely. Obviously anything can happen, but we’re expecting Miami to pick Tagovailoa.

Broncos: This is an interesting possibility. It mostly depends on how Denver feels about Drew Lock and what his ceiling is. He showed potential down the stretch after Joe Flacco was benched. However, he’s still raw and Pro Football Focus gave him a grade even lower than Flacco. John Elway should at least consider Newton, but our gut says he will stick with Lock.

Patriots: If you can’t beat him, sign him. That may be the idea for Bill Belichick, who is 0-2 against Newton in his career and is on record gushing about his skillset. Right now, New England’s best option on the roster is Brian Hoyer, who is a career backup. If we were to place a bet on any team signing Newton, it would be this one.

Redskins: Newton’s connection with Ron Rivera is significant. There are a lot of factors to consider, though. This team just used a first-round pick on Dwayne Haskins last year and they have the No. 2 pick this year, so they have the assets to go in a different direction.

DL Zach Kerr is latest Cardinals free agent to join another team

He joins the Carolina Panthers on a one-year contract.

The Arizona Cardinals now have six free agents who have left to join other teams. The latest is defensive lineman Zach Kerr, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Kerr has agreed to a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers, joining receiver Pharoh Cooper, who also joined the Panthers.

Kerr signed with the Cardinals in October after rookie Zach Allen got hurt. Kerr played in 12 games and started three. He was a solid cog on the defensive line for the Cardinals.

He had 19 tackles and two QB hits.

Kerr enters his seventh NFL season. He played three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, two with the Denver Broncos and one with the Cardinals.

He has played in 75 games and started 12.

So far this offseason, the Cardinals have had free agents Rodney Gunter, Cassius Marsh, Joe Walker, Pharoh Cooper, Damiere Byrd and Kerr leave in free agency. Only Gunter got more than a one-year contract.
