Steelers re-sign long snapper Christian Kuntz

Christian Kuntz has been the Steelers long snapper for the past three seasons.

The Pittsburgh Steelers did not tender restricted free agent long snapper Christian Kuntz or any of their other restricted free agents. This means they can all sign wherever they choose. However, Kuntz isn’t going anywhere as he has re-signed with the Steelers. The move keeps Kuntz with the Steelers long-term and for less than what his tender would have been.

Kuntz has spent his entire three-season career with the Steelers after playing his college football at Duquesne.

This leaves defensive lineman Renell Wren, linebacker Chapelle Russell and running back Godwin Igwebuike as the three restricted free agents Pittsburgh chose not to tender. Igwebuike is the one guy we might expect to see the Steelers bring back at some point.

Jaguars’ Ross Matiscik wants to lead NFL long snappers in tackles

Jaguars special teamers want to see Ross Matiscik win the long snapper tackles title this season.

Two times through the first three games of the season, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Logan Cooke boomed a punt for more than 50 yards and the opposing punt returner was brought down by long snapper Ross Matiscik after picking up just four yards.

That pair of plays made by Matiscik has him tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Christian Kuntz for the league lead in the long snapper tackles race.

It’s no Mark McGwire vs. Sammy Sosa, to be sure. But it’s still a race that Matiscik and the Jaguars are keeping a close eye on.

“That would be sick,” Matiscik said of winning the long snapper tackle title. “My job is to tackle and protect and then anything after that I kind of view as extra. But I take pride in my coverage abilities. I like making plays downfield and helping the team.”

Jaguars special teams coordinator Heath Farwell said Thursday that it’s a title the entire unit wants Matiscik to win.

“It’s something that’s funny because we have a lot of fun in our room and we actually show the long snapper tackle board,” Jaguars special teams coordinator Heath Farwell said Thursday. “It’s something we have a lot of fun with, they love Ross so it’s been a little deal with them on if he can lead the league in tackles. It’s a big part of what we do in our coverage.

“At some point, other coordinators are probably going to start blocking him and not treating him like a snapper, which is a respect for him and his coverage. He’s covering fantastic.”

Matiscik, 27, was a linebacker at Baylor before winning the long snapping job in Jacksonville in 2020. After two reliable seasons in the role, Matiscik signed a five-year, $5.965 million extension with the Jaguars last offseason.

Jacksonville’s special teams struggled in Week 3, allowing a blocked field goal and an 85-yard kickoff return touchdown. But the punt coverage unit has allowed only 5.6 yards per return and it has pinned its opponent inside the 20-yard line seven times — landing the Jaguars in the top 10 in both stats. Matiscik’s coverage downfield has contributed to that success.

“You see people actually blocking him when they usually just let snappers go,” Cooke said. “He just turns into an extra cover guy.”

“He always tells me, ‘Keep them away from the sidelines so they’ll come to me a little bit,'” Cooke added with a laugh.

Last year, Matiscik finished with four tackles — one behind the Denver Broncos’ Mitchell Fraboni and Dallas Cowboys’ Matt Overton for the league lead among long snappers.

Pittsburgh area native Christian Kuntz signed to Steelers practice squad, among slew of moves made on Tuesday

The Pittsburgh Steelers were busy making moves on Tuesday.

Among the slew of roster transactions the Steelers made on Tuesday was the signing of two names that might already be familiar to Black and Gold fans.

Linebacker/long snapper Christian Kuntz was signed to the practice squad, and Pine-Richland High School graduate, tight end Kevin Rader was signed to the 53-man roster.

Kuntz, a Pittsburgh native, worked out for the team last week and is now in his second stint. He was part of the Steelers during training camp in 2019 and 2020 but was released after roster cut-downs. Kuntz was a practice squad member with the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars. The Chartiers Valley High School graduate played collegiately at Duquesne University, where he logged 248 tackles (71.5 for loss) and a school-record 30.5 sacks. Kuntz was also the recipient of two Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards and, according to Teresa Varley of Steelers.com, is the only player three-time All-American honoree in school history.

Rader was part of the Steelers practice squad for most of 2019 and, again, since the start of the 2020 season. The former Green Bay Packer played for Youngstown State University, where he had 44 receptions for 601 yards and four touchdowns.

Pittsburgh also activated tight end Vance McDonald off the reserve/COVID-19 list, where he’s been since Nov. 9. Zach Gentry, who was promoted to the active roster in McDonald’s place versus the Jacksonville Jaguars, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the game. The Steelers placed him on injured reserve on Tuesday.

The tight end moves shore up the position as the Steelers were down to just Eric Ebron for most of the Jaguars game.

What attracts the Steelers to the crop of former XFL players?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed more XFL players than any other team.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed more former XFL players than any other team in the league.

Wide receiver Saeed Blacknall became the sixth player inked to the Steelers from the now-defunct league on Monday.

Blacknall joins offensive tackle Jarron Jones, defensive tackle Cavon Walker, defensive tackle Dewayne Hendrix, safety Tyree Kinnel and long snapper/linebacker Christian Kuntz.

There will be more XFL players who sign NFL deals and get a look in training camp — so far there have been 15. When the Alliance of American Football folded in 2019, more than 50 players signed NFL contracts, but less than half ended up making a team’s roster or practice squad.

So, why are the Steelers attracted to the league’s former players?

Due to the scouting restrictions and challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, post-draft college free agency is going to be chaotic, which is partially why general manager Kevin Colbert was a proponent of expanding the 2020 NFL Draft by three rounds — a suggestion that was shot down by the NFL.

Colbert feels more comfortable in signing former XFL players because of access to medicals, game footage, and recent scouting reports.

“It was good that [XFL] players are made available to us because going through this draft as we are with some limited information, that could curtail some of the college free agents that we’re able to sign just on a knowledge of who they are type basis,” Colbert said in a recent Steelers Nation Unite Huddle.

“So, knowing these players a little bit better, we feel it was important to add as many as we thought could help us in terms of being competitive players for training camp.”

Steelers signing OLB Christian Kuntz

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed their fourth XFL player to add depth to their roster

Mark Kaboly of The Athletic Pittsburgh reported that the Steelers are signing outside linebacker Christian Kuntz. Most recently, he was a long snapper for the XFL Dallas Renegades.

Kuntz was part of the Steelers in the 2019 offseason and provided depth at OLB. He made five tackles and a sack in the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers.

An LB at Duquesne University, Kuntz earned All-America honors three times. He added long snapper to his resume after graduating from Duquesne.

Kuntz entered the NFL in 2017 as a free agent with the New England Patriots. He also spent time with the Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The signing of Kuntz marks the fourth XFL player the Steelers have added. On Wednesday, Pittsburgh signed safety Tyree Kinnel, offensive tackle Jarron Jones, and defensive tackle Cavon Walker.
