3 takeaways from the first Panthers-Colts joint practice

Panthers rookie CB Jaycee Horn was amongst those making some early noise during the team’s first joint practice with the Colts.

*inhales*

Do you smell that? Yes, it’s the pungent scent of iron sharpening iron. It’s the Carolina Panthers and the Indianapolis Colts meeting up for the opening stage in their weekend of regular-season preparation.

Kicking things off was the initial joint practice late Thursday afternoon, where head coach Matt Rhule and his Panthers were welcomed in to (what’ll hopefully be for the next few days) the friendly confines of Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. So . . . how’d it go?

Here are three takeaways from Carolina’s first little taste of tangible on-field competition here in 2021.

Panthers 2021 training camp: 4 players with the most buzz after 4 practices

After four practices at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., here are the four players who are causing the most buzz for the black and blue.

With training camp for the 2021 season now officially under way, the Carolina Panthers have given their fans a little taste of what’s to come. But who has given us the tastiest samples so far?

After four practices at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., here are the four players who are causing the most buzz for the black and blue.

Panthers release 2021 training camp dates

Training camp is back, for the Carolina Panthers and the rest of the NFL. And, after a year away, it’s back for the fans as well.

Whip out those calendars and start circling some dates, folks. Because after a year away from you, the fans, Carolina Panthers training camp is back!

The team officially announced its training camp schedule on Wednesday afternoon, as they return to Spartanburg, S.C. at Wofford College for the summer. Practice will begin in just under a month’s time, on July 28, bright and early at 8:30 a.m. ET.

A few other notable dates include the NFL’s Training Camp: Back Together Saturday, where the league observes the reunion of its fans and their football, on July 31. In celebration of the event, the Panthers will roll out “on-field performances by the TopCats, Sir Purr, PurrCussion and Black & Blue Crew, the Mayor’s Ball Delivery and activities including face painting, food trucks, interactive games, sponsor activations and more.”

Fan Fest makes its comeback as well, as the team will head back to Bank of America Stadium on Friday, Aug. 6. Tickets will cost fans $5, with the proceeds going to Carolina Panthers Charities.

Also sprinkled into the schedule are the joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts and the Baltimore Ravens. The Panthers will travel to Westfield, Ind. for practices on Aug. 12 and 13 ahead of their preseason game against the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium that Sunday, Aug. 15. They will then wrap up by hosting the Ravens at Wofford on Aug. 18 and 19 before their exhibition matchup at home on Aug. 21.

Panthers HC Matt Rhule encouraging team to get vaccinated

Panthers HC Matt Rhule encouraging team to get vaccinated

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule is not looking to make personal health decisions for his players. He is, however, mindful of the proven benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine as well as its competitive implications for the state of his football team moving forward.

“I don’t tell anybody ‘Do it.’ I’ve told our team this is better for our team if we’re vaccinated,” Rhule said at Wednesday’s practice when asked where his guys currently stand on the treatment. “We’ve certainly given our players a lot of information. We certainly presented it like ‘Hey, this is what we’d like the team to do.’ But at the same time, it’s a personal decision for each guy.”

Teams received a memo this week with updated COVID-19 protocols from the NFL and NFLPA. The guidelines differentiate what activities fully vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals are permitted to do during training camp and preseason.

Rhule did go on to state that some players have not received the vaccine for various reasons, citing “different” medical histories and some still being in the window from contracting the virus. That bunch likely includes quarterback Sam Darnold, who drew some attention last week after telling the media he has yet to be vaccinated.

The second-year head coach is still, though, hoping to see the group’s vaccination percentage increase as the season nears, as it would be in the best interest of their personnel.

“I encourage our team to get vaccinated,” he said. “There’s clearly going to be a benefit to have vaccinated players and be at a point where you don’t have to have the same regimen that we have otherwise. So, it’s clearly going to be a competitive advantage to have teams that are more vaccinated than less vaccinated.”
