Carmen’s Crew falls in regional finals of TBT

It was fun again while it lasted. #GoBucks

It was at least a run, but one that ended too soon for the Ohio State alumni team known as Carmen’s Crew.

The retooled and reconfigured team that had a lot of Scarlet and Gray in its DNA made it through the first two rounds of The Basketball Tournament as the No. 4 seed in the Dayton region, but fell to No. 2 seed Friday Beers on Saturday night, 72-63.

Carmen’s Crew started the contest by racing out to a lead and finished the first quarter with a 22-15 lead. Friday Beers didn’t shoot particularly well in the first quarter but started to find the mark from beyond the arc in the second quarter and closed the gap to 39-34 at the half.

The second half was unfortunately a different story. Friday Beers shook off a shooting hangover on Saturday and went on a run to start the third period and rode it all the way to a 55-51 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

Carmens’ Crew hung close and pulled to within just three points (66-63) within the Elam Ending, but Friday Beers connected from deep in two-straight positions to more or less wrap things up including a circus shot from Dee Bost to end things.

Now, we’ll have to wait another year to see if Carmen’s Crew returns to play in the TBT (they said they will) and what the roster might look like.

Carmen’s Crew continues run at The Basketball Tournament, advances to third round

Moving on … #GoBucks

It may not be the same nucleus of Ohio State basketball players we’ve seen in years past with Carmen’s Crew, but the team is looking just as talented through the first two games of The Basketball Tournament.

And on Friday, Carmen’s Crew easily disposed of India Rising in Dayton, 82-56, to advance to the third round of the tournament.

It was a balanced attack for No. 4 seed Carmen’s Crew. Scott Thomas, Javon Bess, and Malik Dime led the team with eleven points each, with Kyle Young, Keyshawn Woods, and Kaleb Wesson each adding ten points toward the victory.

The game was tight and competitive early with the teams ending the first quarter tied at 23 points each. The second period would belong to Carmen’s Crew, however, with the defense clamping down on India Rising, all while pushing the lead out on a 15-2 run and a commanding two-digit lead at halftime.

India Rising tried to claw back into it in the third quarter, getting to within six points before the Buckeyes again went on a run to take control of the game and push the lead to 19 points.

Carmen’s Crew would own the game from there and went into the Elam Ending up by a score of 74-49. Jalen Tate, brother of former Ohio State player Jae’Sean Tate, would score the winning basket for an easy win.

Next up for Carmen’s Crew is a date with No. 2 seed Friday Beers at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday. The winner moves on to the quarterfinals.

Carmen’s Crew eyes return to TBT for 2023

Who’s excited to watch the TBT with Carmen’s Crew planning to make a return? #GoBucks

After taking a year off, the Ohio State alumni team known as Carmen’s Crew, will be back in this year’s The Basketball Tournament.

The news comes from former Buckeye basketball star and Carmen’s Crew coach, Jared Sullinger, on the “Carmen’s Crew” podcast. However, if you enjoyed watching the team because of all of the former Thad Matta players, you might have to get used to a new look.

“We’re going to go with a Holtmann-type group,” Sullinger said on the Feb. 11 episode. “We’re going to have a nice little group of guys that came from the Holtmann era of Ohio State basketball and try to put them on the map, because the old heads, we’re done. We’re getting old. We can’t keep doing it anymore. We’re gonna keep fighting, and we’re going to start a new era of Carmen’s Crew.”

Carmen’s Crew has had a pretty good run at the TBT. It reached the semifinals in Year 1 (then known as Team Scarlet and Gray) and won the tournament in 2019.

The roster for this new group of Ohio State alumni hasn’t been released, but when it is, we’ll be sure to bring it to you.

Carmen’s Crew will not take place in The Basketball Tournament this year

We’ll have to find some other way to fill up our summer now. #GoBucks

For the first time since 2017, the Ohio State alumni team, better known as “Carmen’s Crew,” will not be taking place in The Basketball Tournament. The team first joined the annual $2 million winner-take-all tournament as “Team Scarlet and Gray.”

The name was changed because of trademark concerns, but Ohio State fans filled a void in the summer by watching mostly former Thad Matta players make an annual run in the summer through the tournament for five years. The team went 15-4 all-time in the tournament, even winning the whole thing in 2019.

Team manager and former OSU player Jared Sullinger broke the news on his Twitter account Tuesday.

“Carmen’s Crew fans, we’re disappointed to share that we will be unable to compete in TBT this summer,” Sullinger wrote on Twitter. “Since 2017, we’ve greatly enjoyed the opportunity to get back together and represent The Ohio State University, and we look forward to doing it again in 2023. We hope that all of our fans will continue to support TBT at their events in Cincinnati, Dayton, and around the country this summer.”

I don’t know about you, but it sure was fun to watch some of the players that made OSU basketball so fun under the Thad Matta era get together and run it back each year. We’ll just have to see how things play out for next season.

Ohio State basketball alums Carmen’s Crew to play TBT again in 2022

Guess who’s back for another run?

If you are into some summer basketball with former Ohio State greats on the court, then we’ve got some news for you. According to an announcement on the team’s Twitter account on Wednesday, Carmen’s Crew will be back in action for the 2022 TBT (The Basketball Tournament).

It wasn’t a great showing for the No. 1 seed of the Columbus Region last year. The Ohio State alumni team made up mostly of Thad Matta era former players won its first game but lost in the round of 16 against after blowing an 18-point lead to fall by two points to The Money Team.

It’ll be Carmen’s Crew’s 6th straight appearance in the TBT, with the team taking home the $2 million winner-take-all prize as the champion of the 2019 tournament.

It is unclear which players will participate on this year’s team, but you can likely expect more changes than what we’ve seen in the past. Both Jake Diebler and Aaron Craft are moving on based on comments made last year, so it’ll be interesting to see how those holes are filled.

The host sites, dates, times, and rosters will all come at a later date, and we’ll have more when we get more details.
