See it: Giants coaches scouting for the future at Senior Bowl, Shrine Bowl

Some sights and sounds from New York Giants coaches and assistants at both the 2024 Senior Bowl and 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl.

The New York Giants are well-represented at the 2024 Senior Bowl and the 2024 East-West Shrine Game this week — both in terms of coaches and scouts.

At the Senior Bowl, quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney is serving as the offensive coordinator of the National Team with assistant special teams coach Mike Adams serving as the special teams coordinator of the American Team.

Meanwhile, at the Shrine Bowl, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is serving as head coach of the West Team. He’s been joined by offensive assistant Angela Baker, who is coaching tight ends.

Newly hired special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial is filling that same role for the East Team.

Here are some quick sights and sounds from the Giants’ side of things at these two games.

Report: Giants’ Carmen Bricillo comes with ‘unusual number’ of red flags

Incoming New York Giants offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo reportedly arrives to East Rutherford with an “unusual number” of red flags.

On January 11, the New York Giants hired former Las Vegas Raiders assistant Carmen Bricillo to fill their offensive line coaching vacancy.

They had fired Bobby Johnson after the season finale, a change that was inevitable after the injury-riddled line performed about as poorly as any unit in the league this year.

With all the turmoil and criticism surrounding head coach Brian Daboll’s management style comes a story about Bricillo’s style, which is being compared to that of Daboll’s.

ESPN Giants beat writer Jordan Raanan recently reported that Bricillo comes in the door with quite a few “red flags.”

From NJ Advance Media:

ESPN Giants reporter Jordan Raanan said Jan. 18 on his “Breaking Big Blue” podcast that he’s “heard an unusual number of things questioning (Carmen Bricillo) as a coach” — even as he’s led successful units. Bricillo will oversee the Giants’ offensive line, a group that has been a disaster for years.

“Whether it be, you know, again, a lot of the same things that we saw with Brian Daboll — that the players didn’t love him in Las Vegas,” Raanan said. “Do we really care if he produces good results? No, but if you start losing guys, that becomes a factor.” Raanan also reported in an ESPN story that there are “questions about his coaching techniques.”

No one is sure when players and coaches loving each other became a prerequisite for success in this league but it doesn’t hurt. Daboll was recently outed for his incessant yelling and finger-pointing, a style that led to beloved defensive coordinator Wink Martindale to part ways with the team.

Bricillo is a results-oriented coach, which is what the Giants need, especially on the offensive line. The Giants allowed 85 sacks this season, the second-most allowed by a team in NFL history. Brilillo’s Raiders crew allowed just 40 in 2023.

Giants hire Carmen Bricillo: 6 things to know about the O-line coach

The New York Giants have officially hired Carmen Bricillo and here are six things to know about the team’s new offensive line coach.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll completed their comprehensive and in-depth one-person search for a new offensive line coach on Thursday.

The team announced that Carmen Bricillo, the only man publicly known to have interviewed for the job, had been hired to replace Bobby Johnson, who was fired on Monday.

Here are six quick things to know about Bricillo.

Giants hire Carmen Bricillo as next offensive line coach

The New York Giants announced they have hired former Las Vegas Raiders offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo to the same position.

The New York Giants have wasted little time filling their offensive line coach vacancy. The team announced it is hiring former Las Vegas Raiders offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo to replace the recently fired Bobby Johnson.

Bricillo, 47, was the Raiders’ offensive line coach the past two seasons after spending the previous three seasons with the New England Patriots, where he worked his way up from a coaching assistant to offensive line coach.

The Raiders’ offensive line has progressively improved under Bricillo. The Raiders allowed just 40 sacks this past season, tied for 12th-fewest in the NFL.

The Giants allowed 85 sacks in 2023, the most in the league since the 1986 Philadelphia Eagles.

Bricillo comes from the same coaching tree as Giants head coach Brian Daboll (Bill Belichick) and is likely more in tune to Daboll’s style than Johnson was. He also spent one season as an assistant under Patriots legendary offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia.

Former Raiders OL coach Carmen Bricillo hired by Giants

Raiders OL coach Carmen Bricillo takes same position with Giants

The first official move has been made regarding a Raiders coaching hire. It’s a departure. Offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo has been hired to the same position with the Giants.

It was expected that much of the Raiders offensive staff would be leaving this offseason. The Raiders had already ousted head coach Josh McDaniels and offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi midseason, promoting Antonio Pierce to interim head coach and QB coach Bo Hardegree to offensive coordinator.

The offense was a major issue all season despite McDaniels being a longtime offensive coordinator. It was the defense that stepped up in most games under defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

Teams have reached out to interview Graham for their vacant DC jobs and have been denied those requests, which is a sign the Raiders would like to give the next head coach the option of keeping Graham in that position. It is also a sign that Pierce is at least in the running to keep the head coaching job.

Giants to interview Carmen Bricillo for O-line coaching job

The New York Giants will interview Carmen Bricillo for their vacant offensive line coaching position previously held by Bobby Johnson.

Black Monday has passed and teams are lining up interviews for replacement coaches.

The New York Giants have several slots to fill, including that of former offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, who was let go on Monday.

The Giants are set to interview Las Vegas Raiders offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo to replace Johnson.

Johnson came with Brian Daboll from the Buffalo Bills, but how he performed with the Giants simply did not work. They ended the season with the worst offensive line in the league, resulting in multiple injuries to quarterbacks.

Bricillo’s first experience coaching in the NFL was with the New England Patriots, where he spent three years under Bill Belichick. Given Daboll’s history with the Patriots, it’s no surprise he wants to chat with Bricillo. The Raiders didn’t make the playoffs either, but their offensive line wasn’t the problem.

This is one of many interviews the Giants will have this offseason. With so many slots to fill, it’s going to be busy until decisions are made. And then it will be time to fix the problems that plagued the team this season.

Josh McDaniels taps two more Patriots assistants for Raiders OC and OL coach

Josh McDaniels raids the Patriots for two more coaches

Two more key positions on the Raiders coaching staff are now filled. And once again Josh McDaniels reaches back to those with whom he is familiar, nabbing former Patriots wide receivers coach Mick Lombardi as his new offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo for the same position.

Lombardi has been a coach at the NFL level since 2013. He and Bricillo have been with the Patriots for three seasons. Lombardi started out with the Pats in 2019 as assistant quarterbacks coach, while Bricillo was assistant Oline coach. Lombardi and Bricillo have spent the past two seasons as WR coach and OL coach respectively.

With the hiring of Lombardi as OC, all three coordinators are now in house. Previously Patrick Graham was hired as defensive coordinator and Tom McMahon as special teams coordinator.

Lombardi comes on board with several offensive coaches already in place. McDaniels had already poached Patriots offensive assistant Bo Hardegree as the team’s new QB coach. He also opted to retain WR coach Edgar Bennett.

Other assistants in place include DB coach Chris Ash, Defensive passing game coordinator Jason Simmons, and defensive assistant Rob Ryan.

Report: Raiders hire two more Patriots coaches to join Josh McDaniels

The Patriots’ coaching staff is getting is extremely thin on the offensive side.

The Las Vegas Raiders hired wide receivers coach Mick Lombardi and offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo to their coaching staff, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Both coaches were on the New England Patriots’ staff and they’ll join Josh McDaniels as he shapes the Raiders’ offense. Lombardi and Bricillo will join former Patriots assistant quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree — leaving New England’s coaching staff on the offensive side extremely thin.

Longtime Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears is expected to retire this offseason as well, leaving the Patriots without five key contributors on the offensive side of the ball. This also leaves very little support for Mac Jones, who’s entering a pivotal second year in the league.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss offered a couple of potential moves the Patriots could make internally.

Bill Belichick will have a lot on his hands this offseason, and the addition of Joe Judge as an offensive assistant won’t nearly be enough.

Dante Scarnecchia believes Patriots are in good hands with OL coaches

Replacing Dante Scarnecchia is nearly impossible, but the Patriots should still be in good hands.

Dante Scarnecchia’s impact for the New England Patriots can’t be put into words.

The legendary coach joined the team in 1982 and spent nearly two decades coaching numerous positions, before taking over the offensive line in 1999 and holding that role for most of the following two decades. Scarnecchia, 72, officially retired at the end of the 2019 season and walked away with five Super Bowl championships.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss caught up with him and talked about life after retirement — while discussing the Patriots’ current coaching situation on the offensive line. The Patriots have Cole Popovich and Carmen Bricillo sharing responsibilities for the 2020 season.

“They’re both really good coaches and both really good people. Very, very smart guys,” Scarnecchia said. “I know no one has been named, and there are reasons for that, but clearly those are the two guys that are going to do it, and I think they’ll do an outstanding job. The other thing is they know the players. It’s not like they’re new, coming in from the outside. They’ve both been around there — especially Cole, who has been in the system for five years. Carm for one.”

The Patriots will have a solid unit together if healthy. David Andrews is returning after missing 2019 with blood clots and Isaiah Wynn showed he’s the real deal while on the field. Popovich and Bricillo both spent time with Scarnecchia, giving them a leg up on the difficult roles they’ll have.
