Darius Garland had a priceless reaction to Caris LeVert’s stellar layup during Magic – Cavaliers

This reaction from Darius Garland was priceless.

During the Eastern Conference first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled off a fantastic sequence for two points against the visiting Orlando Magic.

On the basket, Cavs guard Darius Garland made a beautiful pass to fellow guard Caris LeVert, who made a falling layup despite tough defense from Magic forward Paolo Banchero and drew a foul in the process.

As Garland went up to LeVert to congratulate him on the play, he made the funniest gesture to express his disbelief in what his teammate pulled off.

Garland’s bewildered celebration really was just as enjoyable to watch as LeVert’s stellar play.

We’ll see how far the four-seed Cavaliers can make it in this year’s Eastern Conference gauntlet, but plays and celebrations like this from LeVert and Garland will keep the team incredibly entertaining for as long as they’re playing.

At the least, this is such a fun highlight so early in this year’s playoffs.

Former Michigan basketball G Caris LeVert agrees to new two-year deal

Awesome news for Caris! #GoBlue

Caris LeVert is staying home.

The Ohio native joined the Cleveland Cavaliers last season and had career highs in multiple categories as his career continues to flourish. The former Wolverines guard got his start with the Brooklyn Nets before being traded to the Indiana Pacers. He played a season there and was traded again midseason to the Cavs.

His patience is reportedly paying off.

According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the former star of Pickerington (Ohio) Central in the Columbus suburbs has agreed to a new two-year deal to keep him in his home state. He will make $32 million on his new contract.

LeVert’s NBA prospects weren’t exactly high coming out of Michigan given his rash of injuries that plagued his career. He struggled with being healthy throughout his time in Ann Arbor, and while he’s made a name for himself in the NBA, the injury struggles have plagued him in the professional ranks, as well.

However, after only eclipsing 60 games played once in his career (71 in 2017-18), he managed to set a career-high by playing in 74 games this past season, while also having his best season in 3-point percentage.

Extension before 2023 free agency: Who are the candidates?

Here are six players who could avoid free agency by receiving an extension this week.

As free agency approaches, potential free agents are preparing for their future. Teams and players can begin negotiations on June 30, the final day of the 2022-23 salary cap year. Some players, still extension-eligible till that date, can bypass free agency by signing a new deal now. Naz Reid and the Minnesota Timberwolves have initiated proceedings three-year, $42 million deal that he was eligible to sign all season long.

Some players like Draymond Green and Khris Middleton, who seem like good bets to re-sign with their current teams would make sense as extension candidates. However, they could be looking at securing long-term deals where they get a lower starting salary. They wouldn’t be allowed to extend at a lower starting salary than the player option amounts they declined, but they could in free agency. The new CBA has changed that rule to allow such players with options to extend at lower amounts starting next offseason.

Here are several other players who remain extension-eligible and could come to terms on a deal prior to free agency.

Wolverines as pros: How former Michigan basketball stars are doing in the NBA

They are doing some good things in the NBA this season! #GoBlue

Going back to the John Beilein days at Michigan, the Wolverines have produced some good NBA talent.

Currently, the maize and blue have nine players in the NBA and most of them see significant playing time. There are a couple players that have a difficult time seeing the floor, but most of the former Michigan stars have an important role for their respective teams.

Former players like Zaiver Simpson, Chaundee Brown Jr., and DJ Wilson are still trying to claw their way back into the NBA and are currently in the G-League.

Here are the nine former Michigan basketball players in the NBA and their stats from the 2022-23 season.

Lakers one of several teams reportedly interested in Caris LeVert

If the Lakers choose to upgrade their backcourt, the Cavs’ Caris LeVert could be a trade target.

After the Los Angeles Lakers acquired forward Rui Hachimura on Monday, everyone is wondering if they will make another move in an attempt to contend for an NBA championship right away.

Many have felt Los Angeles would be in the market for another frontcourt player. The player most often linked to them these days is Bojan Bogdanovic, a 3-point bomber who is currently with the Detroit Pistons. However, the Pistons’ asking price for him is likely too high for the Lakers to pull the trigger.

Another option, according to Brian Windhorst, is to upgrade the backcourt instead. If it goes that route, it could opt to acquire either a ball-handling guard or someone who is more of a wing who can play the 2 and the 3.

When it comes to the latter option, Caris LeVert could be a trade target for the Lakers.

Via Hoops Wire (h/t Lakers Daily):

“So far everyone from the Pistons to the (Charlotte) Hornets to (Los Angeles) Clippers and (Utah) Jazz has expressed an interest in LeVert,” Sam Amico of Hoops Wire reported. “And yes, even the Lakers have kicked around the idea of a LeVert trade in their scanning of rival rosters in their search for more help, sources told Hoops Wire. (In fact, it’s been said that LeVert is a favorite of LeBron James.)”

LeVert is a seven-year veteran who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He has been in and out of their starting lineup, and the Lakers are in the market for a reliable starting-caliber player at the 3.

He stands 6-foot-6 and has always been a potent scorer and secondary playmaker, but efficiency has always been an issue. He has never shot better than 45% from the field for an entire season, and his 3-point accuracy has always fluctuated.

While he is shooting lights-out from downtown this month, he struggled from that distance throughout November and December.

Trade rumor rankings: Bradley Beal, Christian Wood and more

HoopsHype ranks the five players who have appeared most often in trade rumors over the past week, led by Bradley Beal and Christian Wood.

The trade market is awfully quiet in the NBA right now but sometimes, that’s what happens right before we see a surprise trade go down.

After all, who would have thought the Boston Celtics would have traded Noah Vonleh as they did last week? Sure, it was a meaningless deal as Vonleh was waived by the San Antonio Spurs but still, you just never know for sure what’s going on behind the scenes in the NBA.

Below, check out our latest trade rumor rankings, where we rank the five players who have appeared most often in trade rumors over the previous week, as judged by appearances on our trade page.

We are a month away from this year’s trade deadline and candidates to be moved are starting to emerge. There are several players who are having down years compared to previous seasons and could potentially benefit from a change of scenery. Some of these players are miscast in new situations while others have seen their roles reduced by big changes to their team’s roster. While some of these players haven’t been explicitly reported to be trade candidates, their respective teams are probably willing to listen to offers for them.

Here are some players who could benefit from being traded to a new team…

Projected starting lineup for Cavaliers with Donovan Mitchell makes them Eastern Conference favorites

This team is going to be a problem.

The Cleveland Cavaliers pulled off the biggest shocker of the offseason by trading for Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell.

After exceeding expectations last season, the Cavs accelerated their rebuild with this trade. They have added three-time All-Star Mitchell to a core that already included two All-Stars in Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen — as well as Evan Mobley, who may be the most valuable player on the entire roster.

Cleveland made the play-in tournament last season, but they are heading into the upcoming campaign as a force to be reckoned with. In addition to the stellar defense in their frontcourt with Mobley and Allen, they now have one of the best backcourts in the league with Mitchell and Garland. All four are currently 25 years old or younger.

Here is their projected starting lineup now that they have made this trade:

Caris LeVert solves the exact problem the Cavaliers needed to become legit contenders

The Cleveland Cavaliers are the winners of the trade deadline thus far, landing Caris LeVert without surrendering any of their young core.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are the winners of the trade deadline thus far, landing Caris LeVert from the Pacers in an effort to help win now.

LeVert, acquired without surrendering any of their young core, will join a Cleveland squad that has exceeded expectations so far this season. However, as well as they have played and with an outstanding culture built on their defensive identity, it is a team that desperately required LeVert’s services.

That’s because the team lost a significant contributor in Nov. 2021 when young guard Collin Sexton underwent season-ended surgery for a knee injury. Perhaps the most glaring issue with the offense was that the Cavs were suddenly without capable ballhandlers on their roster.

Cleveland is averaging 2.15 dribbles per touch, which is actually the 2nd-lowest mark among all teams in the Eastern Conference. It is also the fewest dribbles per touch any Cavs team has averaged in the seasons since tracking data first became available, via data courtesy from Second Spectrum, in 2013.

Among the 11 players on the Cavs who have logged at least 400 minutes (or about 16% of all possible minutes for the team) so far this season, Darius Garland and Ricky Rubio are the only players who have averaged more than 1.5 dribbles per possession. (For context, the league average is currently 2.2 dribbles per touch.)

But after Rubio suffered a torn ACL in Dec., Garland became the only capable dribbler in the rotation. Although the front office traded for Rajon Rondo to amend some of those issues, he turns 36 years old later this month and was likely more of a stop-gap than anything else.

Fortunately, this is an issue Cleveland’s front office addressed by trading for LeVert. The former Michigan standout is averaging the second-most dribbles (3.8) and seconds (4.2) per touch that he has ever recorded in his professional career.

In fact, the only players 6-foot-6 or taller who average at least as many dribbles as LeVert (minimum: 450 touches) are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, DeMar DeRozan, and Spencer Dinwiddie. With the same qualifications, the only other players who are averaging at least even 3.0 dribbles per touch are Cade Cunningham, LaMelo Ball, Paul George, Alec Burks, LeBron James, and Jimmy Butler.

There are a ton of reasons why a basketball team needs capable ballhandlers like LeVert, who can score in bunches. One of the most obvious, though, is to run the pick and roll.

Cleveland ranks as the third-worst in scoring when ball handlers finish pick and roll sets. Garland’s pick and roll set sets compose more than 42.0% of his offensive possessions and his efficiency ranks in the 66th percentile. But no other healthy player in their rotation has finished even 6.0% of possessions in the pick and roll — nor does any player’s efficiency even rank above the 30th percentile.

LeVert, however, has finished nearly 40.0% of his offensive possessions as the ball handler in pick and roll sets. He is averaging 0.96 points per possession on these opportunities, according to Synergy, which ranks in the 82nd percentile among NBA players.

Both as a scorer and as a playmaker, from their time together on the Brooklyn Nets, he already has established pick-and-roll chemistry with Cleveland’s Jarrett Allen:

Overall, before this trade, Cavs struggled to score when putting the ball on the floor. Cleveland has averaged 19.1 pull-up jump shot attempts per game, via NBA.com, which is currently second-lowest in the league and the lowest in the Eastern Conference.

LeVert, however, averaged what was a Pacers-best 6.4 points per game when shooting pull-up jumpers. Outside of Garland, no healthy player on the Cavs has even averaged 2.0 PPG.

When the postseason rolls around, you need guys like LeVert who can put the ball on the floor and consistently score. He has shown he is someone who can create a basket for himself and others, and if Garland was the only player on Cleveland capable of doing that, he would have faced some serious trouble in the playoffs.

Caris LeVert trade grades: Who won the Pacers and Cavaliers deal?

Who won this one?

We have another NBA trade ahead of the 2022 deadline coming this Thursday.

This time, it’s the Indiana Pacers who pulled off a deal as the franchise might be starting up a rebuild in the next few days if they also find new homes for Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis.

Caris LeVert is on his way to the Cleveland Cavaliers, giving the surprise Eastern contenders an upgrade at wing where they could use the help. In exchange? They gave up an expiring contract and picks, not a ton to give up for a talent in LeVert.

So who won this deal? Let’s break it down:
