The Minnesota Vikings will kick off their 2023 regular season in 24 days at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 10.

From now until then, we will take a trip down memory lane and count each day by revisiting the players that have worn that specific jersey number.

Defensive back Camryn Bynum currently wears the No. 24 for the Minnesota Vikings.

PFF names Panthers’ best value free agent contract since 2013

The best free agent value the Panthers have gotten from the past nine years, according to PFF, came with a player they had signed on three different occasions.

Former Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman wasn’t known to be much of a free agent shopper. In fact, he even kidded about his penny pinching on one occasion back in 2015—stating he had to go bargain hunting at the “dollar store” the offseason prior.

But that thriftiness actually brought (or bought) the franchise its best free agent deal of the past nine years—at least according to Pro Football Focus.

Salary cap analyst Brad Spielberger recently dove all the way back to 2013 to find each team’s best value signing. And for Gettleman and the Panthers, theirs came from that very offseason the “Hogfather” was alluding to—in the form of cornerback Captain Munnerlyn.

“Munnerlyn signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Panthers in 2013,” Spielberger writes. “He generated .488 wins above replacement, which carried a value of $12,004,800. That season, Munnerlyn earned the best PFF grade (79.5) of his eventual 10-year career.”

Munnerlyn, a University of South Carolina product, initially joined the organization as a seventh-round pick out of the 2009 NFL draft. He’d go on to ink that one-year pact when his rookie deal expired after the 2012 campaign.

The freshly-compensated defender proceeded to return two interceptions for scores that season, all while notching career-highs in tackles (74), tackles for a loss (four), sacks (3.0) and quarterback hits (five). His efforts helped the Panthers, who finished with a 12-4 mark and an NFC South division crown, allow the second-fewest yards and second-fewest points in the league.

Even more money would come Munnerlyn’s way, as he promptly earned himself a three-year, $11.25 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings in 2014. And when that was up, his biggest payday came on a four-year, $17.5 million agreement with, ironically enough, Gettleman and the Panthers in 2017.

Former Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn arrested on accusations of assault

Former Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn was arrested back in early January upon being accused of assault and strangulation of a woman.

According to a report on Thursday from WSOC-TV, former Carolina Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn has been accused of assaulting and strangling a woman. Records show the 33-year-old was arrested on Jan. 10 in Lincoln County, N.C.

The accusations stem from an incident that took place on Jan. 3, in which the alleged victim claims she was strangled and kicked in the face by Munnerlyn. Her account also alleges she had bruises, scratches and difficulty breathing following the encounter.

Munnerlyn, who was charged with assaulting a female and assault by strangulation, had been released from custody after posting $7,500 bond. He’s due back in the Mecklenburg County courthouse on March 1.

Having last played in 2018, Munnerlyn spent seven of his 10 NFL seasons with the Panthers. The 2009 seventh-round draft pick out of the University of South Carolina appeared in a total of 107 games with the organization—totaling 357 tackles and a franchise-record five interception returns for a touchdown.

Munnerlyn had also been arrested back in 2020 at Miami International Airport for allegedly writing bad checks.

Cam Newton’s former Panthers teammates react to his return

Panthers fans weren’t the only ones showing their excitement for Cam Newton’s return to Carolina.

There was plenty of excitement to be had on Thursday, as the Carolina Panthers did what was thought to be the unthinkable and brought back Cam Newton. The fans, however, weren’t the only ones basking in that glory.

Let’s take a look at some of the day’s best reactions from Newton’s former Panthers teammates, who couldn’t help but spread their love for the move.

Report: Former Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn arrested in Miami

Report: Former Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn arrested in Miami for allegedly writing bad checks.

According to a report by Andy Slater, former Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn was arrested at Miami International Airport over a warrant in Las Vegas for allegedly writing bad checks.

Slater followed up with more details, saying he was removed from a flight to Cancun, Mexico. For what it’s worth, Munnerlyn’s attorney says the whole thing is a complete misunderstanding.

Munnerlyn came into the NFL in 2009 as one of Marty Hurney’s rare late-round draft picks that hit. The Panthers picked him in the seventh round of that year’s draft and he played the next five seasons in Carolina, followed by three with the Vikings before returning to the Panthers for 2017-2018.

Munnerlyn spent a part of the spring last year with the Bills, but he was released long before the season began and spent the year as a free agent.

In 154 career games, Munnerlyn has totaled 12 interceptions, 64 pass breakups and 421 solo tackles.

Steelers QB Mason Rudolph has a new team this offseason

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph has been training with the enemy.

The NFL still has restrictions on teams gathering, but that hasn’t kept players from getting in workouts with each other.

Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph took an unspecified football field to train with free-agent cornerback Captain Munnerlyn and the Chicago Bears’ Tarik Cohen and Corrdarelle Patterson.

Rudolph and Patterson go way back to their native Rock Hill, S.C. and both attended Northwestern High School.

Albeit brief, Patterson posted video on his Instagram story.
