Jalen Pickett leads Penn State to important road win at Ohio State

Jalen Pickett put Penn State on his back and carried them to a key road win at Ohio State.

The goal is simple for Penn State. Win out and they’ll have a shot of going to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 12 years.

After starting February with three straight losses, Penn State is now riding a three-game win streak after Tuesday’s 75-71 win over Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.

The game was spectacular. The two teams went back and forth throughout the 40 minutes of game time.

Coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] made sure his team knew they had to get off to an early start. The team listened and took an 11-8 lead four minutes into the game.

Then, it was a rollercoaster ride of who held the lead.

There were 12 lead changes in the first half alone, including a four minute stretch where every basket scored changed the lead.

When the first half buzzer sounded, the game was tied 37-37.

But things could have gone off the rails early for Penn State.

Coming into this game, the Nittany Lions had two road wins all season. They have not been the same team away from home and this was their second road game in a row.

Then, seven minutes into the game, [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] picked up his second foul. Their best player had to sit for a good chunk of time.

The senior guards rose to the occasion. [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] scored 14 points and [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] 11 in the first half to keep Penn State in the game.

The rollercoaster ride continued in the second half. There were eight more lead changes for a total of 20. When there wasn’t a lead change, the game was tied five times.

After scoring just two points at the break, Pickett wasn’t going to stay quiet for long.

He completely took the game over in the second half, scoring 21 of his 23 points in the period, including the dagger.

Up one with a minute left, Pickett isolated Ohio State freshman [autotag]Brice Sensabaugh[/autotag]. He made layup and drew a foul to give Penn State a 73-69 lead.

Four points was all the separation the Nittany Lions needed to close out the game as Ohio State missed five consecutive three pointers on the final possession.

Pickett’s 23 points led the game. Lundy finished with 19 points and Wynter with 18. The Ohio State freshmen guards Sensabaugh and [autotag]Bruce Thornton[/autotag] scored 20 and 19 points respectively.

This was an impressive win for Penn State. The Big Ten leader in three pointers, [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag], didn’t make a single one in this game. Other players had to fill the void when Pickett went out with foul trouble.

It feels like Penn State is starting to hit their stride at just the right time.

Their three remaining games on the schedule are all classified as Quad 1. Winning those games are the most important criteria the committee looks at when determining at large invitations.

Penn State plays Rutgers in the Bryce Jordan Center on Sunday night. This will be a rematch from earlier in the year when the Nittany Lions lost on the road.

The game will be air on Big Ten Network starting at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Photos from Penn State basketball’s big road win at Ohio State

Check out the photos from Jalen Pickett and Penn State’s big road win at Ohio State to keep tournament hopes alive.

[autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] was a man on a mission on Thursday night as Penn State came away with a massive road win at Ohio State. While a win against the Buckeyes doesn’t carry the weight this season it has in previous years, the Nittany Lions needed the win in Columbus to keep their hopes of reaching the NCAA tournament alive. And Pickett rose to the occasion.

Pickett put the team on his shoulders with a strong second-half performance to continue making a great impression on the national radar. If Pickett can continue to carry the load for the Nittany Lions in the final stretch of the regular season, the tournament hopes will continue to build momentum at the right time.

Here are some of the best photos from Penn State’s 75-71 victory at Ohio State on Thursday evening.

Penn State basketball gets needed road win against Minnesota

Penn State basketball found a way to get a needed win on the road against lowly Minnesota

Penn State took care of business Saturday night against Minnesota. They won 76-69 to secure their second road win of the season.

This was a must-win game for the Nittany Lions.

After keeping their slim NCAA tournament hopes alive with a win over Illinois on Tuesday, they couldn’t afford a slip-up against the last-place team in the Big Ten.

Penn State started the game hot. They made five of their first six shots before the 16-minute media timeout. Minnesota was also matching them shot for shot and it was a close game for the first 10 minutes.

At the 10:22 mark, [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] hit a jumper to take lead and Penn State never looked back.

They never relinquished the lead again for the rest of the half. Minnesota managed to tie the game at 29, but that was the closest they came.

Penn State used an 8-0 run to go into the halftime locker room with a 10-point lead.

During Penn State’s losses, it’s been a tale of two halves; a successful one and one full of cold shooting and defensive lapses.

That looked to be the case early in the second half.

The Nittany Lions scored one point over in six and a half minutes after halftime. Minnesota took a 46-48 lead with 14 minutes left in the game.

The road struggles seemed to be rearing their ugly head again.

However, this game was different. Penn State used an 11-0 run to come from behind and take a 61-52 lead with eight and a half minutes to go.

This closed the book on the game.

The closest Minnesota ever got to the lead again was three points.

Coming off his historic performance at the Bryce Jordan Center, Pickett was sensational again.

He finished the game with 32 points and a near triple-double, adding nine rebounds and eight assists.

Senior guards [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] and [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] added 14 and 11 points respectively. Minnesota forward [autotag]Dawson Garcia[/autotag] was the game’s second-leading scorer with 23 points.

This was an important victory for Penn State. They kept themselves close to the March Madness bubble and set up a big showdown against Ohio State who travels to Purdue on Sunday.

Penn State travels to Ohio State on Tuesday night. The game will be aired on Fox Sports 1 at 6:30 pm ET.

Penn State loses heartbreaker in overtime against Wisconsin

Penn State’s loss to Wisconsin on Wednesday was a tough one for the Nittany Lions

The Bryce Jordan Center has been a fortress for Penn State this season. Coming into Wednesday night’s game against Wisconsin, they had only lost once at home.

That changed after a 74-79 loss in overtime.

[autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] led the team in scoring with 17 points along with eight rebounds and eight assists. Guard [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] added 15 points and [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] continued his hot shooting stretch with four three pointers.

However, it wasn’t enough to slow down Wisconsin, who came into the game with a losing conference record on the road.

Penn State got off to a good start early in the game from three-point range, hitting their first two. Those were the only threes made in the first half as they missed their next seven three-pointers.

After Penn State’s second made three-pointer two minutes into the game, the offense went cold. A scoreless stretch of five and a half minutes was exacerbated by seven missed shots in a row.

Jalen Pickett hit a buzzer-beater before halftime to make the deficit six points.

The second half was a familiar story that Penn State has been facing their last three games. Finding themselves in a hole and trying to climb their way out.

Wisconsin was able to keep them on the ropes for the majority of the second half. With just over four minutes left to play, Penn State took their first lead of the game since they led 8-5 two minutes into the first half.

In the final three minutes of the game, there were three lead changes and three ties.

Wisconsin guard Chucky Hepburn, the game’s leading scorer with 19 points, hit a three with 33 seconds left to put the Badgers up three points.

Seth Lundy answered with his own three to tie the game up at 68 and force overtime.

That was the closest Penn State would be for the remainder night.

Wisconsin took the early lead and didn’t give it back, handing Penn State their third loss in a row.

This season, the home court has proven to be a major advantage for the Nittany Lions. That’s why this overtime loss was so crushing.

For a team that clearly struggles on the road, dropping games at home is a recipe for disaster.

The story of this three-game losing streak is the inability to guard the three-point line.

Purdue shot 45 percent, Nebraska shot 40 percent and Wisconsin shot 46 percent.

Penn State will look to end its losing streak Saturday as they go on the road to face Maryland.

Penn State basketball routs Indiana for B1G win

Penn State scorched Indiana from three-point range in rout of Hoosiers on Wednesday night.

Penn State basketball returned to the Bryce Jordan Center and returned to the win column as well. The Nittany Lions dominated Indiana from start to finish in a 85-66 victory over the visiting Hoosiers to even its Big Ten record early in the year.

[autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] scored his 1,000th career point while powering the offense with 25 points. Lundy drained seven three-point shots as well to lead the way. [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] was also on fire from beyond the arc with seven three-pointers made. Penn State tied a school record for a single game with 18 three-pointers made. Penn State set the program record for most threes in a game earlier this season against Winthrop.

Penn State also did well in moving the ball around. The 19 assists by the team were the most in a Big Ten game this season for Penn State.

The 19-point margin of victory is the largest for Penn State over Indiana in program history as well.

Penn State is now 2-12 in Big Ten games played at home with wins against Indiana and Iowa. The only Big Ten loss at home was against Michigan State in the Big Ten opener. Penn State snapped a two-game losing streak following losses at Michigan and to Purdue in Philadelphia.

Next up for Penn State is a road trip to Wisconsin to face the Badgers. Penn State will have some time to prepare for that next game, which is scheduled for next Tuesday, January 17.

Best photos from Penn State’s game vs. Purdue at the Palestra

Here are the best photos from Penn State basketball’s game at the Palestra vs. Purdue

Penn State basketball once again made itself at home in one of college basketball’s historic venues, the Palestra in Philadelphia, on Sunday evening against one of the top teams in the sport, the Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue brought a no. 1 ranking into the Palestra and looked to avoid being the first top-ranked team in the AP poll to lose a game in the arena in over 60 years, but Penn State gave the Boilermakers a bit of a scare in the first half.

Penn State couldn’t build off the energy of leading Purdue at halftime and struggled to slow down the momentum shift favoring Purdue after halftime.

Here are some of the best photos from Penn State’s virtual home game in the Palestra against No. 1 Purdue.

Penn State basketball holds off Iowa for New Year’s Day victory

Penn State basketball started off 2023 by holding on for a win against Iowa

If Penn State needed a good gut check, it passed it on New Year’s Day. Penn State led Iowa by 18 points at halftime and had every reason to feel good about securing another win on its home court on Sunday, but Iowa made a serious run at the Nittany Lions in the second half. But each time Iowa cut things razor sharp on the scoreboard, Penn State responded and that led to a hard-earned 83-79 victory for the Nittany Lions, improving its record to 11-3 this season overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten as 2023 was ushered in on a winning note.

Penn State controlled and frustrated Iowa in the first half and led by a score of 44-26 at the break. But Iowa chipped away in the second half with Kris Murray’s game-high 32 points leading the way. Iowa came within a basket of Penn State twice in the second half but [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] and [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] each came through on the free throw line in the final minute with four combined free throws made to help keep Penn State ahead of the Hawkeyes by just enough.

Pickett led the Nittany Lions with 26 points to go with his seven rebounds and six assists and one steal. the 26 points scored by Pickett is his personal best since joining the Penn State program last season. [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] was the team’s second-leading scorer with 20 points fueled by five three-pointers. Lundy, who recorded a double-double in his last game, added 10 points and five rebounds. Penn State also got 14 points from [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] to have four starters have double-digit point totals.

[autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag] contributed seven points off the Penn State bench and is now just two points shy of the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Next up for Penn State is a road trip to Michigan. The Nittany Lions tipoff with the Wolverines on Wednesday night on the Big Ten Network. Michigan improved to 8-5 this season with a thrashing of Maryland in Ann Arbor on Sunday. Michigan blew out Maryland 81-46.

Penn State drops double overtime thriller at Clemson

Three players scoring at least 20 points wasn’t enough to help Penn State at Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Penn State trailed Clemson by seven points in the final minute of regulation on Tuesday night but came through with a wild rally with Andrew Funk’s three-pointer forcing overtime, but the Nittany Lions came up short in a competitive double overtime game in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Penn State lost its first true road game of the season, 101-94.

Three Penn State players scored at least 20 points in the high-scoring game. [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] led Penn State with 26 points scored. [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] had 23 points with eight assists and seven rebounds. And [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] ended the game with 23 points. It is the first time since 2006 that three players scored at least 20 points in the same game. Lundy also had a double-double with 12 rebounds.

Penn State’s three-point shooting struggled against the Tigers for much of the night, with Penn State hitting on just 11 of 36 three-point attempts. Lundy hit on four of his eight attempts, and Wynter connected on three of six.

Penn State led the Tigers by six points at halftime but Clemson didn’t take long to take a lead in the second half. Penn State is now 11-11 all-time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It was announced this week this will be the final season for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which means Penn State broke even in the conference-vs-conference challenge.

Penn State is now 6-2 this season, and 0-1 in true road games (2-2 away from home). As a program, Penn State is 0-5 against Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Penn State will begin Big Ten competition with its next game. The Nittany Lions will host Michigan State next Wednesday, December 7.

The Big Ten and ACC split all six games on the schedule on Tuesday night with Illinois, Maryland, and Iowa scoring wins for the Big Ten and Michigan and Wisconsin losing close games at home. The ACC leads the Big Ten 5-3 going into Wednesday’s final games of this year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Penn State tops Furman in Charleston Classic opener; Hokies up next

Jalen Pickett and Seth Lundy lead Penn State to Charleston Classic win over Furman

After starting the season with three wins at home, Penn State improved to 4-0 with a victory over Furman in the opening game of the 2022 Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic in Charleston, South Carolina. Penn State’s 73-68 win was highlighted by 20-point games from [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] and [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] as Penn State seized control in the first half and held off a second-half rally by the Paladins.

Furman’s big scoring threat, Mike Bothwell, got his scoring in as expected. Bothwell scored a game-high 26 points for Furman, and Tyrese Hughley contributed 15 points off the bench for the Paladins. But Penn State’s balanced scoring attack by Pickett and Lundy helped give Penn State the edge, and [autotag]Myles Dread[/autotag] adding nine points off the Penn State bench helped, with all of the scoring coming by way of three three-point shots.

Penn State once again hit double-digits for made three-pointers with 11, but Furman did win the battle on the glass by out-rebounding Penn State 40-32, which included a 14-7 advantage with offensive rebounds.

[autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] had seven points and three rebounds and three assists. [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag] was 2-of-8 on his three-point attempts.

Penn State will face Virginia Tech in the second round of the Charleston Classic on Friday. The Nittany Lions and Hokies will kick off the Friday schedule of the tournament at 12:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Virginia Tech defeated Old Dominion in the second game of the day on Thursday following Penn State’s win.

Jalen Pickett triple-double leads Penn State to win over Butler

Jalen Pickett had just the second triple-double in Penn State history in a win over Butler Monday night.

After somewhat cruising past the first two opponents of the season, Penn State men’s basketball faced a stiffer challenge Monday night in the Gavitt Tipoff Games from the Butler Bulldogs. But a historic night from [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] helped the Nittany Lions overcome some adversity on the court and improve to 3-0 at the Bryce Jordan Center with a 68-62 victory.

Pickett recorded a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. It is just the second triple-double in Penn State’s program history. The last Nittany Lion to record a triple-double was Calvin Booth in an NIT game against Dayton on March 16, 1998.

“He starts to do things as he starts to play in the post or off picks,” Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry said of Pickett’s play in his postgame press conference. “He’s adjusting as the game goes. There may be things he misses early on in the game, but he makes the switch pretty quickly after learning about it. He’s also really good at seeing the defense and trying to take advantage of the opportunity.”

Butler got a big effort from center Manny Bates, who had a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Four different Butler players scored in double figures, but the same was true for Penn State as well. In addition to Pickett’s big night, [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag], [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag], and [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] each scored in double figures in the win. Funk drained three three-pointers as Penn State hit on 10 of their 24 three-point shots for another game with at least 10 three-pointers made.

Penn State led by as many as 16 points after regaining control of the game in the second half, but Butler worked its way out of an 11-point hole in the first half to lead by two late in the first half. Penn State did manage to get to halftime with a lead though.

Gavitt Tipoff Games Update

Penn State’s win evened the Gavitt Tipoff Games between the Big Ten and the Big East. Monday’s doubleheader to kick off the week-long series of games between the two conferences actually began a little earlier in the night with DePaul handing Minnesota a loss in Minneapolis, 69-53. The series is now even at one win each going into Tuesday night.

Tuesday night features the next two games in the Gavitt Tipoff Games with Northwestern visiting Georgetown and Purdue hosting Marquette. Both games will air on FS1 with Georgetown and Northwestern first to tip at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Other Big Ten teams in action on Tuesday not participating in the event include Wisconsin (vs. Green Bay), Maryland (vs. Binghamton) and Michigan State (vs. Kentucky in the Champions Classic in Indianapolis).

Up Next

Penn State’s next game will take them away from the Bryce Jordan Center as they head south to participate in the Charleston Classic, beginning Thursday and running through Sunday. Penn State will face Furman in their first game in the tournament on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. ET.
