49ers find new starter to fill weakest position in NFL mock draft

The 49ers once again have a need at OT entering the draft.

The San Francisco 49ers were widely expected to use their first-round pick in the 2024 draft on an offensive tackle, but they forewent that choice and kicked the can down the road on addressing the biggest hole in their roster.

Instead of making an upgrade over right tackle Colton McKivitz, the 49ers picked wide receiver Ricky Pearsall at No. 31 overall. Then they took cornerback Renardo Green in Round 2 before finally selecting offensive lineman Dominick Puni in the third round.

Puni played OT in college, but moved to right guard with the 49ers where he has thrived. San Francisco didn’t do more to address the right tackle position in the draft, leaving McKivitz to duke it out with veterans Chris Hubbard and Brandon Parker in camp. McKivitz won out without any real competition from the two vets.

A new mock draft from Pro Football Focus has the 49ers making the offensive line selection they forewent a year ago. With the No. 17 pick, they select OT Cameron Williams out of the University of Texas:

Things have looked better along the 49ers’ offensive line as of late, but they should still monitor potential upgrades. Williams is just a one-year starter at right tackle for Texas this season, but the 6-foot-5, 335-pounder possesses rare movement skills, balance and length. San Francisco could view him as an upgrade over Colton McKivitz at right tackle.

While Williams may check the boxes for measurables and athleticism, his lack of experience may be a problem for a 49ers team that cares less about ceiling in its offensive lineman and more about their ability to step in and be effective right away.

Williams entered the 2024 season with just one start in his career, and he’s started all eight of Texas’s games this season. He’ll be sitting on something around 14 or 15 career starts by the end of the year.

Perhaps he shows enough in his time as a starter this season to give a team like the 49ers confidence he’s a surefire upgrade at RT. Whether they take an offensive lineman in the first-round remains to be seen, but it’s a relative certainty that OT will be their biggest position of need when the draft begins.

Mock draft watch: Surprise OT at No. 1 in offense-heavy first round

Mock draft watch: Surprise OT at No. 1 in offense-heavy first round in the latest mock from Daft on Draft

From time to time, we like to scan the mock draft landscape for something novel or different. We found just that in the projections from Daft on Draft, a side project of Browns Wire editor and longtime draft analyst Cory Kinnan.

After leading with the proclamation that he doesn’t like doing mock drafts, Kinnan proceeds to lay out a pretty interesting first round, one that breaks with some conventional thinking.

It starts at the top. With the first pick, the New England Patriots are projected to land Texas offensive tackle Cameron Williams. The precocious right tackle has a ton of physical tools but a lot of room for development, as Kinnan notes.

The nest two picks come from Colorado, with the Browns tabbing QB Shedeur Sanders and the Jaguars landing CB/WR Travis Hunter. They are each almost universally regarded as top-10 picks at this point. The Browns moving on from Deshaun Watson is a necessary evil in which Kinnan goes into good detail.

There is one other QB in the top 10, with Alabama’s Jalen Milroe heading to the Las Vegas Raiders. Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty goes to the Giants at No. 11, while Williams’ Texas running mate, Kelvin Banks, comes off at No. 14 to Seattle.

It’s always fun to see what other draft minds are thinking throughout the process. This one ends the first round with two tight ends from the Big Ten and a defensive tackle to the Minnesota Vikings at No. 32 overall.

Browns land a new bodyguard in new mock draft

Offensive tackle will remain a priority for the Browns to address in the draft.

In a new 2025 NFL mock draft, the Cleveland Browns land a new protector along the offensive line in Texas’ right tackle Cameron Williams.

The most recent mock draft is currently on NFL Draft on SI and has the Browns addressing the offensive line with the 17th overall pick in the draft. Among many explosive picks in the 2025 NFL mock draft, the one we are all paying attention to is who the Cleveland Browns are selecting.

The prime protector for Quinn Ewers and currently Arch Manning has been tremendous to start his season and is one of the cornerstone players for the nation’s top-ranked team. No matter who is at quarterback for the Longhorns, there is sure to be protection for their two-star gunslingers.

This would be a tremendous addition for the Browns after they have battled both tackle and quarterback injuries in the last few seasons. Assuring protection for your quarterback and All-Pro running back Nick Chubb is one of the main priorities in Cleveland. This would not only help immediately but assure protection for the future.

Longhorns tackle earns SEC Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week honors

On Monday, the Longhorns junior right tackle was named the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week

Following Texas’ first win of the season, star tackle Cameron Williams made history. On Monday, the Longhorns junior right tackle was named the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week. It is Williams’s first weekly career honor and the first weekly honor for a Longhorn by the SEC.

In his second carer start, Williams was the Longhorn’s highest-graded offensive lineman. Williams did not allow any sacks or QB pressures as the Longhorns rolled to a 52-0 win. He was a vital piece of an offense that recorded 545 total yards of offense, including 355 through the air.

Since making his collegiate debut, Williams has become a reliable player. During his three years as a Longhorn, the Texas native has appeared in 23 games. He was part of the 2023 Longhorns offensive line that was tabbed a Joe Moore Award semifinalist. In his first career start against Kansas State, he helped the offense record 230 rushing yards.

As the Longhorns look to improve to 2-0 this weekend, they will need Williams at his best. On Saturday, they are set to take on the defending national champions in Michigan, who beat Fresno State in their season opener. Entering week Two, Texas is ranked No.2, and Michigan is ranked No.10.

What could be a big season for Williams is already off to an impressive start.

Recap: Rutgers women’s basketball struggles mightily in loss at Michigan

Rutgers women’s basketball lost at Michigan this weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, Rutgers women’s basketball continued to struggle against Big Ten teams. The Scarlet Knights took on the Michigan Wolverines and could not get much going offensively in an 86-58 loss.

With the loss, Rutgers is now 7-19 (1-12 Big Ten).

Michigan had control of the game from the first whistle in this matchup. They outscored Rutgers 45-16 in the first half. While Rutgers played much better in the second half, they could not climb out of the early hole they dug themselves into.

Cameron Williams led the way offensively for Michigan with a team-high 23 points. She got help from Jordan Hobbs, who added 16 points and three rebounds to her resume.

While there were only a few positives for Rutgers to take from this game, Destiny Adams continued to be a scoring machine. The talented guard scored a team-high 15 points. She also shot an impressive 83.3 percent from the field and made her only three-point attempt.

As Rutgers dropped their 12th conference game, they struggled to stop Michigan close to the basket. The Wolverines scored 36 points in the paint and forced 15 turnovers. That helped Michigan build a lead they would not relinquish.

Following a disappointing loss, Rutgers will shift their focus to Minnesota. They face the Golden Gophers on February 13 at Jersey Mike’s Arena.

Rutgers women’s basketball looks to get back on track against Michigan

Rutgers women’s basketball is hoping to get back on track this weekend against Michigan.

After their first loss of the month against Maryland, Rutgers women’s basketball will have a shot at redemption against Michigan on Saturday. This matchup represents a great chance for Rutgers to end their road woes.

Rutgers are 7-18 (1-11 Big Ten) on the season. Michigan enters this game at 15-9 (6-6 Big Ten).

As Rutgers looks to record their second conference win of the season, they will have their hands full with Laila Phelia and Cameron Williams. Through 24 games, Phelia has set the tone offensively, averaging 16.1 points. Williams has been a force on the boards, averaging a team-leading five rebounds a game.

For Michigan, stopping Destiny Adams will be critical. She has been one of Rutgers’ best players offensively, averaging 15 points per game. Against Maryland on February 6, she reached the 20-point mark for the second time in her last three games.

Although Rutgers will not be favored in this game, they are taking on a Michigan team that has struggled lately. The Wolverines are 2-3 in their last five games. In that span, they are 0-3 when they score less than 70 points.

For Rutgers to pull off an upset, they must play a complete game. Against Maryland, they struggled to mount a comeback after getting off to a slow start. They will also need to take better care of the ball and stay out of foul trouble.

Illinois star 2024 wide receiver will visit Notre Dame this weekend

The Irish are getting an early visit with this rising star

The Irish are really turning up the recruiting heat for multiple classes. As the news pours in today with the arrival of 2023 five-star quarterback Dante Moore on campus there was another development that should not go unnoticed.

This afternoon 2024 wide receiver Cam Williams made an announcement that he will be heading east this coming weekend to visit Marcus Freeman and take a look around campus. I have known Williams since his freshman year in high school and knew that he was going to be a big time player as he continued to get older.

Williams has been taking visits to many of the major Midwest powers, recently visiting Wisconsin and Michigan.

Knowing this young man, I know first hand his work ethic, character and drive are top notch. Williams is going to be one of the best receiving prospects in his class and hopefully ends up in Blue and Gold.

Texas offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Kyle Flood has been named Big 12 recruiter of the year by both Rivals and 247Sports.

He was also mentioned among the best recruiters in the country by On3.

What On3 Says…

Texas signed arguably the best offensive line class ever, and Kyle Flood had a huge hand in it.

Campbell, the five-star offensive lineman from Arlington (Texas) Bowie, was a significant head-to-head recruiting win over rival Oklahoma. But that wasn’t the only major recruiting win on the offensive line for Flood.

Five-star offensive tackle Kelvin Banks, four-star offensive tackles Cameron Williams and Malik Agbo and four-star interior offensive linemen Neto Umeozulu, Cole Hutson and Malik Agbo were all recruited personally by Flood.

Banks’ flip from Oregon was an especially satisfying recruiting win for the Horns. And that alone might have been enough to his name on the list of top recruiters.

Flood put together the best offensive line class in the nation. Texas signed seven talented prospects in the class:

  • Five-star Devon Campbell
  • Five-star Kelvin Banks Jr
  • Four-star Neto Umeozulu
  • Four-star Malik Agbo
  • Four-star Cole Hutson
  • Three-star Cameron Williams
  • Three-star Conner Robertson

Texas could not afford to miss on many targets after only signing two linemen during last season’s transition class.

Campbell and Banks are two of the best offensive line prospects Texas has signed since 2000 while big Camerson Williams has an NFL frame that just needs to be developed.

Flood has flipped the outlook of one of the weakest positions on the Texas roster by signing one of the best offensive line hauls Texas has ever put together.
