Washington places Brandon Scherff on IR, calls up Cam Sims to active roster

Brandon Scherff will go on the three-week IR in Washington, and Cam Sims will take his place on the active roster.

Washington will be placing right guard Brandon Scherff on the injured reserve following the diagnosis of an MCL sprain on his right knee. Unlike in years past, though, Scherff will only be unavailable for three weeks, at which point he will be eligible to return tot he active roster.

In his place, Washington has decided to bring up WR Cam Sims, who was placed on the practice squad ahead of the season, but has been brought up for each of the two games so far this season. Sims has been a solid player on special teams, and even got a few snaps on offense this past week against the Arizona Cardinals.

Washington elevates WR Cam Sims from practice squad for Week 1 vs. Eagles

Wide receiver Cam Sims has been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s season opener vs. the Eagles.

As part of the rules of the Practice Squad, the Washington Football Team has elevated WR Cam Sims from the practice squad for Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, meaning that he will be eligible to play in the season opener.

Now that he is on the active roster, Cam Sims will be alongside Terry McLaurin, Steven Sims, Dontrelle Inman, Antonio Gandy-Golden, and Isaiah Wright on the WR depth chart. While Sims can definitely add some depth to the receiving corps, he will also have an opportunity to be useful on special teams should the team decide to use him on kick off or kick return.

Report: Washington releases WR Cam Sims during roster cut-down

Washington is releasing WR Cam Sims, who will likely be added to the practice squad if he isn’t picked from waivers.

Washington is letting WR Cam Sims go as part of the 53-man roster cut on Saturday, which comes as somewhat of a surprise move after they already released fellow receiver Trey Quinn earlier in the day.

Sims has been one of the bubble players throughout training camp, and it appears that he landed just on the outside of the final list. With him gone, Washington will likely keep Terry McLaurin, Steven Sims, Dontrell Inman, Antonio Gandy-Golden, and Isaiah Wright on the roster.

Don’t be surprised to see Sims stick around on the practice squad this season, though, and potentially be moved up at some point. The team obviously likes what he brings to the table, but just needed that roster spot somewhere else on the field.

WATCH: Cam Sims makes incredible leaping TD catch in back of end zone

Cam Sims came down with an incredibly acrobatic touchdown catch after leaping over the defense on Tuesday morning in practice.

Reports from training camp on Tuesday morning showed that WR Cam Sims had a pretty solid day, hauling in a number of passes and putting on a show. This highlight that was released by the Washington Football Team on Tuesday afternoon shows a bit of what he did, including this acrobatic catch at the back of the endzone, brought down for a touchdown.

In the video, Sims skies above the defense to get the ball, and comes down with enough room to tap two feet down and secure the TD. We remarked on Tuesday morning that Sims might be one of the players a little bit too close to the bubble watch for comfort in Washington, but if he continues to make plays like this, there is no doubt that he has a spot on this roster.

Does Cam Sims have a chance to fill WR void in Washington this season?

Cam Sims has been unable to find his footing in the NFL just yet, but the loss of Kelvin Harmon could give him the opportunity he needs.

The Washington Football Team seemingly has a number of options that they can utilize at the wide receiver position, but outside of Terry McLaurin, nobody seems confident on the depth chart or hierarchy of power and skill at the position.

While Kelvin Harmon was recently lost for the season with a torn ACL, many expect players like Steven Sims, Antonio Gandy-Golden, and Trey Quinn to step up into that void, as well as a potential free-agent signing that could help carry the load. But what about the guys that could be fighting for a roster spot? Particularly, what about Cam Sims?

Two years ago, Sims held the role that was occupied by Steven Sims in 2019, where he was one of the final players to make the roster before the season, and his standout performance in the preseason is part of what helped get him the job. A lackluster 2019 season for Cam left him without much to show for the season, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t reclaim his spot going forward. Judging by a recent video that’s circulating Twitter, he seems to be in pretty good form.

In his two year career, Sims has only played in 8 total games, with very little production to show for it. However, with a hole needing to be filled in Washington, there’s a chance that he could step up and assume a bigger role in the offense going forward.

Dwayne Haskins plans to take Redskins WR corps to Florida for offseason workouts

Dwayne Haskins will follow the time-tested Tom Brady path by taking his receivers on a vacation/workout trip this offseason.

One of the biggest things that a young quarterback can do is build trust with his receivers, and there’s no better way to do so than building a relationship with them.

Part of the reason why Dwayne Haskins and Terry McLaurin were so successful together in 2019 was the fact that they were already close by the time they had been drafted by the Redskins, as they played together at Ohio State University. Now, Haskins will look to further his relationship and connection with the rest of the receivers on the team as well, and he has a plan to make that happen this offseason.

A Florida workout vacation.

The Redskins VP of Player Personnel Kyle Smith stated on Tuesday that Haskins has shown great improvement so far in his first NFL offseason, and he’s looking to continue to grow as a player and a teammate. He will try to do this by taking his receiving corps down to Florida to spend some time together and gain more reps. We’ve seen veteran quarterbacks like Tom Brady do this a lot in the past, and it’s seemed to work pretty well.

There is not yet a specific time or a place that this will happen, as far as we know, but it is on the schedule. Come fall camp, we can likely expect to see McLaurin, Steven Sims, Kelvin Harmon, Cam Sims, and Trey Quinn all looking a bit tanner.

What’s next for former Alabama WR Cam Sims?

Cam Sims time with the Alabama football program came to a close following the 2017 season. He would then go on to be an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft.

The two-time CFP National Champion with the Crimson Tide found himself in a position to compete, not for a starting role with the team, but for a job.

The Washington Redskins picked him up and he has been with the team for two seasons now, though it has come with minimal playing time.

Sims had three targets in 2019 with the team, but was only able to reel in two of them for an underwhelming 27 yards.

Now, heading into the 2020 regular season, Washington is getting things started with a fresh head coach in Ron Rivera, a young Dwayne Haskins and a slew of talented receivers.

It may be a difficult challenge for Sims to compete with names like Trey Quinn, Kelvin Harmon and Terry McLaurin.

However he may not even get the opportunity to earn a spot.

Redskins.com’s Zach Selby states that Washington can “do whatever they want with Sims.”

The post goes on to explain that the team and the offense won’t really be affected by Sims’ presence or absence.

In my opinion, Sims could be a very important piece to maintaining offensive production with an extremely young team. His drive and determination to persevere, as he’s shown through his journey to the NFL, could make everybody around him better.

He just might shock the coaching staff and earn a spot on the field come Week 1.

Redskins promote Cam Sims from practice squad, hoping he can fill in for Paul Richardson

Sims will have his best opportunity yet to make a mark in the Washington offense with Paul Richardson out for Sunday’s game.

If you were keeping track of how many times an injury has forced the Washington Redskins to make a last-minute roster adjustment in order to be fully prepared for a Sunday game, you might have lost count by now.

The Redskins made another minor roster move on Saturday morning, but it has a chance to play big dividends going forward. Wide receiver Cam Sims was signed off of the practice squad once again and released linebacker Tanner Vallejo, who was one of their better special teams players.

The move was made in order to bolster the WR depth, as starter Paul Richardson will miss Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. Earlier this week, coach Bill Callahan spoke on his desire to get all of the receivers more active in the Redskins’ offense, and he specifically mentioned Sims as a major piece in that.

Since the start of the 2018 season, Simas has made a few trips between the 53-man roster and the practice squad, but with Richardson out this time, he might have his best shot yet at making an impression and sticking on the team.

Washington will look to get Terry McLaurin more active in the offense

The Redskins desperately need to find something that works on offense, and they think that moving McLaurin around on offense might help.

It sounds like you can expect to see much more of rookie wide receiver Terry McLaurin this weekend against the New York Jets.

You can probably expect to see more of all Redskins receivers for that matter.

When talking to the media on Thursday afternoon, Washington coach Bill Callahan talked about how the team went about trying to solve their offensive woes during the bye week, and one of the top solutions they came up with was getting the receivers more open in space downfield, allowing rookie QB Dwayne Haskins more options to pass to. Obviously, that includes McLaurin, but Callahan also made sure to note that he wants to see more production from Steven Sims Jr., Cam Sims, and Darvin Kidsy as well.

While the Jets defense is one of the best in the league against the run, their secondary is nothing to gloss over either. The Redskins offense will have their work cut out for them on Sunday, but maybe this new wrinkle can help them end the touchdown-less streak at long last.
