Steelers DT Cam Heyward on making excuses: ‘This game will humble you’

Cam Heyward won’t accept excuses for what happened on Sunday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are not a team that takes comfort in making excuses for their shortcomings. These players, with few exceptions, take personal responsibility for how this group performs and it starts with defensive tackle Cam Heyward.

When Heyward spoke to the media after Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, you could see the emotion in his body language and in how he spoke about letting his teammates down and how much it hurts him to let them down. Heyward is a true leader on this team and his interview Sunday night showed it.

The Steelers crumbled to the Ravens on Sunday. Even the defense, which had been so good for much of the season had no answers for the Baltimore rushing attack, even with reserves in there. This group was worn down after weeks of trying to carry this team and it showed.

Steelers DT Cam Heyward wins The Chief Award

There is no more professional player than Cam Heyward.

Every year, the members of the Pittsburgh chapter of the PWFA vote on which Pittsburgh Steelers play is the best example of a player who cooperates with the media in the most positive ways. This year’s winner of The Chief Award — named in honor of Art Rooney — is defensive tackle Cam Heyward.

Heyward has been with the Steelers for nine seasons and has always been the standard for professionalism and courtesy when it comes to interviews and working with the media. The Pittsburgh media also awarded linebacker Devin Bush with the Joe Greene Award as the team’s top rookie.

Steelers DT Cam Heyward understands the loss is bigger than the fight

The Steelers defense fell flat on Thursday night against the Browns.

Since Thursday night’s game, the headlines have been all about the fight at the end of the game and the ensuing discipline from it. But what got lost in all the hoopla was an embarrassing loss by the Steelers to the Cleveland Browns 21-7.

But defensive tackle Cam Heyward didn’t forget and he talked about it to the media on Monday.

“The most important thing is that we lost that game,” Heyward said on Monday. “I know that got overshadowed by a lot of things, but as a defense, we didn’t play well. We were on the field too much, and that’s our fault.”

“They drove the ball & had a lot of success. You’ve got to learn from that. I’m not going to hide from that. I know we didn’t play how we’ve been playing. But that just means you’ve got another week to step it up. The great thing about it is, we play them twice.”

It was a total shock to see a defense that had played so well for the previous four games play so poorly. No turnovers and only one sack were completely out of character for Pittsburgh.

This offense cannot produce enough points on its own to sustain if the defense isn’t playing its best. There are simply too many injuries on the offensive side of the football to consistently score points. Heyward is the leader on the Steelers’ defense and if there is anyone who can rally the defense this week against the Bengals it is him.
