Panthers release 2 offensive linemen on Tuesday

The Panthers have released offensive linemen Calvin Throckmorton and Deonte Brown.

After releasing tight end Jordan Matthews and safety Matthias Farley on Monday, the Carolina Panthers parted ways with two more players this afternoon.

As announced on Tuesday, the team has released offensive linemen Calvin Throckmorton and Deonte Brown.

Throckmorton played the first two seasons of his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints, where he made 20 starts over 31 games. After being waived during this summer’s final roster cuts, he was claimed by Carolina on Aug. 30, along with linebacker Claudin Cherelus and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison.

The 6-foot-5, 309-pounder started seven games for the Panthers this year, with four coming at right guard and three at left guard. Per Pro Football Focus, Throckmorton has allowed 16 pressures over 357 pass-blocking opportunities.

Brown, who was a member of the team’s practice squad, was a sixth-round pick of the Panthers from the 2021 draft. The University of Alabama product appeared in just three regular-season outings for the organization, all of which came during his rookie campaign.

Top takeaways from Panthers’ snap counts in Week 3 loss to Seahawks

Derrick Brown never logged more than 75 percent of defensive snaps in any of his three previous NFL seasons. He’s at 90 percent through three games in 2023.

The Carolina Panthers had injury added to insult on Sunday, as a handful of key players exited the noisy Week 3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. So, it’ll be a bit foggy while trying to get a gauge on the game’s snap counts.

But, here’s what we can deduce from the outing:

Top takeaways from Panthers’ snap counts in Week 2 loss to Saints

The Panthers let OLB Yetur Gross-Matos eat a bit more in Week 2.

Between navigating through a new infrastructure and dealing with a handful of key injuries, the Carolina Panthers have had quite the task in figuring out who to put on the field so far.

That learning process continued in Monday night’s loss to the New Orleans Saints, with these key takeaways from the game’s snap counts:

Best and worst PFF grades from Panthers’ Week 2 loss to Saints

According to PFF, Panthers CBs fell flat in their first game without Jaycee Horn this season.

Were this week’s Pro Football Focus grades as ugly as the game we got out of the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints last night?

Let’s take a look at the best and worst marks for the Panthers in their 20-17 loss:

Panthers OL Calvin Throckmorton could start against his former team in Week 2

With starting left guard Brady Christensen lost to an injury, Panthers OL Calvin Throckmorton could start against his former Saints team in Week 2:

Well that escalated quickly. There’s a chance that Calvin Throckmorton could start against his former New Orleans Saints teammates when they visit the Carolina Panthers on Monday night.

The Panthers lost starting left guard Brady Christensen to a biceps injury after their Week 1 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, with the team announcing Tuesday that he’ll go on injured reserve for at least the next four weeks. They were already shorthanded along the interior with veteran lineman Austin Corbett on injured reserve, meaning Throckmorton might be their best candidate to fill in at left guard (where he played 872 snaps for the Saints the last two years).

Carolina’s other options are not appealing. They could put backup center Cade Mays at left guard, but he primarily lined up on the right side in college and only logged a handful of snaps at right guard last year. The second-year pro doesn’t have much experience at that position.

If not Mays or Throckmorton, the Panthers would have to go with undrafted rookie Nash Jensen, who did start at left guard in college. But with another rookie starting at right guard in fourth-round pick Chandler Zavala, it’s not looking like a good matchup with a Saints defense that just bagged three sacks and two dozen quarterback pressures. The Saints and Panthers kick off on “Monday Night Football” Sept. 18 at 6:15 p.m. CT.

8 Panthers get new uniform numbers on Wednesday

Eight players on the Panthers’ active roster donned new digits on Wednesday.

While we were busy putting much of our attention on Brian Burns and his fellow team captains, quite a few Carolina Panthers debuted some new digits on Wednesday.

Here are the uniform number updates for eight of the active roster’s players:

Panthers claim 3 players off waivers on Wednesday

The Panthers claimed a trio of players off waivers following Tuesday’s roster cuts.

So, this is why we use the “initial” in initial 53-man rosters.

Less than 24 hours after gathering their first set of 53 players, the Carolina Panthers plucked three new names off waivers on Wednesday. Those fresh faces—who were all cut prior to Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline—include offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton, linebacker Claudin Cherelus and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison.

Throckmorton cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints in 2020. The University of Oregon product has appeared in 31 games over the past two seasons—with 12 starts at left guard, seven at right guard and one at left tackle.

Cherelus, who the Panthers saw a bit of at training camp, was just let go by the New York Jets. Another undrafted free agent, the 6-foot-2, 230-pounder was a standout defender at Alcorn State University.

Jamison, also an undrafted free agent, spent the offseason with the San Francisco 49ers. The 5-foot-9, 186-pounder also has experience as a return man, which may be something Carolina is still trying to figure out.

Panthers claim former Saints guard Calvin Throckmorton off waivers

The Panthers claimed former Saints guard Calvin Throckmorton off waivers. He’ll face his old team in Week 2:

If you can’t beat them, sign them. That’s the Carolina Panthers’ motto — they claimed former New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton on waivers Wednesday, per the daily NFL transactions wire. Throckmorton was waived Tuesday at the roster cuts deadline and now he’ll be playing against his former team as soon as Week 2.

He’s joining several former teammates in Carolina. This offseason the Panthers signed longtime Saints defensive tackle Shy Tuttle, backup quarterback Andy Dalton, and former Saints safety Vonn Bell as veteran free agents. That’s a lot of familiar faces.

Throckmorton was first signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon. He developed into a solid backup and played a lot of snaps at left guard in relief of Andrus Peat when the starter was injured at times during the last two seasons. It wasn’t likely he would clear waivers given his combination of age and experience, and now he’s playing for a division rival.

Saints waive third-year backup OL Calvin Throckmorton

The New Orleans Saints are waiving third-year backup Calvin Throckmorton, a versatile player who has logged nearly 1,400 snaps in their system:

This is a bit of a surprise — Calvin Throckmorton has been an important backup along the New Orleans Saints offensive line through his first two years in the league, but he didn’t make the cut for their roster in 2024. Saints News Network’s John Hendrix first reported news of him being waived.

The Saints almost undoubtedly want Throckmorton back on their practice squad, but it’s unlikely he’ll clear waivers. Few players with his combination of age (he just turned 27 on Aug. 16) and NFL game experience (he’s totaled 1,398 snaps) will be available, and offensive linemen are always valued in the league. Hopefully he stays in New Orleans, but don’t bet on it.

Offseason additions like fourth-round rookie draft pick Nick Saldiveri and the decision to move James Hurst to left guard, pushing Andrus Peat down the depth chart, made Throckmorton expendable. If the line plays better because of it, well, it’s worth moving on. But we’ll have to wait and see how that plays out.
