Browns assistant coach Callie Brownson throws out first pitch for the Guardians

The team’s assistant WR coach threw out Friday’s first pitch

On Friday night, Cleveland Browns assistant wide receiver coach Callie Brownson threw out the first pitch for the Guardians Pride Night game. Since joining the Browns as Kevin Stefanski’s Chief of Staff in 2020, Brownson has made NFL history on more than one occasion.

On November 29th, 2020, Brownson became the first woman to coach an NFL position group in a regular-season game, with Drew Petzing missing that week’s game. She would go on to fill in as the team’s passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach, with Chad O’Shea also missing a game.

Brownson’s NFL career began as a scout for the New York Jets in 2017. Last season, prior to the 2023 season, the team promoted Brownson to assistant wide receivers coach, a position she will still hold in the upcoming 2024 season.

The Browns will report for training camp in a little over a month on July 22nd and 23rd and head to The Greenbrier shortly after that.

Browns assistant WR coach Callie Brownson will coach WRs at the Senior Bowl

The Browns have a second coach slated to coach down in Mobile at the Senior Bowl.

Callie Brownson becomes the second member of the Cleveland Browns to be named to the Senior Bowl coaching staff.

First, it was secondary coach Ephraim Banda who was named as the defensive coordinator of the National squad, and now Brownson (who serves as the assistant wide receivers coach in Cleveland) will coach the National wide receivers at the Senior Bowl in February.

This is the first offseason step toward the 2024 NFL draft and officially kicks us off into draft season.

Among those that Brownson will coach include former Kent State to North Carolina transfer Tez Walker, YAC specialist Malachi Corley from Western Kentucky, and Brenden Rice (the son of Jerry Rice).

Will the Browns end up selecting one of these receivers they will get a closer look at while down in Mobile?

The Cleveland Browns will have a coach participating in the Spring League as part of the NFL Coach Accelerator Program. Assistant wide receivers coach Callie Brownson will represent the Browns. What is the purpose of this program? Here is what the NFL says:

“The Coach Accelerator aims to increase exposure between owners, executives, and diverse coaching talent, providing ample opportunity to develop and build upon their relationships. In a change to the nomination process this year, clubs were able to nominate those from outside of their organization…

In addition to networking, further development of the participants is a critical component of the accelerator, with curated content sessions scheduled that will further engage each participant on the advancement of their executive leadership skills and business acumen.”

Brownson has been with the Browns since the 2020 season and has also been the head coach of the gold medal-winning Team USA women’s football team. Brownson has climbed the latter with the Browns, starting as the chief of staff to head coach Kevin Stefanski.

Browns continue to promote diversity with Girls Flag Football Clinic

The team continues to focus on diversity and inclusion.

Andrew Berry and the Cleveland Browns since he arrived have focused on promoting diversity and inclusion. They have done so on both the coaching side as well as the front office. Assistant wide receivers coach Callie Brownson helped continue the team’s mission for inclusion on Sunday when the team hosted a girl’s flag football clinic.

Coach Brownson has already left her mark on the sport after becoming the first woman to coach an NFL position in a regular season game in 2020 filling in for Drew Petzing. The team is sure to continue to focus on diversity and inclusion and it’s something that is sorely needed in the NFL.

Browns announce 8 changes to their coaching staff

The Browns announce 8 changes to their staff.

The Cleveland Browns are getting set for the NFL Scouting Combine, and they have finalized eight changes to their staff before hitting the road for Indianapolis, Indiana. The hire of Bill Musgrave as a Senior Offensive Assistant has been the headlining hire over the past couple of days, but there is also still a vacancy at passing game coordinator on the defensive side of the ball.

Outside of the hiring of Musgrave, here are seven other moves the Browns have finalized as we get set for the start of the new league year, the combine, and for some new faces to join the roster in free agency.

Browns plan to have Mike Priefer fill in for Kevin Stefanski as head coach

The Browns have experience with Priefer filling in for Stefanski in a critical game

The sobering news is that Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has tested positive for COVID-19 and could miss the critical Week 15 home date with the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday. The upshot is that the Browns do have some experience in handling this exact scenario and also have a plan of attack in place.

As was the case when Stefanski missed the playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers last season due to a positive COVID-19 test, Browns special teams coordinator Mike Priefer will handle the head coaching duties. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will assume all playcalling responsibility during the game.

Stefanski’s chief of staff, Callie Brownson, will have an increased role in coaching on the sidelines on Saturday as well. Running backs coach Ryan Cordell has also tested positive for COVID-19. Brownson has served as an interim position coach before, taking over for TE coach Drew Petzing last season when his wife gave birth. Brownson was the first woman to ever assume coaching duties for an NFL regular-season game. She also replaced WR coach Chad O’Shea for the playoff game against Pittsburgh.

Browns Chief of Staff Callie Brownson charged with drunken driving

Cleveland Browns Chief of Staff Callie Brownson was charged with drunken driving in Brunswick in late May according to a new report.

Cleveland Browns Chief of Staff Callie Brownson was charged with drunken driving according to a new report.

According to the report, Brownson’s blood alcohol content was over twice the legal limit at the time she was stopped just after midnight on May 27th. Brownson was also driving 55 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone.

Brownson was scheduled to be in court on Tuesday, June 8th related to the incident.

As Kevin Stefanski’s Chief of Staff, Brownson has a variety of roles for the team and was given responsibilities related to coaching tight ends, wide receivers, and offensive line during the 2020 season due to a number of coaches being out at different times.

Brownson was the first woman to ever be a position coach in the NFL when she took over for Drew Petzing who missed the game due to his wife having their child.

Brownson could face discipline from the league or the team.

The Browns are in the midst of their final week of offseason training activities this week. Practice will be open to media members on Wednesday with Stefanski expected to answer questions. It will be interesting if the coach decides to address it at this time or pushes questions off until more information is available.

Browns owner Dee Haslam, GM Andrew Berry featured at NFL’s Women’s Careers in Football forum

The Browns have been trailblazers at providing opportunities for women in the NFL

Cleveland Browns owner Dee Haslam and GM Andrew Berry are among the featured speakers at the fifth annual Women’s Careers in Football forum, sponsored by the NFL. It’s an appropriate choice to highlight Haslam, who owns the team with her husband, Jimmy, and Berry in their efforts to create real potential for women in football.

The Browns have been at the forefront of providing capable women opportunities in roles traditionally reserved for men. The team hired Callie Brownson as head coach Kevin Stefanski’s chief of staff last offseason, and Brownson became the first woman to actively coach a position group in an NFL game when she filled in for TE coach Drew Petzing in Week 12. Brownson also coached the wide receivers in Week 17.

From the NFL’s press release,

The NFL will host the fifth annual Women’s Careers in Football Forum virtually Feb. 24-25 as part of its ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Forum will connect 40 women, 75% of whom are women of color, with leaders in professional football to help those women network and build relationships in the areas of coaching, scouting and football operations.

This year’s conference will be held online only due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

OL coach Bill Callahan, assistant Scott Peters will miss Steelers game

The Browns COVID-19 issues continue

Already down wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Chad O’Shea, the Cleveland Browns will also face the Pittsburgh Steelers without two more offensive assistants.

Offensive line coach Bill Callahan and assistant OL coach Scott Peters have both been identified as close contacts to a positive COVID-19 test via contact tracing. Neither Callahan nor Peters will be on the Browns sideline on Sunday as a result.

It’s a major pinch for a unit already scrambling to get enough healthy bodies to face Pittsburgh. Right guard Wyatt Teller is questionable with an ankle injury that has kept him out of the last two games. His primary backup, Chris Hubbard, is on injured reserve. The next man up, rookie Nick Harris, has been ruled out for Week 17 with a knee injury of his own.

The Browns signed Blake Hance off the Jets practice squad and promoted tackle Alex Taylor and guard Cordel Igwuagwu from their own practice squad to fill out the roster. Hance played under Callahan in Washington in 2019 when both were part of the Football Team.

Chief of staff Callie Brownson is filling in for O’Shea, who tested positive for COVID-19 during the week.

Browns’ Callie Brownson to become 1st woman to coach an NFL position group in game

The Cleveland Browns’ Callie Brownson is going to make NFL history against the Jaguars

Sarah Fuller of Vanderbilt has company in firsts for women and football this weekend.

The Cleveland Browns’ TE coach Drew Petzing left the team to be with his wife as she gave birth to their first child. So, Callie Brownson, the Browns’ chief of staff, will become the first woman to coach an NFL position group in a regular-season game as she handles the tight ends for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Head Coach Kevin Stefanski is a big supporter of the work Brownson has done for the Browns.

“That’s our job to adjust as coaches and to see who’s available to us and put a game plan together to go win,” Stefanski said. “I would go back to I have some really, really good coaches working with me. On a day like this when you’re trying to get the schedule and you’re trying to add extra meetings, Callie is putting everything together for us. She is the star of the day and able to put that together. That’s where I’m lucky to have really good coaches around me.”

Brownson celebrated Fuller’s accomplishment before the soccer goalkeeper kicked off in Vanderbilt’s game with Missouri on Saturday.
