6 takeaways from the Jets’ Week 14 loss to the Saints

The Jets’ defense showed up to play against the Saints, but their offense was missing in action in a 30-9 loss. Takeaways from Week 14:

Jeff Ulbrich’s defense sold the Jets short in Week 13. In Week 14, it was Zach Wilson and Mike LaFleur’s depleted offense that cost New York a chance to win.

The Jets held the Saints to a second-quarter touchdown, a late fourth-quarter score and a meaningless garbage time rushing touchdown by Taysom Hill, but their offense never found the end zone and settled for three field goals in a 30-9 loss to New Orleans. The Jets’ 10th loss of the season officially eliminated them playoff contention.

Here are six takeaways from Gang Green’s second straight defeat.

Foley Fatukasi, C.J. Mosley among unsung 6 unsung heroes in Jets’ win over Texans

Players like Foley Fatukasi and C.J. Mosley didn’t necessarily star against the Texans, but they were among the unsung heroes in Week 12.

The Jets broke back into the win column for the first time in nearly a month in Week 12, downing the Texans by a final score of 21-14.

New York’s offensive performance against Houston was not pretty, but it did enough to win with Jeff Ulbrich’s defense stepping up and slowing down Tyrod Taylor and company. The Texans didn’t score in the second half and totaled just 202 yards of offense, most of which came over the first 30 minutes of play.

Players on both sides of the ball shined for the Jets, though not everyone received equal credit for fending off a Texans team that upset the AFC South-leading Titans the previous weekend. Here, we’ll take a look at some unsung heroes who flew under the radar in New York’s Week 12 win.

Jets LB Quincy Williams deserves to be full-time starter

Quincy Williams has proven to be one of the more reliable linebackers on the Jets this season.

Quincy Williams proved in Week 11 that he deserves to be a full-time starter after posting a team-high, game-high and career-high 15 combined tackles.

The Jets linebacker’s top skillset has always been his sideline-to-sideline speed, and he showed it off against the Dolphins. Williams reached a top speed of 18 mph, according to NextGen Stats, and covered 939 total yards while running 468 yards.

“One of his superpowers is speed,” Robert Saleh said Friday. “He’s one of the faster linebackers in football if you look at his GPS numbers.”

That speed helped Williams excel in the Jets’ nickel defense with only two linebackers on the field last weekend. He played 92 percent of his 63 snaps in this scheme, tallying 14 stops and nine solo tackles.

Week 11 wasn’t an outlier, either. Williams tallied 12 combined tackles with 10 solo stops during the Jets’ Week 4 win over the Titans. On the season, Williams ranks first on the team in tackles for a loss (7) and second behind C.J. Mosley in combined tackles (54). He’s also recorded one sack.

Wiliams has played well in coverage, too. He’s allowed a 61.3 completion percentage when targeted and just 19 receptions, 140 yards and no touchdowns. Those marks are top-five on the team. Williams also allows just a three-yard average depth of target and a 72 quarterback rating when targeted.

The Jets don’t have much clarity at the linebacker spot behind Mosley, who’s struggled in his own right. Free agent acquisition Jarrad Davis looks like a poor signing, Blake Cashman is injury-prone, and rookies Jamien Sherwood and Hamsah Nasirildeen have missed time as well.

Williams, however, looks like New York’s second-best player at the position. The younger brother of Jets star Quinnen Williams, Quincy admitted to playing with a chip on his shoulder as soon as he entered the league with Jacksonville in 2019. A few years later, he’s playing like a deserving starter.

“He’s gotten a lot better since the first day he arrived here,” Saleh said of the post-training camp pickup. “It’s just a matter of continuing to stack up good days.”

Jets defenders, Robert Saleh react to latest porous performance

The Jets have allowed 145 points in their last four games. What is it going to take for New York’s defense to right the ship?

The Jets have not been able to stop a nosebleed for the past month.

New York has allowed 175 points in its last four games and at least 45 points in three of its last four games. That’s after a Bills offense that mustered just nine points against the Jaguars in Week 9 came to MetLife Stadium and scored 45 points to go along with 489 yards of offense on Sunday. Josh Allen threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns, while the Jets’ secondary had no answer for Stefon Diggs, who finished with eight catches for 162 yards and a touchdown.

“We’re trying to do things the right way and see where we can help our guys out,” Robert Saleh said after New York’s seventh loss. “Obviously, it’s not good enough. It always starts with me. We got eight games left. We have to figure it out.”

The Bills got it done through the air and on the ground, with Allen connecting with eight different pass-catchers. Explosive plays were the name of the game for Buffalo through the air, as Diggs averaged 20.3 yards per catch, while Gabriel Davis caught three passes for 105 yards. Emmanuel Sanders averaged 13.5 yards per catch on his two receptions for 27 yards, while Dawson Knox caught a 17-yard pass.

Devin Singletary, Matt Brieda and Zach Moss proved to be an effective trio out of the backfield. Singletary rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown and Moss chipped in 27 yards and a score, but it was Brieda who had the best game of them all with 28 rushing yards and a touchdown. He added three catches for 22 yards and a touchdown.

“In the simplest of terms, lack of execution,” Sheldon Rankins said. “Whether it be guys not understanding assignments or just not getting to a place when they need to a second too late or whatever. At the end of the day, lack of execution. It showed up over and over and we’re continuing to work to fix it.”

The Jets benefit from a softer matchup when the Dolphins come to MetLife Stadium next weekend. Miami just upset the Ravens on Thursday Night Football, but its offense has been among the worst in football this season. That could serve as a reprieve for Jeff Ulbrich’s unit after weeks of playing high-powered offenses that it simply does not have the talent to keep up with.

“When things aren’t going right, people start looking for the easy way out or an out,” C.J. Mosley said. “As long as I’m here and I have the C on my chest, I can’t let that happen. If players start to see that or we start to see that, we gotta make sure we call each other out, ’cause we all have a job here. We all came here for a certain reason and when you start talking about wins and losses, the big picture can kind of get lost.”

7 reasons why the Jets defense is playing so poorly

The Jets’ defensive issues are plentiful, from inexperience to injuries to lack of a pass rush. Let’s break down why the unit has played far below expectations:

The Jets defense entered the 2021 season with promise with Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich at the helm, but the unit hasn’t lived up to expectations.

Most recently, New York’s defense decided to skip Thursday’s 45-30 loss to the Colts, or so it seemed. It was the second time in three games that a team embarrassed the Jets defense, and it’s not like the unit has been much better in most of New York’s other outings.

There are a lot of reasons for the defensive struggles, but the Jets have been beaten all over the field. Teams have crushed them through the air and on the ground, and the defense is on pace to allow the most points in franchise history.

Here, we’ll dive into why the defense has played so poorly during the Jets’ 2-6 start.

4 Jets the Colts must game plan for in Week 9

These Jets players must be in the game plan for the Colts in Week 9.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-5) have their first prime-time game at Lucas Oil Stadium since 2017, hosting the New York Jets (2-5) in a Thursday night matchup.

The Colts are coming off a tough loss at home to the Tennessee Titans, while the Jets are flying high after a huge win against the Bengals.

7 takeaways from Joe Douglas’ trade deadline press conference

Jets GM Joe Douglas spoke on a few subjects following the NFL trade deadline. Here’s a look at what you may have missed:

Joe Douglas’ third trade deadline as Jets general manager came and went without much action.

Despite having multiple movabale players, the 2-5 Jets were low-end buyers. They sent a sixth-round pick to the Eagles for Joe Flacco and traded Daniel Brown to the Chiefs for Laurent Duvernay-Tardif.

Following the 4 p.m. deadline, Douglas spoke about the trades and the state of New York’s roster. He touched on a couple of key storylines that’ll play out as the season progresses, including those involving Marcus Maye, Mike White, Zach Wilson and Denzel Mims.

Below are seven takeaways from Douglas’ post-trade deadline press conference.

5 takeaways from the Jets’ thrilling Week 8 win over the Bengals

Mike White’s 400-yard performance and late-game heroics were enough for the Jets to get back in the win column. Takeaways from the triumph:

Not many people gave the Jets a chance to give the Bengals a run for their money after New York’s 41-point loss to the Patriots last weekend — and understandably so.

Instead of rolling over and giving in after the embarrassment suffered in Foxborough with a surging Cincinnati team in town, the Jets bounced back and fought in Week 8. Mike White set the tone early by leading New York to its first first-quarter touchdown of the season and made countless clutch throws late in the game to get the Jets back in the win column with a thrilling 34-31 triumph.

It looked like Gang Green was going to fall short when it went down 31-20 on a Joe Burrow touchdown pass to Tyler Boyd with 7:29 remaining. White hit Ty Johnson for a score with 4:36 left to keep New York alive, though, and then Shaq Lawson delivered with an interception to give the Jets the ball deep in Bengals territory.

White took advantage, hitting ex-Bengal Tyler Kroft on a go-ahead, 13-yard touchdown pass. White then caught a two-point conversion from Jamison Crowder on Mike LaFleur’s version of the “Philly Special.” New York’s defense stood tall over the final 3:45 and White sealed the game with a quarterback sneak on 3rd-and-1 south of the two-minute warning.

Give the Jets credit for even coming to play in Week 8, let alone winning. Recent versions of Gang Green would have rolled over after the loss it suffered to the Patriots.

Here are some other takeaways from New York’s thrilling second win of the season.

Bengals vs. Jets inactives: Corey Davis officially out, C.J. Mosley returns for New York

Corey Davis will not play against the Bengals due to a hip flexor injury, while C.J. Mosley returns after missing last week.

The Jets will be without their No. 1 wide receiver when they take on the upstart Bengals on Sunday afternoon, as Corey Davis is officially inactive.

Davis suffered a hip flexor injury in practice on Thursday, immediately placing his status for Week 9 in doubt and ultimately forcing him to the sideline for the first time in his Jets career. Davis is New York’s leading receiver with 24 catches for 349 yards and four touchdowns in six games.

Denzel Mims is primed to take on an increased role on the outside with Davis out. Mims has been scarcely used this season due to a lack of fit in Mike LaFleur’s west coast offense, catching just four passes for 79 yards in three games.

C.J. Mosley is active for the Jets after missing last weekend’s 41-point loss to the Patriots with a hamstring injury. New York missed Mosely in the middle of its defense dearly, as New England’s running backs rushed for 127 yards and four touchdowns. Mosley’s return bolsters a Jets linebacker room recently ravaged by injuries. Jarrad Davis is also set to make his season debut after suffering an injury during the preseason.

The Bengals come to MetLife Stadium mostly healthy, as all of their inactives are reserve players.

Bengals vs. Jets Week 8 injury report: 10 players out or questionable

LB C.J. Mosley headlines the Jets’ list of questionable players before Sunday’s matchup with the Bengals.

As expected, Jets WR Corey Davis (hip) is doubtful for Gang Green’s Week 8 matchup with the Bengals. However, another 10 players are out or questionable between the two teams.

New York will be without RB Tevin Coleman (hamstring), TE/FB Trevon Wesco (knee), DL Bryce Huff (back) and QB Zach Wilson (knee). QB Joe Flacco, who the Jets traded for earlier this week, will also be inactive, though he’s not injured. Josh Johnson will be Mike White’s backup.

S Ashtyn Davis (shoulder), TE Tyler Kroft (back), DL Shaq Lawson (wrist) and LB C.J. Mosley (hamstring) are all questionable. Mosley is expected to play, as is fellow LB Jarrad Davis. Davis will make his Jets debut following a summer ankle injury.

The Bengals will be without HB Chris Evans (hamstring). WR Auden Tate (thigh) is questionable.
