Bye week breakdown: Taking a look at Patrick Mahomes’ 2023 season so far

Take a look at what #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has done during the 2023 season as Kansas City takes its bye week.

The Kansas City Chiefs won’t play in Week 10 after taking down the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany last Sunday. The Chiefs are taking a much-needed break for their bye midway through the 2023 season, and with eight games remaining on Kansas City’s schedule, it is time to take stock of what the team has accomplished and where they are headed.

Patrick Mahomes is, without question, the single most important factor in the Chiefs’ chances to defend their Super Bowl title. The 2023 season hasn’t been his best, but the reigning MVP should be expected to pick up his pace and get back into championship form over the next eight weeks.

Take a look at the statistics Mahomes has put up through nine games and the pace he has established heading into the home stretch of Kansas City’s Super Bowl defense campaign:

The Kansas City Chiefs have been an AFC powerhouse through nine weeks of the 2023 season and should be considered the conference’s top team heading into Week 10.

After a resounding win over the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany last week, Kansas City is riding high ahead of its looming Super Bowl LVII rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11.

The quants at Pro Football Focus have followed the Chiefs through each of their nine games this season and have graded each player on the team’s offense and defense. With more than half of the 2023 season behind it, Kansas City has seen some players rise and fall over the course of the first part of its schedule.

While Pro Football Focus’ assessments of player performance aren’t empirically infallible, they serve to give fans a good idea of how each athlete has performed so far.

Check out how every player on the Chiefs’ offense has fared to this point in the season:

After early-season struggles, Sean Payton says Broncos are a better team ‘in a lot of ways’

The Broncos have shown significant improvement since their 0-3 start. “You can see that in a lot of ways,” coach Sean Payton said.

The Denver Broncos are 3-5, but they might be a better team than their record suggests halfway through the season.

“I feel like we’re a better team today than we were four or five weeks ago. You can see that in a lot of ways,” Payton said during a conference call on Monday.

So, what has changed since the team’s 0-3 start?

“I think we’re defending the run better, No. 1,” Payton said. “I think our red zone defense has been much improved. I think offensively, we’ve been more efficient running the ball. We had better red zone numbers offensively last week.

“In the kicking game, week-to-week we’re winning most of those battles, which means a lot. The way we’re returning right now — our punt returns, our kick returns — we’re doing a number of the things that are necessary to win games that I don’t think we were doing nearly as well at the start of the season.”

The Broncos won back-to-back games going into their bye. Now, coming out of the break, Denver will have consecutive games in prime time. First, the Broncos will face the Buffalo Bills on the road on Monday Night Football. After that, Denver will host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football. The next two weeks will be crucial for the team’s 2023 season.

“[O]verall, from an overview as a team, I think we’re a lot further down the road, and because of that, you get that much more invested and recognize the next opportunity at hand,” Payton said. “We’re going to play a national TV game [next Monday] and then another national TV game the following Sunday night. Those will both be important games for us as a team.”

49ers have been dominant after bye week under Kyle Shanahan

The #49ers have been dominant after the bye week with Kyle Shanahan as their head coach. A season-by-season look:

The 49ers couldn’t have gone into their bye week in much worse shape. They were banged up and struggling with three consecutive losses after a 5-0 start. To make matters worse, they had similar issues in all three defeats with their run game struggling and their defense failing to affect the quarterback and get key stops.

A week off should help kickstart a turnaround, and history is on their side in a quest to regain the form they had to start the year.

Under head coach Kyle Shanahan the 49ers have almost always been better after the bye than before, accumulating a 16-30 record (.347 winning percentage) before the break, and a 36-16 record (.692 winning percentage) after it.

Here’s how they’ve looked before and after the bye week in each season under Shanahan:[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”dW5kZWZpbmVk”][/anyclip-media]

Denver Broncos 2023 Schedule

The Broncos have a bye this week. After the break, the Broncos will have nine games to attempt to get into the playoff hunt.

The Denver Broncos will not play today as they have a bye in Week 9.

The Broncos are set to travel 19,930 miles this season and face the 12th-hardest strength of schedule in the league. Before any flexes, Denver’s initial schedule includes four prime-time games.

The Broncos will play nine games at their home Empower Field at Mile High Stadium this year and eight games on the road. Because the league has an unbalanced 17-game schedule, the NFC and AFC rotate between having an extra home game. This year, the AFC gets a ninth home game.

Denver quarterback Russell Wilson will aim to bounce back this fall after a disappointing first season with the Broncos in 2022. Wilson should be helped by the arrival of new head coach Sean Payton, a QB guru.

Sean Payton followed Andy Reid’s lead for bye week success

Sean Payton was 0-3 after bye weeks before speaking with Andy Reid. After implementing Reid’s advice, Payton went 9-3 after bye weeks.

The Denver Broncos are on a bye this week and coach Sean Payton has utilized an approach borrowed from Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who is now a division rival.

Including the playoffs, Reid has an all-time record of 27-4 following a bye week. Clearly, he’s doing something right.

Payton struggled coming out of bye weeks in his early years with the New Orleans Saints, so he reached out to Reid, a coach with a proven record.

“Our record after the bye was like, gosh,” Payton recalled. “Andy Reid was in Philadelphia, and I called Andy up. I said, ‘What are you doing?’ Andy was like 9-0 after the bye. Andy said, ‘Look, I get them out of here after Monday, and if they win the game, sometimes I don’t even have them come in Monday.’ I said, ‘What about the coaches?’ He said, ‘I do the same thing.’ We started doing that in New Orleans and started having some success.

“Our guys are all in here today [Oct. 30], and we’re meeting on the game and watching film of the game. They’ll have a good break here. Everyone will be back on Monday [Nov. 6]. We’ll have a bonus prep day Tuesday because we’re playing on Monday night. The unusual part of next week for you and everyone will be Wednesday is the day off, which is like a Tuesday, then just do the math going forward. To your question, we looked at who was doing a good job with it. Andy was the one that kind of really told me what he was doing, so I’ve implemented that since.”

After starting his time with the Saints 0-3 after byes, Payton went on to go 10-3 in his next 13 post-bye games in New Orleans. Implementing what he learned from Reid must have paid off, and Payton will look to put it to use in Denver. After their bye, the Broncos will go on the road to face the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 10.

Baron Browning says Broncos are focused on going 1-0 after bye

“This week we went 1-0 so when we come back from the bye week, we are just going to try and go 1-0,” Broncos OLB Baron Browning said.

After a big upset win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8, the Denver Broncos immediately went into their bye week.

Would it have been better to have a game the following week to keep up the momentum they established on Sunday?

“I’m not ever going to question a bye week,” outside linebacker Baron Browning said. “Any time we get some downtime, just a mental break really quick in the middle of the season and get back together, that’s a blessing.”

The Broncos are now 3-5 and facing an uphill climb to get back into the postseason hunt. Browning said the team will take it one game at a time.

“I feel like each week we are just trying to go 1-0,” Browning said. “We don’t even think about our record. This week we went 1-0 so when we come back from the bye week, we are just going to try and go 1-0.”

Browning, 24, totaled four tackles, three quarterback hits, two sacks and a forced fumble against the Chiefs last week. He’ll look to continue that productive pace in the second half of the season once Denver returns from its bye in Week 10.

Russell Wilson says bye came at a good time for the Broncos

“We’ll be ready to go.” The Broncos will rest up this week and then attempt to get back into the playoff hunt after the bye.

The Denver Broncos have a bye this week after shocking the Kansas City Chiefs 24-9 on Sunday.

Denver is 3-5 following that win and well outside the playoff picture, but the upset victory over their division rival gives the Broncos positive momentum going into the break.

Denver quarterback Russell Wilson is confident the team will be refreshed and recharged for the second half of the season after the bye.

“I think that you always want to keep that momentum,” Wilson said when asked if he’d rather play the week following a big win instead of going into the bye. “We’re going to keep it through the bye week — going to stay focused on what we can do.

“It’s good to catch it right here for us because we feel like we’re climbing at the right time. I think to get rested up mentally, physically, emotionally [and] spiritually, [and] being ready to get going for this next stretch is going to be really key. We have a lot of good, great football teams ahead of us. We know how great we can be. We showed that today and we’ll be ready to go.”

The Broncos will have a big test immediately after the bye as they are set to go on the road to face the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 10. After that, the schedule gets a little easier, at least on paper.

Denver will have a lot of work to do to get back into the playoff hunt. The bye should help them regroup ahead of that daunting task.

Where the Lions rank in PFF season grades at the bye week

Where the Detroit Lions rank in PFF metric season grades at the bye week

Week 9 marks the bye week for the Detroit Lions. It’s also the halfway point (kind of) for the season for the 6-2 Lions. It make for a good time to check in on where Dan Campbell’s Lions rank in all the various team categories at Pro Football Focus.

PFF isn’t gospel, but it’s a very useful tool to compare how teams are faring relative to other teams in things like run blocking, tackling, receiving and special teams. Overall, Detroit is looking pretty darn good across the board.

Mike McGlinchey says Broncos beating Chiefs was ‘a win that can change an organization’

“That’s a win that’s going to make us believers,” Broncos OT Mike McGlinchey said. “It’s a win that can change an organization.”

The Denver Broncos had a losing culture in recent years.

After winning Super Bowl 50, the Broncos missed the playoffs in seven straight seasons following quarterback Peyton Manning’s retirement. During that time, Denver lost 16 straight games to the Kansas City Chiefs.

That losing streak was finally snapped on Sunday when the Broncos upset the Chiefs 24-9 at home. It was the kind of win that can turn around not just a season, but the direction of the entire franchise.

“It feels so good for the guys that have been here and that have fought tooth and nail to keep this place afloat,” offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey said. “Justin Simmons, Garrett Bolles, Tim Patrick, Courtland Sutton – guys that have been here for such a long time and put their heart and soul into this organization. To come out and beat these guys, the defending world champs and number one team in the AFC. That’s a huge win. That’s a win that’s going to make us believers. It’s a win that can change an organization.”

Sunday might have been the first step in the process of getting the franchise back on track. Denver coach Sean Payton is now 1-1 against the Chiefs since taking charge of the Broncos, and he’s now tasked with getting a 3-5 team back into the playoff hunt. McGlinchey seems to believe the team is now trending in the right direction.
