Buffalo Sabres at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Buffalo Sabres at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (7-3-0) and Carolina Hurricanes (7-2-1) meet Friday at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+/Hulu). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Sabres vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Sabres have been an offensive powerhouse during their 3-game win streak. They topped the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins by a combined score of 18-9 and covered the puck line in the past 2 outings. To no one’s surprise, the Over is 3-0 during the run.

The Hurricanes played a seesaw affair on the road against the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday, eventually winning 4-3 in a shootout.

This will be the 2nd back-to-back situation of the season for the Canes. They won 4-3 in OT at the Philadelphia Flyers Oct. 29 after getting demolished by the New York Islanders in the front end of the set in their first back-to-back.

Sabres at Hurricanes projected goalies

Craig Anderson (3-0-0, 1.66 GAA, .946 SV%) vs. Antti Raanta (2-0-1, 2.23 GAA, .913 SV%)

The 41-year-old veteran Anderson is reinventing himself in western New York after a few dismal years from 2017-20 in Ottawa. He is looking like the goaltender he was in the prime of his career back in the early 2010s.

Raanta is technically the backup in Raleigh, but he is more of a 1A option to Frederik Andersen. He can easily be a starter for most teams in the NHL and combined with Andersen to win the Jennings trophy in 2021-22 after allowing a league-low 202 goals.

Raanta is off to a tremendous start this season, too, allowing 3 or fewer goals in each of his 3 outings. This will be his first start of the season in front of the home fans.

Sabres at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Sabres 2

Moneyline

The Hurricanes (-200) have a quick turnaround after an emotionally draining game in Tampa, and the Sabres have been playing very good hockey. This is a dangerous spot to bet the favourite, especially at 2 times your potential return.

PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The HURRICANES -1.5 (+115) are a better value on the puck line, although the Sabres have been skating with their hair on fire lately, scoring goals at will. This won’t be easy, and likely will come down to an empty-net goal late to tip the scales in your favor.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-105) is the play based on the outstanding play of both Anderson and Raanta.

These goalies are going to see a lot of rubber headed their way, as the Canes average 38.1 shots on goal (SOG) per game, while the Sabres are good for 33.1 SOG per outing. However, while there will be plenty of shots, expect both goalies to be equal to the task, keeping this game just under the total.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres odds and lines, with NHL expert picks and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (4-4-2) and Buffalo Sabres (6-3-0) meet Wednesday. The opening faceoff at KeyBank Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Penguins vs. Sabres odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Pittsburgh suffered a 6-5 overtime loss against the visiting Boston Bruins Tuesday. The Penguins are 0-4-1 in their last 5 games since starting the season 4-0-1. Defense and goaltending have been problems: the Pens have allowed 4.80 goals per game over that losing skid.

The Sabres routed the Detroit Red Wings 8-3 Monday and are 2-1-0 so far on a 4-game homestand ending with this contest. Buffalo has top-10 scoring averages at both ends of the ice, scoring 4.1 goals per game (2nd) and allowing just 2.8 goals per game (10th).

Penguins at Sabres projected goalies

Casey DeSmith (0-2-1, 2.97 GAA, .913 SV%) vs. Craig Anderson (3-0-0,  1.66 GAA, .946 SV%)

DeSmith is making his 4th start of the season. He’s a 5-year NHL veteran who has found significantly more success at home (.925 SV% career) and in the latter months of the season.

Anderson is off to a terrific start. G Eric Comrie was between the pipes in Buffalo’s last game; Anderson was last in the net Saturday when he stopped 23-of-26 shots in a 4-3 Sabres win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Penguins at Sabres picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Sabres 3

Moneyline

The Pens are scuffling, but at some point — maybe soon — they may be considered a solid play. On the back half of this home-road double, that’s not likely the case here.

Buffalo’s wins of late have been supported by solid puck-possession numbers. If the tag on the Sabres hits +110 or so, they are a decent short underdog. Otherwise, PASS.

Puck line/Against the spread

The last two series meetings last season went past 60 minutes, and 4 straight Pittsburgh-Buffalo games have been decided by 1 goal. With that and the above in mind, the price on the SABRES +1.5 (-250) is a solid one. However, it’s likely only a consideration for larger bankrolls.

Over/Under

Both powerplays have been operating at average levels while drawing a solid number of looks, and both teams have been creating a good number of high-danger chances.

With this goaltending match-up and with Pittsburgh struggling on the penalty kill (70.6%, 28th in the NHL), there is VALUE ON THE OVER 6.5 (-115).

Detroit Red Wings at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Detroit Red Wings at Buffalo Sabres odds and lines, with NHL expert picks and predictions.

The Detroit Red Wings (4-2-2) and Buffalo Sabres (5-3-0) tussle Monday at the KeyBank Center. The game is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Wings vs. Sabres odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings clocked a 2-1 home-ice triumph over the Minnesota Wild Saturday. Detroit has been feast-or-famine at the defensive end. The Wings have held foes to 1 or 0 goals in 3 of their 4 wins. They’ve allowed 20 goals in their 4 losses.

The Sabres — who downed the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 in overtime Saturday — are in their home barn for a 3rd straight game. Buffalo tallied a pair of powerplay goals in the win over the Blackhawks, but it has been the club’s solid 5-on-5 play that has it averaging 3.6 goals per game (5th NHL).

Red Wings at Sabres projected goalies

Ville Husso (3-1-1, 2.40 GAA, .926 SV%) vs. Eric Comrie (2-3-0, 3.41 GAA, .909 SV%)

Husso opened his season with a 1-0 shutout and has since alternated 2 cycles of allowing 5 goals and 1 goal. He yielded 1 on 31 shots against Minnesota Saturday.

Comrie has been so-so while facing a ton of shots so far. He did not play Saturday against the Blackhawks but has logged an .862 SV% in his last 2 starts. In the first of those turns (Tuesday at Seattle Kraken), Comrie allowed 5 goals but was undone by 2 powerplay scores.

Red Wings at Sabres picks and predictions

Prediction

Sabres 3, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

Buffalo looks like its worst puck-possession games are pretty far back in the rearview mirror, and recent games have been encouraging.

Detroit has had players in the penalty box a bit too often of late, and perhaps that gives a Sabres powerplay that has scored in 5 of its last 6 games a chance too many.

Consider a partial-unit play on BUFFALO (-150). A price drop to -135 would make for fully vested action.

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS on trying to get the Sabres by multiple goals in a game with a likeable Under.

Over/Under

Early-season shooting percentages for both sides are a bit high. Buffalo has been yielding a lot of looks but in part due to some recent short-handed situations (allowing PP goals without piling up a ton of minutes). Detroit does not typically generate a slew of scoring chances.

BACK THE UNDER 6.5 (+100).

Buffalo Sabres at St. Louis Blues odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Buffalo Sabres at St. Louis Blues odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (16-28-8) head west to face the St. Louis Blues (30-14-6) Friday at Enterprise Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Sabres vs. Blues odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Sabres were blanked 4-0 at the Montreal Canadiens Wednesday. They’ll be fired up to light the lamp in “The Lou” as they have now lost four in a row. Look for them to apply pressure early and maybe sneak one in.

St. Louis delivered a convincing 4-1 road win over the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday and has had a couple of days to rest. G Jordan Binnington was great in net, and RW Vladimir Tarasenko returned from a one-game absence with a goal.

Sabres at Blues odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:28 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Sabres +230 (bet $100 to win $230) | Blues -300 (bet $100 to win $300)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Sabres +1.5 (+105) | Blues -1.5 (-130)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -140 | U: +112)

Sabres at Blues projected goalies

Craig Anderson (6-6-0, 2.92 GAA, .907 SV%) vs. Jordan Binnington (12-10-3, 3.25 GAA, .900 SV%, 1 SO)

Anderson is 1-4-0 with a 3.83 GAA and has allowed 3 goals or more in four of five games in February. That figures to happen again Friday as the team continues to rebuild.

Binnington put on a show Tuesday in a statement game for the struggling goaltender as he allowed just 1 goal on 26 shots to the Flyers. He was terrible beforehand allowing 18 goals in three previous games. Look for him to get one more start here in a soft spot to continue to get right.

Sabres at Blues odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Blues 4, Sabres 2

Money line

The Blues (-300) are too expensive to play on the money line most nights and this slate is no different. PASS

Against the spread

The BLUES -1.5 (-130) have won six of 10 games, and all of those wins have been by at least 2 goals. They’re 7-0 in the last seven games when playing on two days’ rest or more. This could even wind up being a 5-1 score considering how good Binnington looked against Philadelphia.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-140) is the way to go here with a lot of juice in tow. It’s surprising that the Over didn’t open at 6.5 with the way the Blues have been playing. If it goes there, stay away. However, we’ll light the lamp on a 5.5 total.

Buffalo Sabres at New York Islanders odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Buffalo Sabres at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (10-16-5) visit the New York Islanders (8-12-6) Thursday at UBS Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Sabres vs. Islanders odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Sabres lost a tough one 4-3 at home to the New Jersey Devils as play resumed Wednesday. The Sabres were outshot 42-22, although RW Tage Thompson showed up with 2 of the team’s 3 goals.

The Islanders were also supposed to play Wednesday and have a back-to-back situation, but the Red Wings had too many COVID issues to field a team. So the Isles come in with extra rest, last playing Dec. 19 in a shootout loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Sabres at Islanders projected goalies

Malcolm Subban (0-1-1, 4.79 GAA, .877 SV%) vs. Ilya Sorokin (7-7-5, 2.49 GAA, .926 SV%, 3 SO)

Subban gets the nod after Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was the backstop in the home loss to New Jersey Wednesday. Subban last appeared Dec. 17 in Pittsburgh when he turned aside 45 of the 48 shots he faced in a 3-2 overtime loss.

Sorokin was in between the pipes last time out Dec. 19 against Vegas and he turned aside 31 of the 34 shots he faced in a shootout loss. He is still a respectable 2-1-3 with a 2.62 GAA and .921 SV% in six December appearances.

Sabres at Islanders odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 3, Sabres 2

Money line

The Islanders (-220) are well-rested, but risking more than two times your potential return on a sub-.500 team is just not a recommended wager.

AVOID, and look to the puck for a small-unit bet instead.

Against the spread

Play the SABRES +1.5 (-150) lightly, as this price isn’t terribly out of line.

The Islanders have just been too inconsistent this season. The past three games for the Sabres have also been one-goal games, and five of their last six have been decided by just one goal, too.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-115) is the lean here. While New York is rested there will likely be a rust factor. The Under is 5-1-1 in the last seven games for the Sabres, while going 2-1 in the three games prior to the holiday/COVID pause.

Buffalo Sabres at Minnesota Wild odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Buffalo Sabres at Minnesota Wild odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (9-15-4) visit the Minnesota Wild (19-8-1) Thursday at XCel Energy Center in St. Paul. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Sabres vs. Wild odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Sabres snapped an 0-5-2 skid with a 4-2 win in Winnipeg Tuesday. Buffalo now looks to use that as a springboard into this game in the Twin Cities.

The Wild were supposed to host the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday, but the game was postponed due to a COVID-19 concerns with the visitors. So, the Wild have been off and resting since Sunday when they lost at Vegas 6-4.

Sabres at Wild projected goalies

Malcolm Subban (0-1-0, 7.21 GAA, .760 SV%) vs. Cam Talbot (15-6-0, 2.71 GAA, .917 SV%)

Subban, who was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in a trade, made his Sabres debut at Carolina Dec. 4, coughing up 6 goals on 25 shots in a 6-2 loss. G Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has made four consecutive starts and can use the rest.

Talbot coughed up 5 goals on 35 shots Sunday in Vegas, snapping a six-game win streak by the backstop. He is 3-1-0 with a 2.72 GAA and .927 SV% in four starts in December.

Sabres at Wild odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Wild 5, Sabres 2

Money line

The Wild (-320) will cost you more than three times your potential return. That’s way too risky.

PASS and look to the puck line instead.

Against the spread

The WILD -1.5 (-122) is much more affordable, and they’re well rested. If you like the Wild to win, you should like them to cover the puck line as six of their past seven victories have come by 2 or more goals.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-115) is the play. Minnesota has hit the Over in seven of the past nine games.

While the Under is 3-0-1 in the Sabres’ past four outings, the Over is 6-2-1 in their past nine road games.

Buffalo Sabres at Seattle Kraken odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Buffalo Sabres at Seattle Kraken odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (5-3-1) face the Seattle Kraken (3-6-1) Thursday at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Puck drop is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Sabres vs. Kraken odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

After a hot start that saw them win three straight out of the gate, the Sabres are just 2-3-1 across their last six, including losses in the first two stops on the current road trip. Buffalo was tripped up 5-3 at San Jose Tuesday.

The Kraken were beaten down 5-2 at Edmonton Monday, and after a two-game win streak, Seattle has dropped two in a row while being outscored 8-3. The Kraken have posted a 1-3-1 mark against Eastern Conference teams.

Sabres at Kraken projected goalies

Craig Anderson (4-2-0, 2.50 GAA, .921 SV%) vs. Philipp Grubauer (3-4-1, 2.82 GAA, .896 SV%)

Anderson allowed a season-high five goals in San Jose Tuesday, so he’ll be looking for the bounce back. He won two straight and yielded just four total goals on 73 shots in the two games prior.

Grubauer has kept the expansion Kraken competitive. He’s allowed 3 or fewer goals in each of the past four starts, and six of the past seven outings, despite his losing record.

Sabres at Kraken odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Kraken 3, Sabres 2

Money line

The KRAKEN (-190) are a little more expensive than I’m comfortable playing, but the Sabres are just not playing well on this road trip. Buffalo has won just two of its last seven against Pacific Division teams, and it’ll lose in its first-ever meeting with Seattle.

Against the spread

The SABRES +1.5 (-175) are worth a look. A Seattle victory likely won’t come via blowout and the Sabres are 5-2 in the past seven against teams with a losing record, and two of the past three have been 1-goal games.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-110) is the lean, but only play this one lightly.

The Under is 3-2-1 in the previous six for the Sabres as they’ve averaged 2.7 goals per game during the span. The Under is 2-1 in the previous three for Seattle and is 2-1-1 in four home games for the Kraken. This won’t be a defensive slog, but it won’t be an Over, either.

The Sabres were dumped 4-1 at home Friday by the Boston Bruins, suffering their first loss of the season. Buffalo had a power outage with the one marker after averaging 4.0 goals per game in the first three outings.

Tokarski picked up a win Oct. 16 against the Arizona Coyotes, allowing just one goal on 21 shots in a 2-1 shootout victory. This will be his first appearance against the Devils since allowing two goals on 18 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss on April 3, 2015, as a member of the Montreal Canadiens.

Wedgewood coughed up four goals in that loss Thursday against the Capitals. He is expected to get the nod again, as both Jonathan Bernier and Mac Blackwood are sidelined due to injuries.

Sabres at Devils odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Sabres 4, Devils 2

Money line

The SABRES (+135) are a strong value on the road, facing the third-string goaltender of the Devils (-165).

It’s a tough turnaround after playing Friday at home against the Bruins, but Buffalo has been sharp so far this season offensively. They’ll get it done on its first road outing.

Against the spread

The SABRES +1.5 (-190) isn’t a terrible play if you want a little bit of insurance and don’t trust the visitors straight up. While I like Buffalo on the money line as a much better value, playing it plus the goal and a half isn’t out of line.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-122) is the lean, even though we have a battle of backup goaltenders. These aren’t the most prolific of offenses, and we should see a fair amount of goals, but not enough to push the total Over.

Boston Bruins at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Boston Bruins at Buffalo Sabres NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Boston Bruins (25-12-6) visit the Buffalo Sabres (12-26-7) for a three-game series at KeyBank Center beginning with a 6:30 p.m. ET puck drop Tuesday. Below, we analyze the Bruins-Sabres odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Bruins have won four straight games to remain fourth in the ultra-competitive East Division. The streak started with a 3-2 shootout win over the Sabres last Tuesday in LW Taylor Hall‘s debut for the B’s. Boston is coming off a 6-3 win over the Washington Capitals Sunday.

Buffalo is firmly last in the East Division but won two of its last three games against the Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Sabres’ 4-2 win over the Penguins Sunday was their fourth straight victory by a multi-goal margin.

The Bruins lead the season series 3-0, but the last two victories were both decided by a 3-2 score with the most recent going all the way to a shootout. All three meetings played to the Under on a projected goal total of 5.5.

Bruins at Sabres: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:45 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Bruins -300 (bet $300 to win $100) | Sabres +240 (bet $100 to win $240)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Bruins -1.5 (-110) | Sabres +1.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +105 | U: -125)

Bruins at Sabres: Projected starting goalies

Tuuka Rask (10-4-2, .910 SV%, 2.36 GAA) vs. Dustin Tokarski (2-5-2, .914 SV%, 3.15 GAA)

Rask is 2-0 with 52 saves on a total of 56 shots faced since returning to the lineup Thursday. He has been slightly worse on the road than at home this season with a 5-3-1 record, .901 save percentage and 2.66 goals against average through nine games as a visitor. He hasn’t faced Buffalo in 2021.

Tokarski continues to get an extended run in net with Linus Ullmark in and out of the lineup and Carter Hutton still sidelined by injury. The 31-year-old was in net for both wins over the Caps and Pens with a total of 61 saves on 65 shots.

Bruins at Sabres: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Bruins 5, Sabres 2

Money line (ML)

The Bruins (-300) are really hitting their stride entering the stretch run of the regular season. Hall has 2 goals and 1 assist in four games with Boston to match his goal total from his disappointing 37-game run with Buffalo.

Boston has the edge in all facets of this game and especially in net, but a -300 price point always draws a PASS when betting a regular-season hockey game. Look to the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

The last two games of the season series have been tight, but Boston is coming off three much more impressive wins against quality opponents in the Caps and New York Islanders. The Bruins outscored the opposition 13-4 in those three games.

Boston will be a dangerous four-seed in the playoffs. Back the BRUINS -2.5 (+155) on the alternate puck line for maximum profit in a 3-goal margin of victory.

Over/Under (O/U)

Following suit of the expected offensive outburst for the Bruins, OVER 5.5 (+105) is the play. We won’t need much output from the Sabres.

Buffalo Sabres at Washington Capitals odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Buffalo Sabres at Washington Capitals NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Buffalo Sabres (10-25-7) visit the Washington Capitals (28-11-4) Thursday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at Capital One Arena. Below, we analyze the Sabres-Capitals odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Capitals enter the day with a tenuous hold on first place in the ultra-competitive East Division. They’ve won three straight games and outscored the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers by a total of 14-2 in their last two outings.

Buffalo is a surprising 3-2-1 across its last six games but remains buried in last place in the East. The Sabres fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Boston Bruins Tuesday.

Sabres at Capitals: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:11 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Sabres +270 (bet $100 to win $270) | Capitals -300 (bet $300 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Sabres +1.5 (+100) | Capitals -1.5 (-125)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -120 | U: +105)

Sabres at Capitals: Projected starting goalies

Dustin Tokarski (0-4-2, .905 SV%, 3.54 GAA) at Ilya Samsonov (10-3-1, .899 SV%, 2.83 GAA)

A start by Tokarski would give him his most since the 2014-15 campaign. The 31-year-old stopped 29 of 31 shots in getting the Sabres to the shootout against the Bruins Tuesday. He allowed 4 goals on 33 shots in his previous outing, also against the Caps.

Samsonov allowed just one goal on 30 shots in the win over the Flyers. He had allowed 18 total goals over his previous four outings but managed to go 2-2 despite his .843 SV%.

Sabres at Capitals: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Capitals 6, Sabres 1

Money line (ML)

There’s no case to be made for the Sabres to win this game and a bet on them is wasted money. Still, the -300 price for the Capitals is far too chalky of a bet on a regular-season NHL game.

Buffalo beat Washington 4-3 in a shootout Jan. 24 and has two other 1-goal losses in the season series but don’t go chasing ghosts.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Caps have 18 more wins than the Sabres on the season and just throttled two teams much better than the Sabres following a 4-3 win in the last head-to-head meeting.

CAPITALS -1.5 (-125) is a fine bet, but the value is on CAPITALS -2.5 (+135) on the alternate line.

Over/Under (O/U)

Bet the OVER 5.5 (-125) or OVER 6.5 (+125).

The Sabres are without their top two netminders and the season series is already 4-2-1 against the number.
