Patriots coaching staff calls Bills defense ‘best group’ they’ve faced all year

Bill Belichick & the #Patriots know the #Bills have a good defense:

The New England Patriots seem to always pose a threat on the defensive side of the ball.

That’s what tends to happen with teams led by head coach Bill Belichick. Plus, that huge spending spree the Patriots did this offseason didn’t hurt.

But on offense, the Pats have overachieved a bit this season. Once perceived to be a bit of a rebuilding year on that side of the ball, the Patriots (8-4) have played well.

So much so that the Buffalo Bills (7-4) trail New England in the AFC East standings ahead of their massive Monday Night Football meeting in Week 13.

But the Patriots also know the Bills aren’t going to be an easy task, especially Buffalo’s defense.

The New England coaching staff has sung the praises on the Bills defense. So much so that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels thinks it might be their biggest challenge to date.

“This is the best group we’ve played all year,” McDaniels said on Tuesday via video conference. “We don’t play a group that’s more connected than this one. Whatever the call is, all 11 guys know exactly what their role is on the call and they never make a mistake it seems.”

“They just don’t give up many easy plays and they’re one of the best teams we’ll play this year in terms of limiting big production. They force you to be disciplined, they force you to execute play after play, they force you to drive the football,” McDaniels added.

Belichick mentioned that the prowess Buffalo has defensively starts at the top.

“Buffalo’s a great team. [Bills head coach] Sean (McDermott) has done a great job with his team, being with the organization, team building, so forth. We have a lot of respect for Buffalo and what they’ve accomplished, what they are, how they play,” Belichick said via video conference. “We’re going to have to play our best game. We know that. That’s what we’re going to prepare to do.”

For the Bills heading into this matchup, the focus is likely on rookie quarterback Mac Jones. Specifically, Buffalo would be smart to try and make the QB beat them by taking away their rushing attack.

It sounds like McDaniels is already well aware that might be the case.

He said Jones will have to take care of the football and help his team win the turnover battle against the Bills.

“This week’s going to be another big challenge there and I think for Mac when he comes out of the game having generally taken care of the ball and made some good decisions, even if they resulted in an incomplete pass or a possession that ended in a punt or a field goal. To me, I don’t look at all those and say ‘wow, what a disaster that was.’ Sometimes you have to understand what could’ve been in terms of worse,” McDaniels said.

That turnover battle is always a spot to watch in every NFL game.

But even more so when two teams that are really good at it faceoff.

The Patriots enter Week 13 with the second-best turnover differential in the league (+10). The Bills are in third (+9).

In terms of taking it away, both teams are tied at the second-best spot at 25 total takeaways.

Sean McDermott praises Mac Jones as he discusses the ‘challenge’ ahead with Patriots

“Josh McDaniels seems like he’s up to his old ways of developing another young quarterback at an elite level.”

Arguably the two best teams in the AFC will square off on Monday night in Week 13.

The New England Patriots will hit the road to face the Buffalo Bills in what will likely Bill Belichick’s toughest game of the season thus far. The Patriots (8-4) have the No. 1 scoring defense and the Bills (7-4) have the No. 2 scoring this defense — while both teams in the Top 10 with points per game.

This matchup has huge playoff implications and the winner will hold much more confidence when the teams meet again in Week 16.

A huge part of the Patriots’ success is the poise of Mac Jones, who’s having a potential Rookie of the Year season. Bills head coach Sean McDermott acknowledged this while speaking about the matchup with reporters on Tuesday.

“Talented young quarterback,” he said, transcribed by WEEI. “As I mentioned earlier, Josh McDaniels seems like he’s up to his old ways of developing another young quarterback at an elite level. I think Mac is off to a phenomenal start. He’s as good as advertised. There’s a lot of talk out there about him and does a great job executing their offense. It will be a big challenge for us.”

As McDermott discussed how well-coached the Patriots are, he couldn’t help but get back to Jones’ growth with the team.

“They are playing really high level football,” he said. “Again, well-coached. They execute well. They are not beating themselves. Play good complementary football. Their offense is, I think Mac Jones is off to a great start, as I said, and they are very physical with what they do.”

The Bills have a pretty good and young quarterback on their side also with Josh Allen. This game will undoubtedly carry a playoff atmosphere, especially with the prime time slot on Monday night.

Report: Bills fill practice squad with CB Greg Stroman

Report: #Bills fill practice squad with CB Greg Stroman:

The Buffalo Bills only briefly had a vacant spot on their practice squad. The team took only one day to reportedly fill it.

According to ESPN in Washington, former Football Team cornerback Greg Stroman was signed to Buffalo’s practice squad on Wednesday.

One day prior, the Bills (7-4) had a spot opened up on their practice squad by the New York Giants.

Due to a neck injury to quarterback Daniel Jones, the Giants needed some depth. They dubbed now-former Buffalo QB Jake Fromm as the ticket to that as he was signed by New York.

Stroman’s addition also comes following cornerback Tre’Davious White’s season-ending knee injury last week. Buffalo added another corner, Tim Harris, to their practice squad for depth as well earlier this week.

Stroman was a seventh-round pick out of the University of Virginia in 2018. He was teammates with current Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds there.

As a rookie, Stroman played in 15 games but injuries derailed him the ensuing two seasons. During training camp, Stroman was cut by Washington.

Stroman also has experience as a returner.

NFL Playoff Picture ahead of Week 13: Ravens climb to the top spot in the AFC

The Ravens have looked a mess all season, but they’re in sole control of the AFC right now.

The Ravens’ string of good luck in close games has really paid off recently, rising to the top of the AFC as the 2021 season gears up for the final stretch. While the Ravens, so far, appear to be this season’s team of destiny, teams like the Chargers need to pick up the slack before they find themselves on the outside looking in by the time January comes.

There are six weeks left in the season, so there will be plenty of shuffling, but the work that teams need to do to solidify a playoff spot is becoming clearer by the week.

Here’s what the postseason bracket would look like if it were to start prior to Week 13.

Bills vs. Patriots: 7 storylines to follow in Week 13

#Bills vs. #Patriots: 7 storylines to follow in Week 13:

It’s Wednesday, so the Buffalo Bills are now turning their attention to their next opponent. This week, it might be the biggest game of the season to date.

After smacking the New Orleans Saints on Thanksgiving, the Bills (7-4) play a huge AFC East showdown. Their opponent is the New England Patriots (8-4) on Monday Night Football.

With that, here are seven storylines to follow as Week 13 approaches:

Report: Bills’ Ken Dorsey would be interested if Miami Hurricanes job opens up

A link between #Bills QB coach Ken Dorsey and Miami was made:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

It’s far too early to tell if there is any serious risk, but according to a report on Tuesday, one Buffalo Bills coach tied to the school might have his eye on the University of Miami.

Per the Sun Sentinel, Buffalo quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey, who attended Miami and won a National Championship as a member of the Hurricanes in 2001, could be interested if a job opens up.

But that’s one big if.

Currently Miami does still have Manny Diaz employed as their head coach, but there are some questions as to whether or not he’ll be brought back.

Dorsey was named as a potential person who would be interested in the job if Diaz is fired after the 2021 season.

The Hurricanes opened the season at 2-4 but have won five of their last six games. In his first two seasons at the helm, Diaz amassed only a 14-10 record as well.

A once high-profile college program, “The U” has fallen from graces in recent years. One could envision Dorsey being interested in the position if it become vacant, but it’s still in the early stages as there isn’t even an open job as of now.

Additionally, there’s even some belief that Diaz might not even be out of work.

Also on Tuesday, On3 Sports reported that there’s a “good chance” that Diaz returns to Miami in 2022.

All things considered, it’s too early to worry about Dorsey, but it’s potentially a situation to keep an eye on.

As Josh Allen’s QB coach, Dorsey has been one of those credited with helping him improve throughout his career.

Dorsey also was given a bit of a promotion by the Bills this past offseason, potentially as a way to make Dorsey comfortable with the idea of staying with the Bills.

Some view Dorsey as a replacement for Brian Daboll down the line if Buffalo’s offensive coordinator is one day hired as a head coach elsewhere in the NFL.

Giants sign Bills QB Jake Fromm off practice squad

#Giants sign #Bills QB Jake Fromm off practice squad:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Three is the magic number.

For the third time this season, the Buffalo Bills have had a player signed off their practice squad by another team.

In that happening, the Bills (7-4) are now down to only three quarterbacks in their building as well: Josh Allen, Mitchell Trubisky and Davis Webb.

Per the NFL’s transaction wire on Tuesday, the New York Giants (4-7) signed quarterback Jake Fromm off Buffalo’s practice squad.

The reasoning was because Giants starter Daniel Jones suffered a neck injury in their Week 12 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. His status is unknown, and Fromm will provide insurance on their 53-man roster.

If Jones can’t play in their next game on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins (5-7), Mike Glennon would start.

Prior to Fromm’s signing, Jones and Glennon were the only two quarterbacks on their roster.

Brian Lewerke, who went undrafted at the 2020 NFL draft where Fromm was a fifth-round pick of the Bills, is also on the Giants’ practice squad.

Fromm has not appeared in a regular season game in the NFL, but he’s likely an upgrade from Lewerke.

While Fromm is the third player signed by another team off of Buffalo’s practice squad this season, he’s the first non-rookie.

The Eagles first signed seventh-round offensive lineman Jackson Anderson via the Bills’ PS. Following him was sixth-round cornerback Rachad Wildgoose, who is now on the New York Jets.

Bills get Star Lotulelei, Jon Feliciano, Spencer Brown back at practice

#Bills get Star Lotulelei, Jon Feliciano, Spencer Brown back at practice:

A trio of starting players for the Buffalo Bills returned to practice on Tuesday just in time to potentially face the New England Patriots in Week 13.

The Bills (7-4) see the full returns of two players from their Reserve/ COVID-19 list.

That pair is defensive tackle Star Lotulelei and rookie offensive tackle Spencer Brown, who were activated from the designation.

Because of the nature of the list, both Lotulelei and Brown are cleared to start on Monday against the Patriots (8-4). Lotulelei has been on the COVID list since Nov. 14 while Brown’s spell there began on Nov. 18.

While that’s good news, the Bills (7-4) are not fully in the clear with offensive lineman Jon Feliciano.

Buffalo designated Feliciano to return from injured reserve on Tuesday as well. He landed on IR on Nov. 6 thanks to a calf injury.

Changing Feliciano’s status simply means he can now practice with the team. It does not mean he will play vs. the Pats.

Buffalo has 21 days to activate him full to their 53-man roster or else Feliciano returns to IR. So the Bills could just be getting him in playing shape to return in two games… time will tell.

If that window closes and Feliciano goes back and is not activated from IR, he goes back to the injured reserve list for good and his season is over.

The Bills will certainly hope that Feliciano will be available and good to go against New England.

For what it’s worth, prior to facing the New Orleans Saints in Week 12, Buffalo designated wide receiver Marquez Stevenson for return as well. He immediately got into the lineup.

Returning Lotulelei, Brown and Feliciano would be positive additions to Buffalo’s play in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Buffalo also placed rookie offensive lineman Tommy Doyle on the COVID-19 list after activating Brown and Lotulelei from it on Tuesday. Cornerback Tre’Davious White was also placed on injured reserve with his season-ending ACL injury.

Buffalo Bills sign Tim Harris to practice squad

#vBills sign Tim Harris to practice squad:

The Buffalo Bills have signed some roster depth after the massive injury the team took last week.

In Week 12, the Bills (7-4) blew out the New Orleans Saints, 31-6. That came at a cost.

All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White tore his ACL in the win. That ends his 2021 season early.

Attempting to fill White’s shoes will be cornerbacks Levi Wallace and Dane Jackson. With Jackson now slated to see more playing time, more depth is needed.

Tim Harris comes in there. The Bills announced on Monday that the 26-year-old corner has signed to the team’s practice squad.

In a corresponding move, western New York native and offensive lineman Evin Ksiezarczyk was released from Buffalo’s practice squad.

Harris spent some brief time with the Bills during training camp but was later released. From there, Harris signed to the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad before now heading back to Buffalo.

Harris was a sixth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2019 out of Virginia.

Power rankings: Bills placements vary in Week 13 polls

Power rankings this week see the #Bills all over with 6th being the most common spot:

Here is how the Buffalo Bills fared in national power rankings polls heading into Week 13 following their 31-6 win over the New Orleans Saints:

USA TODAY

11. Bills (12): The turnovers continue to mount. New England continues to mount. Buffalo will now have to mount up without Pro Bowl CB Tre’Davious White. Feels like those Super Bowl hopes are slipping away.

Touchdown Wire

7. Buffalo Bills (7-4)

Last week: 10

A blowout win or a questionable loss? That’s the formula for the Bills this season. This week, it was the first choice. Buffalo traveled to New Orleans and it was a 31-6 final for the Bills. It felt like it could have been a 51-6 final.

Sporting News

8. Buffalo Bills 7-4 (11)

The Bills came out and didn’t waste time dominating the Saints on Thanksgiving with Josh Allen sticking with his familiar passing game hits of Dawson Knox and Stefon Diggs. The defense also went back to necessary flexing against run and pass, taking advantage of a shorthanded team.

Bleacher Report

6. Buffalo Bills (7-4)

Last Week: 8

Week 12 Result: Won at New Orleans 31-6

The Buffalo Bills entered Week 12 with one mission: to wash off the stink from a blowout loss at home to the Indianapolis Colts the week before that sent them tumbling from first place in the AFC East all the way to the seventh seed in the AFC.

In most respects, the Bills accomplished that mission. Facing a New Orleans Saints team that has been decimated by injuries, Buffalo dominated on both sides of the ball on the way to a blowout victory.

However, that victory may have been somewhat Pyrrhic.

Star cornerback Tre’Davious White tore his ACL in the second quarter of the game and will miss the rest of the season. Quarterback Josh Allen told reporters that losing White is a major blow.

“I know all the guys in the locker room are praying for him and hurting with him,” Allen said. “You can’t say a single bad thing about that man. He comes in and busts his ass every day.”

“Every team in the league has to deal with injuries,” Davenport said. “But there are injuries, and then there are season-killers. Losing the heart and soul of the AFC’s best pass defense may well be the latter.”

NFL.com

6. Buffalo Bills (7-4)

Previous rank: No. 7

The Bills went to New Orleans on Thanksgiving night and overwhelmed an injury-decimated Saints team, an important bounce-back win for a team on the edge of crisis after a blowout loss to the Colts four days earlier. The news wasn’t all good, however: one-time All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White went down with a non-contact left knee injury later diagnosed as a season-ending ACL tear. This Bills season will be defined, in part, by how Sean McDermott can pivot and adapt without his most important player on defense. You can imagine Bill Belichick is already scheming ways to attack the White-free Buffalo D with a huge divisional showdown up next.

CBS Sports

6. Bills (7-4)

Previous rank: 11

What we saw against the Saints was the offense getting back on track, in large part because they were patient. That was a smart decision by Josh Allen.

Pro Football Talk

9. Bills (7-4, No. 11): If the Bills are going to win the division, they’re going to have to earn it with a couple of games coming up against the Patriots.

ESPN

Previous ranking: 12

Week 6 confidence rating: 7.8
How it’s going now: 7.9

Well, the rating hasn’t changed that much because the Bills haven’t defeated a big-time opponent, outside of a Week 5 win versus the Chiefs. Since the Week 6 loss to the Titans, the Bills have been up and down, losing to the Jaguars and Colts (in blowout fashion) while beating the Dolphins, Jets and Saints.

Buffalo has not been able to stack wins since the beginning of October. The offense needs to establish more of its identity and show that it can be effective game after game. Two upcoming matchups against the Patriots and a contest in Tampa will be telling.
