AFC East standings after Week 13: Miami picks up a game on Buffalo

The Patriots have taken over the top spot.

13 weeks into the 2021 NFL season, and the AFC East has a new team in first place, as the New England Patriots took over the top spot from the Buffalo Bills.

In this past week, the Patriots defeated the Bills on Monday night 14-10 in a throwback-style game that saw New England throw the ball just three times, the fewest pass attempts in a game by a winning team since 1991. Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson, and Brandon Bolden combined for 217 yards on 38 carries for a 5.7-yard average.

New England’s defense has been one of the best in the league for some time now. After the win, they are allowing the fewest points per game in the league (15.8). Buffalo’s defense is still strong, but they weren’t tested through the air after the loss of Tre’Davious White the week prior, so that could be a concern going forward.

With the loss, Buffalo solidified their spot in second place for now.

Miami, in third place, defeated the New York Giants in Week 13 by a final score of 20-9. Brian Flores’ defense has been strong through their winning streak as well, moving up to 11th in points allowed per game (22.2). Their offense hasn’t put it all together yet, but the reintroduction of DeVante Parker should give fans some hope for after the bye.

The Jets remain in the basement of the division after losing to the Eagles with backup quarterback Gardner Minshew. Robert Saleh’s defense has been horrendous this year. Part of that is because of the injuries they’ve suffered, but even when they were healthy they had issues. The one thing to build on is that Zach Wilson didn’t look horrible.

Week 14 AFC East matchups:

Buffalo Bills (7-5) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-3)

New York Jets (3-9) vs. New Orleans Saints (5-7)

New England Patriots (9-4): Bye Week

Miami Dolphins (6-7): Bye Week

Bill Belichick further explains Patriots run-specific game plan vs. Bills

“We were able to manage the game the way we did and that worked out all right for us.”

Bill Belichick played the game of his dreams on Monday night.

In a to-the-wire 14-10 win over the Buffalo Bills, the New England Patriots threw the ball three total times due to winds that hit up to 55 MPH. Mac Jones had two completions for 19 yards and the Patriots had 222 rushing yards on 46 attempts. It was old school football that led to some security at the No. 1 spot in both the division and conference for New England.

Belichick joined WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday morning and further elaborated on the unique game plan.

“Again, I think if it had been a different type of game and we would have needed to throw there in the fourth quarter then we would have thrown,” he said. “We were able to manage the game the way we did and that worked out all right for us.”

The Patriots were playing chess and they utilized the second and fourth quarter in which the wind was against their backs. Those would have been the times to let Jones loose as a passer, but they stuck to the ground game faithfully.

“We were talking about that last night. We can use our whole passing game. All the pass plays we have, they haven’t seen,” Belichick said jokingly.

“I think anytime you play a team almost in succession like we do here, twice in three weeks, or whatever it is, you just have to be careful and realize that even though it’s the same two teams, it’s not the same game. There will be players who play in the next game who didn’t play in this one and probably vise-versa. The game will take a different course and the conditions will probably be different too, so [that will probably have] something to do with it. We’re starting all over at that point and when we get to them, we get to them. It’s Indy first, but we can’t assume that things are going to go like they did last night. It will be a completely different game.”

The Patriots have a bye week and then they’ll play the Indianapolis Colts, with the Bills coming to Foxborough shortly after. As Belichick said, the next game could and likely will look much different.

Bill Belichick got one of the coolest wins of his career in the unlikeliest of ways

Bill Belichick must have absolutely loved this win.

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Bill Belichick has won a ton of cool games in his legendary coaching career in the NFL but you have to think that shortly after last night’s victory over the Bills he looked at a stat sheet and giggled a bit over what he and his team had just done in Buffalo.

Because it was easily one of the coolest wins of his career and it happened in the unlikeliest of ways.

Here’s the stat that Belichick had to love the most – his rookie QB, Mac Jones, threw just three passes in the game (the lowest amount of passes thrown in a game in franchise history and the fewest attempts in a NFL game since 1974) and New England still beat a very good division rival on the road in a very hostile environment.

Three passes! In the year 2021! Madness!

Here’s another stat Belichick had to love – the Patriots ran for 222 yards on a night when everyone knew they were going to run the ball a lot. The Bills defense, which was upset after the game, knew what was coming and couldn’t stop it. That had to make the guy in the hoodie feel so warm inside.

The wind last night was easily the star of the game. It wowed us all before kickoff when it almost knocked over the ESPN crew on the sideline and then it beat up both teams once the game begin.

But while the Bills seemed to just try to go about business as usual, Belichick and the Patriots decided to understand the situation and changed things up on the fly to battle the elements as smartly as possible.

And boy did they. The Patriots used six offensive linemen on 61 percent of their plays, which is the most that’s been done in five years.

They ran the ball and ran the ball and ran the ball. And then after Damien Harris scored on a 64-yard TD run in the first quarter they ran the ball again to get a two-point conversion instead of kicking an extra point. The 8-0 lead set the tone early and those two points seemed to be worth a lot more than what showed up on the scoreboard.

At one point the Patriots even called a QB sneak on a 3rd and 5 that had Mac Jones pushing his way up the middle like it was a 4th and inches play call. He didn’t pick up the first down but it was clear to everyone on that play that New England was going to do whatever it took to not make any mistakes and just be content with leaving Buffalo with a huge win.

Belichick is a football nut. He loves football history, the origins of the game, and studying the different ways the game has been played over the years. Last night his team won a throwback game by throwing it just three times while doing everything it could on the ground and on defense to come out on top.

Belichick must have felt really good when he settled into his seat on the plane for the short trip back home. Maybe he even laughed out loud a bit. Or maybe he just looked out the window and let out a sly grin as the plane took flight.

Either way, he added another legendary win to his legendary resume and he did it his way, which yet again proved to be the best way.

Matthew Judon delivers positive update following injury scare vs. Bills

Patriots fans can let out a huge sigh of relief with this update from the star pass-rusher.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqby79hc76t2s390 player_id=none image=https://patriotswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Matthew Judon is arguably the most valuable New England Patriot this season.

After recording a sack in the 14-10 gritty win over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, he tallied 12.5 on the season — which is one behind the team record of 13.5. It’s been 13 games. Judon is by far the best free agent signing in the NFL this year and he’s changed the complexion of this defense.

That’s why every Patriots fan gasped while seeing him injured late in the fourth quarter against the Bills while tackling Devin Singletary. Judon eventually got back into the game and finished it out, and that was clearly a positive sign.

During his post-game interview, Judon confirmed that he’s okay and that it was a slight rib injury that stemmed from Dont’a Hightower’s helmet.

“Yeah, how I came down his helmet was just in my rib. Lost my breath a little bit,” Judon said. “I tried to get up, get back to the line of scrimmage, but I really couldn’t breathe. But I’m OK. I’m OK.”

The Patriots dodged a bullet on that one.

Damien Harris left the game with a hamstring injury and Adrian Phillips left with a knee injury — the status of both key players is still unknown.

Sean McDermott dismisses question on psychological toll of coaching vs. Belichick

“Let’s not give more credit than we need to give credit to Bill Belichick in this one.”

The New England Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills with a novel game plan in brutal weather. But Bills coach Sean McDermott wasn’t ready to toss around credit to Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

McDermott was asked about the psychological toll of having Belichick on the opposing sideline — particularly as the Patriots effectively ran the ball again and again. New England finished with 46 carries for 222 yards and a touchdown but just two completions for 19 yards.

“Let’s not give more credit than we need to give credit to Bill Belichick in this one,” McDermott said. “With all due respect, it’s not a Bill Belichick-type thing. It’s ‘What are you doing with the opportunities you’ve got?'”

McDermott said he felt like his team was playing sloppy football.

The Patriots took the No. 1 spot in the AFC on Monday night. They’ll head into a bye, but have the Bills in Week 16.

Two Bills DBs were not happy at all with a reporter’s question about feeling embarrassed after loss

Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer didn’t like this question at all.

The New England Patriots went up to Buffalo on Monday night and beat the Bills, 14-10, in the most bizarre game of the season.

How weird was it? Rookie QB Mac Jones threw just THREE passes in the win due to the extremely high winds. He completed two of those passes for a total of 19 yards and still won the game. In the year 2021. Totally nuts.

The Patriots beat the Bills on the ground. Damien Harris ran for 111 yards and scored his team’s only TD on a 64-yard run into the wind in the first quarter. His teammate, Rhamondre Stevenson, ran for 78 yards on 24 carries. The Patriots as a team ran for 222 yards even though Buffalo pretty much new they were going to run the ball every play.

Yikes.

Right after the game Bills DBs Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde were asked if they were embarrassed by losing in such a way. They did not like that question.

Things got very awkward:

Hyde then said this as he walked off the podium:

Twitter had reactions:

Patriots maintain command of No. 1 seed in AFC with run-heavy win over Bills

The Patriots have an AFC-leading nine wins and they now hold a firm grasp of the AFC East entering the bye week.

The New England Patriots officially took over the No. 1 seed in the AFC with the Baltimore Ravens’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 13.

Bill Belichick’s team took a firm grasp of that positioning in the conference with a gritty 14-10 win against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. Mac Jones threw the ball three times due to 50-plus MPH wind and the Patriots used 222 yards on the ground to help compliment the league’s best defense.

The Patriots (9-4) also have a two-game lead in the AFC East, with the Bills sitting at 7-5 and the surging Miami Dolphins at 6-7. New England is now entering the bye week with the Indianapolis Colts on the other side, followed up by a home game against the Bills.

Belichick is currently sitting exactly where he wants to be.

Bills’ Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer were incredibly offended when asked about run defense

The Bills did not feel it was fair to categorize their performance as embarassing.

The New England Patriots ran the ball on all but three plays when their offense was on the field. That’s right: New England ran 46 times. Quarterback Mac Jones logged just three dropbacks and two completions. And the Patriots beat the Bills, 14-10, in swirling winds and snow.

Even though the Bills knew the Patriots intended to run the ball on every play, New England averaged 4.8 yards per carry and allowed a 64-yard touchdown to running back Damien Harris. Surely, the Bills had to be disappointed with the outcome of the game. They did not seem disappointed with their performance in the run defense, however.

A reporter asked them if they were embarrassed. They were offended. Here’s a look at that postgame exchange.

Awkward.

Instant analysis: Patriots stampede over Bills on Monday night

Instant analysis: #Patriots stampede over #Bills on Monday night (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills fell to the New England Patriots, 14-10, in a game with massive postseason implications.

The Bills dropped to seventh place in the AFC playoff picture at 7-6. Meanwhile, the Patriots move to the top of the AFC standings at 9-4.

There were tons of storylines coming into this outiong. However, the one that took center stage was the weather, as the gusty wind conditions limited any sort of dynamic play through the air.

This posed a major issue for Buffalo’s offense, as quarterback Josh Allen could not completely get on the same page with his receivers. Several of Allen’s passes floated and went off course.

While the weather stunted the offenses, it didn’t hinder the Patriots from dominating things in the trenches. To say New England committed to the run game is an understatement.

The Patriots ran the ball 46 times throughout the night. Conversely, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels only called three passing plays for rookie QB Mac Jones.

New England’s ground attack highlights a bigger problem for the Bills.

Buffalo’s defensive line was moved off the ball several times throughout the night. Part of that had to do with fatigue, as the Bills defensive front four faced had to face so many rushing plays.

New England also committed to using six offensive linemen. However, the Patriots put up 222 yards on the ground, including a 64-yard run by Damien Harris to open the scoring:

Buffalo was forced to lean on their own ground game more than they have in any other game this year. Unfortunately, the Bills did not make a great deal of headway on the ground.

The interior of the offensive line failed to create running lanes. Buffalo running backs Devin Singletary, Zack Moss, and Matt Breida combined for 60 yards on 19 rushes. The only glimmer of a run game occurred when Allen took off with his legs.

There were issues with pass protection as well. Allen was under duress often.

The pressure from New England forced Allen to make bad decisions. Allen’s eyes often moved away from his target while he was under heat. The weather forced passes off target.

All told, Allen completed half of his 30 attempts for 145 passing yards.

For a seemingly elite offense, the Bills once again struggled to complete drives. Buffalo’s only touchdown was set up by a gift turnover, as a punt attempt hit the helmet of Pats returner N’Keal Harry, setting up the Bills with the ball at New England’s 12-yard line.

Buffalo scored on the next play, a touchdown pass to wideout Gabriel Davis:

Buffalo squandered opportunities throughout the game. Outside of the Davis touchdown, the Bills could only add a field goal with the wind at their backs.

They also failed to score points on their final two offensive drives, both of which ended in the Patriots red zone. Tyler Bass’s 33-yard field goal was pushed to the right by the wind, and the final drive ended with a fourth-down pass defensed by Myles Bryant.

It was apparent that the Patriots did not respect the Bills run game. With the game conditions, the run game would be the most important part of the game plan.

New England made their commitment to the run game and Buffalo could not get anything moving on the ground. This put the Bills in some unfavorable situations, especially on third down.

The Pats did not have to lean on their rookie quarterback at all, which only helped the visitors. Buffalo’s game plan could not account for the New England defense and their run game. Bill Belichick won the battle over Sean McDermott in this matchup.

The road does not get any easier next week for the Bills, as they travel to Tampa Bay to take on the defending champions. Buffalo lost their fifth game of the season, and it’s also the Bills fifth Conference loss. With only five games remaining, the final month of the season will be quite chaotic for Buffalo as they make their push for a playoff spot.
