2020 NFL Draft: Bills take sixth WR in USA Today mock

Buffalo Bills select Clemson WR Tee Higgins in USA Today 2020 NFL Draft mock.

It was short, sweet and to the point, but USA Today thinks the Buffalo Bills could be picking Clemson wide receiver Tee Higgins at the 2020 NFL Draft.

Like Bills observers, USA Today sees the Bills’ passing attack exactly as it is when describing the selection:

22. Buffalo Bills – Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson: This offense has the slot guy (Cole Beasley) and the speed guy (Smokey Brown) but could really use the big guy – Higgins is 6-4, 215 – to help provide sometimes scattershot QB Josh Allen a target with a large catch radius.

Also like fans of the Bills, this mock draft sees the Eagles as potentially a problem for the Bills. Like Buffalo, Philadelphia could use a receiver, too. With their pick right before the Bills, another popular selection for the Bills, Colorado wideout Laviska Shenault, is drafted by the Eagles.

Interestingly, the Bills don’t let the run of receivers taken before them scare them away from taking their man in this mock. In total, six are off the board before Buffalo picks, which could help push other talent down the board. Instead, the Bills stick to their WR need here and go with the big-bodied target that their offense didn’t have last season. Adding such a target could help Allen improve his deep-ball accuracy, the most concerning aspect of his game in 2019.

12 offensive combine standouts for the Bills to consider

12 standout prospects on offense from the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine for the Buffalo Bills to consider drafting.

We started off our combine standouts pegged for the Bills defense, but now let’s get to the fun part… the offense.

Buffalo’s offense could stand to use plenty of help all over the place. Playmakers will be a big-time need for the Bills, but the trenches and in the backfield also can’t be overlooked.

Here are 12 offensive prospects who impressed at the combine that the Bills could consider adding at the upcoming draft:

WR Chase Claypool | Notre Dame

At 6-foot-4 and 238 pounds, Chase Claypool was already certainly on the Bills’ draft radar even if he didn’t put up the most prolific numbers at Notre Dame. But his size now comes with some documented speed after the combine. That big body moved the 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds. Per NFL Research, Claypool and Calvin Johnson are the only wide receivers who stood at least 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds and ran a sub-4.45-second 40-yard time. Good company. He also had a 40.5-inch vertical, fourth-best among wideouts

OL Ezra Cleveland | Boise State

Prior to the combine, Ezra Cleveland was viewed as a developmental tackle prospect but he improved his stock. If it wasn’t for top-10 prospect Tristan Wirfs’ work, Cleveland would’ve taken more headlines after the combine. He had a great three-cone time of 7.26 for a 6-foot-6, 311-pound guy, along with a ridiculous 4.93 40-yard time. He’s an athlete. Cleveland could now be a Day 2 pick and a guy that perhaps could move Cody Ford to the guard position. Many predict he needs to bulk up, though.

Potential Bills prospects to watch in National Championship

Buffalo Bills prospect watch for 2020 National Championship Game.

The National Championship Game in college football will take place on Monday. Unfortunately the Bills won’t be in the AFC Championship next weekend, so offseason mode is upon us.

Could there be some future Bills players on the field?

Here are some prospects to watch who could be on Buffalo’s radar at the 2020 NFL draft:

LSU Tigers wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Credit: Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

WR Justin Jefferson, LSU

Wide receiver is going to be a very talked about position in regard to the Bills during the pre-draft process. Buffalo had successful years from John Brown and Cole Beasley in 2019, but could certainly stand to add more in their wideout room.

Justin Jefferson could be a strong prospect on Buffalo’s radar in the second or third round. The 2020 receiver draft class is considered by many as a deep class, so the Bills could potentially get a first-round talent in the second round. Could that guy be Jefferson?

Here’s how Draft Wire breaks down Jefferson’s game:

As much fun as Joe Burrow has been this season for the Tigers, Justin Jefferson has been a big beneficiary of that stellar play. Not that Burrow is the only reason for the success, Jefferson has given opposing corners fits all season long. His double-moves down the field have created so many big plays for the Tigers. His size and explosiveness translates well to the next level, he has the potential to be a playmaker in the NFL.

EDGE K’Lavon Chaisson, LSU

The Bills have a strong defense under Sean McDermott, but the pass rush can stand to improve. Jordan Phillips on the interior of the defensive line was effective with 9.5 sacks last season, but he’s a free agent and you’d really like to get more production from the defensive end spots.

Chaisson could be a guy in play for the Bills in the first round of the draft. Considering Shaq Lawson is also a free agent and Trent Murphy could be a cut causality, Chaisson could certainly make some sense.

Here’s how Draft Wire breaks down his game:

Chaisson is an absolute freak coming off the weakside of the offensive line. He has the bend that scouts will salivate over and the explosiveness to make him a handful at the next level. He has all the intangibles to be similar to another former Tiger, Danielle Hunter. He can play in both a 4-3 and 3-4 alignment without suffering any coverage ability if needed. His relentless motor and athleticism sets him apart from most edge rushers. Once he learns to use his hands with better technique, watch out.
