5 Ohio State offensive players Alabama fans should know for the national championship

Alabama fans need to know these five offensive stars from Ohio State, as they will most likely have a big impact on the outcome of the game.

The 2020-2021 national championship game will feature two offensively strong teams in No. 1 Alabama and No. 3 Ohio State.

The offenses are certainly going to be major factors in this contest. It will likely be a back and forth with each team making numerous trips to the end zone.

Even though the Crimson Tide is considered the favorite, there’s no doubt the Buckeyes have the players to get the job done.

Here are five players from Ohio State that Alabama fans should know:

Halftime Report: Ohio State off to sluggish start against Nebraska

With great anticipation, Ohio State took the field for the first time in 2020. Outside of quarterback Justin Fields, the Buckeyes are off to a slow start.

Nebraska took the opening drive to the house in under two minutes to take an early lead. Ohio State and Fields would answer on their first possession as well.

Fields as looked as good as advertised going 12 for 13, completing his first 11 passes, with 187 yards passing and a beautiful touchdown toss, while leading the Buckeyes in rushing with 46 yards. Garrett Wilson has also hauled in 5 receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Unfortunately, the rest of the team isn’t doing much. The offensive line isn’t getting much of a push at the line of scrimmage opening few holes for the running backs. On the other side of the ball, the defense isn’t getting in the kind of pressure we’ve come to expect from the Buckeye front four.

Thanks to great field position and some questionable calls against Nebraska, Master Teague was able to scamper for a TD before the half. Heading into the locker room, the Buckeyes lead 24-14.

Here’s hoping the rust and opening game jitters are gone and the Buckeyes come out with some adjustments and a sense of urgency.

WATCH: Chase Young’s athletic ability is insane

The Ohio State Buckeyes former star defensive end Chase Young is athletically gifted, and he reminded us again of that.

Chase Young is going to cause problems in the NFL. At 6-foot-5, the star defensive end was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 draft and was widely considered the best overall prospect.

Young’s mix of pure athletic ability and strength helped make the 2019 season one for the record books. He set the record for most sacks in a single season by a Buckeye despite being suspended two games.

Young was phenomenal all season and certainly deserved being such a high pick.

That said, what makes most think he’ll have another level to his game at the NFL level is his insane athletic ability. A video released by B/R Gridiron originally from l0st_files/IG shows exactly why Young will be so dominant.

That is just insane.

Young is hurdling those like they’re nothing and continues right into a sprint. Just imagine him hurdling the defensive line rushing towards an opposing kicker. That’s a scary sight.

Primed to be one of the best rushers in the league, expect big things from Young right out of the gate.

Ohio State Football ranked third-best program in last ten years

The Ohio State Buckeyes were recently ranked the third-best NCAA football program in the last ten years, landing behind Alabama and Clemson.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were recently ranked the third-best NCAA football program in the last ten years, landing behind Alabama and Clemson.

If you look at the last ten years, the Buckeyes have seen some of the best, most dynamic college football players on their roster.

From the recent stars like DE Chase Young and QB Justin Fields to the older stars like RB Ezekiel Elliott and QB Braxton Miller, this program has been elite, and they may have the best outlook of any national powerhouse as well.

That said, as Bender notes, the past few seasons have incredible with the team winning three-straight Big Ten titles.

“The Buckeyes have put together an amazing eight-year stretch with Urban Meyer and Ryan Day. Ohio State has lost just one Big Ten home game in that stretch; a loss to Michigan State that prevented a Playoff run in 2015. The Buckeyes have the second-best winning percentage with the third-most draft picks in the past 10 seasons. The beat goes on in Columbus as Ohio State looks for a fourth straight Big Ten title in 2020,” Sporting News’ Bill Bender wrote.

He gave the Buckeyes the third spot behind a point system justifying the ranking.

Bender gave 10 points for a national championship, 5 points for an appearance in the national championship, 5 points for a CFP appearance, 3 points for a BCS bowl appearance, and then 2 points for each Heisman Trophy winner.

The Buckeyes ended his system with 90.5 points. Clemson and Alabama both crushed Ohio State, notching 122 and 166 points respectively. They were ranked No. 2 and No. 1.

Ohio State’s defensive in 2019 was the NCAA’s best

Ohio State boasted two of the top-three 2020 NFL Draft picks on their defense in 2019, and their dominance shouldn’t be forgotten.

The Ohio State Buckeyes defense in 2019 was one of the best in the NCAA. What was the absolute best in the association by a long shot was their two-man duo of Chase Young and Jeff Okudah.

Young, the No. 2 overall pick, set the university’s single-season sack record despite being suspended for two games.

He finished the season with 16.5 sacks and was taken by the Redskins, oftentimes being hailed as the best draft’s best prospect.

Immediately after Young was Jeff Okudah.

The No. 3 overall pick was an absolute lockdown corner. While his numbers aren’t great, if quarterbacks had the opportunity to avoid him, they did. Okudah has no weakness as an outside cornerback.

The Buckeyes were a few blown calls away from making the national championship game with these two leading the way.

The duo, along with other solid cornerbacks, safeties, and lineman, helped pave the way above a 90.0 grade in both pass-rush and coverage, the only team do have such numbers.

This team’s defense was at-large the best in the nation, and Pro Football Focus has them graded as the best pass-rush, coverage duo as well.

The Buckeyes will lose many key starters including their best and second-best corners.

These two will leave irreplaceable holes, and it’s a shame they couldn’t have help up the national championship trophy during their three-year stint with the Buckeyes.

Ohio State ranked in the highest tier of most desirable jobs by ESPN

The Ohio State football program has been getting it done for decades. According to ESPN, it’s one of the most desirable jobs in America.

What makes Ohio State’s football program such an attractive place for top-tier coaches?

The Buckeyes one of the best football programs in America, and it has  been possible by top-tier coaching. But, why did those coaches ever decide to come to Columbus?

A long history of having top regional recruits mixed with five stars from all across the nation have made it a powerhouse for recruiting, one reason for consistently dominant teams.

The program has seemingly always gotten great players from not only Ohio but across the country because of the tradition, resources, history, and culture.

Even Ryan Day, who was promoted from within the organization with not much head coaching experience had fit right in.

Day was a no-brainer for the program, and there is no denying it was slam dunk of a hire. There are multiple reasons why Ohio State coaching positions were ranked in college football’s top tier.

“Great location with excellent access to elite regional and national recruits; strong infrastructure and commitment from university and athletic administration; few financial limitations on assistant coach and staff hires; history as a top-5 program (recent or long term),” ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg said of tier 1 programs.

Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas and USC were ranked as tier 1 schools for having the most attractive coaching gigs. You can get a look at the rest of the schools and tiers by going to the piece by Rittenberg.

Checking every mark and having one of the most proactive athletic directors in the Big Ten. Having one of the profitable programs is also a good start. A nine-digit budget and almost nine figures in revenue are what likely brings those coaches in as well.

From conferences to facilities to financial strength, Ohio State’s football program has been among the top-tier programs in all of college football. And it’s not going anywhere soon either.

Ohio State Buckeyes rank No. 1 in 247Sports’ preseason top 25

While we knew the Ohio State Buckeyes were the best in the nation, 247Sports’ preseason football rankings just solidified that fact.

While we knew the Ohio State Buckeyes football program was the best in the nation, 247Sports’ preseason football rankings just solidified that fact to millions.

The rankings were compiled by columnist Chris Hummer.

With Ohio State kicking off the list, he highlights several areas that Ohio State will thrive in given their returning players and highly-touted recruiting class, one that’s among the best in the nation bringing in the highest-rated wide receiver and offensive lineman.

Hummer started off by ranking returning production for each team. The Buckeyes ranked 93rd in that as the team had two of the first three picks in the 2020 NFL Draft come from their defense.

However, when talking about Ohio State, Hummer didn’t start with the defense, like many have done in year’s past.

He started with junior quarterback phenom Justin Fields and ended with the up-and-coming cornerbacks while talking up the receivers, offensive line, and running backs in the middle.

You can read Ohio State’s entire section here. But, here are the two most intriguing parts.

“Heisman Trophy finalist Justin Fields is back for his junior season, and he’ll throw to a wide receiver room that projects to be among the best in the country…. Still, Ohio State does not lack for potential standouts. Cornerback Shaun Wade returns to anchor the secondary as the Buckeyes’ next likely first-round DB, and rising sophomore Zach Harrison projects as the team’s next star edge rusher,” Hummer wrote.

Following Ohio State and rounding out the top five was Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Penn State in that order. Florida, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, defending champs LSU and then Wisconsin all join in to make the top ten.

Former Ohio State H-back Jaelen Gill will transfer to Boston College

While we knew Jaulen Gill was going to transfer, we didn’t know where. Taking to Twitter, the running back committed to Boston College.

While we knew Jaelen Gill was going to transfer because of an earlier announcement, we didn’t know where.

Taking to Twitter, the running back committed to Boston College. The Eagles are coming off a 6-7 season and will have to climb past Clemson and others to conquer the ACC.

Hoping that Gill can be the answer, the former four-star recruit could transition back to running back at Boston College. Gill was the No. 2 all-purpose back in the Class of 2018.

After switching to a slot receiver while at Ohio State in what seemed like an attempt to gain more opportunity, Gill seemed to fall victim to the numbers game at the position.

Master Teague served as the team’s backup running back last season while the plethora of talented receivers took any opportunity from Gill. With skilled running backs and receivers inbound, Gill saw the end of the tunnel and wanted something different.

That said, he entered the transfer portal and, according to his tweet, is now on his way to Boston College.

Gill did redshirt his freshman season so he will have an extra year to prove himself. Being a highly touted recruit coming out of high school, Gill should have the skill to take the Eagles to a new level. However, unless he receives a waiver from the NCAA, he’ll have to sit out the 2020 season because of undergraduate transfer rules.

We wish Gill the best in his time at Boston College.
