Bryce Young & Will Reichard earn SEC Weekly honors recognition

These two stars stood above the rest in the SEC!

The Alabama Crimson Tide took down the No. 14 ranked Miami Hurricanes in Atlanta on Saturday to kickoff their 2021 seasons. The game ended with an Alabama win, which looked effortless, as the fourth quarter ended with a score of 44-13.

Alabama’s win could be credited to many different players, but there are two that not only stood above the rest of their team, but the SEC overall.

Quarterback Bryce Young, who made his debut as the starting quarterback, was named the SEC’s offensive player of the week. He tallied 344 passing yards and four passing touchdowns among other impressive accolades from Saturday.

Kicker Will Reichard was named the SEC’s special teams player of the week. He did not miss a single kick all season in 2020, and the streak continues into the 2021 season, as he drilled three field goals and five extra points.

Alabama’s all-time record against the Mercer Bears

What is Alabama’s all-time record against the Mercer Bears?

Alabama will make its home debut of the 2021 season this Saturday as they host the Mercer Bears.

This will be the first time that Bryant-Denny Stadium will be at full capacity since Alabama hosted Western Carolina in late November of the 2019 season.

Alabama is coming off a dominating victory over the Miami Hurricanes while Mercer also picked up a win in a run-away fashion against Point University by a score of 69 to 0.

Alabama and Mercer have only faced off a total of three times heading into Saturday’s matchup. Alabama has won all three of the previous matchups.

The two programs last met back in the 2017 season, a contest that Alabama won by a score of 56-0.

Bryce Young and the rest of the Tide players look to carry their hot start in Atlanta back home to Tuscaloosa this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CT.

DRAFT STOCK: Where does Bryce Young currently rank on 2023 NFL mock drafts?

Bryce Young isn’t eligible for another two years, but his stock is on the rise!

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young had quite the debut as the Crimson Tide starting quarterback against the Miami Hurricanes. Young broke the record for most touchdowns thrown in a debut start with four, and managed to throw for 344 yards.

He saw action in nine games in 2020 as a true freshman under Mac Jones; but now as a starter, the football world is getting a clean look at the young star.

Because he’s only a junior, Young still has to wait one more season after 2021 before he can declare for the NFL draft. Meaning, he’ll be eligible for the 2023 draft.

Here’s where Young stands on current 2023 NFL mock drafts:

Fueled By Sports – Atlanta Falcons, No. 1 overall

Pro Football Network Houston Texans, No. 2 overall

Draft CountdownPittsburgh Steelers, No. 3 overall

EatDrinkAndSleepFootballChicago Bears, No. 9 overall

Walter Football – Denver Broncos, No. 26 overall

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Bryce Young’s draft stock as he continues to perform throughout his sophomore season.

Alabama football: Grading the Tide’s win over the Miami Hurricanes

Grading Alabama’s performance against the Miami Hurricanes

Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide were able to handle the Miami Hurricanes Saturday inside of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, winning the contest 44-13.

Now it is time for our weekly report card for the Tide’s performance.

OFFENSE: A-

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

It’s hard to find much to complain about when it comes to the Alabama offense. Bryce Young and company were able to move the ball at will throughout the game.

Alabama passed for a totaled 510 yards of offense while picking up 28 first downs and scoring 44 points.

The run game was not dominant, but it was good enough. Miami ran a lot of run blitzes to help contain the Tide backs.

The makeshift offensive line held up pretty well for the most part, but they did allow a quick pressure that led to a strip-sack on QB Bryce Young. Other than that, the offense performed well considering all of the new starters that were making their debut.

DEFENSE: A+

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

The 2021 Alabama defense entered this season with lofty expectations and they delivered. Miami QB D’Eriq King was under pressure the entire game and the Hurricanes could not muster anything on the ground averaging just 2.8 yards per rush.

The Alabama defense forced one fumble on King and intercepted him an additional two times.

The goal-line stand to start the second half was the icing on the cake for Alabama’s defense and set the tone for the last half of football.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A-

Gary Cosby-USA TODAY Sports

Will Reichard continues to come through for the Crimson Tide. Not only did Reichard connect on all five of his extra points, but he also connected on all three of his field-goal attempts, including a 51-yard attempt.

Alabama only had two opportunities to punt and averaged just 31-yards per punt.

OVERALL: A-

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Overall it was a great performance for the Alabama Crimson Tide to start the 2021 football season. Usually, the most improvement comes between week one and week two of the season, let’s see how the Tide builds off a dominating week one.

Areas of concern for Alabama heading into the matchup with Miami

Areas of concern for Alabama heading into the Miami matchup

Alabama is the overwhelming favorite against the Miami Hurricanes as they face off in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game this Saturday in Atlanta. Alabama returns plenty of star power on the defensive side of the ball and also has plethra of young and explosive playmakers offensively.

With that being said, there are a couple of areas that should cause some concern for the fans of the Tide.

QB D’Eriq King

King returns as one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the entire country. The Manvel, TX native is entering his sixth season at the collegiate level. Over the course of his career, King has amassed over 7,600 passing yards and nearly 2,000 rushing yards.

King’s ability to create both inside and outside of the pocket with his feet could cause problems for this Alabama defense. King is the true definition of a dual-threat quarterback and he wouldn’t be the first player with that type of skill set to provide trouble for Tide defense.

Alabama’s “work in progress” offensive line

Alabama is replacing a great deal of talent and experience along the offensive line this season. Alex Leatherwood, Deonte Brown, and Landon Dickerson have all moved on to the NFL. With that being said, there is also a handful of players returning that have some experience. Evan Neal is entering his third season as a starter as he moves from right tackle to left tackle. Right guard Emil Ekiyor is also returning, and Chris Owens who is expected to get the start at center has also played a ton of football.

Alabama will also be starting a couple of players that are not that experienced in left guard Javion Cohen and right tackle Kendall Randolph. Randolph has played a lot of football at Alabama in a backup role, but now he is in the starting lineup and that is an entirely different challenge.

This is not to say that Alabama doesn’t have plenty of talent to get the job done, but this is the first game of the season and Miami returns a lot of experience in their front seven.

Maybe the most important ingredient for a good offensive line is continuity. If Alabama does not have that in this game, with Miami’s experience on defense, it could cause some problems for Bryce Young and the Alabama offense.

Previewing the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Miami Hurricanes

Alabama vs. Miami Preview and Prediction

The Alabama Crimson Tide and the Miami Hurricanes are two of the most storied programs in all of college football. Since 1980 Alabama has won seven national championships and Miami has won five.

Now, they are set to face off in Atlanta this Saturday in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. Alabama is currently an overwhelming favorite to beat the Hurricanes.

Miami Preview:

Miami returns 19 of 22 starters from a team that went 8-3 last season. Most notably they return star quarterback D’Eriq King. King is entering his sixth season at the collegiate level and has been one of the most dynamic playmakers at the position over the last few seasons. However, King is coming off an ACL injury that he sustained on December 29, 2020, in the bowl game against Oklahoma State. All indications are that King is healthy and ready to go, but until the lights come on and the bullets fly, it is hard to tell if someone is ready after coming back from such a serious injury.

Defensively, the Hurricanes return a good amount of production as well. Safety Bubba Bolden and defensive tackle Nesta Jade Silvera return to lead the defensive group for Manny Diaz.

King and the Miami defense will have to be at the top of their game to challenge Alabama.

Alabama Preview

It is no secret that Alabama is replacing a lot of star power on the offensive side of the ball. Mac Jones, Najee Harris, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, and Alex Leatherwood were all selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Sophomore Bryce Young is set to take the reigns of the Crimson Tide offense from Mac Jones at QB.

Alabama will most likely feature a stable of running backs to replace Najee Harris. Brian Robinson, Jase McClellan, and Trey Sanders seem to be players most primed to do so.

The receiver group added a talented transfer in Jameson Williams from Ohio State to pair with returning star John Metchie out wide. Alabama also brought in the best wide receiver class in the country this past spring lead by JoJo Earle and Agiye Hall.

The offensive line is also being re-worked with a couple of returning starters and other players who have some experience. Junior Evan Neal is back and will anchor the left side of the offensive line and is one of the top linemen in the entire country.

Defensively, Alabama is absolutely loaded with talent and experience at all three levels.

Along the defensive line, Alabama has anywhere between seven to nine players that could rotate in.

At linebacker, Alabama returns possibly the best outside linebacker duo in the entire country in Christopher Allen and Will Anderson. Then you look towards the middle of the defense and see Christian Harris paired with Tennessee transfer Henry To’o To’o, to make up a formidable pairing at inside linebacker.

In the back end of the Alabama defense, everyone is back with the exception of Patrick Surtain. Josh Jobe, Malachi Moore, Jordan Battle, and Brian Branch all return to make up a dynamic secondary for the Tide.

Overall Thoughts & Score Prediction

Alabama is the much more talented team on both sides of the ball. I expect Alabama to be able to run the ball with great consistency and in turn be able to connect on some deep play-action passes.

Score Prediction: Alabama 38 Miami 17
