Grading Alabama’s performance in convincing win over Tennessee

Taking a deeper look at how Alabama graded out in its win over Tennessee

Alabama’s 52-24 victory over Tennessee might be the most unusual 28 point win that I can remember. There were times when the offense seemed unstoppable, but there were also times they couldn’t get out of their own way. The defense was great other than about three or four plays. The special teams unit was really responsible for about 10 points that the Volunteers scored in the contest. So this really is a strange game to dissect.

Nevertheless, we are back for our weekly final grade post for the Tide’s performance. Let’s see how things turned out this week.

First … the offense…

What we learned from Alabama’s imposing win over Tennessee

Let’s take a look at a few things we learned from Alabama’s imposing win over the Tennesse Volunteers.

It wasn’t perfect, but No. 4 Alabama was able to gain a convincing 52-24 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday night.

At the end of the third quarter, Alabama held just a 24-17 lead but outscored the Vols 28-7 in the fourth.

After each contest, we take a look at a few things we learned from the Alabama performance. Let’s take a peek at what we learned this week.

WATCH: John Metchie speeds past the Tennessee defense to ice the game in Tuscaloosa.

John Metchie all but finished off the Tennessee Volunteers with a 19-yard touchdown reception from Bryce Young.

Young hit Metchie on a drag route across the middle of the field on 3rd and long, then turned on the afterburners to find the endzone.

Metchie now has 11 catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns on the day.

WATCH: Bryce Young eludes Tennessee defenders for a TD

No. 4 Alabama extends its lead on the Volunteers to 31-17 after quarterback Bryce Young eluded the Tennesse defense for a touchdown run.

Young has used his feet more tonight than any other game this season rushing for 42 yards with two touchdowns on the ground as well.

Bryce has been the only steady part of the offense tonight that seems out of sync and undisciplined.

Let’s see if Bryce and the offense can develop some chemistry here in the fourth quarter.

HALFTIME REPORT: Alabama survives rough first half, defense has issues to resolve

Alabama has the lead, but must play a more consistent game to close out.

Alabama looks to continue the win streak over the Tennessee Volunteers, which has lasted well over a decade, but they must first play a more disciplined style of football.

At the half, the Crimson Tide leads 21-14, but at one point lost the lead and was down by seven for a few minutes.

Star quarterback Bryce Young has played a solid game with 20 completions on 24 attempts for 207 yards and a touchdown. He also added a rushing touchdown, which helped give Alabama the lead.

Alabama’s run game, headlined by Brian Robinson, has proven mildly effective, with Robinson accumulating 13 carries, 58 yards and a single touchdown.

John Metchie has taken over as the team’s top wide receiver for the game, a position that often goes back and forth between him and Ohio State transfer Jameson Williams. Metchie has totaled six receptions for 63 yards and a lone touchdown.

Williams has a had a unique first half that was highlighted by a fumble in Tennessee territory. Overall, he has 4 receptions for 44 yards.

The defense has limited the Volunteers’ ground game, holding three ball carriers to 19 yards on only 11 carries.

Hendon Hooker has completed 11 of 15 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

The Crimson Tide secondary has not looked as disciplined as they have this season, missing assignments and not being properly aligned, especially in the red zone.

Nick Saban will look to have his team set up for success in the second half, and needs to have them play the remaining two quarters of football with a want to win.

WATCH: Bryce Young throws a beautiful pass to give Alabama the lead

An AMAZING pass by Bryce Young to John Metchie for the lead!

Alabama was down 14-7 in the second quarter to Tennessee, but has since regained the lead before halftime, courtesy of a great pass by Bryce Young.

With just a few yards before the goal line, a desired pass play had Young fit the ball into a tight window, right into the hands of John Metchie III.

A few minutes remaining until halftime, where the Crimson Tide will start with the ball.

WATCH: Bryce Young uses his legs to tie the game against Tennessee

Alabama responds with a Bryce Young run to tie the game up!

Alabama football has had a bit of a hectic first half, which led to a Tennessee lead over the Crimson Tide 14-7. However, after a solid defensive stand, and some help from the student section, the offense starts the drive with some great field position.

Young made sure to capitalize on the great opening to the drive, and reached the end zone.

There has been criticism in the past regarding Young’s hesitancy to run the ball, but he didn’t have any reservations from just a few yards away from the goal line.

He ran it in, after seeing no available options, and ties the game at 14 a piece with plenty of time left in the second quarter.

5 things to know about the Tennessee Vols

The Vols have found a new identity under new coach Josh Heupel. What do you need to know about them?

The Tennessee Volunteers are one of the Crimson Tide’s most hated rivals. For many people, beating Tennessee is more important than beating in-state rival Auburn.

I am one of those people. I can’t help but be reminded of former Tennessee head coach, and later athletics director Philip Fulmer diverting an NCAA investigation into his own program toward Alabama.

This lead to the uncovering of violations by the Crimson Tide, which the Vols were likely just as guilty of, that put the program on probation for five years and a two-year postseason ban for providing impermissible benefits to recruits.

But, I’m not here to dwell on the past. I’m here to give you five things we should know before the Crimson Tide takes the field against the Volunteers on Saturday.

After an electric first start, where does Caleb Williams land USA TODAY Sports QB rankings

With an awesome start to his career as the quarterback of the Oklahoma Sooners, where does Caleb Williams sit on USA TODAY Sports QB rankings.

There is not a single quarterback that has flipped the college football world on its head this season quite like Caleb Williams. After waiting in the wings while fans called for him to replace the starting quarterback he was behind on the depth chart, Williams galvanized his team in their biggest game against the Texas Longhorns.

Williams has seen a lot of press over the last three weeks. Well, that’s not going to stop as long as he continues to play as he has in his last six quarters.

His first start against TCU was scintillating and that’s earned him a spot in USA TODAY Sports list of top quarterbacks in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Paul Myerberg of USA Today has him listed at number seven behind the likes of Bryce Young, Matt Corral, Desmond Ridder, and C.J. Stroud. He also went on to say this:

The Sooners didn’t top 430 yards of offense in their first four games against Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Since Williams took over against Texas, OU has gone for 662 yards and 525 yards on 8.5 yards per play. The improvement on offense joins an improved defense to finally justify the preseason hype around the Sooners’ chances of winning the national title. – Myerburg

The belief that a second year of Spencer Rattler would allow the Sooners to take a major step forward offensively was a sound one. However, it never manifested that way due to a combination of factors. Regardless, Lincoln Riley has seemingly made the switch and Williams has people changing tunes about Oklahoma’s legitimacy as a contender for the national title.

Williams will have the chance to improve on this ranking this weekend as Oklahoma travels to face the lowly Kansas Jayhawks.

Another clinical performance like the one he produced against TCU could create a tidal wave of support for his Heisman candidacy.

One thing’s for certain, Caleb Williams will not likely stay at number seven as the season goes along.
