Highest-rated 2025 Duke football commit posts about North Carolina comeback

Four-star edge rusher Bryce Davis, the highest-rated Duke football commit in 247Sports history, posted about Saturday’s comeback over UNC.

It doesn’t sound like four-star 2025 edge rusher Bryce Davis regrets his decision to flip to the Duke Blue Devils.

Davis, who initially committed to the Clemson Tigers before changing to the Blue Devils in August, posted three devil emojis on X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) after Duke cemented its 21-20 victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday.

As a top-10 defensive lineman in his class and the No. 59 overall player in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Davis is comfortably the highest-rated player in the Blue Devils’ 2025 recruiting class. In fact, according to 247Sports, he’s the highest-rated commit in school history.

Davis had plenty of reasons to like what he saw from the Duke defensive front on Saturday. The Blue Devils made six tackles for loss against UNC, giving them 52 for the season through five games. Edge rusher Vincent Anthony Jr., another four-star prospect out of high school, finished with a sack and 2.5 TFLs by himself.

The Blue Devils won’t have Davis for another year, but head coach Manny Diaz still has the team off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 1994.

Newest Duke commit Bryce Davis is 247Sports’ highest-rated prospect in school history

Four-star 2025 edge rusher Bryce Davis became the highest-rated Duke commit in school history when he flipped from Clemson on Sunday.

Four-star 2025 edge rusher Bryce Davis changed the entire complexion of the Duke football recruiting class on Sunday when he flipped from Clemson, but he also made some program history in the process.

According to 247Sports, Davis is the highest-rated prospect to commit to the Blue Devils since tracking began in 2000.

Davis, a Greensboro native who plays for Grimsley High School, is the site’s No. 64 player and ninth-ranked edge rusher in the Class of 2025. He’s the third-best prospect from the state of North Carolina, and he becomes the 25th member of Duke’s 2025 class.

Davis initially committed to the Tigers back in July, but On3’s Collin Ginnan wrote that Davis debated between the Blue Devils and the Tigers until the final morning. Three national recruiting experts filed predictions for first-year Duke head coach Manny Diaz to secure the flip over the previous 48 hours, first 247Sports’ Tom Loy on Friday but On3’s Steve Wiltfong and Chad Simmons followed on Saturday.

Over his last two seasons for the Whirlies, Davis has logged 15 sacks and 30 tackles for loss in just 16 games.

Clemson loses major commitment from defensive end Bryce Davis, flips to Duke

Bryce Davis flips to Duke.

In a surprising turn of events, Bryce Davis has decided to change his commitment from Clemson to Duke, just under two months after initially choosing the Tigers.

Davis, a highly-touted 4-star defensive end from Grimsley High School in North Carolina, had initially committed to Clemson on July 20. His decision at the time came after considering other top programs, including Georgia, South Carolina, and Duke. Despite Duke showing strong interest before his original commitment, Davis had opted to join Dabo Swinney’s squad.

Over the past several weeks, however, Duke’s persistent recruiting efforts have paid off, leading to Davis flipping his commitment. He now becomes the first blue-chip prospect to join Duke’s 2025 recruiting class, a significant boost for the Blue Devils.

For Clemson, Davis’ decision is a notable loss. He was ranked No. 59 overall and No. 8 among defensive linemen in the 2025 class, according to the 247 Composite Rankings, making him one of the most highly-rated prospects in the Tigers’ recruiting efforts. His departure leaves Clemson with 14 verbal commitments for 2025.

This move underscores the increasingly competitive nature of college football recruiting, where nothing is certain until National Signing Day. Duke’s success in securing Davis signals a significant win for the program as they continue to build for the future.

Four-star 2025 edge rusher Bryce Davis officially flipped from the Clemson Tigers to the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday, according to multiple reports.

“I love the culture,” Davis told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. “I love the people, & I love what they are building at Duke. It’s time to be different. Bleed Blue.”

The news comes after three different national analysts (247Sports’ Tom Loy on Friday and On3’s Chad Simmons and Steve Wiltfong on Saturday) filed official predictions for first-year Duke coach Manny Diaz to secure the flip.

Davis initially chose Clemson over Duke in July, but an article from On3’s Collin Ginnan on Saturday said that the Greensboro native debated between the Tigers and Blue Devils until the morning of his announcement.

Davis is the No. 59 player in the entire class according to 247Sports Composite rankings, and the Grimsley High School product logged 15 sacks and 30 tackles for loss in just 16 games over the past two seasons. He’s one of the 10 highest-rated defensive linemen in the Class of 2025.

Davis now becomes the highest-ranked player in Duke’s 2025 recruiting class, the first four-star prospect among more than two dozen commitments. Three-star running back Nate Sheppard from Louisiana, the most recent Duke commitment, announced his decision on Friday.

Georgia target, top-50 recruit Bryce Davis sets commitment date

Four-star DL Bryce Davis, who is projected to commit to Georgia, plans to announce his decision soon

Bryce Davis, one of the nation’s top defensive lineman, considers Georgia among his final three schools. On Tuesday, Davis announced he will commit to UGA, Clemson or Duke on July 20.

Davis (6 feet, 3 inches, 245 pounds) plays for Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is rated as the No. 6 defensive lineman, the No. 4 player in his state and the No. 47 overall recruit in the 2025 class, per the 247Sports composite.

Davis is projected to commit to Georgia by 247Sports, On3 and Rivals. UGA head coach Kirby Smart and outside linebackers coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe visited Davis at Grimsley in January. Georgia’s staff is familiar with the school, having signed defensive tackle Jamaal Jarrett out of Grimsley in 2023.

It’s clear Davis values being close to home because he is also heavily considering Clemson and Duke. While Athens has the disadvantage there, Georgia’s development of defensive linemen can’t be ignored. The Bulldogs also value defensive front talent, focusing on developing those players out of high school rather than using the transfer portal to add depth.

Smart said as much in an interview this spring with CBS Sports’ Josh Pate.

“Can we create offensive and defensive line depths. I look across football. The game is changing. Less big guys are playing. Every NFL scout that comes in here says ‘we can’t find offensive linemen. We can’t find offensive linemen.’ Well, that’s what we do here. We recruit offensive linemen. We get big guys and we develop defensive linemen. There’s just less of them. There’s less big people. So we want to establish depth at both those positions.”

A slew of Georgia football recruiting targets are planning to announce their commitments in July.
