RB Pierre Strong Jr. ruled out of game with hamstring injury

Cleveland Browns backup running back Pierre Strong Jr. left the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a hamstring injury.

Cleveland Browns backup running back Pierre Strong Jr. left the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a hamstring injury. Strong played well for the Browns against the Jaguars. The running back played a few roles for the Browns including kick returner.

Strong has one carry for the Browns for -5 yards. The play was blown up behind the line of scrimmage and Strong was tackled as soon as he got the handoff. Strong caught one pass for ten yards. Strong looked decisive and strong when he returned a kickoff for 25 yards.

Hopefully, Strong’s injury isn’t too serious. The talented running back is trying to carve out some playing time in a deep group. The Browns running back room got an influx of talent against the Jaguars. D’Onta Foreman started the game for the Browns. Jerome Ford is leading the Browns’ rushing attack with 62 yards on six carries.

The Browns are currently leading the Jaguars 16-3 near the end of the third quarter.

Browns WR David Bell carted off with hip injury vs. Jaguars

Cleveland Browns wide receiver David Bell left the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a hip injury. He will not return.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver David Bell left the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a hip injury. Bell injured his hip when he was tackled by Jaguars’ defensive tackle Arik Armstead. Bell left the field on the injury cart keeping his right leg elevated. He has been ruled out with a hip injury.

Bell re-signed with the team earlier this week after being placed on the practice squad before the Browns home opener. Bell was a surprise cut heading into the first game. The move was made to foster some roster shuffling ahead of the Cowboys game.

Bell played well in his first game back with the team. The wide receiver caught all three targets for 27 yards in the first half. Bell is a trustworthy target for quarterbacks despite his limited athleticism. The offense will miss his consistency.

The Browns’ offense started hot against the Jaguars. The Browns are leading the Jaguars 16-3 at the start of the second half.

Browns Injury Alert: C Ethan Pocic leaves Jaguars game with injury

Cleveland Browns starting center Ethan Pocic exited the Jacksonville Jaguars game during the first quarter with an injury.

Cleveland Browns starting center Ethan Pocic exited the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars during the first quarter. Pocic was executing a block when he fell and got caught in the scrum. Pocic walked off the field under his own power and went immediately to the medical tent. Pocic walked into the locker room a couple of minutes after.

Starting fullback Nick Harris is Pocic’s backup. The veteran Harris has been the backup center since he was drafted. Harris is a capable center, he previously started against the Green Bay Packers on Christmas day. He played very well against Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

The Browns have been plagued by injury all year. Rookie tackle Dawand Jones was surprisingly ruled out earlier this week after he reaggravated a knee injury.

UPDATE: Pocic has been diagnosed with a stinger and is questionable to return.

Browns QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson clears concussion protocols

Cleveland Browns rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson cleared the concussion protocols prior to week 14 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson cleared concussion protocols on Friday. Thompson-Robinson was in the protocol for ten days following the Denver Broncos game. It’s unclear if Thompson-Robinson will play against the Jacksonville Jaguars as head coach Kevin Stefanski declined to name a starting quarterback before Sunday. There are many good arguments to start either Joe Flacco or Thompson-Robinson.

The Browns need as many players as they can get from their injured list. The team was depleted of its talents at various points throughout the season. The Browns have done a fantastic job, winning games and remaining focused during these trials.

The team will be prepared to play against the Jaguars no matter who starts at quarterback. It’s good to have options at the most important position, but the team needs a consistent leader to rally behind. The offense needs to find its stride.

Wide receiver Amari Cooper returned to practice today as he continues going through the concussion protocol. The Browns are optimistic that he will play on Sunday. Hopefully, the Browns have a healthy passing attack when they take on the Jaguars.

Browns Vs. Jaguars: Looking at the stats, Browns controlled the game

The Browns controlled the Jaguars throughout their opening preseason game and some stats proved it:

The Cleveland Browns controlled the preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars even more than the 23 – 13 final score showed. Without all of their starters and most of their key veteran contributors, the Browns stayed in command despite the Jaguars playing many of their starters.

Taking a look at the box score really showed how much Cleveland had control of the game. A few things that stood out with the Browns having the better stat in all of them:

  • Time of possession: 33:08 to 26:52
  • Penalties: 3 to 7
  • Punts: 2 to 4
  • Yards: 360 to 302
  • Sacks: 1 to 4
  • Third down conversion: 59% to 47%
  • Turnovers: 1 (Browns had one other overturned) to 0
  • Passing yard per attempt: 7.4 to 5.9

In the end, the Browns vs. Jaguars game was the tale of two teams at different points in their development. Jacksonville hopes to be where Cleveland is in a few years. They hope Urban Meyer and Trevor Lawrence will be comparable to Kevin Stefanski and Baker Mayfield.

Saturday night, the Jags weren’t even comparable to the Browns second and third stringers much less the starters. Cleveland controlled the game thoroughout and it showed.

Browns redzone offense struggles: Concerning?

Redzone struggles in the first preseason game aren’t worth worrying about, yet, given last year’s redzone success.

The Cleveland Browns had a very good game against the Jacksonville Jaguars despite not playing almost all of their starters and key contributors. On offense Saturday night, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Rashard Higgins were the only two guys to play that are expected to play regular snaps.

The offense put up good numbers passing the ball (319 yards) while struggling to get the running game going (41 yards).

The biggest concern came in the redzone where the team was 1 of 4 in converting for a touchdown. Late in the fourth quarter, quarterback Kyle Lauletta hit Ryan Switzer for a seven-yard touchdown pass. Prior to that, the Browns settled for field goals of 37, 34 and 27 yards.

While taken with a grain of salt given the players not on the field, redzone success will always be important to watch. That becomes especially true for the kind of offense that Kevin Stefanski runs with the wide zone running scheme.

The wide zone running scheme is, generally, less successful in the redzone due to the crowding of defenders in the box. It is much more difficult to create lanes for the running back when all 11 defenders are close to the line of scrimmage.

In the passing game, the play-action pass can be successful inside the five-yard line, given defenders’ attempt to stop the rushing attack, but can be more difficult with 10 to 20 yards to go due to the tight windows and quick decisions needed to be made.

Last year, the Cleveland offense was great in the redzone despite the first-year installation of the offense. One of the most important reasons for this success, besides the talent on the team, is Stefanski’s willingness to use a variety of schemes to be successful. While a heavy wide zone scheme and play-action team, Stefanski didn’t force that especially in the redzone.

The Browns struggled to put up touchdowns in the redzone in their first preseason game. Given last year’s success at doing so, nothing to be concerned about but something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah shows upside in 3 plays

How JOK shone brightly in his first preseason game and showed his upside in just three plays:

The Cleveland Browns second, third and fourth team players took care of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and most of their starters, quite easily on Saturday night. The offense was mostly crisp with Case Keenum and Kyle Lauletta running the show while the defense gave up yards but made some timely plays.

Without almost all of their starters (Andrew Billings may have been the only Week 1 starter to play), there was room for others to make a big impression.

The rookie class for the Browns did that with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah shining the brightest. While the Notre Dame rookie looked small and had some trouble disengaging blocks, it was his speed that jumped off the screen on Saturday night. While he may never be a thudding, run-stopping middle linebacker, that isn’t what he will be asked to do.

Instead, it was the things he was drafted to do where he showed out against the Jaguars. Here are three plays that show the upside that led him to be a second-round pick that many believe was a steal to get him so low:

Browns Vs. Jaguars preseason game: 3 hopes for Cleveland

While meaningless, tonight’s Browns vs Jags game still has Cleveland with things they hope to see.

When the Cleveland Browns face off with the Jacksonville Jaguars, nothing will be on the line. The first preseason game, of three this year, will not count for anything for either team.

That doesn’t mean the game itself won’t have meaning for both teams. For the Jaguars, implementation of what Urban Meyer wants to see for his team will be the highest priority.

For the Browns, Saturday night is the first in what the team hopes is at least 23 times (3 preseason, 17 regular season, at least 3 postseason plus a bye) they will kick off a game in the 2021 season. For Cleveland, this is just the start of something much, much bigger.

While the game itself is meaningless, there are a few things that the Browns will hope for coming out of the game.
