Browns place Olivier Vernon, Nick Harris on injured reserve

Vernon had been the Browns best defender over the last 8 weeks

Olivier Vernon’s season is officially over now. The Browns placed the starting defensive end on injured reserve with his torn Achilles tendon. Vernon suffered the injury in the Week 17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Browns also placed rookie offensive lineman Nick Harris on the I.R. Harris has a knee injury that kept him out of Week 17 after he picked up his first career start in Week 16 at right guard.

Cleveland also placed left guard Joel Bitonio and wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge on the reserve/COVID-19 list effective on Tuesday. Both players tested positive for the coronavirus. That means they are eligible to be activated prior to the divisional round of the postseason if the Browns beat Pittsburgh on Sunday in the wild-card round.

Olivier Vernon tore his Achilles, will miss the postseason

Vernon had 8 sacks in the final 8 games

Monday’s medical update brought some bad news on Browns defensive end Olivier Vernon. He will be out for Sunday’s wild-card game, and potentially much longer, in Pittsburgh after tearing his Achilles tendon.

Vernon left Sunday’s win over Pittsburgh with a lower leg injury. He was on the field for several minutes and unable to put weight on his left leg as he left for the locker room with trainers.

Coach Kevin Stefanski indicated in his postgame press conference that Vernon would have an MRI on the injured ankle. The results were not positive for the veteran to get back on the field for the postseason. t

Vernon has been great over the second half of the season, bagging eight sacks and a safety in the final eight games, including one on Mason Rudolph on Sunday.

In other injury news, rookie wide receiver and punt returner Donovan Peoples-Jones suffered a concussion during the game. His status for the Sunday night wild-card game is not yet determined.

Final Browns injury report for Week 17: Wyatt Teller questionable, Nick Harris out

The Browns are very thin at OG and LB facing the Steelers

Already facing the loss of some players due to COVID-19, the Cleveland Browns could be in a real depth pickle in Sunday’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Based on the week’s final injury report, the offensive guard and linebacker positions are in real peril.

Wyatt Teller, the regular starting right guard, is questionable with his ankle injury. Teller has missed the last two games and his presence has been sorely missed.

If he can’t go, the Browns are in serious peril. With regular backup Chris Hubbard on I.R. after suffering a major knee injury, the Browns will also be without rookie Nick Harris, who started for Teller in Week 16. Harris has been ruled out for Sunday with a knee injury of his own. Michael Dunn is the only other reserve interior lineman.

At LB, Tae Davis is questionable with an ankle injury. Davis primarily plays on special teams, though he did see some action against the Jets. Sione Takitaki, who has played well of late, is also questionable with an ankle injury. Takitaki played through the injury in New York.

Also listed as questionable: reserve OT Kendall Lamm (illness). No other players carry any designation into Sunday’s game at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Jedrick Wills, Wyatt Teller expected back at Browns practice

Wills’ return to practice is less certain than Teller’s

There is one practice session left for the Cleveland Browns in the calendar year 2020, and there should be two very big additions to the festivities in Berea on New Year’s Eve. The Browns expect starting offensive linemen Jedrick Wills and Wyatt Teller back on the practice field on Thursday.

Teller was going to make his return on Wednesday but the team had to close the facility due to the positive COVID-19 diagnosis of practice squad player Javon Patterson and an unidentified assistant coach. Teller has missed the last two weeks with an ankle injury. The right guard has been sorely missed in the run game.

Wills is healthy enough to practice again after missing most of the last two weeks with an illness. The rookie left tackle was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday but then took ill and missed Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. He has not practiced since the leadup to the Week 15 matchup with the New York Giants.

Browns activate Ronnie Harrison from I.R.

Harrison comes back in time to play in Week 17

The Browns added some much-needed reinforcement to the secondary on Wednesday. Cleveland activated safety Ronnie Harrison off the injured reserve list, and he will be in the lineup for the Week 17 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Harrison has missed the last four games with a shoulder injury suffered on the first drive against the Jacksonville Jaguars, who traded the third-year safety to Cleveland earlier this summer. He was designated for return from I.R. last week but wasn’t quite ready to play in New York. The Browns have sorely missed his steady presence.

With starting safety Andrew Sendejo already ruled out due to COVID-19, getting Harrison back means the Browns will have at least one regular member of the safety corps on the field. Karl Joseph is currently on the reserve/COVID-19 list but can be activated before Sunday’s game as long as he continues to test negative.

Final Browns injury report for Week 16: Wyatt Teller out. Malcolm Smith questionable

The Browns are relatively healthy headed to New York

The final Cleveland Browns injury report for the Week 16 trip to New York to face the 1-13 Jets ruled out just one player.

Following Friday’s practice session, the Browns released the final injury update of the week and designations for Sunday’s game. Right guard Wyatt Teller is the only player ruled out. His ankle injury is expected to also keep him out in Week 17, though that is unofficial at this point.

Linebacker Malcolm Smith is the only other player with any injury designation. He is questionable with a hamstring injury. Smith was a limited participant all week after playing in last Sunday’s win over the Giants.

Right tackle Jack Conklin and center JC Tretter were both limited all week in practice but carry no injury designation into the matchup with the Jets.

Browns injury update: Wyatt Teller still sits, 9 players limited in practice

Sheldon Richardson and Malcolm Smith returned after being out on Wednesday

Christmas Eve saw the Cleveland Browns practice indoors due to inclement weather in Berea. It also saw several Browns sitting out at least part of the scheduled practice session.

Nine different players were listed as limited by the Browns in the post-practice injury report.

For two of the players, it was an upgrade from Wednesday’s “did not practice status. Both DT Sheldon Richardson (neck) and LB Malcolm Smith (hamstring) were back on the field as limited participants.

The remaining limited players:

  • RT Jack Conklin (knee)
  • RB D’Ernest Johnson (groin)
  • CB Kevin Johnson (knee/groin)
  • WR KhaDarel Hodge (hamstring)
  • C JC Tretter (knee)
  • CB Denzel Ward (calf)
  • LB Sione Takitaki (knee)

The only player sitting out fully was right guard Wyatt Teller with his ankle injury. He is not expected to play in Week 16 or Week 17.

Sheldon Richardson expected to play for Browns vs. Jets

Coach Stefanski indicated he expects the DT to play vs. his old team in New York

Head coach Kevin Stefanski sure seems to believe that defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson will be on the field and ready to roll when the Browns take on the New York Jets on Sunday. Richardson’s status is up in the air at this point after the veteran defensive tackle suffered a neck injury while making a tackle in the Browns win over the Giants on Sunday night.

Stefanski was asked if Richardson was being held out of Wednesday’s practice for simple precautionary reasons and not a serious injury. He acknowledged that was the case.

Richardson is a former Jet who spent the first four years of his career in New York. He was the Jets’ first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Missouri and earned his one career Pro Bowl berth in 2014 with New York.

Coach Stefanski also revealed that safety Andrew Sendejo has been cleared from the concussion protocol and will be a full participant at practice.

Chris Hubbard is out for the season with torn knee ligaments

Hubbard had played well as the Browns’ top reserve lineman

The Cleveland Browns suffered a key loss in the Sunday night win over the New York Giants. Offensive lineman Chris Hubbard went down with a knee injury early in Browns win in New York.

Hubbard tweeted out a hopeful message after the game but it turned out to be the worst-case scenario for the team for the rest of the 2020 season. Further evaluation revealed that Hubbard suffered torn ligaments in the knee and his season is over.

“Hub has given us great reps, not good reps, great reps as a versatile player,” coach Kevin Stefanski said on Monday. “He is an outstanding teammate. We will miss him in the time that he misses but in terms of the whole picture of the injury, I will wait to put out something official.”

Hubbard was starting at right guard for Wyatt Teller, who is dealing with an ankle injury of his own. The veteran has been the team’s top reserve lineman, playing both tackle and guard in relief duties. It was a good role for the former starting right tackle.

He will be replaced by rookie Nick Harris for as long as Teller remains sidelined. The fifth-rounder from Washington played well in his NFL debut on Sunday night in relief of Hubbard. Harris has primarily been the backup center behind veteran JC Tretter.

Browns RG Chris Hubbard leaves with knee injury on 2nd offensive snap

Hubbard is initially ruled as questionable to return

The Browns suffered what could be a problematic injury on the second offensive snap in the Sunday night matchup in New York. Starting right guard Chris Hubbard went down in obvious pain with a knee injury.

Hubbard walked off with minor assistance from trainers and quickly headed to the locker room. He wasn’t limping much but was clearly favoring the knee as he headed to the training room.

It’s a critical injury because Hubbard was starting in place of regular starter Wyatt Teller, who is out with an ankle injury.

Rookie Nick Harris stepped in at right guard for Hubbard. Harris is primarily the backup center behind JC Tretter but did play guard in college at Washington.
