Prediction

Cavaliers 106, Nets 101

Moneyline (ML)

The CAVALIERS (-115) aren’t a huge risk as long as Love is on the floor. He has been in and out of the lineup due to a back ailment. The good news for the Cavs is the Nets (-106) won’t have the services of their old friend Irving.

New to sports betting? Every $1 wagered on a Cleveland win profits $0.87 if the Cavs prevail. (Ex: Bet $10 to win $8.70, $20 to win $17.40, $5.35 to win $10).

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Take the CAVALIERS (-1.5, –106) on their home floor. Even without Love, they have a more than decent chance of winning, although his inclusion gives them much better odds to win.

The Nets (+1.5, -115) are just too shorthanded right now, and they’re a very subpar basketball team with their two big offseason signings each in street clothes.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 217.5 (-110) is a great play, as the trends point to the Under for both sides. In fact, this is the best wager for this entire game. The Under has cashed in four in a row for Brooklyn, and seven of the past 10 in the second end of a back-to-back situation.

The Under is 5-2 in the past seven against the Eastern Conference for Cleveland, while going 4-0 in their past four after a cover and 7-1 in their past eight following a straight-up win.

Prediction

Nets 107, Knicks 96

Moneyline (ML)

The NETS (-139) have enough firepower to easily get past the rival Knicks, even without Irving. The Knicks won’t have much of a home-court advantage and they enter Sunday off of a 111-104 loss to the San Antonio Spurs Saturday at MSG. The Nets haven’t played since winning 116-97 over the Sacramento Kings on Friday.

Brooklyn is 2-5 on the road while New York is 3-5 at home. The Nets won 113-109 in the first meeting between the two this season in Brooklyn. Irving led the way with 26 points and five assists, but four other players scored in double figures for the Nets.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Brooklyn to win outright fetches a profit of $7.20.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Get slightly better value with the NETS (-1.5, -121) on the spread. They’ll need to win by just two or more points, as they did in late October and in all seven of their victories on the season.

Brooklyn is 7-8 overall ATS and 3-4 ATS on the road. New York is 8-8 overall but just 3-5 at MSG. Only one of the Knicks’ losses this season was by a single point.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 213.5 (-106) as this game is missing the best player for either side in Irving. The Knicks are second-to-last in the league with an Over percentage of just 31.2. They’ve gone 5-11 against the projected totals and fall an average of 3.4 points shy of the number.

The Nets are 7-8 against the O/U but top the projection by 2.4 points on average. Brooklyn will pull away in the fourth quarter against the tired Knicks, but the separation will hinder the point total.

The ups and downs of the NBA’s 2020 season so far

Report: Kyrie Irving is out Friday against the Sacramento Kings

Kyrie Irving will miss his fourth straight consecutive game Friday night due to a right shoulder impingement.

The Brooklyn Nets will be without All-Star guard Kyrie Irving on Friday night against the Sacramento Kings, per the New York Post’s Brian Lewis.

Irving is out with a right shoulder impingement injury that has sidelined him the previous three games.

When Irving doesn’t play this season, the Nets are 2-1. With Irving being new to the team, there will be an adjustment period when it comes to creating new chemistry.

Irving is a different guard compared to former Nets guard D’Angelo Russell. Irving feeds on isolations; Russell thrives in making plays in the pick-and-roll.

Still, Irving has been the Nets’ leading scorer this season, averaging 28.5 points per game on 44.4% shooting from the field.

And while Irving is averaging a career-high 7.2 assists, he remains one of the top isolation scorers in the game. According to NBA.com, Irving is averaging 3.5 points in isolation on 3.5 field goal attempts. Spencer Dinwiddie is the Nets’ best scorer after Irving, but he’s not shooting a quality percentage from the field at 41.4%.

At 6-8 through 14 games, the Nets have had a slow start to the season. They’re ranked 18th in field goal percentage (44.7) and 22nd in 3-point field goal percentage (34.0).

Overall, it’s going to take time for the Nets and Irving to jell, as the offense is slightly different compared to when Russell was at the helm.

Stephen A. Smith says he’s hearing troubling reports about Kyrie Irving’s attitude

Stephen A. Smith says negative reports about Kyrie Irving’s attitude are circulating.

Kyrie Irving’s temperament has been an ongoing storyline early in the NBA season, and according to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, Irving’s attitude could be an issue in Brooklyn, where the Nets have gotten off to a 6-8 start.

On October 28th, Jackie MacMullan published an extensive piece on the Nets that included a controversial tidbit from Nets team sources. According to that source, Irving is prone to mood swings, and can “shut down” on the team.

Via ESPN:

“When Irving lapses into these funks, he often shuts down, unwilling to communicate with the coaching staff, front office and, sometimes, even his teammates. Nets team sources say one such episode occurred during Brooklyn’s trip to China, leaving everyone scratching their heads as to what precipitated it.”

Irving responded to the report by noting that he’s a human being, and that everyone goes through mood changes. Kevin Durant defended his teammate during an appearance on First Take, and said that the Nets have had no problems at all with Irving as a teammate.

On Thursday, though, Smith said on First Take that he’s continuing to hear negative things about Kyrie Irving’s attitude from sources.

“I am not hearing good things about Kyrie in Brooklyn. I’m talking about you’re hearing [things]… you’re just hearing about the mood. People are putting stuff out there. I don’t think it’s fair, I don’t know accurate it is. But I am telling, if Kyrie’s listening, I’m telling you there is stuff circulating out there about him from an attitude perspective.”

The Brooklyn Nets are 1-1 without Kyrie Irving, Wednesday the team will be without the point guard again when it plays the Charlotte Hornets (6-8).

Irving was initially listed as questionable ahead of the Nets (5-8) game versus the Nuggets on Nov. 15 because of right shoulder impingement. The 27-year-old played through the pain in Denver but did not take the court for the team’s next game Saturday versus the Bulls. The Nets still managed to pick up and eight-point win in Chicago without Irving, but did not fair as well versus the Pacers Monday and fell 115-86.

Spencer Dinwiddie is starting at point guard with Irving out. Dinwiddie scored 24 points in Saturday’s win on 5-for-11 shooting (0-for-4 from three). He added 28 points in Monday’s loss with 9-for-21 shooting (4-for-8 from three).

Joe Harris thinks Nets’ problem has been the same game-to-game

The Brooklyn Nets are struggling to put together a solid 48-minute effort on a night-to-night basis.

Monday’s game was very winnable for the Brooklyn Nets. Although the 115-86 finish may indicate otherwise, the Indiana Pacers were without multiple key pieces. While the Nets didn’t have Kyrie Irving and Caris LeVert, the combination of Spencer Dinwiddie, Joe Harris and Taurean Prince, with contributions from others, should’ve been able to put Brooklyn over the top.

But the offense wasn’t there, particularly in the first half. Though, while Brooklyn’s poor shooting didn’t help the situation, it wasn’t necessarily the driving force behind the loss.

After holding the Pacers to 18 points in the first quarter, the Nets allowed them to score 41 in the second, creating a 59-35 gap at the half.

Harris attributes Brooklyn’s miserable second quarter, and the loss on the whole, to the reoccurring issue the Nets have had:

It’s frustrating because it’s sort of been the same scenario for a lot of the season where we haven’t put a full 48 minutes together. Tonight, second quarter, obviously [a] big lapse defensively. Big lapse on the defensive glass. But it’s a lot of stuff where, you know, you come in prepared, game plan is there, coaches have you ready and then it’s just sort of a lack of energy on our part. And that’s why it’s frustrating.

Harris elaborated further on why this problem isn’t something the Nets should be dealing with:

There’s a lotta stuff that’s out of your control when you play, but the things that are in your control are competing every possession, playing hard every possession, you know, having that sense of urgency, the ownership, the pride, and a lot of that stuff is just not there with us right now. It’s there in lapses, but it’s not there consistently.

As for why this is happening, Harris doesn’t have an explanation:

If we knew we’d be playing at a pretty high level, obviously. I think you go through waves, like any team, over the course of the season where you’re gonna have a stretch of really good games where it is there relatively consistently. ‘Cause if we can do it for even 38, 40 minutes, you know, you’re going to put yourself in position to win a lot of games. It’s when you have the big lapses like we had tonight and like we’ve had up until this point in the season.
