Social Media reacts to the sights of Provo ahead of Oklahoma Sooners vs. BYU Cougars

Sooner Nation has descended upon Provo for Oklahoma vs. BYU and shared the incredible sights on Social Media.

When the Big 12 released the schedule for the 2023 football season, the road date that many Oklahoma fans were excited about was the Sooners’ trip to Provo, Utah to take on the BYU Cougars.

The Oklahoma Sooners are a couple of hours from kickoff, but Sooner Nation has already been taking in the sights from Provo, Utah.

The mountain scenery of Utah, the backdrop of Lavell Edwards Stadium, and the excitement of the many Sooner fans who have made the trip to support the team sets the stage for a big road crowd for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Ahead of the Sooners’ final road trip of the season, here’s how social media reacted to the sights of Provo, Utah.

BYU presents a new challenge to Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners will experience a first in their final Big 12 road trip.

The Oklahoma Sooners have fielded a football team for 129 years, but they have never played in the state of Utah.

That is until they make the trip to Provo, Utah, to face Big 12 newcomer, the [autotag]BYU Cougars[/autotag] this Saturday. The Sooners have faced the Cougars two other times in their program’s history, losing both. Both of those games were played at neutral sites.

It’s also a first for Brent Venables. In his 30 years of coaching, he’s never coached a game in Provo against the BYU Cougars.

He spoke with the media about this new experience.

“It’s an incredibly tradition-rich program,” Venables said. “It has been for such a long time. They have one of the most loyal and passionate fan bases in all of college football. All of the college football history and excellence that’s represented, players, coaches and wins at BYU. You’ve always seen the picture probably if you like college football. There’s a picture of the stadium nestled down in the mountains and valley there.”

The Sooners will take on the Cougars in a familiar timeslot for them but an unfamiliar one for the Cougars. It will be a 10 a.m. kickoff out there, which is 11 a.m. back here at home. The Cougars haven’t played that early in over a decade.

The Sooners also avoided a night game in Provo. The Cougars are 17-2 in their last 19 night games. This is shaping up for what should be a Sooner win, but that’s why they play the game.

Jets’ Kaufusi bothers help their mayor mom in social distancing video

Jets’ Bronson and Corbi Kaufusi use their six-foot frames to help their mom, Michelle, show the citizens of Provo what social distancing is.

Social distancing is crucial in stopping the spread of the coronavirus and ensuring the NFL season starts on time. The idea is that everyone should keep at least six feet between each other to curb the human-to-human transmission of the virus.

But six feet is hard to visualize, sometimes, so the mayor of Provo, Utah, Michelle Kaufusi enlisted her NFL sons – Jets defensive linemen Bronson and Corbin Kaufusi – to give her citizens a visual representation of an appropriate social distance. Mayor Kaufusi urged everyone to stay at least a “Kaufusi” away from one another when leaving the house.

As you can see below, the Kaufsui brothers are actually a lot taller than six feet. Bronson is 6-foot-6 and Corbin is 6-foot-9. That extra length, though, helps reinforce the notion of how to keep yourself and others safe during this pandemic.

The Kaufusi family has deep ties to Provo. Michelle was born and raised in the city before becoming mayor in 2017 and her husband, Steve Kaufusi, is a former Philadephia Eagles defensive lineman who went to and coached the Brigham Young football team. Michelle, Bronson, Corbin and their third brother, Devin, all attended BYU as well.

Both Bronson and Corbin played on a crowded Jets’ defensive line and didn’t see much action in 2019. Bronson played in only three games, in which he recorded half a sack and three tackles. Corbin played on the practice squad this past season and signed a  reserve/future contract in December.
