Bronny James could miss season after suffering a torn meniscus

Bronny, the oldest son of LeBron James, reportedly underwent surgery recently to repair a torn meniscus in his knee.

Bronny James, the oldest son of LeBron James, recently underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee and could miss the entire season for Sierra Canyon High School, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

James, who is a five-star recruit in the class of 2023, reportedly suffered the injury earlier this month in practice but is expected to make a full recovery following surgery. He confirmed the injury during a live stream on Twitch with his followers.

Sierra Canyon has not yet played basketball this season due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, the school is expected to play at some point in the future during the spring once California permits indoor high school competition.

His return to play will be dependent on his recovery and when basketball will resume again in California.

Bronny spent part of the NBA offseason training with his father in Los Angeles. He looked to be visibly taller standing next to LeBron compared to some of his older photos. The 16-year-old has previously said that he is 6-foot-2 but he has likely grown since then.

Bronny James undergoes surgery on ‘serious’ knee injury

Bronny James recently underwent surgery on a torn meniscus that could cost him his sophomore season.

Bronny James, the highly-touted son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, recently underwent surgery to repair what is being deemed a “serious” knee injury.

According to Tarek Fattal of the Los Angeles Daily News, the sophomore sensation out of Sierra Canyon (Calif.) required surgery to repair a torn meniscus suffered nearly three weeks ago. He is expected to make a full recovery, but the injury is likely season-ending. The current status of high school basketball in California could enable James to return to the floor late in the spring season, though, as the state has yet to permit indoor competition.

James appeared for 34 games in Sierra Canyon as a freshman, averaging 4.1 points in 15 minutes per game playing alongside Kentucky freshman BJ Boston, Stanford freshman Ziaire Williams and Zaire Wade, son of former NBA star Dwayne Wade. In December, James scored 15 points and earned game MVP honors after hitting a game-winning layup late in the game against his father’s alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary high school. ESPN aired 15 of Sierra Canyon’s games during James’ first high school season.

James is currently the No. 25 recruit and No. 5 combo guard in the class of 2023 according to 247Sports.

“Athletically, James is impressive, and he’s continued to become more athletic over the last year,” former 247Sports Evan Daniels analyst said in James’ scouting report. “Where he impresses the most is with his feel for the game, vision and passing. While he’s projecting as an off-guard/combo for now, the passing ability makes you wonder if he could eventually slide over to full-time point guard with development.

Top Class: What is it like to be the first person to interview Bronny James?

Top Class director Tevin Tavares shared his experiences about what it was like to create the documentary series about Sierra Canyon.

In the upcoming documentary series, “Top Class: The Life and Times of the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers,” releasing February 26 on Amazon Prime Video, we get an intimate look at the raucous environment that followed every move of the most famous high school basketball team in the country. Viewers are also given their first look into what it’s like to be Bronny James, approved by the James family.

Top Class Director Tevin Tavares doesn’t take the trust he’s been given from the James family lightly. He knows just how special it is to be the first person to conduct an on-camera interview with Bronny.

“He’s guarded,” Tavares said about the James family’s approach to telling the story of Bronny’s basketball career. “That’s the one thing I will say that I respect about Savannah and LeBron, they make sure that they control the story. Because the amount of questions that reporters would ask him would be wild.”

Bronny typifies the experience for many of the Canyon players. They may have massive followings, but the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers are still kids.

“I think he’s humble, he’s smart, intelligent, funny, he loves his siblings. He’s still a kid,” Tavares says. “But he takes the pressure so well. And he’s respectful. Every time he saw me and the crew he would say what’s up. He would always joke around on camera. Sometimes he would have the VHS, sometimes Bryce would have the VHS recording stuff. Good, good kid.”

But as Tavares conveys in Top Class exceptionally well, Bronny is one part of an incredibly unique moment in time and a unique program in the country. Sierra Canyon’s basketball team operates almost like a European soccer club, finding players from all over the country and even China, to win at the highest level.

But it’s also a high school, one which the kids like Amari Bailey point out, that is geared towards the success of their students by having small class sizes.

“One day these kids are in Biology class and then the next day they’ve got 17,000 people screaming at them,” Tavares said.

Among some of the more poignant moments in the documentary involve Bailey, who puts on a show when the TrailBlazers make their trip to China after reflecting on how incredible it is to have made it all the way around the world because of a basketball. At 15 years old. Tavares felt a special connection with Bailey.

“Amari is an Aquarius and I’m an Aquarius as well. We didn’t even know if he was going to be featured on camera when we started. But as the season went on and on, the camera started getting more of him and when we sat down with him, he’s so smart. And he was only a sophomore, he was giving me so many gems and I was saying, this kid is light years ahead of his age.”

Perhaps if there’s one constant thread in the story is the struggle these kids face as basketball players with more fans than NBA teams and also the desire to simply be a kid.

And for Tavares, 26, he still finds himself in awe of the moment he was able to capture because of what started as his 18-year old dream. He first got inspired to become a filmmaker because of the legendary “Ringmaker” commercial that Nike made after LeBron James won his first championship ring. That he’s now directed a documentary series executive produced by LeBron, featuring his son, makes it feel “full circle,” as he experienced things he’d ever seen before in sports.

“In Virginia, there was an energy there that was like a college basketball game and a Super Bowl. There was an MC. Like NBA Street type of stuff. It felt like I was at a concert. I played sports all of my life and I had never experienced anything like that before at an NBA game.”

Of course, the Life and Times of the Trailblazers were not all increased followers, adoring fans and a lot of fun. We get to see the not-so-great side to being the son of a superstar with Zaire Wade, but we also see the heartwarming moments when his teammates hold him up.

We also see the team at a time of tragedy across the world following Kobe Bryant’s death, including an intimate look at LeBron James during his first public appearance after Bryant’s death, at a Sierra Canyon game in which they honored Bryant. The team also comes to grips with having their opportunity to win a state championship canceled due to the coronavirus.

There’s been no shortage of coverage of Bronny or Sierra Canyon. But what Top Class is able to do is cut through the noise and bring you an authentic and artistic look at a special group of kids, who both belies the maturity of professionals but also the natural desire to still be a kid while they can.

COVID-19 issues scrap Emoni Bates, Bronny James matchup

Saturday’s highly-anticipated matchup between No. 1 recruit Emoni Bates and Bronny James will not be played as originally scheduled.

Saturday’s highly-anticipated matchup between No. 1 recruit Emoni Bates and Bronny James will not be played as originally scheduled.

James and other Sierra Canyon (Calif.) stars will not play in the “The Battle” in Fort Worth, Texas this weekend with COVID-19 issues keeping their club team (CBC) from attending. James and his teammates were slated to do battle with Bates and the newly-formed Ypsilanti Prep Academy in a nationally-televised matchup on Fox Sports 1. Ypsi Prep will now play Coronado High School (Calif.).

RELATED: Led by star player Emoni Bates, Michigan’s new basketball academy will play Bronny James’ team

This is the second time a game between Sierra Canyon and Ypsi Prep has been canceled this season. The two were supposed to meet in November, but Sierra Canyon canceled because of COVID-19 concerns.

Bates, a five-star recruit and the top prospect in the class of 2022 according to 247Sports, is committed to Michigan State and is projected to be the first pick in the NBA draft whenever he becomes eligible to enter (current NBA draft rules require a player to be at least one year removed from high school before declaring, but that could change as early as 2022).

Ypsi Prep’s roster also features seven Division I recruits, including four-star 2022 shooting guards JaVaughn Hannah and Dillon Hunter and four-star center Shawn Phillips.

Bates and James have squared off before on the Nike EYBL AAU circuit, with Bates exploding for 43 points with LeBron James in attendance.

LeBron: Entering free agency after Bronny’s high school graduation ‘best thing’ about new extension

LeBron James believes that lining up his extension with his oldest son’s graduation is the “best thing” about his new contract.

After the Los Angeles Lakers absolutely crushed the offseason by building out a better bench and improving their frontcourt playmaking, they put the biggest possible cherry on top of their excellent free-agent period, agreeing to a 5-year deal with Anthony Davis and getting an additional commitment from LeBron James beyond the four-year contract which he signed in 2018.

James agreed to a two-year extension that will keep him in a Laker uniform through 2023 and that also coincides with the time that his eldest son, Bronny James, will graduate from high school. It’s also very possible that the NBA changes some of their current rules that prohibit players from jumping to the NBA straight from high school. James discussed how happy he is to potentially have those major moments lineup, according to ESPN.com’s Dave McMenamin.

“The best thing about it is the year I’ll be a free agent will be the same year my oldest son graduates high school,” James said Monday on a videoconference with reporters, making his first comments since the start of training camp. “So I’ll have some options to see, for me personally, what I want to do forward, being around my family, being around my son more or continue to play this game I love with great health and great spirits. We’ll see.”

LeBron has spoken multiple times in the past about how much he would like to be part of the first Father-Son duo in NBA history. Bronny is currently a top-25 recruit in his class, according to ESPN.

LeBron James’ contract extension gets him a step closer to teaming up with Bronny

It could happen.

Coming off his fourth NBA championship and Finals MVP, it’s almost difficult to imagine that LeBron James’ career could be winding down. But in the meantime, LeBron does have a goal in mind:

Play in the NBA with his oldest son, Bronny James.

He’s now one step closer to that goal.

According to The Athletic, LeBron agreed to a two-year, $85 million contract extension with the Lakers, which runs through the 2023 season. Bronny — a sophomore in high school — is set to graduate in 2023. And if the NBA and NBPA agree to do away with the age requirement, Bronny could be eligible to enter the NBA draft straight out of high school.

Two years ago, LeBron said in a feature with UNINTERRUPTED that playing in the NBA with (or against) Bronny would be his proudest achievement:

“You want to ask me what is the greatest achievement of my life? If I’m on the same court as my son in the NBA. That would be number one in my lifetime as an NBA player. I’ve thought about it because my son is about to be 14, and he might be able to get in there a little earlier.”

And to Bronny’s credit, he’s at least on track to make that dream a possibility.

Bronny is a five-star recruit, according to 247Sports’ Composite ratings. Right now, Bronny probably wouldn’t be considered a true one-and-done prospect as other players in his class are more advanced in their development. Fellow 2023 classman Mikey Williams, for example, regularly puts up 50-point efforts while Bronny rarely hits double figures with Sierra Canyon (Calif.).

But Bronny’s age, genes and basketball pedigree give him plenty of room to improve. And who knows: Bronny could grow six inches and be the No. 1 prospect by 2023. It’s too early to make any definite proclamation about his basketball potential besides saying there’s a lot of it.

With Wednesday’s news, LeBron is officially trying to see that NBA potential play out.

Savannah James shares adorable video of LeBron and Zhuri jumping rope

LeBron James is getting ready for the next season but he’s also spending some quality time with the family during the holidays.

The holiday season is very different this year for many and that includes LeBron James and the James family. For the first time in his 17-year NBA career, James was celebrating Thanksgiving while also trying to get ready for the upcoming NBA season, as training camps start around the league this coming week. So even while he’s enjoying the downtime of the holiday, he’s still putting in some kind of physical work and his daughter Zhrui joined in for some jump rope.

LeBron’s wife Savannah shared the video of some quality father-daughter time in front of one of their Christmas trees inside the James family home.

James was even managing to do the jump rope while wearing some house slippers, so while he is getting ready for the season, he’s still enjoying the leisure time while he still can. The NBA announced on Friday that the preseason will start on Dec. 11, including a Lakers-Clippers game.

Social media wowed by how big Bronny looks next to his Dad LeBron

Photos from a pre-Thanksgiving workout with LeBron James and Bronny James had people talking on social media.

Before yesterday’s Thanksgiving holiday, the James family once again had people talking. This time, it was a workout with LeBron James and his son Bronny just before heading into the holiday and some pictures that show a growing Bronny looking a lot bigger these days.

First, it was this photo of Bronny and Big Bron with their trainers that got people talking as Bronny is looking almost as big as his Dad.

The workout photos also had people making some hilarious posts and comparisons. The memes from the father-son workout were plentiful.

Including calls by some for Bronny to simply start being referred to as LeBron James Jr.

Bronny is looking more like his Dad these days and while he still has a long way to go, he’s clearly following the right advice. Of course, Bronny’s Sierra Canyon has been playing in some tournaments as team “CBC,” but high school sports still haven’t gone quite back to normal in California.

Bronny James recently hit the gym with his father, LeBron, in Los Angeles and the Sierra Canyon High School guard has much of social media talking after some photos were posted on Instagram.

Bronny and LeBron were seen on the court doing various drills together with noted trainer Chris Johnson. They were often pictured next to each other, which showed a noticeable growth spurt by Bronny when side-by-side with his father.

The 16-year-old has previously said that he is 6-foot-2 but he has likely grown a few inches from that height based on the recent picture next to LeBron, who is listed at 6-foot-9 by the NBA.

Bronny has mostly stayed back home throughout the coronavirus pandemic but he has certainly been busy in the gym. He and Sierra Canyon were slated to face Emoni Bates, the Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year, last week in Dallas but it was postponed due to COVID-19.

Meanwhile, LeBron and the rest of the NBA will report for training camp in the next two weeks as the start of the 2020-21 season is set to tip-off on Dec. 22. Each team will play 72 games in the restructured season, which will feature a play-in tournament for the seventh and eighth seeds in each conference.
