Broncos release statement after Josh Reynolds was shot in arm, head

“Josh Reynolds was a victim of a shooting on Friday in Denver and received treatment for minor injuries,” the Broncos said in a statement.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds and two other men were shot at after leaving a strip club in Glendale, Colorado last week.

Reynolds was shot in his arm and the back of his head. After news of the shooting broke on Thursday, the Broncos released the following statement:

Josh Reynolds was a victim of a shooting on Friday in Denver and received treatment for minor injuries. Out of respect for the legal process, we will defer further comment on this matter to the authorities.

The team describing the receiver’s injuries as “minor” is a very positive sign.

Denver Police announced this week that Burr Charlesworth and Luis Mendoza were arrested in the shooting case.

Reynolds, 29, signed a two-year, $9 million deal with the Broncos this spring. The veteran receiver totaled 12 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown in five games this season before being placed on injured reserve with a finger injury. He has been at practice this week working on his conditioning on a side field with injured players.

Broncos WR Josh Reynolds shot twice after leaving club

Denver Police arrested two men after Broncos WR Josh Reynolds was shot in his arm and the back of his head after leaving a club on Oct. 18.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds was shot twice after leaving Shotgun Willie’s strip club in Glendale, Colorado on Oct. 18, according to a report from Janet Oravetz of 9News.

Reynolds, 29, is OK. He’s been at practice this week working on a side field with other injured players, rehabbing a finger injury.

Reynolds and two other men were followed by multiple vehicles from the strip club and shot at. Reynolds was shot in his arm and the back of his head. Another man was shot in his back and a third man was wounded by shattered class.

The three men were in a blue Ford Bronco when the shooting happened. When their vehicle would no longer drive, they fled and climbed over a fence and police responded to their 911 calls.

The three victims said they had no incidents at the strip club leading up to the shooting, according to court documents obtained by 9News.

Denver Police announced that Burr Charlesworth and Luis Mendoza were arrested in the case on Wednesday. Video footage showed Mendoza watching Reynolds and the two other men in the club and following them when they left. Three vehicles followed the victims when they left.

Reynolds is already on injured reserve with a finger injury. He was eligible to return from that injury in Week 10, but the wounds from this shooting could delay the receiver’s potential return to the field.

Before going on IR, Reynolds hauled in 12 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown in five games this season. He signed a two-year, $9 million deal with the Broncos this spring.

The team released the following statement on Thursday: “Josh Reynolds was a victim of a shooting on Friday in Denver and received treatment for minor injuries. Out of respect for the legal process, we will defer further comment on this matter to the authorities.”

Broncos release Thursday injury report: Pat Surtain status update

Broncos CB Pat Surtain (concussion) practiced again on Thursday. Panthers QB Andy Dalton (thumb) did not practice.

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain (concussion) practiced again on Thursday and he seems to be on track to play against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, although that has not yet been officially confirmed.

Broncos coach Sean Payton said Surtain’s outlook “looks positive” after the cornerback was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice.

Elsewhere on Denver’s injury report, defensive lineman Malcolm Roach (illness) was back at practice but safety P.J. Locke did not participate Thursday after leaving Wednesday’s practice with a thumb injury.

As for the Carolina Panthers, quarterback Andy Dalton (thumb) was held out of practice again on Thursday. Dalton injured his thumb in a car crash on Tuesday, so the Panthers are set to start Bryce Young against the Broncos in Week 8.

Broncos players eat 700 ‘Uncrustables’ per week, by far most in the NFL

The Broncos eat an estimated 700 ‘Uncrustables’ per week, by far the most in the NFL (the Seahawks are second with 320 per week).

Jayson Jenks of The Athletic published a story about NFL players’ love of Uncrustables this week. That’s right, Uncrustables — the frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwiches without crust.

“Before practice, during training camp and in the halftime locker room, they are a favorite of players across the NFL, a touch of childhood wrapped in plastic,” Jenks wrote.

The article estimates that NFL teams consume at least 80,000 Uncrustables a year. The Denver Broncos lead the way with an estimated 700 Uncrustables eaten per week.

The Broncos have 53 players on their active roster, 17 players on their practice squad and seven players on injury lists. That’s 77 total players, which averages out to 9.09 Uncrustables per player each week, by far the most in the NFL.

Javonte Williams gave Audric Estime a perfect gift after rookie’s second fumble

Broncos veteran Javonte Williams gave rookie Audric Estime a football on Wednesday so “he’ll have a ball for a week whenever he goes.”

In the fourth quarter of last week’s win over the New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos running back Audric Estime lost a fumble. That marked the rookie’s second career fumble on just his ninth career carry.

Estime obviously can’t keep that kind of pace up if he wants to stick around in the NFL. To help the rookie prepare for this week’s game against the Carolina Panthers, veteran Javonte Williams gave Estime a fitting gift this week.

“Javonte has given him a present today where he’ll have a ball for a week whenever he goes,” coach Sean Payton said after Wednesday’s practice. “I think it happens to young backs a lot because at this level, the ability for players and the point of emphasis of taking the ball away, it steps up a lot. Historically speaking, it wasn’t really until the ’90s where Lovie Smith and there were a handful of coaches that began to value the takeaway maybe over not necessarily the proper tackle, but they understood. Then it quickly caught on to our league.

“In other words, the (former NFL CB) Peanut Tillmans, and you just saw what it did to a game. I think it’s coached every… We try to as best we can with these young players give them up-the-river medicine. In other words, before there’s a problem, but now he’s someone where if we’re scouting him, is someone who’s fumbled. Now it’s you kind of have to earn your way out of that, and he will.”

Estime has totaled 56 yards on his nine carries thus far, good for a productive 6.2 yards per carry average. Now the Broncos just need him to hang onto the ball. Williams is hoping giving Estime a ball to carry around all week will help the rookie going into Sunday’s game against the Panthers.

Broncos LB Cody Barton named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Congrats to Broncos linebacker Cody Barton for being named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Saints!

In Week 7, the Denver Broncos defense stuffed the New Orleans Saints to only 10 points on Thursday Night Football, and the player with the biggest impact was linebacker Cody Barton.

Barton finished Thursday’s game with eight tackles (six solo), one sack, one quarterback hit, one pass defended and a 52-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Following that impressive performance, Barton was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Head coach Sean Payton spoke about Barton’s achievement on Wednesday. “I’m proud of (Barton),” said Payton. “Certainly, when you look at the game, he was one of the guys on defense that got a game ball. It was a real good game for him.”

Barton also had the opportunity to address the media about the weekly award. “It was an honor getting that award,” Barton said. “It makes me feel good, but also it makes me happy for my teammates as well. I know there’s a lot of plays that I couldn’t have made — like the touchdown at the end — if my teammates aren’t in the backfield making plays. As shiny as it was individually getting an award, I attribute it to my teammates.”

The Broncos defense limited the Saints to 271 total yards and forced two turnovers. Barton has been filling in for injured Denver linebacker Alex Singleton as the defense’s signal-caller.

“The good thing about this defense and something I love about this defense is everyone eats,” Barton said. “You don’t know who’s day it is going to be. In this defense, everyone makes plays and everyone has the chance to eat. It’s a lot of fun.”

The Broncos will look to have another stellar defensive performance on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

49ers sign center who was recently cut by Broncos

After being cut by the Broncos over the weekend, center Dieter Eiselen joined the 49ers’ practice squad.

Dieter Eiselen has quickly landed on his feet after being let go by the Denver Broncos.

Eiselen (6-4, 315 pounds) was cut from Denver’s practice squad on Saturday. Four days later, he has joined the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

The Broncos signed Eiselen on Oct. 8 after losing starting center Luke Wattenberg to an ankle injury. Before his brief stint in Denver, Eiselen spent three seasons with the Chicago Bears and one year with the Houston Texans. He’ll now get a fresh start with the Niners.

The Broncos, meanwhile, have just one true center —
Alex Forsyth — on the active roster. Superstar guard Quinn Meinerz is also capable of playing at center and Denver has Calvin Throckmorton and Nick Gargiulo available on the practice squad.

Elsewhere on the NFL’s transaction wire on Wednesday, ex-Broncos wide receiver Kaden Davis worked out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ex-Denver defensive back Lamar Jackson worked out for the Seattle Seahawks and ex-Broncos linebacker Justin Hollins worked out for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Broncos release Wednesday injury report: Pat Surtain status update

Broncos CB Pat Surtain (concussion) returned to practice Wednesday. Panthers QB Andy Dalton (thumb) did not practice.

Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain (concussion) returned to practice on Wednesday after sitting out the team’s Thursday Night Football game against the New Orleans Saints last week.

Surtain is still in the concussion protocol, but coach Sean Payton said after Wednesday’s practice that Surtain’s outlook “looks positive.”

Surtain suffered the concussion 10 days ago against the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 13. With Surtain sidelined against the Saints on Oct. 17, Riley Moss (58 snaps), Levi Wallace (70 snaps) and Ja’Quan McMillian (49 snaps) served as the team’s top cornerbacks in Week 7.

Tremon Smith (11 snaps) and Damarri Mathis (two snaps) served as the backup cornerbacks with rookie Kris Abrams-Draine a healthy scratch in New Orleans.

Elsewhere on Denver’s injury report, defensive lineman Malcolm Roach was sidelined with an illness and three other players were limited.

Meanwhile, Carolina Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton did not participate on Wednesday after being involved in a car crash on Tuesday. After practice, Carolina coach Dave Canales revealed that Dalton sprained his thumb, putting Bryce Young back in the lineup for Week 8.

Panthers will make QB change ahead of Broncos game

After Andy Dalton sprained his thumb in a car accident, the Panthers are set to start Bryce Young against the Broncos on Sunday.

The Carolina Panthers are set to make a quarterback change ahead of their Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Panthers coach Dave Canales said Monday that Andy Dalton would remain the team’s starting quarterback this week. One day later, Dalton was involved in a car accident in Charlotte.

Dalton was present at Wednesday’s practice but he did not participate in the session, according to the team’s injury report. After practice, Canales confirmed that Dalton sprained his thumb and Bryce Young is now set to start against the Broncos on Sunday.

Young, 23, was the No. 1 overall pick out of Alabama last year.

Young went 2-16 as a starter in Charlotte before being benched by the Panthers three games into his second season. Dalton, a 36-year-old veteran, went 1-4 over the last five games with seven touchdowns and six interceptions.

Before being benched, Young completed 56.9% of his passes this fall for 299 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions (he did rush for one score). Young was also sacked seven times. He’s now back in the lineup for Sunday’s game at Empower Field at Mile High.
