Why Sean Payton wasn’t happy after Broncos beat Panthers

The Broncos got a good win against the Panthers on Sunday, but coach Sean Payton wasn’t happy. Here’s why.

The Denver Broncos took care of business in a 28-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon. You might not have known who won if you skipped the game and only watched coach Sean Payton’s postgame press conference.

Carolina’s only two scores both came after Denver turnovers. After the game, Payton frequently referenced the team’s miscues.

“[I’m] pleased we got the win, [but] there are a handful of things when you look at the tape, I’m sure we’ll see tomorrow, that we’re going to have to clean up and correct,” Payton said. “And there will be some things that we really like that we did well. We can’t keep turning the ball over. That’s frustrating, and I didn’t like how it finished, but it was good to get a win.”

Unprompted, Payton later referenced the Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Courtland Sutton fumbles again.

“[We had] two wide receiver fumbles,” Payton said. “[It] just is what it is. It bothers you.”

The Panthers dropped to 1-7 following Sunday’s game and Payton knows the Broncos won’t win games with two turnovers against better opponents.

“I said to them, ‘We’re going to play in bigger games than this. But in bigger games than this, some of those [mistakes] are going to cost us,'” Payton said. “So we have to take care of that.”

Payton wasn’t even happy with the defense, which played well before giving up a 98-yard drive that ended with a touchdown late in the fourth.

“I wish we would’ve finished better,” Payton said. “I said this, it’s not a good offense we played. It’s just the truth. So we expected that, and we’re going to see a lot better teams.”

Up next for Denver is a road game against the Baltimore Ravens (5-3), followed by another road game against the Kansas City Chiefs (7-0).

“We have a big game this week against a much better team,” Payton said.

Broncos troll Steph Curry, Panthers with funny Scott Van Pelt video

After beating the Panthers on Sunday, the Broncos shared a funny Steph Curry video on social media.

After defeating the Carolina Panthers 28-14 on Sunday, the Denver Broncos trolled their opponent and NBA star Steph Curry with a funny video.

Curry, a big Panthers fan, appeared on a Monday Night Football halftime interview with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt last week. At the end of the interview, Curry signed off with “Go Panthers.” SVP responded with “Good luck with that” and a laugh, which also drew a laugh from Curry.

The Broncos’ official Twitter/X page turned that video clip into a meme following their win over the Panthers in Week 8:

Denver’s social media team also made light of the crazy raccoon incident at Empower Field at Mile High earlier this month. The Broncos re-shared a viral photo of a fan handling a raccoon in the stands with the Panthers’ logo placed over the ‘coon:

This one felt a little bit more like a stretch, but with no raccoon-themed teams on their schedule, the Broncos had to make use of this photo at some point.

Well done, social media team. Well done.

Jaycee Horn got into it with Sean Payton after Broncos beat Panthers

Panthers CB Jaycee Horn yelled at Broncos coach Sean Payton for trying to run up the score on Sunday.

Following the Denver Broncos’ 28-14 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, CBS cameras captured Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn in a heated exchange with Broncos coach Sean Payton.

Payton spent 16 years in the NFC South with the New Orleans Saints, so Carolina is a familiar opponent for him. It seemed that Payton wanted to stick it to his old rival as the Broncos attempted a fake field goal in the fourth quarter and later ran a trick play while leading 28-7.

While leading by three touchdowns with 4:29 left in the game, Payton called a trick play that featured wide receiver Courtland Sutton throwing a deep pass to fullback Michael Burton. Sutton completed the pass but Denver later turned the ball over (on a Sutton fumble).

It seems that Horn was not happy with the situation:

9News cameras captured audio of Horn yelling at Payton for attempting to run up the score.

Payton was asked about the incident after the game.

“I coached his father and so I was yelling back at him,” Payton said. “I think uh — I don’t know what the exchange was, but his father I enjoyed coaching and I enjoyed him. He was frustrated, I think he was yelling at one of our other players. So … [shrugs]. I like him, I think he’s a good player.”

Jaycee’s father, Joe Horn, was a wide receiver for the Saints from 2000-2006. Payton coached the elder Horn in the coach’s first season in New Orleans.

Bo Nix breaks franchise record as Broncos cruise to 28-14 win over Panthers

The Broncos improved to 5-3 following Sunday’s win over the Panthers and Bo Nix now has the most wins by a rookie QB in franchise history.

The Denver Broncos improved to 5-3 on Sunday with a convincing 28-14 win over the Carolina Panthers, who dropped to 1-7.

With the win, Bo Nix now holds the franchise record for the most wins by a rookie quarterback (five), passing John Elway (four) and Drew Lock (four). Nix previously broke the franchise record for the most completions by a rookie just six games into his career.

Nix had a historic day, but the game got off to a shaky start for the Broncos.

Denver’s offense got the ball first but Carolina took over near midfield after Broncos wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey lost a fumble on the third snap of the game. The Panthers took advantage of that turnover as Bryce Young led a 10-play, 49-yard drive that ended with a six-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Legette to take an early 7-0 lead.

On their next drive, the Broncos drove down to Carolina’s 28-yard line before Nix took a 13-yard sack that knocked Denver out of field goal range on third down. Riley Dixon and Co. then pinned the Panthers at their own one-yard line. Carolina promptly went three-and-out and the Broncos got the ball back at its 45-yard line.

Nix then led a seven-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass to tight end/fullback Nate Adkins to tie the game at 7-7.

One series later, Nix and the offense went 92 yards on seven plays on a drive that was capped off by Nix’s 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Adam Trautman to make it 14-7.

Following that score, Denver took over near midfield after Pat Surtain tackled Panthers running back Miles Sanders short of the line to gain on fourth down. The Broncos then went 48 yards and Nix scored on a one-yard QB sneak to extend the lead to 21-7 ahead of halftime.

In the second half, the Panthers turned it over on downs at their own 24-yard line after a fake punt fell incomplete when punter Johnny Hekker was unable to connect with gunner Sam Franklin. Denver took advantage of that field position four plays later when Nix threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to running back Jaleel McLaughlin to make it 28-7.

Later in the third quarter, Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain intercepted a Young pass, but Denver wasn’t able to capitalize off that turnover.

In the fourth quarter, Broncos kicker Wil Lutz lined up for a 60-yard field goal attempt, but the team ran a fake to tight end Lucas Krull. The fake failed as Krull was tackled five yards short of the line to gain.

Later in the fourth quarter, Denver cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian picked off a Young pass in the end zone, essentially sealing the game.

The Broncos attempted to pour it on late in the game with a trick play that featured wide receiver Courtland Sutton throwing a deep pass to fullback Michael Burton. Sutton completed the pass but Denver turned it over three plays later when Sutton lost a fumble on his eighth catch of the game.

The Panthers scored a garbage time touchdown late in the fourth when Young threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jalen Coker. That made it 28-14, which ended up being the final score after Carolina failed to recover an onside kick.

Nix finished the game 28-of-37 passing for 284 yards with three touchdowns and no turnovers, good for a 124.2 passer rating. Nix also rushed four times for five yards and a score.

On the injury front, Krull left in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury, but he later returned to the game. Surtain also suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter.

Up next for the Broncos is back-to-back road games against the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas city Chiefs (view the full schedule here).

Broncos injury report: Starting defensive back doubtful for Panthers game

Broncos DB P.J. Locke (thumb) is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Panthers.

After practicing in all three sessions this week, Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain (concussion) appears to be on track to play against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, but another starting defensive back is listed as doubtful to play in Week 8.

Broncos safety P.J. Locke left Wednesday’s practice with a thumb injury and he did not participate in the Thursday or Friday sessions. He is officially considered doubtful for Sunday’s game.

Devon Key would be the next man up at safety across from Brandon Jones. Denver also has JL Skinner and Keidron Smith on the active roster, plus Tanner McCalister on the practice squad.

As for the Carolina Panthers, quarterback Andy Dalton (thumb) is also listed as doubtful. After Dalton injured his thumb in a car crash on Tuesday, the Panthers will start Bryce Young against the Broncos on Sunday.

Elsewhere on Carolina’s injury report, wide receivers Diontae Johnson (ribs) and Adam Thielen (hamstring) have also been ruled out.

Sean Payton says Josh Reynolds was ‘pretty shaken up’ after shooting

“Josh Reynolds last week was involved in a very serious incident … He was pretty shaken up,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds was shot in the arm in the back of the head after leaving a strip club in the Denver area last week. The receiver’s wounds were only minor, but the incident could have been deadly.

“Let me start with something that’s serious,” Payton said to begin his post-practice press conference on Friday. “I just finished visiting with the team about [it]: Josh Reynolds last week was involved in a very serious incident, shooting. I’m kind of like you where I’ve got the initial details, and he’s fortunate.

“Currently, the league and then obviously the local authorities are handling that. I’ve had a chance to talk with him. He was pretty shaken up and I’ll leave it at that.”

Payton later said the team has counseling and many resources to help support Reynolds after the shooting.

Two men have been arrested in connection to the shooting.

Reynolds was back in practice this week, working on a side field with other injured players (he’s currently on injured reserve with a finger injury).

Reynolds totaled 12 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown in five games before being placed on IR two weeks ago.

Sean Payton comments on trade statuses of Broncos QBs Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham

“Right now, I like where we’re at with this group,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said when asked about the NFL’s trade deadline.

After Friday’s practice session, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton was asked about the possibility of moving one of the team’s backup quarterbacks — either Jarrett Stidham or Zach Wilson — ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline.

Payton’s answer seemed to imply that one team had already reached out, but the talks were very preliminary.

“George [Paton] would be the better one to ask, but we’ll get teasers,” Payton said. “You know, a team a couple weeks ago [says], ‘Hey.’ Not even (waves hand) — and then, you know. When there’s a call that is somewhat substantial, it’s still like the beginning process. ‘Hey, this is what we might [offer],’ and then — we’re two weeks away.

“George and I will talk about it each day, but we’re focused on this [game] right now. I understand [the questions about it], and yet, it’s pretty normal. There’s a group of teams shopping a certain list of players. Some teams are easier to do a deal with maybe than others, but right now, I like where we’re at with this group.”

The NFL’s trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 5. If Denver does make any trades, we will track all the moves on Broncos Wire.

Denver Police arrest two men connected to Josh Reynolds shooting

Denver Police arrested two men who are under investigation for attempted first-degree murder following the Josh Reynolds shooting.

Denver Police have arrested two men in connection to the Josh Reynolds shooting last week.

Police arrested Burr Charlesworth, 42, on Oct. 19 and Luis Mendoza, 35, on Oct. 22, less than a week after the Oct. 18 shooting. The two suspects “are being held for investigation of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault,” according to KDVR’s Heather Willard.

Further suspects may be identified later.

Reynolds and two other men were followed after they left a club early in the morning of Oct. 18. Two of them suffered non-life-threatening injuries when shot. Reynolds was shot in his arm and the back of his head, but the Denver Broncos said in a statement that his injuries were “minor.”

Reynolds, 29, was already back at practice this week working on a side field with other injured players. Reynolds is currently on injured reserve while recovering from a finger injury.

“Josh Reynolds was a victim of a shooting on Friday in Denver and received treatment for minor injuries,” the team said in a statement. “Out of respect for the legal process, we will defer further comment on this matter to the authorities.”

Reynolds hauled in 12 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown in five games this season before being placed on IR.
