49ers vs Packers injury report: Latest updates, news for Week 12

All the latest updates and news on the 49ers’ injury report ahead of a Week 12 game vs. the Packers.

The San Francisco 49ers will go into Week 12 without quarterback Brock Purdy and defensive end Nick Bosa.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday told reporters both players have been ruled out against the Green Bay Packers. Purdy is nursing a shoulder injury he sustained in Week 11. Bosa has hip and oblique injuries that derived from a hip injury he sustained leading up to Week 10.

With Purdy out, quarterback Brandon Allen will get the start with Josh Dobbs holding down the backup role. It will be Dobbs’s first time active for the 49ers.

Not listed are tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey. Both were limited during the week. Kittle had a hamstring issue. McCaffrey is still managing his Achilles tendinitis.

Updates on 49ers injured stars not good as final Week 12 practice begins

The 49ers starting quarterback was not seen at the start of the final practice before Week 12 against the Packers.

Before traveling to Green Bay for their Week 12 game against the Packers, the San Francisco 49ers suited up for their final practice of the week on Friday afternoon.

To start practice, the 49ers were without a flurry of star players, including their starting signal caller. As practice began, quarterback Brock Purdy was not on the field. Purdy picked up a shoulder injury during the 49ers’ Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Via @eric_branch on Twitter:

Without Purdy, backup veteran passer Brandon Allen was under center for the 49ers at practice. Allen was in a competition over the offseason with fellow quarterback Joshua Dobbs. Allen last made a start in 2021 for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Adding to their already stacked injury report is Pro Bowl pass rusher Nick Bosa (hip, oblique) and All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) were also missing from the start of practice on Friday.

Following practice on Friday, the 49ers will make their trip to Green Bay for a potentially snowy Week 12 contest against the 7-3 Packers.

49ers don’t know if QB Brock Purdy (shoulder) will start vs. Packers

49ers GM John Lynch said the team doesn’t know if Brock Purdy will be able to play through a shoulder injury on Sunday against the Packers.

The San Francisco 49ers aren’t sure if quarterback Brock Purdy will be able to play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

Purdy is dealing with an injured right shoulder, and Lynch called the situation “tenuous” in terms of his availability for Sunday.

“We’ve had a plan to try and quiet it down,” Lynch told KNBR on Friday. “Wednesday didn’t do any throwing, just where out there and did practice. Thursday started to do some throwing and then went inside to do some rehab per the plan. We’ll see where he’s at today, hopefully he makes progress and we can have a shot at this weekend, but we’ll see. It is tenuous.”

The 49ers will provide a final injury report after practice and before flying to Green Bay on Friday.

Lynch said Purdy injured his shoulder at some point during last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He also said the 49ers did an MRI on Purdy’s shoulder to assess the damage.

Lynch said Brandon Allen would start at quarterback if Purdy can’t go on Sunday. Veteran Josh Dobbs would also be available to play at quarterback.

Purdy has started 31 consecutive games for the 49ers at quarterback, save for a healthy scratch in Week 17 with the 49ers playoff situation clinched last season.

The 49ers also aren’t sure if edge rusher Nick Bosa or left tackle Trent Williams will be able to go Sunday. Neither has practiced this week. Lynch said both will get the full week to get physically ready to play against the Packers.

“Obviously, those guys are big-time players, we’d love to have them, but if we don’t, we have to find a way to come up with a much-needed win,” Lynch said.

No news is bad news in 49ers Week 12 injury update

The 49ers practice report didn’t get much better Thursday.

The San Francisco 49ers continued their practice week without any major updates on the injury front.

Perhaps the best news is that running back Christian McCaffrey returned to action after getting a rest day Wednesday. He got limited sessions in to start the first two weeks after his return, so there was a small red flag that went up when he was listed as a non-participant for rest in Week 12. His return to a limited practice Thursday is a good sign that things will be business as usual Friday and he won’t be on the injury report.

The other change was a concerning one for rookie wide receiver Jacob Cowing. He was a limited participant Wednesday while working through concussion protocol. Then Thursday he was a non-participant, indicating he may have had a setback that puts his status in jeopardy for Sunday.

Here’s what the Thursday practice report looked like:

Did not participate

WR Jacob Cowing (concussion)
LB Tatum Bethune (knee)

DE Nick Bosa (hip, oblique)
DT Kevin Givens (groin)
LT Trent Williams (ankle)

No Bosa and no Williams is a pretty significant concern. Both players played through injuries in Week 11, which gives some hope they may be able to do the same in Week 12. However, Bosa is dealing with hip and oblique issues now after just being listed with a hip injury last week. He also pulled himself out of the 49ers’ most recent loss. Williams didn’t practice leading up to Week 11 which gives some optimism he may be able to do the same this week, but even a limited participation Friday would be a good sign.

Limited participation

RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, rest)
C Jon Feliciano (knee)
TE George Kittle (hamstring)
QB Brock Purdy (right shoulder)
CB Charvarius Ward (not injury related – personal matter)

Another limited workout for Purdy is certainly concerning. Kittle remains optimistic about his return for Week 12, and head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated Ward’s return to practice doesn’t guarantee he’ll be able to suit up Sunday after his absence.

Insider offers wild option at QB for 49ers if they don’t extend Brock Purdy

Oh dear…

It would appear the San Francisco 49ers’ future at quarterback is set with Brock Purdy.

The Athletic’s 49ers beat reporter Matt Barrows isn’t so sure.

Barrows in an appearance on 95.7 the Game in San Francisco told hosts Steiny and Guru that quarterback Aaron Rodgers could be a route the 49ers go instead of extending Purdy in the offseason since their other options are relatively thin.

“I don’t really know what the recourse would be,” Barrows said. “Do you play hardball with Brock Purdy? Who else is going to be your quarterback? Do you want Brandon Allen to be your quarterback? Do you go out and sign Sam Darnold who will be a free agent?

The one sort of intriguing possibility is in New York if things just fall apart with the Jets and all the sudden Aaron Rodgers — a guy that the 49ers were definitely interested in in the past — becomes available.”

It’s hard to imagine San Francisco would still be as interested in Rodgers as they were three or four years ago when his exit from Green Bay looked imminent. His tenure in New York has featured a catastrophic Achilles injury and a worse start than they had under Zach Wilson. Not to mention Rodgers isn’t playing particularly well and he turns 41 on Dec. 2.

Even if they’re still not sold on Purdy, they could conceivably have him play out the final year of his rookie contract before committing to a deal at or near the top of the market. The final pick in the 2022 draft is under contract through the 2025 season.

Rodgers is also under contract through 2025, but New York may be eager to move on from him given how calamitous his tenure there has been.

It sounds, per Barrows, like having Purdy play out his rookie deal would be a route the team went before making a seismic shift to an aging Hall of Famer like Rodgers.

”I just think that — two things — one is that the 49ers are not as down on Brock Purdy as the public is,” Barrows said. “I think they realize Purdy is dealing with a lot of challenges this year. And we can go over them, it’s a laundry list of things that are different from last year and that they’re very happy to have him for the future.

And B, and probably most important … the market is the market. They’re not going to — just like Brandon Aiyuk and wide receivers — they’re not gonna be able to get a discount if Brock Purdy’s numbers dip a little bit this year. That doesn’t come with a discount. They’re gonna have to pay what the going rate for a starting quarterback is, and it’s been well established — some guys we don’t think of as top-tier quarterbacks have gotten paid like top-tier quarterbacks recently.”

If Rodgers does come available, we can probably expect his name to be tied to the 49ers. He and the club are inextricably linked since they passed on him in the 2005 draft, but it sounds more like San Francisco would sooner roll with Purdy than take on Rodgers at this point.

49ers 1st Week 12 practice report littered with injured stars

The 49ers practice report to open Week 12 is rough:

The San Francisco 49ers can’t seem to escape the injury bug in the 2024 season.

Their first practice participation report of Week 12 featured nine players either out or limited due to injury. Of those nine, five are starters who were either All-Pros or Pro Bowlers just last season.

Most teams by this point of the season have multiple players banged up and dealing with injuries, but for the 49ers it seems as though all of their most important players have dealt with injuries of varying degrees of severity at some point during the year.

With another huge game coming up and their playoff hopes potentially on the line, the 49ers need to hope their injury luck turns around quickly in the lead up to Sunday’s showdown with the Green Bay Packers.

Here’s Wednesday’s participation report:

Did not participate

LB Tatum Bethune (knee)
DE Nick Bosa (hip, oblique)
DT Kevin Givens (groin)
RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, rest)
LT Trent Williams (ankle)

Bethune sprained his MCL in Week 11 and figures to miss multiple weeks. Bosa played through his hip injury two weeks ago and now appears to have caused additional damage that puts his chances to play against the Packers in jeopardy. Givens was seen getting work in on a side field late last week, which gives some optimism of an eventual return. A non-participation for him isn’t a great sign for his chances to play this week. McCaffrey will likely be out or limited of every practice as part of the team’s management of his Achilles injury, while Williams is nursing an ankle issue he played through last week.

Limited participation

WR Jacob Cowing (concussion)
C Jon Feliciano (knee)
TE George Kittle (hamstring)
QB Brock Purdy (right shoulder)
CB Charvarius Ward (not injury related – personal matter)

Cowing sustained a concussion on a punt return last week. He’ll need to clear concussion protocol to suit up in Green Bay. Feliciano may be an answer for the 49ers on the offensive line, but he’s yet to be activated off IR. Kittle told reporters he’s confident he’ll play in Week 12, but they may still limit him during the week as a precaution. Purdy sustained a shoulder injury in Week 11 that will require some management during the week by San Francisco. That he was limited is a good sign. Ward was also back on the practice field after time away from the team to work through a personal tragedy.

Packers must guard against Brock Purdy’s scrambling ability

The Packers struggled to contain Caleb Williams last week, and 49ers QB Brock Purdy has become a legit scrambling threat.

The Green Bay Packers were caught off guard against the movement ability of Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, but guarding against the scrambling potential of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy must be a top priority for Sunday’s showdown at Lambeau Field.

Williams rushed nine times for 70 yards against the Packers last week, including scrambles of 16 yards and 13 yards to convert third downs and an option keeper to convert a fourth down.

The Packers must be better defending against quarterback runs this week.

Incredibly, Purdy ranks second among all quarterbacks in scramble attempts this season. His 37 scrambles trail only the 46 attempted by rookie Jayden Daniels through 11 weeks.

Purdy has rushed for 267 yards, four touchdowns and 26 first downs or touchdowns this season, all career highs. His 26 first downs or touchdowns ranks sixth among quarterbacks, and his rushing success rate of 66.7 ranks first at the position.

Purdy isn’t the biggest or fastest quarterback in the game, but he’s quick and creative as a runner, and it’s clear his sense for feeling rush lanes and escaping the pocket is improved in 2024. He’s also more willing to run, although it’s possible he’s turning down completions elsewhere to improvise with his legs.

Last week, Purdy broke contain of the pocket to his right and scored a 10-yard rushing touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks.

Purdy was responsible for two of the three 49ers run gaining 10 or more yards against the Seahawks.

The Packers will need to have disciplined rush lanes and have awareness on the second level when Purdy is about to tuck the ball and run. Against the Bears, rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper was just a little late on both third-down scrambles and allowed Williams to get to the edge and convert. Purdy and Williams are probably comparable in terms of quickness and speed as scramblers, so Cooper and the other Packers linebackers won’t have time to hesitate on extended plays.

You can bet the Packers will spend extra time reviewing the mistakes made against Williams and attempt to correct this week. Can the Packers keep Purdy in the pocket and contain his scrambling ability on Sunday at Lambeau Field?

49ers injury updates aren’t great news for QB and ailing superstar DE

The San Francisco 49ers have injury issues at two of the most important positions on their roster entering Week 12.

The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with a handful of injuries following a disastrous Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

A pair of those injuries are to key starters for the 49ers as their margin for error in the race for the postseason shrank to almost nothing.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday told reporters in a conference call that defensive end Nick Bosa is dealing with hip and oblique injuries. The team will evaluate Bosa throughout the week, and Shanahan said it’s possible Bosa could suit up for Sunday’s game against the Packers in Green Bay.

Quarterback Brock Purdy also showed up in Shanahan’s Monday update after not being there immediately after Sunday’s game. Shanahan said Purdy is day-to-day with right shoulder soreness. This is the second time Purdy has been banged up during a game this season and was considered day-to-day during the week. He also hurt his back against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3, but was a full participant in practice for all of Week 4.

Both Purdy and Bosa’s statuses on the practice reports starting Wednesday will be worth monitoring closely.

Shanahan also said rookie wide receiver and punt returner Jacob Cowing is in the concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head on a punt return. If he can’t clear the protocol, the team may turn to second-year WR Ronnie Bell or rookie WR Ricky Pearsall to take those punt return snaps.

Rookie linebacker Tatum Bethune was also hurt early in the game on kick coverage. He’s working through a sprained MCL that will keep him out awhile per Shanahan.

Brock Purdy shows off speed on way to TD run vs. Seahawks

To get the 49ers on the board against the Seahawks, Brock Purdy showed off his speed on the way to a 10-yard touchdown run.

After posting a three-and-out to start the game, the San Francisco 49ers offense came to life on their second possession of the game. With the Seattle Seahawks leading to start the game 3-0, Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy led the 49ers down the field on a 12-play scoring drive.

Following a sack that resulted in a five-yard loss, Purdy used his legs to get the 49ers on the board with a rushing touchdown on the very next play. After scrambling, Purdy broke away with the ball down the sideline for a 10-yard rushing score to give the 49ers the lead 7-3.

Purdy’s touchdown against the Seahawks was his fourth rushing score of the 2024 campaign.

First half recap: 49ers lead the Seahawks 7-6

First half recap: 49ers lead the Seahawks 7-6

The Seattle Seahawks are in a crucial Week 11 rematch against the San Francisco 49ers, and so far, the Niners have a clear edge. In a rapid first half, San Francisco leads Seattle by a score of 7-6.

The Seahawks forced the Niners on a three-and-out to start the game, and eventually took an early lead on their opening drive.

While it did end with a sack on third down, as Nick Bosa beat Abe Lucas in his season debut, Jason Myers did nail a 52-yard attempt to give Seattle a 3-0 lead.

San Francisco responded immediately, as the Niners engineered a 12-play, 71-yard drive which ended with Brock Purdy scrambling ten yards into the end zone. Purdy has been sacked twice today, but remains frustratingly elusive. Still, two more sacks then the Seahawks were able to secure against him in their Week 6 loss.

Seattle had to punt on their next possession, but quickly got the ball back thanks to cornerback Devon Witherspoon and defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins – the first interception of the big man’s career.

Regrettably, the Seahawks were not able to take full advantage of the interception, as they were held to another field goal. But they did get points out of it, as Jason Myers connected from 57-yards out. Myers now has 22 successful field goals from 50+ yards as a Seahawk, which is the most in franchise history.

Following a sack of Purdy to knock the Niners out of field goal range, Seattle did get the ball back.

Once again, the Seahawks couldn’t take advantage of what their defense gave them, and they had to punt the ball away.

First half stats:

  • Total Yards: 49ers – 152, Seahawks – 104
    • Rushing: 49ers – 82, Seahawks – 29
    • Passing: Seahawks – 75, 49ers – 70
  • Total plays: 49ers 31 to Seahawks’ 24
  • First downs: 49ers 12 to Seahawks’ 7
  • Time of Possession – 49ers lead 18:32 to Seattle’s 11:28

Geno Smith has completed 11-of-14 passes for 91 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, and has been sacked twice. Purdy has completed 11-of-15 for 83, no touchdowns, one interception, and has taken two sacks as well.

Seattle will get the ball to start the second half.
