Titans’ practice squad protections for Week 11 vs. Texans

Breon Borders is among the Titans’ practice squad protections for Week 11 after getting waived and brought back last week.

The Tennessee Titans have protected four players on their practice squad ahead of the Week 11 game against the Houston Texans at Nissan Stadium.

The four protected players are defensive backs Breon Borders and Briean Boddy-Calhoun, running back Dontrell Hilliard, and quarterback Kevin Hogan.

Borders was released by the team last week and was brought back on the practice squad a few days later.

Despite several injuries to the secondary, Borders hasn’t played much, seeing zero defensive snaps in three of his last five games. He had his roster spot taken by fellow cornerback, Chris Jones, who jumped Borders in the cornerback pecking order after out-performing him.

Hogan, who is serving as the Titans’ emergency quarterback, was signed by the team last week after the Carolina Panthers poached signal-caller Matt Barkley off Tennessee’s practice squad.

We’ll see if any of these players gets elevated ahead of Sunday’s game, which is scheduled for noon CT.

Titans add Briean Boddy-Calhoun, put Chris Jones on COVID-19 list

Jones is the first Titans player to land on the COVID-19 list this offseason.

The Tennessee Titans announced a pair of roster moves on Wednesday, one of which includes the addition of veteran defensive back, Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

The other involves the placement of fellow defensive back Chris Jones on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Jones, who was signed back in April, is the first Tennessee player to hit the list this offseason.

Boddy-Calhoun was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016 but never played in a game for them.

He has spent five seasons in the league, appearing in games for the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers — and has now hit for the cycle, spending time with each AFC South team.

The 28-year-old has played in 47 games (22 starts) during his career. He got into one game for the Niners last season and has played in a grand total of four over the past three seasons.

Boddy-Calhoun will compete for a depth role at safety. The Titans will hold their first practice of training camp on Wednesday.

Briean Boddy-Calhoun a free agent, should the Browns bring him back?

Briean Boddy-Calhoun is once again a free agent, should the Cleveland Browns give him a shot to compete for a roster spot?

The Cleveland Browns have added a ton of players to their defense this offseason but, as we’ve learned, general manager Andrew Berry isn’t likely to just stand pat.

One former member of the Browns, Briean Boddy-Calhoun, just became a free agent when San Fransisco needed room for the returning from injury Tony Jefferson. In his three seasons with the Browns, Boddy-Calhoun played both safety spots as well as corner. He played in 43 games and started 21.

Boddy-Calhoun is an undersized player standing at 5’9″ but is built thick at almost 200 pounds. His change of direction skills allowed him to succeed in the slot as well as when tasked with free safety roles.

His three career interceptions all game during his rookie year in the league in 2016 after the Browns claimed him when Jacksonville waived him.

Since then, the former Minnesota Golden Gopher has bounced around to a number of teams but has only played in seven games the last two seasons.

This offseason, the Browns have added Troy Hill and Greg Newsome II to their cornerback room along with the returning Greedy Williams. At safety, John Johnson III joined the team along with the returning Grant Delpit.

Bringing Boddy-Calhoun back would not guarantee him a spot on the team but provide competition especially with his versatility in the slot and safety roles. While Hill, Newsome, Williams, and Denzel Ward seem to have the top four corner spots locked up, there could be two places open for competition behind them.

At this point, Briean Boddy-Calhoun may be more of a “blast from the past” kind of signing. He would not be guaranteed a roster spot but, if he could reclaim his previous Browns form, he could make Andrew Berry’s decision at the end of the roster even more difficult.

49ers roster moves: TE George Kittle’s practice window opens

The San Francisco 49ers opened TE George Kittle’s practice window in the first step of getting him off Injured Reserve.

The San Francisco 49ers have opened the injured reserve practice window for star tight end George Kittle. He will now have the next three weeks to practice with the team before head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch must decide whether to reinstate him to the active roster or leave him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Opening his practice window before Week 15 gives the team some additional breathing room if they don’t make the playoffs. Kittle’s practice window will close when the season ends, so the 21 days will only come into play with a miraculous playoff run by San Francisco.

Kittle fractured his foot in the 49ers Week 7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, but the team has remained hopeful that he could eventually make a return to the field. In 6 games this season, Kittle has hauled in 37 receptions for 474 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The 49ers also signed DL Alex Barrett, CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun, DL Daeshon Hall, OL Aaron Neary and OL Isaiah Williams to the practice squad. Undrafted rookie TE Chase Harrell was let go from the practice squad.

A day after the team’s disapointing 23-15 loss to the Washington Football Team, the San Francisco 49ers have waived defensive lineman Alex Barrett and defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

Barrett played four defensive snaps on Sunday and registered one of the team’s few quarterback hits. On the season, he has appeared in five games, primarily on special teams and has recorded three tackles. He has spent the majority of the last year on the 49ers practice squad. Prior to this season, his only regular season experience came in a pair of games with the Detroit Lions in 2017.

Boddy-Calahan made his first appearance for the 49ers on Sunday, playing on 16 special teams snaps. Over his career, he has played in 47 games combined with the 49ers, Browns, Colts, and Texans recording 151 tackles, three sacks, and three interceptions.

Both will likely return to the 49ers practice squad after they clear waivers.

49ers roster moves: OL Tony Bergstrom promoted, practice squad gets shuffled

The San Francisco 49ers promoted offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom from the practice squad and made a couple of other minor moves.

The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday promoted offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom to their active roster from their practice squad. They also signed cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun and tight end Daniel Helm to the practice squad.

While drafted as an offensive tackle, Bergstrom has played primarily guard over the past couple of seasons. Last season he appeared in all 16 games and made six starts for the Washington Football Team. He has appeared in 82 games over parts of seven NFL seasons.

The 49ers worked out Boddy-Calhoun last week. He spent three years with the Browns and parts of last year with the Colts and Texans. In his four NFL seasons he’s played in 46 games with 22 starts primarily at safety. He’s recorded 151 tackles, 19 passes defended, three interceptions, and three sacks.

Helm was released from the 49ers practice squad just last week. He signed as an undrafted free agent out of Duke by the Los Angeles Chargers prior to the 2019 season. The 49ers claimed him off waivers and he spent the majority of last season on their practice squad. This season, Helm has appeared in 3 games with the 49ers special teams unit.

4 pending free agents the Colts should re-sign

These Colts should be re-signed this offseason.

2020 will be one of the biggest off-seasons in recent Indianapolis Colts’ history. After finishing the season losing five of the final six games, the Colts finished 7-9 and have a lot of questions about their roster going into the offseason.

Indianapolis have a few free agents going into the 2020 off-season and with a projected $93 million in cap space, there is no strap for cash to keep the guys they want to.

The Colts have 14 unrestricted free agents. These players will be able to sign with anyone in March when the new league year starts.

With the Colts having a large amount of cap space to sign players, let’s look at some players the Colts should re-sign:

OT Anthony Castonzo

Pending the decision if Castonzo retires, he should be the first Colt to be re-signed this offseason.

Castonzo has been the rock at left tackle for the Colts since being drafted here in 2011, and he plays a valuable position.

At 31 years old, and feeling the best he has in his life, it should be a no-brainer the Colts keep the continuity of the offensive line in check and re-sign Castonzo to a nice, multi-year contract.

Coming off of what is arguably his best season yet, the Colts desperately need his consistent production on the left side next to All-Pro Quenton Nelson.

Colts sign CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun

Colts add to the secondary.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun and placed defensive back Rolan Milligan on the injured reserve list, the team announced Wednesday.

Boddy-Calhoun got his start in the NFL as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016. He has also spent time with the Cleveland Browns (2016-18) and Houston Texans (2019).

In 44 career games (21 starts), Boddy-Calhoun has recorded 133 tackles (105 solo), 19 passes defended and three interceptions.

Milligan suffered a foot injury against the New Orleans Saints and was placed on the injured reserve.
