10 offensive coordinator candidates the Eagles could target if Brian Johnson departs

We’re looking at ten offensive coordinator candidates the Philadelphia Eagles could target if Brian Johnson departs or is fired

Nick Sirianni officially has his own coaching tree after the Cardinals hired Jonathan Gannon and the Colts hired Shane Steichen in the 2023 coaching carousel.

Sirianni rightfully gets a lot of credit for the Eagles’ success.

Still, after a late-season meltdown that saw the Eagles go 1-6 in their final seven games, including the playoffs, the head coach and his assistant coaches could be on the hot seat.

Philadelphia’s third-year head coach has far exceeded expectations, but it’s clear that Gannon and Steichen played far more significant roles than we thought.

Report: David Tepper could model new GM, HC hires after Eagles

A new report from PFN’s Adam Caplan suggests Panthers owner David Tepper is “enamored” with how the Eagles operate.

Could Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper be looking to model his newest regime after the defending NFC champions?

A report from Pro Football Network insider Adam Caplan suggests that when the Panthers settle into their new hires at head coach and general manager, they could be looking quite a bit like the Philadelphia Eagles.

Caplan writes: “Panthers chairman David Tepper is said to be ‘very impressed’ and ‘enamored’ with the way the Eagles run their football operations and has an awareness of the way things are done there, a league source said.”

Well, this isn’t exactly the best time to be “enamored” with how the Eagles run their ship, one that just sank following an embarrassing 32-9 wild-card round loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That ship, additionally, sailed into Monday night with quite a few holes, as Philadelphia closed out the regular season losing five of their final six games.

Nonetheless, the potential seeds have been planted by the Panthers.

The team has reportedly completed an interview with Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby. It also is expected to speak with Philadelphia offensive coordinator Brian Johnson about its head coaching vacancy.

America demolishes Eagles after wild-card implosion against Buccaneers

The Philadelphia Eagles embarrassed themselves in a ridiculous wild-card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and America was fed up with it.

The defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles did their level best to make their wild-card playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look like a preseason game. Between the horrible schemes on offense and defense, the poor execution on both sides of the ball, the miserable coverage and tackling on defense, and the complete lack of a blitz plan on offense against a Bucs defense that had blitzed at the third-highest rate in the regular season (40.1% behind only the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants), head coach Nick Sirianni, offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia were both singularly and collectively unprepared for what became a 32-9 rout at the hands of the Bucs.

Now that the 2023 Eagles’ season is over, ending as it did with six losses in the team’s last seven games (including this embarrassment) after a 10-1 start, one has to wonder what team owner Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman will have to say about the coaching issues.

What we already know is that based on social media reactions, America has had ENOUGH of his particular Eagles team.

Titans request to interview Eagles’ OC Brian Johnson for head coaching position

The Tennessee Titans have requested to interview Philadelphia Eagles OC Brian Johnson for their vacant head coaching position

The Eagles have struggled offensively this season after being among the NFL’s best last season, but that hasn’t stopped Brian Johnson‘s rise in the league’s coaching ranks.

Jordan Schultz reports that Philadelphia’s embattled offensive coordinator has been requested to interview for the Tennessee Titans’ vacant head coaching job.

Johnson is in his third season with the Eagles and was promoted to offensive coordinator following the 2022 campaign when Philadelphia finished 14-3 en route to a Super Bowl LVII appearance.

Before being named offensive coordinator, Johnson was the Eagles quarterbacks coach from 2021-22, playing a crucial role in the development of Jalen Hurts, who posted the second-highest winning percentage (.733, 22-8) among NFL quarterbacks in that span, trailing only Patrick Mahomes (.765, 26-8).

Panthers reportedly expected to interview Eagles OC Brian Johnson

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Panthers are expected to interview Eagles OC Brian Johnson for their HC position.

The Carolina Panthers may have identified Candidate No. 10.

According to ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the team is expected to interview Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson for their head-coaching position. The 36-year-old would be the 10th known contender in the search.

Johnson is currently in his first season as Philadelphia’s play-caller. He joined the reigning NFC champions as their quarterbacks coach in 2021.

Prior to hitting the NFL sidelines, the Barrett Station, Texas native spent 11 years in the college ranks as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He picked up stops at the University of Utah, Mississippi State University, the University of Houston and the University of Florida.

Under Johnson, the Eagles have averaged the eighth-most yards per game (354.4) in 2023. His work with quarterback Jalen Hurts is also of note—as Hurts has completed nearly 66 percent of his passes for 7,559 yards, 45 touchdowns and 21 interceptions over the past two seasons.

Giants safety Xavier McKinney picks off Jalen Hurts, Marcus Mariota in 29 seconds

The Eagles are circling the drain, and nothing summarizes it like Xavier McKinney picking off Jalen Hurts and Marcus Mariota in 29 seconds.

It does not appear that the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in winning the NFC East. It would have taken an Eagles win over the New York Giants and a Dallas Cowboys loss to the Washington Commanders (with other tie-breaking scenarios involved) for that to happen, but the brunt of it was that the Eagles needed to beat the Giants.

It’s 24-0 at the half… in the Giants’ favor, and the Eagles look ridiculous on both sides of the ball. They have 102 net yards to Big Blue’s 272, and this is against a Giants team that has been a non-starter on offense through most of the season. That’s how things are going on defense.

On offense, Jalen Hurts completed seven of 18 passes for 55 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 26.8 before giving way to backup Marcus Mariota, who threw one pass and had it intercepted.

Both picks were courtesy of Giants safety Xavier McKinney. The Hurts interception was an amazing effort on McKinney’s part, as he went all vertical on this deep sideline pass to Julio Jones.

That happened with 1:34 left in the first half. Then, with 1:05 left in the first half, McKinney got Mariota for the 29-second twofer.

Even if the Eagles lose, they’ll still be 11-6, so it’s tough to say that they’re an “unserious” team… but things are certainly trending that way.

Behind Enemy Lines: Week 16 Q&A with Eagles Wire

With a Week 16 game between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles on tap, we go behind enemy lines for a chat with Eagles Wire.

The New York Giants (5-9) and Philadelphia Eagles (10-4) will square off on Monday afternoon in a Week 16 matchup at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Giants opened the week as 10.5-point road underdogs and that spread has worsened slightly with New York listed at +13.5 as of this writing.

With this matchup on tap, Giants Wire took the opportunity to hold a Q&A with Eagles Wire managing editor Glenn Erby.

Jalen Hurts must fix this one issue to turn the Eagles’ offense around

Jalen Hurts has been bailing too quickly from the pocket too often, and the Eagles’ offense is suffering for it. Can he turn it around against the Cowboys?

In the Philadelphia Eagles’ 42-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was pressured on 27 of his 45 passing attempts. That’s not only the most pressures any NFL quarterback has had on his attempts this season. Only Andy Dalton of the Carolina Panthers in Week 3 (27) and Daniel Jones of the New York Giants in Week 1 (28) have had more pressures in a game this season in their total dropbacks. While we know that the 49ers’ front six is probably the league’s best, and we also know that the Eagles’ offensive line hasn’t quite performed to last season’s standard, this wasn’t primarily about the 49ers winning the battle in the trenches, and the Eagles’ front five unable to hold up.

More than anything, it was about Hurts’ inability to adjust and reset under pressure. Some quarterbacks will drop their eyes to look at the pass rush, and if they can’t quickly get their eyes re-focused on their receivers, the play will fall apart.

The 49ers pressured Hurts with just four rushers on 20 of those plays, and as San Francisco edge-rusher Nick Bosa said after the game, the whole plan was about putting Hurts in positions where he would have to do just that.

“There was definitely an assignment focus — we had to make Jalen focus on the rush, and not look downfield,” Bosa said. “That was the key to the game. Our whole mentality was that we’re not trying to set the record on sacks — we’re trying to close the pocket, and we’re trying to keep his eyes on us. It’s obviously a really good offensive line, and he helps them out with how he evades. You can’t really pick a side with those guys, because you know he’s gonna get out of the pocket and win that way. So, I think we did a really good job of closing in on him.”

Bosa also commented on those plays where Hurts is running around and pointing at receivers.

“You get a push, and he sees that, so his eyes immediately go off his receivers. He’s dipping and dodging right in front of you, and you’re just trying to keep him in the pocket. It’s tough to be blocked for 10 seconds on a play, but it was an unselfish mentality from everybody, and it ended perfectly.”

It was different for Bosa and his linemates to train themselves to NOT go after the quarterback as they usually do.

“Yeah — I mean, there are so many different matchups in a week, and some weeks, you’re [trying] to hit your move and get the sack. This week, the entire focus was closing it in, making him do what he does, and it was effective.”

It was highly effective, and in this week’s “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys got deeper into how Hurts is… well, hurting his offense by dropping his eyes and losing his reads.

Brian Johnson talks handling criticism in Year 1 as Eagles OC; NFL coaching rumors

Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson says he’s not paying attention to criticims of his offense and any outside noise

The Eagles trailed 17-7 for two straight games now, and this past Sunday, #FireBrianJohnson was a trending topic on X and other social media sites heading into the half after Philadelphia only managed 99 total yards while going 0-for-4 on third down.

The second half was and is always different, as Jalen Hurts accounted for five total touchdowns, and the Eagles moved to 10-1 on the season.

Johnson, who was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator after Shane Steichen took the head coaching job for the Indianapolis Colts in February, has received his share of criticism for the slow starts and addressed the growing discontent amid a record-breaking season.
