Nick Sirianni says he has a planned response and we’re ranking 10 OC candidates the Eagles could target if Shane Steichen lands an NFL head coaching job in 2023
Nick Sirianni said he has "a lot of good options" if Gannon/Steichen get head coaching jobs — both internally and externally.
Put another way: This won't catch Sirianni off guard. He's been preparing for this. (He had to think hard about the DC possibilities last year.)

Nick Sirianni is weeks away from officially having his own coaching tree and with the expectation that a team will likely hire Shane Steichen (OC) and Jonathan Gannon (DC), we’re taking an early look at potential replacements.
Sirianni rightfully gets a lot of credit for the Eagles’ success.
Philadelphia’s second-year head coach has far exceeded expectations and proven that he was the perfect target for the role. However, it’s important to remember that Shane Steichen has a massive role in the offense.
Sirianni described this last summer how involved Steichen is with everything the Eagles have done offensively. He started calling plays late in the 2021 season, playing a pivotal role in the Birds’ offense taking off. It’s a change that carried over into 2022 with Philly boasting one of the top offenses all season.
Interest in Steichen will go beyond his work in Philadelphia. He served as the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator in 2020, working alongside Justin Herbert in a record-setting rookie season.
Combine his work with Herbert and Jalen Hurts, and that’s a future NFL head coach.
Sirianni knows his assistants are wanted and he has a plan for their departures.
“Of course, I want to keep these guys, they’re great coordinators, but in the event that I lose them, I have an idea of what I want to do at both spots. The answer is sometimes, yes, it’s in the building, and sometimes it’s outside of the building. But I feel like we have a lot of good options, and I feel like we have a lot of good options in the building that we’d be excited about if that were to happen.”
Here are 10 potential targets for Sirianni if Steichen lands a job in the 2023 cycle ranked from best to worst option.
If Steve Wilks wants to stick around to lead the Panthers, he’ll need one heck of a vision on offense. And that vision could include Eagles QB coach Brian Johnson.
Ben Johnson may not be the only important Johnson in the Carolina Panthers’ search for a new head coach.
Almost as soon as Matt Rhule was sent packing back in October, owner David Tepper began researching offensive-minded possibilities for the opening. And now it shows—as seven of the eight known candidates have earned much of their money coaching up that side of the ball.
The one man who isn’t of that ilk is 2022’s interim head coach Steve Wilks.
So, with the team seemingly zeroing in on a certain type, how can Wilks persuade Tepper and company that the offense will work just fine under him? MMQB senior editor Albert Breer has a hunch . . .
“So I think this is Tepper fighting his best-laid plans against a feeling that Wilks is probably the right guy to hire,” Breer writes in his latest mailbag feature. “And so it’d seem that Wilks’s plan to build on what he accomplished over the past three months, and in particular what he’ll do on offense (I’ve mentioned Philly’s Brian Johnson as a potential coordinator candidate) will be key, if Wilks is going to convince Tepper not to go with Johnson, Dorsey or Steichen.”
Johnson is currently the quarterbacks coach for the NFC’s No. 1-seeded Philadelphia Eagles. Along with offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, Wilks’ competition for the job, he’s helped push Jalen Hurts to an MVP-caliber campaign and the birds into the league’s third-best offense.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported earlier this week that Wilks’ had a “strong” plan for his offensive staff to present to Tepper for his interview on Tuesday. And Johnson, who could become an offensive coordinator rather soon, may have been a part of it.

It’s clear the Saints need to go in a new direction on offense. These candidates could be good picks to replace OC Pete Carmichael, via @RossJacksonNOLA and @john_siglerr:
It’s clear that the New Orleans Saints offense needs to change. The team made an assumption that Pete Carmichael could keep it afloat thanks to his 15 years of experience in the system, as the NFL’s longest-tenured offensive coordinator — but that blew up in their face. They averaged just 19.4 points per game this season and a meagre 13.5 points per game through their final six contests. That’s inexcusable with the playmakers assembled in New Orleans.
Carmichael mismanaged personnel throughout the season, failing to creatively use Alvin Kamara on the ground (with too many runs flowing between the tackles in 10 yards-to-go situations) and through the air (with the fewest designed screen passes in the league, and little to no targets out of the slot) and neglecting to keep his most effective short-yardage convertor, Taysom Hill, involved for long stretches of play. Electrifying rookie receiver Rashid Shaheed didn’t become a regular part of the offense until Week 11.
And that doesn’t even get into his concerning trends as a play caller. Few offenses had more rushing attempts on 2nd-and-10 after an incomplete pass than the Saints did under Carmichael (37), with defenses responding accordingly by allowing just 3.4 yards per carry on those downs. Carmichael never seemed to buck that trend, among others. New Orleans needs to evolve.
So making a change at offensive coordinator should be one of the first moves of their offseason. Whether the Saints try to keep things in-house again or fully explore their options outside the building, here are five names on our radar:
Jimmy Haslam wants a vertical passing attack and wants to bring someone in who can make that happen. Here are a few potential names.
Multiple NFL insiders have stated that Kevin Stefanski is safe as the Cleveland Browns will bring him back in 2023. However, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones has stated that owner Jimmy Haslam may push for Stefanski to add an air raid specialist to his staff to meld his elite run game with a more explosive passing attack in 2023.
This could mean some turnover at quarterbacks coach as Drew Petzing has been a desired name, and even at offensive coordinator as Alex Van Pelt’s role has never been clearly defined. Here, we seek out a handful of names that Stefanski and the Browns could target to add.

The Philadelphia Eagles have three assistant coaches make a list of 2023 head coaching candidates to watch
The Eagles are 8-1 on the season and roaring towards back-to-back playoff berths under second-year head coach Nick Sirianni.
Regardless of the outcomes in 2022, the Philadelphia coaching staff will look significantly different in 2023.
When hiring Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia assembled one of the NFL’s youngest coaching staff, and that dynamic group will soon be broken thanks to their versatility and vast talents.
NFL.com recently looked at the top young coaches to watch for the head coaching carousel that has become an annual sensation.
Philadelphia had three assistants make a list, with two others as honorable mentions.
The Bears are signing kicker Michael Badgley, indicating Cairo Santos will likely not be available for Sunday’s game against the Giants.
The Chicago Bears will have a new kicker when they take on the New York Giants on Sunday. Veteran kicker Michael Badgley is reportedly signing with the Bears, according to his agent Brian McLaughlin. He will handle kicking duties for the Bears as Cairo Santos will miss the game due to personal reasons.

Badgley came into the league in 2018 with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent, but wound up playing with the Los Angeles Chargers for the first few seasons of his career. Between 2018 and 2020, Badgley played in 34 games for the Chargers and converted 80 percent of his field goals.
He played in one game for the Tennessee Titans last season before signing back with the Colts to replace an injured Rodrigo Blankenship. He played in 12 games and converted 18-of-21 field goals and made all of his extra points. He now reunites with former Colts defensive coordinator and current Bears head coach Matt Eberflus this weekend.
Badgley, along with veterans Brian Johnson and Josh Lambo, were brought in to workout with the Bears on Friday with Santos’ status up in the air. Santos missed the last two practices with personal reasons and has been away from the facility. He’s officially listed questionable for Sunday, but he did not travel with the team to New York, indicating Badgley will be the only kicker dressed for the game.
The Bears and Giants kickoff this Sunday at noon CT in East Rutherford, NJ.
The Philadelphia Eagles have four assistant coaches make a list of 2023 head coaching candidates to watch
The 3-0 Eagles are the hottest team in the NFL right now, and with success comes poachers from the opposition looking to lure your best coaches away.
When hiring Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia assembled one of the NFL’s youngest coaching staff, and that dynamic group will soon be broken thanks to their versatility and vast talents.
Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr listed the top 65 potential NFL head coaching candidates for 2023. The Eagles had four assistant coaches on the list, with their offensive coordinator landing the top spot.
Eddy Piñeiro and Brian Johnson weren’t the only kickers the Panthers brought in for a look on Monday.
On Saturday, Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said replacing kicker Zane Gonzalez was a “major thing for us.” And judging by the steps they took on Monday, he wasn’t kidding.
In addition to bringing in Brian Johnson and Eddy Piñeiro for a workout earlier today, the Panthers also called in three other legs for a look. That bunch included Chase McLaughlin, Matthew Wright and Taylor Bertolet.
McLaughlin may be the more familiar name to many, as he’s a well-traveled veteran of just three seasons. The 26-year-old has kicked for six different organizations since 2019—including the Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns.
He stuck around for 16 games in Cleveland this past season, converting on 15 of his 21 field goal attempts and 36 of his 37 extra point tries.
Wright has kicked for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jaguars in his two seasons while Bertolet, who hasn’t recorded an official NFL try, spent a number of weeks on the Panthers’ practice squad in 2020.
