Eagles hosting punter Brett Kern on a visit with Arryn Siposs ruled out indefinitely

The Philadelphia Eagles have a need at the punter position and free agent Brett Kern is visiting the team ahead of the Week 15 matchup against the Bears

The Eagles suffered a critical injury at the punter position and the team reportedly already has a potential replacement at the NovaCare Complex on a visit.

After Arryn Siposs was ruled out indefinitely with a lower leg injury, Tom Pelissero is reporting that Brett Kern is visiting the team.

Formerly with the Titans, Kern lost a preseason battle with rookie Ryan Stonehouse, leading to his release.

Kern spent 13 seasons with Tennessee, appearing in 197 games and setting several franchise records in career punts (923), gross punting average (45.9 yards), net punting average (40.8 yards), and punts downed inside the 20 (373).

Report: Eagles to host ex-Titans P Brett Kern for visit

The Eagles will reportedly meet with ex-Titans punter Brett Kern after losing their punter to injury.

A few weeks after annihilating the Tennessee Titans, the Philadelphia Eagles will reportedly be meeting with one of the team’s best players in franchise history, punter Brett Kern.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Eagles are set to meet with Kern after losing their punter, Arryn Siposs, to a lower-leg injury.

Kern spent 13 seasons with the Titans, and in that time became one of the best punters in the NFL. He was voted to three-straight Pro Bowls from 2017-2019, and was a First-Team All-Pro in 2019.

Kern’s numbers started to hit a bit of a decline in 2020 and 2021, but the real reason he was let go was the emergence of punter Ryan Stonehouse, who beat Kern out and has been a rock star at the position this season.

Obviously, after what transpired in Week 13, it would be tough to see Kern go to the Eagles, but then again it would give him a chance to win his first Super Bowl.

5 punters the Eagles could target after Arryn Siposs suffered leg injury against Giants

We’re looking at five punters that the Philadelphia Eagles could have an interest in adding to the roster after Arryn Siposs suffered a lower leg injury against the Giants

The Eagles don’t have many weaknesses, but Punter Arryn Siposs has been a player to watch all season, and things could be heating up.

Siposs suffered a lower leg injury after trying to advance a blocked punt on Sunday and he’ll be out for an indefinite amount of time.

Here are five punters Philadelphia could have in for a tryout ahead of Sunday’s matchup at Chicago.

Titans great Brett Kern is loving this Ryan Stonehouse punt

Titans great Brett Kern was loving Ryan Stonehouse’s punt in the second quarter against the Chiefs.

Tennessee Titans punter Ryan Stonehouse has been a weapon in and of himself during his rookie campaign, something he showed once again during the Week 9 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

After a failed drive in the second quarter, Stonehouse came on to punt from the Titans’ 40-yard line and promptly booted the ball 57 yards, three yards higher than his league-best 54.0 average.

We know Stonehouse has a big leg, but this punt was particularly impressive because Stonehouse dropped it on the one and gave Tennessee’s punt unit time to down it at the one-yard line.

After the play, Titans great Brett Kern, who was beat out by Stonehouse for the starting job in training camp, gave his full approval of the play.

Before final cuts went down, Kern knew what he was up against, and now we’re all seeing it first hand.

“I knew it was different when I first saw [Stonehouse] punt a ball,” Kern said back in August. “I knew that [the competition] was going to be a grind. I told him, I’ve been in the league a long time and I’ve seen about three or four people in my entire life hit a ball like he does.”

Titans’ Ryan Stonehouse talks winning competition, relationship with Brett Kern

Stonehouse and Kern have maintained their relationship even after the rookie beat the veteran out for the starting job.

For the first time since 2009, the Tennessee Titans will have a starting punter not named Brett Kern — and his name is Ryan Stonehouse.

A 2022 undrafted free agent signing of Tennessee, Stonehouse earned the role after a very impressive training camp and preseason that saw him flash his monster leg, along with the touch necessary to pin opponents deep.

The fact that the Titans would part ways with their long-time punter says a lot about how well Stonehouse did. It also didn’t help that Kern had a few down seasons in a row that also included injuries.

“It was exciting,” Stonehouse said of his competition with Kern, according to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online. “I felt like it was a great opportunity that I worked hard for, and I felt like I earned it.”

Despite beating Kern out for the starting job, the two have maintained their relationship and Stonehouse is taking what he learned from the veteran and is trying to incorporate it into his own game.

“I learned a lot [from Kern] honestly,” Stonehouse said. “Most of the stuff I learned from Brett was just how he handled himself. I have a lot of respect for Brett and what he did and just seeing how he handled his practice routine and how he practiced holding and just some of the little details, and just how he carried himself, those are the things I took mental notes of and picked up and hope to have in my game.”

“He wished me luck,” Stonehouse added. “He told me: Congrats. We talked the other day, too. I told him going forward: I hope this is a great relationship that we have. I learned a lot from Brett, and I have the utmost respect for him.”

While Stonehouse enters the 2022 campaign as the starter, the Titans are apparently keeping Kern in their back pocket just in case. Kern’s dad, Cal, said the team wants the 36-year-old to stay ready just in case.

Not exactly a great showing of confidence for Stonehouse, but it’s a smart move for the Titans with the jury still out on how the rookie punter will perform in the brighter lights of the regular season.

Tennessee Titans players, staff react to Brett Kern’s release

On Wednesday, Titans players and staff touched on the release of punter Brett Kern.

The Tennessee Titans made the difficult decision to part ways with longtime punter Brett Kern earlier this week.

According to Spotrac, the Titans are saving $2.2 million against the salary cap while carrying a $550,000 dead-cap hit for releasing Kern.

The 36-year-old had been with the organization since 2009 and gave the team a smooth transition from Craig Hentrich, who retired at the end of that season.

Ryan Stonehouse, signed as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State in April, will take over punting duties, but the Titans are apparently trying to keep Kern in their back pocket just in case things don’t work out with the rookie.

At the time of his release, Kern owned the franchise records for games played (197), punt attempts (923), punt yards (42,333), punt average (45.9), and punts landing inside the 20-yard line (373).

For the first time since January 2020, the media was allowed back into the Titans locker room on Wednesday. Naturally, most wanted to hear from players and staff on Kern’s release.

We heard from veterans in Taylor Lewan and Kevin Byard, Jeffery Simmons, with whom Kern had a hilarious interaction in Week 17 last year, and both head coach Mike Vrabel and general manager Jon Robinson.

Here’s what they said.

It doesn’t look like Buffalo native Brett Kern will punt for the Bills

It doesn’t look like Buffalo native Brett Kern will punt for the #Bills:

Brett Kern quickly became a fan favorite to sign on as the new punter for the Buffalo Bills.

That has already evaporated.

On Wednesday, the punter’s father, Cal Kern, said to the Buffalo News that Kern will not be signing with the Bills.

The 36-year-old was released by the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday. A Grand Island native just down the road from the city of Buffalo, Kern heading to the Bills seemed like a great option. Fans loved the idea.

Buffalo has a vacancy at the position since the release of rookie Matt Araiza on Saturday.

The Bills and the rest of the NFL cut their rosters down to 53 players on Tuesday. Buffalo got there, but has yet to sign a punter–A move that should be en route soon.

It just won’t be Kern.

Kern was the Titans’ longest-tenured player having spent 13 years in Tennessee.

At 36 years old, Tennessee decided to move on to a younger option. Cutting Kern also saved the Titans $2.2 million on their salary cap.

Brett Kern won’t sign with Bills, may not be done with Titans

Titans P Brett Kern may not be finished in Tennessee after all.

One of the hardest moves the Tennessee Titans had to make in their quest to get down to 53 players was the release of long-time punter Brett Kern, who spent 13 years with the team and was arguably its most beloved player.

It was a rough turn of events for Kern, who actually looked pretty good in camp and the preseason. However, he was simply outdone by rookie Ryan Stonehouse, who offers a more long-term solution at the position.

But we might not have seen the last of Kern in Nashville.

According to his dad Cal, who was a guest on WLVL’s morning show in Buffalo, Kern is not going to sign with the Buffalo Bills like we thought.

Not only that but the Titans are apparently hoping Kern will keep himself available just in case things with Stonehouse don’t work out.

While this is not exactly a vote of confidence for the rookie, it is a smart move by the Titans to at least attempt. After all, there’s no telling how Stonehouse will perform in the brighter lights of the regular season.

Kern’s desire to stay in Tennessee would be somewhat surprising, as you’d assume the 36-year-old would like to make at least one more run at a Super Bowl, something he’d have an opportunity to do in Buffalo.

However, it’s also understandable that Kern doesn’t want to pick up and leave Tennessee after calling it home for the last 13 years and starting a family there.

It’s possible the Titans will put him on the practice squad, but in that scenario he could (and likely would) be poached by another team. Adding to that, The Draft Network’s Justin Melo reports there are no plans for Kern to join Tennessee’s practice squad as of right now.

Perhaps Kern will consider just sitting it out and waiting for the Titans to call him. Whatever the case may be, Kern may not be finished in Nashville after all.

Ex-Titans punter Brett Kern drawing interest from Bills

The Bills reportedly wasted no time in reaching out to former Titans punter Brett Kern.

Once the Tennessee Titans announced the release of long-time punter Brett Kern, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would end up with the Buffalo Bills, a team that recently became in need of a punter.

Well, the seemingly inevitable marriage between the two has made its first step, as The Athletic’s Tim Graham is reporting that the Bills have already reached out to Kern’s camp, and did so just hours after his release.

Making the fit even better is the fact that Kern is a native of Grand Island, New York, which is just 15 minutes or so from Buffalo.

Kern spent 13 years with the Titans and became one of the best punters in the NFL in that span, notching one First-Team All-Pro nod and three Pro Bowl appearances. While his leg wasn’t always the biggest, he was second to none when it came to accuracy and pinning opponents deep.

After a few down years, Kern looked good in camp and preseason in 2022 but was outdone by rookie punter Ryan Stonehouse, who offers the Titans a long-term solution at the position.

It’ll be tough to see Kern go to a team that will be among Tennessee’s biggest competition for an AFC crown, but at least he’ll have a good chance to win his first Super Bowl if he ends up with the Bills.

Photos from every year of Brett Kern’s career with Titans

A look back at Brett Kern’s years with the Titans in photos.

It was the end of an era for the Tennessee Titans on Monday afternoon after it was announced the team was parting ways with its long-time punter, Brett Kern.

While it’s certainly sad to see him go, the move wasn’t a total surprise, as rookie punter Ryan Stonehouse really came on strong in camp and the preseason, forcing the Titans’ hand.

Kern will no doubt land on his feet somewhere else, and that place could be with the Buffalo Bills, who have already reached out to the veteran.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane with some photos from every year of Kern’s career going back to his days as the punter for the Denver Broncos.
