Longhorn signee Brenen Thompson shows off blazing speed at Texas state track meet

Speeeeeeed.

There has been many differences in the ways Tom Herman and Steve Sarkisian recruited the wide receiver position.

The disparity is evident in Sarkisian’s first class of recruits and transfers, as he values blazing track speed that translates to the field regardless of how big the pass catcher is. One of the two receivers that the Longhorns are bringing in as member of their 2022 recruiting class, Brenen Thompson, is the fastest player in Texas.

Thompson showed off his speed that will be on campus in fall, as he won the 3A 100m gold and 200m gold.

Thompson’s speed could easily help him see the field in 2022, even with all of the talent in front of him.

His 200m championship marks his second of his high school career as he won last year as well, and the 100m championship avenges his second place finish that he had in last year’s race as well.

WATCH: Texas signee Brenen Thompson dusts the competition on the track

Texas signee Brenen Thompson can absolutely fly.

Landing four-star wide receiver Brenen Thompson was one of the biggest wins for Steve Sarkisian throughout the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Expect Thompson to be a major weapon for the Longhorns from the first day he steps on campus. The speedster from Spearman is a perfect fit for Texas’ offense. He matches the style of players like Xavier Worthy, Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith, who each excelled in Sarkisian’s system in recent years.

247Sports ranks Thompson as the No. 20 wide receiver in the country and a top 150 prospect overall, finishing as one of the higher-rated players in Texas’ class.

Thompson is a two-sport star who excels on both the football field and the track. He left his competition in the dust during his first track meet of the spring season, running a 10.22 in the 100M and 21.6 in the 200M.

Texas’ players with breakout potential for the 2022 season

10 players who have the potential to have big seasons in 2022.

Texas will have many fresh faces in the program next season.

Over 30 recruits and transfers will make up an exciting group of newcomers joining Texas’ roster.

Steve Sarkisian has a good amount of talent to work with between the newcomers on the team and the young players who have been held over from last season.

Despite the 5-7 record, many around the program feel they are knocking on the door for a massive improvement. Texas proved they could compete with any team in the conference last season but struggled to find ways to win in the second half of games.

Finding some breakout players could turn Texas into real competitors in the Big 12 conference. Last season Xavier Worthy and Bijan Robinson established themselves as elite players. Who on the roster could share similar leaps in the 2022 season?

Here are 10 players who could break out into major contributors next year:

A look at Texas’ WR depth chart after the addition of Isaiah Neyor

Texas’ offense will have talented options at wide receiver in 2022.

Brennan Marion was hired from Pitt to help boost wide receiver development and recruiting.

Marion has hit the ground running upon his arrival in Austin with the flip of Wyoming transfer Isaiah Neyor from Tennessee.

Neyor showed his big-play ability with his 878 yards and 12 touchdowns a year ago at Wyoming.

Texas needed a proven commodity to pair opposite Xavier Worthy and they got exactly with the addition of Neyor.

Wide receiver production took a major hit when Jordan Whittington went down with an injury midway through the 2021 season. A trio of Worthy, Neyor and Whittington has the potential to be explosive.

Whoever ends up winning the quarterback battle next season will have a plethora of weapons to throw to.

Here is a look at some of the notable wide receivers on Texas’s roster:

An updated prediction of how Texas’ offense will look in 2022

Quinn Ewers and Jaheel Billingsley are expected to make an early impact on offense.

Texas did not play to expectations in 2021.

Offensively, the Horns looked respectable on the stat sheet but never found a strong level of consistency. Texas was unstoppable at times but also went through stretches where they appeared stuck in the mud.

Steve Sarkisian has done a good job of addressing needs and adding talent to that side of the ball.

Texas utilized the transfer portal to add high-profile transfers Quinn Ewers and Jahleel Billingsley. Two guys from powerhouse programs in Ohio State and Alabama.

The success of Xavier Worthy as a true freshman in 2021 should give Longhorns fans confidence in this year’s group of freshmen. Texas signed a loaded class that ranks as the No. 5 class in the country. The group features an elite haul of offensive linemen and speedy wide receiver Brenen Thompson.

Texas will have the weapons to have one of the most explosive offenses in the court next season.

Here is an early prediction at the Texas starting offense in 2022.

Top targets for new Texas wide receivers coach Brennan Marion

The class of 2023 features some elite talent at wide receiver.

Steve Sarkisian got his top choice for Texas’ new wide receivers coach in Brennan Marion.

Marion is widely regarded as one of the better up-and-coming coaches in college football. He was instrumental in the development of 2021 Biltnikof winner Jordan Addison at Pitt and was being courted for a few Power Five offensive coordinator jobs.

A big reason Sarkisian brought in Marion from Pittsburgh was to improve recruiting efforts at the wide receiver position.

Texas missed out on many top wideout targets like Evan Stewart, Armani Winfield, CJ Williams and a few others. The Horns did land four-star speedster Brenen Thompson but wanted to see more dominos fall their way.

Texas will have many selling points to high school pass catchers. The success of Xavier Worthy, the addition of Brennan Marion and the opportunity for early playing time, just to name a few.

The good news for Marion is the 2023 recruiting class is absolutely stacked with elite wide receiver talent.

Here is a list of some of the top-rated 2023 wide receivers Texas has made priority targets:

Predicting how the Texas offense will look in 2022 after NSD1

Way-too-early prediction on how the Texas offense will look next season.

The early signing period gave Texas fans a reason to be excited again after a 5-7 campaign.

Texas currently has the No. 5 class in the country with multiple highly sought-after prospects signed. Steve Sarkisian and his staff got high school athletes to see the vision of what they could build at Texas and sold them on becoming the change.

In particular, the class Texas signed on offense should bring many early contributors.

Five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers made national headlines after he announced his transfer from Ohio State. Ewers flirted with a couple of other in-state programs before deciding to sign with Texas.

Kyle Flood gave the offensive line a major shot in the arm signing a six-man class with plenty of size and experience. Flipping five-star tackle Kelvin Banks opened the floodgates for others to join him on the offensive line.

A wide receiver who will likely see the field early is four-star Brenen Thompson. The track star is a perfect fit for Sarkisian’s offense at a position Texas has very little depth at.

Former Texas commit Armani Winfield signs with Baylor

Baylor wins the in-state battle for four-star WR Armani Winfield.

Four-star wide receiver Armani Winfield made headlines after decommitting from the Horns in the middle of the season finale against Kansas State.

Schools like Michigan State and Baylor have since made a strong push for the Lewisville wideout over the past few weeks. Texas got back into the hunt after landing Winfield’s buddy and former five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers from the portal.

Despite making up some ground late, Winfield decided to take his talents to Baylor over Texas and Michigan State.

Winfield is ranked as the No. 25 wide receiver in the country and No. 32 overall prospect in the state of Texas for the 2022 cycle, according to 247Sports composite.

The 6-foot-2 wide receiver tallied over 2,700 receiving yards and 27 touchdowns in his high school career.

Texas currently has the No. 5 ranked 2022 recruiting class but only has one wide receiver commit in Brenen Thompson. Steve Sarkisian is looking to add more talent to the wide receiver room behind freshman All-American Xavier Worthy.

Texas WR commit Brenen Thompson will join Quinn Ewers on campus this weekend

A huge recruiting weekend upcoming for Texas.

The weekend before the early signing period is always a vital one.

This year is no different as Texas will host former five-star Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers on Saturday, a player who has taken over national headlines with the news of his transfer over the past week.

Ewers is coming off visits to Texas Tech and TCU, and the Red Raiders now appear to be Texas’ biggest competition. New head coach Joey McGuire has made an appealing pitch to Ewers, plus the acquisition of offensive coordinator Zach Kittley and some potential NIL money has gained the attention of the five-star.

Texas will get the chance to host Ewers this weekend on what will likely be his final visit before making a decision. Wide receiver Brenen Thompson, the highest graded commit in Texas’ 2022 recruiting class, will make his way to Austin to join Ewers.

The four-star wide receiver was one of the first recruits to contact Ewers on Twitter after news broke he was entering the portal.

Having these two offensive playmakers on campus together this weekend will benefit the Horns as Thompson will undoubtedly do his best to persuade Ewers to play alongside him at Texas.
