What we learned from the Jets’ Week 2 win over the Titans

The New York Jets (1-1) continued their 2024 NFL schedule with a 24-17 win over the Tennessee Titans (0-2) in Week 2.

Following the victory, as is always the case, we were taught a few things about this football team. There were things to take away from all three phases of the game that was.

With that, here are seven things we learned from the Jets’ win over the Titans:

Rodgers was 18-for-30 passing for 176 yards with two touchdowns. A performance that reminded one of his MVP years? No, of course not, but the clutch throws Rodgers made late in the win showed he’s still got something in his right arm that the Jets should be happy about.

While the Jets defense got the job done in the win, it was not because of cornerback Sauce Gardner. He was uncharacteristically bad. In his last nine games, he was credited with allowing six catches for 59 yards combined. He allowed five for 97 yards in Tennessee.

That said, there is no reason to believe that Gardner won’t go back to normal starting next week against the New England Patriots.

On the flip side for New York’s defense was Will McDonald IV. McDonald led the way with a legendary performance as he mustered up three sacks, including a clutch one late to help lock in the victory.

CJ Mosley (toe) left the Week 2 contest early. The linebacker was replaced by Jamien Sherwood who played incredibly well. Sherwood led the Jets with 12 tackles, including one for loss. Pro Football Focus graded Sherwood as his team’s best defender on the day with an overall mark of 82.7.

It looks like there is room for both Breece Hall and Braelon Allen in the Jets’ backfield. The pair played well against the Titans in their own right. Hall had a very impressive touchdown catch, giving his team the lead in the fourth quarter. After an early receiving score of his own, Allen took home the game-winning carry from 20 yards out.

Irv Charles notched a blocked punt for the Jets’ special teams unit. The Titans have now allowed back-to-back blocked kicks to start their season. Kudos to Charles, though. A good and momentum-changing play.

Haason Reddick watch gets brighter. Sure, McDonald performed well, but the Jets defense lost another pass rusher against the Titans in Jermaine Johnson. His season is over because of an Achilles injury. Now is the time to get Reddick in the door amid his contract dispute…

Jets’ Breece Hall has to appreciate the contributions of Braelon Allen

Basically, with HB Braelon Allen’s contributions, the New York Jets backfield becomes extraordinarily dynamic.

The utility of New York Jets running back Braelon should not be overshadowed by the excellence of running back Breece Hall. Basically, with Allen’s contributions, the Jets’ backfield becomes extraordinarily dynamic as Hall is able to rest and avoid attrition.

Jets’ fans recoiled at criticism regarding Hall’s week 1 performance and Hall did bounce back by playing essential in the victory over the Tennessee Titans. However, it was the additional help of Allen, who scored total two touchdowns against the Titans that sealed the team victory.

If Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett can continue to balance the usage of Hall & Allen respectfully, quarterback Aaron Rodgers won’t have to throw the ball at large volumes.

By lessening the usage of Rodgers, it assures he stays energized and sharp, able to make pre-snap reads, signal the snap count to the offensive line in pressure situations, and most importantly be accurate on throws.

Instant analysis after Jets’ 24-17 win over Titans in Week 2

Instant analysis after the New York Jets defeated the Tennessee Titans 24-17 in Week 2

The Jets got to 1-1 after a tough win over a gritty Tennessee Titans team in Week 2, giving them some momentum heading into their home opener Thursday against the New England Patriots during Week 3’s “Thursday Night Football” matchup.

Let’s talk some notes from the game.

Offensively, the Jets (1-1) seem to have already figured out how to utilize running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen on offense. Hall (14 carries for 62 yards, seven catches for 52 yards and a touchdown) remains the lead back but the rookie Allen (seven carries for 33 yards, two catches for 23 yards and a touchdown) is already solidly in the mix behind him. The two combined for 95 yards on 21 carries as the Jets were able to find success on the ground.

New York took advantage of Titans’ miscues with turnovers and turning those into points. The Jets turned an interception of Tennessee (0-2) quarterback Will Levis into a touchdown on a 12-play drive (Allen’s 12-yard reception from Aaron Rodgers). They also got a blocked punt from Irv Charles and scored three on the insinuating drive.

New York then kept alive following a roughing the passer penalty on Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. That drive culminated with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers to Hall to give the Jets their first lead of the game at 14-10.

The Jets got it done in all three phases of the game. They were steady on offense, particularly in the second half to take advantage of the game late, had key turnovers on defense and their special teams came up clutch as well with the blocked punt. The Jets were actually out-gained by the Titans 300-265. Both teams were 5-of-12 on third down. Overall, the teams were pretty even in numbers. Just goes to show how turnovers can help determine a game outcome. The Jets had two takeaways, the Titans had zero.

The Jets were helped by some wacky play from Levis, truth be told. No one has any idea what he was thinking on that throw early in the game. The Jets were quite fine with it, however, as they recovered a fumble via linebacker Quincy Williams.

Overall, a solid day for the offense. That side of the ball started moving better as the day wore on and the defense got to Levis four times and picked him off once. The big story, though, is the continued pile of injuries for the Jets. Linebacker C.J. Mosley left with a foot injury. But the big injury was the likely torn Achilles for edge Jermaine Johnson. The breakout star of 2023 is already done for 2024 in heartbreaking fashion. All eyes now turn to Haason Reddick and whether this will make the Jets cave in on a new deal for Reddick to help fill the void.

It’s now a quick turnaround for the Jets. They play again in just a few days in their home opener set for Thursday against the Patriots. New England fell 23-20 in overtime to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.

Braelon Allen should get more carries in week 2: Jets vs. Titans

New York Jets rookie running back Braelon Allen barely got a chance to make a difference in week 1. Can he help his team vs. Titans?

The New York Jets rushing attack was very unimpressive in week 1 and rookie running back Braelon Allen didn’t even get a chance to make a difference. Will the Jets allow Allen to be an asset in week 2?

Allen is currently No. 2 on the team depth chart behind Breece Hall. Hall’s acclaim far exceeds the output he produced versus the San Francisco 49ers and fans our anticipating a bounce back game. However, with the Buffalo Bills off to a 2-0 season start, the New York Jets cannot afford another lack luster offensive performance from Hall.

Furthermore, transferring some of Hall’s touches to Allen makes sense for various reasons:

  • To maintain the attrition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Jets need to focus on establishing the run and sustaining offensive drives.
  • Also, by swapping fresh legs in and out of the lineup, Hall will have an opportunity to rest.

The Jets do in fact need Hall in the screen passing game and on those quick outside zone runs. Therefore, the Jets’ should give Allen some carries to help maintain the attrition of the offense.

3 keys to a Jets victory vs. the Titans in Week 2

3 keys to a #Jets victory vs. the #Titans in Week 2:

The New York Jets will hope to add a win to their record in 2024 in Week 2. The team will visit the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium on Sunday.

As usual, it will never be a walk in the park in the NFL. If the Jets (0-1) expect to beat the Titans (0-1), there will be a few key things New York will have to focus on against Tennessee.

It will have to be a full-team effort, make no mistake. But these factors could weigh heavy on whether or not New York leave Tennessee with a win or loss.

Here are three keys to the Jets pulling out a victory against the Titans:

Actually stop the run

(USAT)

The Jets did not have to face All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1. It didn’t matter as backup Jordan Mason put up more than 140 yards on the ground with a touchdown. New York head coach Robert Saleh vowed the defense will be better, which is a good idea, because it’s a huge key to this game.

Make a bad QB bad

(USAT)

In the Titans’ opener against the Chicago Bears, running back Tony Pollard looked pretty good. Quarterback Will Levis did not. The Jets need to make the same thing happen defensively, which is easier said than done with how poorly New York’s defense got to the quarterback against the Niners.

Establish the run

(Imagn)

Getting running back Breece Hall on a roll, in itself, is good. However, the real key here is balance. If the Jets offensive line can make some room for Hall to work, that will allow quarterback Aaron Rodgers to do the same–again–something that did not happen last weekend.

Jets’ OC Nathaniel Hackett should be criticized for play calling vs. 49ers

New York Jets OC Nathaniel Hackett has unreasonably  avoided a large amounts of criticism after his dismal play calling in week 1.

The New York Jets had collective struggles versus the San Francisco 49ers in week 1. Still, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett deserves criticism for his scheme and personnel packages in the Jets’ loss.

Instead of criticizing Hackett, many have chosen to slander the Jets’ defense which spent 38 total minutes on the field in week 1 and literally gave up only two touchdowns. For context, no NFL team averaged more than 33 minutes of possession the entire 2023-24 season.

Through ten total offensive drives, Hackett produced two offensive turnovers, a turnover on downs, and three punts. More importantly, the Jets’ offense produced a total of three rushing first downs which is inexcusable. Since running back Breece Hall carried 16 of the teams 19 total rushing attempts, it is reasonable to suggests that Hackett should deploy other running backs on the depth chart to assist Hall inside the trenches.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was able to sneak in a passing touchdown to wide receiver Allen Lazard but Rodgers’ witty play should not be an accreditation to Hackett’s brilliance.

The offensive issues are very fixable and Hackett will be in the film room this week to figure it out. However, Hackett cannot approach week 2 with the same rigid attack believing he will get different results.

Report card: Jets fall 32-19 to the 49ers

Report card: #Jets fall 32-19 to the #49ers:

The New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers clashed in a Week 1 contest to begin the 2024 NFL season.

The Jets (0-1) ended up falling 32-19 to the Niners (0-1). It was a game that had a lot of hyped around it and Gang Green mostly fell short.

With that, here is Jets Wire’ position-by-position report card grades for Week 1:

Aaron Rodgers finished only 13-for-21 passing with a touchdown and an interception. The giveaway was a tipped ball so we can’t put all that on him. However, his debut 2.0 did not live up to the hype. Turning the free play into a score was the QB’s best moment.

Breece Hall did have a touchdown to cap a positive first drive. After that, he did not get involved enough at all. The offensive line let him down in a big way. Hall did grab five catches in the passing game.

The entire Jets’ tight end group felt invisible. According to Pro Football Focus metrics, Jeremy Ruckert was the top-marked player in this unit at a 60.9 overall grade solely for blocking.

It was a two-sided coin for the Jets offensive line. Rodgers had time to complete some passes but the group was so woeful running that ball that the imbalanced game plan made it difficult on the passing attack. PFF’s top marks in the trenches were handed to Alijah Vera-Tucker (67.5) and John Simpson (66.3).

It was an abysmal effort from the Jets’ defensive front. Two sacks of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy came via the secondary. Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams only had one quarterback hit while pass rusher Micheal Clemons had a third sack.

Most notably was the poor tackling and failure to close any gaps or set an edge in the ground game as 49ers’ back Jordan Mason ripped off 147 yards on the ground. Unfortunately, Haason Reddick was not acquired to fix the run defense either.

The linebacker round out the front seven and they had their miscues against the run as well. At least their efforts in the passing attack were positive. All-Pro tight end George Kittle has had much better days, he had four catches for 40 yards.

The secondary held up their end of the bargain against the pass for most of the evening despite a poor pass rush helping them. No touchdowns in the air for Purdy, and the defensive backfield did their part in attacking the QB since Tony Adams and Sauce Garder had sacks.

The lack of tackling very much was found in the secondary, bringing this grade down.

Not much out of the kickoff return department. Thomas Morstead had a booming 60-yard punt, at least.

Breece Hall might not be the best HB on the Jets’ depth chart

Breece Hall had just 54 yards rushing vs. the 49ers and OC Nathaniel Hackett should consider playing other HB’s on the Jets’ depth chart.

New York Jets running back Breece Hall finished week 1 with a dismal 3.4 yards per carry average versus the San Francisco 49ers. Perhaps offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett should consider delegating reps to other backs on the team depth chart.

With the inability to establish the run, the Jets’ offense became one dimensional and were bullied by the 49ers’ pass rush. Hackett will have to relinquish his ideals and understand that his rigid approach led to the exhaustion of the Jets’ defense that spent 38:40 minutes on the field.

Moreover, Jets’ running backs Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis are well able to take reps with the starters and should be deployed in and out of personnel packages throughout the game. Hall, who fumbled early in the first quarter and dropped a pass in the 2nd half has not gained enough merit to work as the sole proprietor of the teams’ rushing attack.

Through 16 total carries, Hall produced just 54 yards and that stat is mildly deceiving considering his sole 16-yard run.

Ultimately, Hall should remain the starter, but Allen just might be the more serviceable running back in short yardage and red-zone situations. Davis and Hall can thus function interchangeably as pass catcher out of the backfield in third down situations.

Jets’ Breece Hall, 49ers’ Brock Purdy exchange jerseys post game

#Jets’ Breece Hall, #49ers’ Brock Purdy exchange jerseys post game:

New York Jets running back Breece Hall and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy go way back. It makes sense why they would exchange jerseys following their head-to-head in Week 1.

The 49ers pulled out the 32-19 win over the Jets. While Hall was not on the winning side, he has been on Purdy’s sideline plenty. The two were teammates in college at Iowa State.

Both were selected by their respective teams at the 2022 NFL draft–Hall in the second round and Purdy the last overall pick in the entire event.

Purdy’s earned his stripes in the NFL well beyond that, but regardless, his former teammates needed to switch jerseys after the final whistle no matter where their careers have taken them.

Their exchange can be found in the clip below:

WATCH: Breece Hall score Jets’ first TD of 2024 vs. 49ers

Breece scores:

The New York Jets took a 7-3 lead in the first half against the San Francisco 49ers in their 2024 NFL season opener thanks to Breece Hall.

Hall displayed solid vison on the play near the goal line, but the Jets’ offensive line deserves their credit too.

Nearly untouched, Hall took one cut to the right and scored easily. It capped a 12-play, 70 yard drive.

Check out the score below:
