Eagles director of scouting Brandon Hunt to interview for Patriots GM role

The Eagles could be set to lose another key member of the front office personnel, as Adam Schefter reports that Brandon Hunt will interview for the Patriots lead personnel job (GM).

The Eagles could be set to lose another key front office personnel member, as Adam Schefter reports that Brandon Hunt will interview for the Patriots’ lead personnel job (GM).

Hunt was a homegrown talent for the Steelers and a Pittsburgh native who attended IUP and had been learning on the job under Kevin Colbert for almost 15 years.

Hunt officially joined Pittsburgh’s scouting department in 2010 and was named the pro scouting coordinator for Houston after Doug Whaley was hired as the general manager of the Buffalo Bills.

The move to Philadelphia was essentially a trade of front-office personnel, with Andy Weidl joining the Steelers as Omar Khan’s assistant GM.

For New England, the interview process is a chance to balance the front office with proper titles after former head coach Bill Belichick did not have a traditionally titled general manager in his 24 seasons.

Krafts (ownership) hasn’t employed one since owning the team, and current senior personnel Eliot Wolf is the favorite to land the job.

Chad Kelly suspended 9 games by CFL for violating gender-based violence policy

Chad Kelly suspended 9 games by CFL for violating gender-based violence policy:

Nephew of Buffalo Bills and Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, Chad Kelly, has been suspended by the CFL for at least nine regular-season games.

The news comes following the CFL’s investigation into a lawsuit filed by a former strength and conditioning coach against both the player and club for violating its gender-based violence policy.

The decision comes after the league commissioned an independent third-party investigation into allegations made against Kelly by a female former Argos assistant strength coach who is suing him for sexual harassment and the team for wrongful dismissal.

Kelly, 30, was named the CFL’s outstanding player last season after leading Toronto to a league-best and franchise record 16-2 record. The Argos’ season ended with a 38-17 home loss to eventual Grey Cup-champion Montreal in the East Division final.

Kelly will be required to undergo confidential assessments by an independent expert and attend mandatory counselling sessions conducted by a gender-based violence expert.

“Players are the ambassadors of our great game,” CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie stated in a news release. “They are expected to be leaders in the locker room and role models in the community. It was important that we performed our due diligence to properly review this matter from all points of view. That in-depth investigation found that Mr. Kelly unequivocally violated the CFL’s Gender-based Violence Policy.

“Mr. Kelly’s suspension is the direct result of his behavior. The addition of mandatory counselling focuses on his need for self-reflection and understanding of his actions. He must take full advantage of this opportunity for personal betterment in order to return to the CFL.”

There is no report on whether or not the Argonauts are facing any repercussions.

Lions to bring back safety CJ Moore after his gambling suspension

Moore was recently reinstated from his year-long ban and returns to the Lions

The Detroit Lions are expected to bring back veteran safety CJ Moore, per Ian Rapoport and other reports. It’s not official yet, but the indications are that Moore will sign a one-year deal to come back to Detroit.

Moore, now 28, played 5 games for the Lions from 2019 through 2022 after joining Detroit as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Ole Miss. He missed the entire 2023 season after being suspended for a full year by the NFL for violations of the league’s gambling policy.

The league reinstated Moore and three other former Lions players who were all released by Detroit after the year-long suspensions for the gambling violations. It’s the same situation that cost wide receiver Jameson Williams four games in 2023 after an initial six-game suspension.

While Moore didn’t play a lot on defense — only 344 snaps in four seasons — he was a fixture on special teams units for Detroit across two different coaching regimes. Given the current depth chart at safety, Moore could be counted on to play more defense in 2024 even though special teams figures to still be his forte. Detroit has starters Kerby Joseph and Ifeatu Melifonwu at safety and no other player who has ever taken a snap in the NFL at the position backing them up.

UCLA ranks last in 247 Sports BIG 10 recruiting list

The Bruins are last in these rankings.

UCLA has enjoyed a lot of excitement and buzz since hiring new head coach, DeShaun Foster. But one ranking may bring the Bruins back down to Earth.

In a recent 247 Sports composite ranking, the Bruins rank as the worst recruiting school in the BIG 10. With only ten recruits, two four-star, and eight three-star, the Bruins lag behind all other teams in the BIG 10.

Though the recruiting process is still far from over, the Bruins significantly fall behind other powerhouse schools. With Oregon rated at the top, the Bruins are looking up at them as well as fellow former Pac-12 teams, USC and Washington.

The problem is fixable for the Bruins but is an indication that there is plenty of work to be done. Following a mass exodus of players to the NFL on the defensive side of the ball this off-season, there are several holes and positions of need.

But if the Bruins can harness their new-found momentum and steal some recruits from fellow BIG 10 teams, they could find themselves back in the mix and closer to a conference title.

UCLA Bruins offer 3-star tight end Dylan Sims

Bruins offer a 3-star tight end.

Recruiting continues for the Bruins during the off-season. With the team hard at work installing the offense under Eric Bieniemy as spring practice continues, UCLA offered a future skill position player this weekend.

Dylan Sims, a 6′ 6″ tight end from Queen Creek High School in Queen Creek, Arizona, received an offer from DeShaun Foster after meeting with him.

Sims, whose size already puts him in a good position to play at the next level, is a three-star recruit for the class of 2025. With his senior year still to play, the Bruins extended him an offer early.

With the Bruins offering several opportunities to tight ends both in high school and the transfer portal, it is clear that UCLA is looking to add to the position.

With the Kansas City Chiefs, where Bieniemy was an offensive coordinator, he utilized tight ends heavily in the passing game. If that trend continues and Bieniemy wants to incorporate tight ends into the Bruins offense, having several offers for tight ends on the table bodes well for their scheme in the future.

Michigan State football DE transfer Bai Jobe chooses Kansas

Former MSU DE Bai Jobe picks Kansas over Mississippi State and UTSA

Michigan State lost defensive end Bai Jobe to the transfer portal during the spring portal window, much to the dismay of the fanbase. Jobe was a former top-75, 4-star recruit out of Oklahoma in the 2023 recruiting class. Once a crown jewel, now off to the transfer portal.

Jobe has now found his landing spot, making a decision between Kansas, Mississippi State and UTSA. He chose the Jayhawks.

Jobe did not record any playing time during his time at MSU.

Colts DC reveals big plans for Laiatu Latu

Gus Bradley is excited about the UCLA star.

Gus Bradley, defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts was asked about their first-round pick Laiatu Latu, and he was excited about the former UCLA Bruins defensive star.

Bradley was excited about the possibilities that Latu brings to the table on the defensive side. He was impressed with the various skills Latu possesses, per Joel A. Erickson of USA Today:

“When you have guys who have specific traits and different skill sets where you go, ‘Hold on now, I think we’ve got a chance for a mismatch. Let’s see what that can develop to be,” Bradley said. “When you have an athlete like that, I think those packages might expand based on what we see, day in and day out, to use the skill set.”

The Colts hope to use the former Bruins defensive star to improve their defense. They will need that defense in the AFC South as they will pair up against CJ Stroud and the Houston offense twice, along with Trevor Lawrence and Jacksonville. Bradley, who is in his third season as defensive coordinator mentioned this about Latu’s athleticism:

“One of the things that jumped out to us was his athleticism,” Bradley said. “You saw him drop, you could see him flip his hips — not that we’re going to do that a lot with him — but you could see his overall athleticism. He can rush from a two-point (stance), he can rush from a three-point. He’s used as a spinner. You can put him over the guard.”

Latu will be active in the mini-camps this summer, and then training camp will get underway in late July. The Colts train at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield Indiana, and many of their practices will be open to the public.

Former Bruins ace Gerrit Cole returns to pitching activities

Gerrit Cole is inching closer to a return.

One of the best Bruins pitchers of all time has returned to action. Gerrit Cole, the New York Yankees Cy Young Award winner in 2023, has begun throwing off the mound in practice.

Cole, who was placed on the 60-day injured list after suffering elbow pain and inflammation over spring training, returned to throwing this week.

A big step towards his return, ESPN’s Jorge Castillo reported that Cole threw 15 pitches, all fastballs, in his first outing after taking time off.

According to Castillo, Cole said of his return to throwing, “It was exciting. This was a good day for me. I was fired up.”

The Yankees currently hold a 22-13 record and sit in second place in the American League East. To boot, their 3.01 team ERA is third in all of Major League Baseball today, an impressive feat without their ace.

If Cole can return before the All-Star Break in July, he can help the Yankees continue to lower their ERA and potentially surpass the top-ranked Baltimore Orioles in the AL East standings.
